Back to School

T

hat time of year has come again where mornings begin early, everyone in the house is in a rush to get out the door, and the school bus only waits a few minutes for your kids to arrive before taking off without them. Yes, summer is over and school is starting, but the new school year brings opportunities for students of all ages to reach new goals and shine bright in their community.

The Chandler community has rallied together again to make a difference in the lives of others by providing 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to underserved elementary, middle and high school students. Read about the organizations that helped make this happen, and how you can get involved, in our feature story this month.

There’s nothing like history and architecture coming alive on a field trip, and at Taliesin West you’ll be treated to several types of tours of this desert treasure Frank Lloyd Wright himself established here in our hometown. It’s a great place for both children and adults of all ages.

THE SUMMER NATIONALS TOUR In 1994, California punk bands came together to perform for a massive legion of fans at Summer Nationals, which sold out three days at the Hollywood Palladium. Twenty years later and the bands are meeting up once again to perform for fans old and new. The Offspring, Bad Religion, Pennywise, and Stiff Little Finger will all be a part of the tour. The Offspring broke into the mainstream with their album, SMASH, which contained hits, “Come Out and Play” and “Self Esteem.” The album was hugely popular and went on to sell 12 million copies. The Offspring will play the album in its entirety. The Summer Nationals Tour takes place at the Mesa Amphitheater on August 29.

W

hen restaurant space became available at Downtown Ocotillo in 2012, Tom Kaufman, CHoP operating partner, and several local investors, jumped at the opportunity to open a steakhouse. From salads and burgers to seasonal fish and hand-cut meats; specialty cocktails, wine and beer selections; and a kids’ menu, CHoP appeals to diners of all ages.

CHoP will celebrate their two year anniversary in December.

A unique concept While there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Chandler, Kaufman and his partners felt there weren’t many dining options in the Ocotillo area.

“We knew there was no place nearby, besides going to the mall area, to get a mesquite-grilled steak, ribs, or pork chop,” said Kaufman. “We knew that if we were frustrated that others would be too and thought we could successfully pull it off.”

The group planed the restaurant to be a casual neighborhood dining spot.

“Our goal was to offer good food and great service,” Kaufman said.

A private dining area equipped with a larger projector screen and a state-of-the-art audio/video system, is also available for corporate events, business meetings, birthdays and special occasions with pre-set menu options can accommodate up to 44 guests.

Mesquite hardwood grill Appropriately named, CHoP is best known for its pork chop, which comes house-cured and cooked over a mesquite hardwood grill, served with coleslaw and apple chutney.

Also popular are the barbeque baby back ribs, the hand-cut rib eye and the roasted prime rib.

For the non-carnivores, menu options include a hearty and delicious house-made veggie burger or the featured fish of the day.

Fresh seasonal vegetables, side dishes On the lighter side, there are a variety of fresh salads including the downtown salad featuring field greens, sweet corn, bacon, egg and tomato. A traditional Caesar and wedge salad are also available.

All entrees are accompanied with a side such as seasonal vegetables, fries or coleslaw, but additional side dishes can be ordered for only $5 and include a loaded baked potato, sweet potato fries, sautéed mushrooms, and macaroni and cheese, among other selections.

Wine and spirits Wines are offered by the glass and range from $7 to $12. Specialty cocktails include the “Ocotillo Sunset,” consisting of peach vodka, orange, lime and pomegranate.

Future plans Diners can expect some new additions in the coming months.

“I want to diversify the menu and add items such as raw oysters, crab cakes and pasta,” Kaufman said. “I also want to expand the appetizer menu to give guests more options.”

Kaufman and his team are also concentrating on improving service standards and implementing new training programs.

“I want people to know that they don’t have to wait for a special occasion to dine at CHoP,” he said. “For $20, you can enjoy a burger and a glass of wine and have a great experience.”

Back to School Clothing Drive New Clothes Mean New Beginnings for Students Article Michelle Guerrero | Photography Provided

W

hen I was a kid, my mom would take me back-to-school clothes shopping every August. There was always something special about getting new shoes and clothes before the school year began. It wasn’t just a pair of jeans or a t-shirt she was buying me, it was a fresh start in the form of denim and cotton.

Kids are ever changing, and it felt like an opportunity to transform for the new school year.

I was a fortunate kid. Not all kids are so lucky to be given a shopping spree before school starts. Not every kid walks to school wearing new shoes on their feet, and a bag filled with school supplies on their back. However, there is a nonprofit organization called Back to School Clothing Drive (BTSCD) that strives to give every kid that fresh start for the school year.

Each year the program helps more than 25,000 K-6 grade elementary school children who attend Title 1 public elementary schools. Their reach is far, impacting children in 250 schools, across 40 school districts, throughout the Valley and Northern Arizona.

During their summer “New Clothes, New Beginnings” annual distribution event, more than 10,000 children receive nearly $2 million in new school clothing, supplies, backpacks and dental hygiene 14 Chandler Lifestyle | August 2014

items. Each child receives about $300 of clothing and supplies.

“Once a child came to the event we held and we were giving out dental hygiene bags. He opened it and said he finally had his very own toothbrush and wouldn’t have to share one with his brother anymore,” says Karl Gentles, executive director of BTSCD. Children who benefit from the “New Clothes, New Beginnings” event are the highest-need children from each school and are pre-registered and selected by their school’s parent coordinator, social worker or school nurse. Parents can also request support directly through the school. BTSCD does not directly serve the public.

One aspect that makes this program unique is that the children are all given new clothing and shoes that have been purchased, meaning nothing is second-hand. During the week-long event, the children are matched with a personal shopper that helps them pick their clothes, shoes and supplies.

“People can support us a couple of ways,” says Gentles. “The most direct way is by making a financial contribution through our website. Also, organizations can hold a drive for us. We gear up for next year’s activity right away.”

This is a program truly embraced by the community. Although

they purchase the clothing through fundraising, many companies hold school supply drives, businesses such as Intel, located in Chandler. Bank of America does a Valley-wide drive in all of their banking centers. The National Charity League Scottsdale Chapter, Boys Team Charity Scottsdale and Notre Dame Preparatory School are huge supporters as well.

Financial donations made to the program are eligible for the AZ Charitable Tax Credit. The program is also supported by the BHHS Legacy Foundation. They match dollar for dollar when donations for the program filter through them.

BTSCD has two other programs in addition to “New Clothes, New Beginnings.” One is Stitches-of-Love and the other is The Stardust Student Attire for Education Matching Grant and Online Retail Store Program (SAFE). Stitches-of-Love consists of a strong team of 400 seamstresses who create a handmade item for each child. The roots of this program dates back 47 years. The SAFE program, created by Jerry Bisgrove and managed by BTSCD for the past 10 plus years, promotes and encourages the implementation of school uniforms to help increase school success.

The program has a rich history that began in 1967 when the Salt River flooded, washing out many of the migrant camps located along the riverbank. A group of women banded together to raise money to supply back-to-school clothes for the children of the migrant families. That first year they provided 871 children with clothing. This year, they are providing about 25,000 children with clothing.

Gentles recalled another child who attended one of their events. He came with clothing in a bag that he received the year before. Since he outgrew them, he thought another child could benefit from them. Not only are these youngsters benefiting from the program, they are clearly learning about the power of giving.

A $25 donation purchases two backpacks. Five new pairs of pants cost $50. Twenty new pairs of sneakers cost $250. The sense of pride the children have when wearing their new clothes and sneakers on the first day of school: priceless.

T

he architecture and influence of Frank Lloyd Wright can be seen across the valley. And with the impending 50th anniversary of one of his most celebrated local works – ASU’s Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium – there is no time like the present to brush up on how Scottsdale became his home away from home.

In 1927, Wright was invited by a former student out to Arizona to assist him on what would become the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. He accepted, and though his original plans were viewed as a bit too unique and extreme, and after alterations and compromise, the resulting property went on to win numerous awards and resides today as “the only existing hotel in the world with a Frank Lloyd Wright-inf luenced design.”

Wright returned to Taliesin, his home in Spring Green, Wisconsin.

By 1932 he had directed his attention to the establishment of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and the Taliesin Fellowship, through 16 Chandler Lifestyle | August 2014

which he sought to provide a total learning environment geared toward creating a generation of responsible, creative and cultured human beings through hands-on experience of architecture, construction, farming, cooking, nature and the arts.

The harsh Wisconsin winters were not conducive to the yearround interactions with nature that Wright sought in his programs, and after returning numerous times to southern Arizona, he found a location on which he could build a desert masterpiece. In his autobiography, Wright describes his find.

Finally I learned of a site 26 miles from Phoenix, across the desert of the vast Paradise Valley. On up to a great mesa in the mountains. On the mesa just below Mcdowell Peak we stopped, turned and looked around.

The design of Taliesin West was a collaboration of Wright with his students. Construction of the complex began in 1937, when Wright celebrated his 70th birthday, and he continued to tinker with it until his death in 1959. In that time Wright designed many structures from his desert studio, including New York’s Guggenheim Museum and the aforementioned Gammage Auditorium, which was initially designed to be an opera house in Baghdad, Iraq, but was instead built for ASU after political unrest cancelled the initial project.

Wright continually sought his greatest inspiration in nature (a word he insisted on spelling with a capital “N”), which is evident in the entirety of Taliesin West. Local rocks are embedded in the masonry walls of the buildings to help blend with the landscape, and canvas roofs attached to wooden beams helped to ease the intensity of the desert sun while still allowing for an abundance of natural light. Even the buildings were arranged and connected by various walkways, terraces, water-features and gardens which aided to feeling Taliesin West was destined to be part of surrounding landscape.

Today, Taliesin West sits on more than 600 acres, and is home to both the main campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture as well as the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Chandler kids go back to school with supplies they need Organizations teamed up to collect donations, backpacks for underserved families.

or most kids, going back to school means getting to pick out a brand new backpack, pencil case, colorful folders and notebooks. But for some Chandler families, preparing for the new school year causes a financial burden and children are sent to school without the supplies they need.

Earlier this summer, ICAN, a family-centered youth service organization in Chandler, and Fulton Homes’ ‘Stuff The Bus’ campaign partnered with Operation Back to School Chandler to provide 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, shoes, socks, underwear and uniforms to underserved elementary, middle and high school students in Chandler.

“We started championing groups to collaborate and knew we could do a better job reaching out and meeting the needs of these underserved families.”

Chandler Unified School District is comprised of approximately 40,000 children. The area faced with the most socioeconomic challenges fall within the 85225 zip code.

“We’re working together to broaden the scope,” Hartke says.

“We’re able to target those families who have the greatest need.”

The objective of For Our City-Chandler is to provide the organizational framework for community organizations, employers, business groups, and faith-based communities to collectively work together toward helping others.

Working together for disadvantaged youth

It didn’t take long for Chandler business and non-profit leaders to realize they could make a bigger impact if they worked together.

“Four years ago we discovered that there were many organizations doing drives to collect backpacks,” says Kevin Hartke, Chandler City Councilman, and director of For Our City- Chandler.

“Families no longer have to go to different places for backpacks, shoes or uniforms,” Hartke says. “We’re able to supply all of it in one location to reach more of the underserved.”

“We’re strong believers that kids can learn with simple supplies that they need,” Hartke says.

Fulton Homes’ Stuff the Bus

‘Stuff the Bus’ was held June 6 to July 14, and volunteers from For Our City-Chandler and organization partners accepted donations of school supplies outside a full-size school bus parked inside Chandler Fashion Center.

Supplies collected were distributed to ICAN, an organization that provides positive programs for youth in Chandler, by equipping youth to achieve personal and academic success by tackling substance abuse, gang involvement and juvenile delinquency.

The school bus parked inside the mall featured painted handprints representing each child in need, and contained list of items each child requires for a successful school year. Those who wanted to support the effort chose a handprint, shopped for the requested items and returned the supplies back to volunteers at the school bus, Barnes and Noble, mall Guest Services or any 99.9 KEZ events. Donations to a specific child were accepted, as well as general contributions.

Those who were unable to shop for supplies but still wanted to help were able to make cash donations online.

“Children need to get a good start in the first few days of each school year,” Fulton Homes CEO Doug Fulton says. “When you donate to ‘Stuff the Bus’ you make a positive difference in these children’s lives.”

Several other Chandler organizations accepted donations including Chandler Sunset Library, Chandler-Gilbert Family YMCA, and Chandler Snedigar Recreation Center.

Operation Back to School Chandler

This year was the second annual Operation Back to School Chandler, a one day event, held on Saturday, July 19 at Chandler High School.

Hundreds of volunteers including individuals and teams from large and small area businesses sorted and staffed the all-day event.

“Donations come in the form of in-kind, monetary and volunteerism,” Hartke says.

Donors from the Chandler Compadres and Chandler Christian Community Center were among the organizations that supported the event.

“Families no longer have to go to different places for backpacks, shoes or uniforms,” Hartke says. “We’re able to supply all of it in one location to reach more of the underserved.”

It was estimated that a $25 monetary donation was enough to give one Chandler student a backpack filled with all the

back-to-school essentials including notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue sticks, erasers, construction paper, index cards and a ruler.

Supplies were based on grade levels.

Make a Difference

On Aug. 28, a meeting will be held at 8 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club in Chandler to announce the results of these efforts.

The Wolfe’s began to explore the countless arts festivals around Arizona, making contact with local artists and explaining their retail concept. Interest soared and by December 2010 Sibley’s West opened its doors.

“The response was great,” John says. “Michelle does the buying, and she has a natural talent for spotting quality. She thinks like the customer.”

“We do not order on consignment,” Michelle explains. “One of my biggest challenges is keeping up with the ordering from more than 200 suppliers. When a line becomes popular, we can be re-ordering from an artist or business nearly every week just to keep up with the demand until we begin to understand how their product will sell. It’s challenging, but because

I’m dealing with the creator of the product, they are excited to know that people are buying their items.”

The Wolfe’s mantra, “From Arizona”, not only provides the visitors and residents of Chandler with a unique retail destination. It’s also a broader platform for the Wolfe’s suppliers to share their talents.

“We’re a showcase for the arts community,” John says. “We’re a place for local artists and craftsmen to get some notoriety and recognition.”

“When I look around the store I do not see products, I see artists,” Michelle explains. “I know the names and faces of every supplier in the store. We spend a lot of time with our staff making sure they’re familiar with the artists and businesses and the stories behind the products.”

The store’s website, SibleysWest.com, offers video links to artist profiles that provide rare insight and personal narratives from the suppliers themselves.

“Our guests really appreciate knowing about where the products come from,” Michelle says. “In today’s world we seem to become disconnected from much personal contact. We try to greet and talk with every guest who comes in our store and let them know about the unique products that we carry.”

In one of the more than 50 profiles available on the website, Mesa artist Danny Kunzelman explains how he creates tumbleweed pens.

Kunzelman’s enthusiasm for his craft is evident, and his friendly and casual demeanor makes him instantly likeable. Other profiles highlight area potters, authors, singers, photographers, glass artists, leather smiths and wineries to name a few. It’s this sort of personal touch that puts Sibley’s West a cut above other gift stores.

“It touches a chord with people,” John says.

Aside from the wide array of beautiful pottery, glass and metal art, Sibley’s West also offers food, apparel, books, pet supplies, stationary, kitchen items, children’s gifts and gifts that pamper.

“We also offer (gift) basket assembly, shipping and free gift wrap,” Michelle adds.

ou’ve heard the theoretical question asked before: “If your house was on fire and you could only save one thing, what would it be?” Most of us would answer, “Our photo albums.” (or I suppose in this day and age, it would be “The laptop with the photos.”)

So why is it some parents place such little value on investing in professional family photos?

With the availability and affordability of DSLR cameras, it’s easy to think that anyone can pick up a camera and take amazing pictures. But there’s way more to it than that.

Emily Bridgman, a professional photographer who specializes in lifestyle portrait photography, explains that the money you spend on a professional pays for the countless hours they spend mastering their camera, posing techniques, learning how to work with varieties of lighting, and how to bring out the best in their clients and make them look amazing under any circumstances. She warns people to not assume that their neighbor who just bought a nice camera can get the same results as a pro.

“There is more to being a professional in any industry than simply owning the right tools,” Bridgman explains. “Owning an oven doesn’t make you an award-winning chef, and owning a wrench doesn’t make you a skilled mechanic.”

“When it comes down to it, people want their families real moments documented, and that is an art,” agrees East Valley photographer Lindsi Luffman. “You would not want to hire the cheapest 24 Chandler Lifestyle | August 2014

tattoo artist to do a piece for you, so why would you hire a cheapest photographer (artist)?”

So how do parents find the perfect photographer to capture those precious moments? Jasmyn Anderson, another East Valley professional photographer, suggests doing a lot of research.

“A seasoned photographer will have consistent looking images regardless of where the pictures were taken and who is in them,” she suggests. Bridgman agrees, noting that the images in the photographer’s gallery should match your preference in lighting and type of image captured, as well as represent that every session they shoot is as unique as the family that’s in it.

And once you’ve found the perfect photographer to capture your family’s love and laughter, what can you do to make sure your children are ready for their close-up? Luffman suggests making sure your kids are well-fed, well-rested, and ready to have fun, while Anderson suggests being ready to just “go with the flow.”

“I often tell my parents that I will do the work and they can sit back and relax,” she says, “and I will be sure to capture those special candid moments.”

ost grocery articles talk about saving strategies in the grocery store. But those savings can be wasted if you don’t take care of your groceries once you get them home. And the waste can be significant. The average American household throws away $2,000 in food every year. About two-thirds of household waste is due to food spoilage. The other one-third occurs after the food is prepared.

The following practical tips will help you avoid waste and make the most of your groceries at home.

Get organized. Food waste occurs when it is not used. By organiz-

ing your pantry and refrigerator, you will see what you have and can utilize those ingredients. Arrange earlier expiring items in front of those with longer expiration dates; use those expiring first. Similarly, with items that spoil quickly, such as produce, put them front and center where you can see them. This will remind you to use them before they spoil.

Store food properly. Lack of proper storage can accelerate

food spoilage. For example, sandwich bread is best stored in your pantry, rather than your refrigerator, because cool air dries it out. To find out how to properly store your perishable items check out FoodSafety.gov.

Utilize your freezer. You can cut waste and over-preparing by dividing your food into manageable portions. For instance, if you purchase 10 pounds of meat, portion out what your family will use per meal and freeze until you are ready to use. If you have left-overs, freezing them is also a great money-saver. Just be sure to label your freezer items properly by identifying the contents and date it. Then put them in a conspicuous location so they are not forgotten.

Use recipe websites. The 99 cent eggplant seemed like a good idea

at the time, but now you aren’t sure what to do with it. Don’t let it become a produce casualty. There are many websites, such as AllRecipes.com, that provide quick, tasty recipe options. Simply enter the ingredients that you have in the search engine and it will provide you a variety of recipes.

Don’t throw it out (yet). Except on certain baby food, “use by”

or “best before” dates are created by the manufacturer to indicate peak freshness. They are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and there is no law precluding the sale of food that is past the expiration date. Therefore, many of those items you have been tossing are still acceptable to eat. StillTasty.com is a great resource to determine when to eat and when to toss.

Donate it. If you can’t use it, donate it. Food pantries and shelters

are happy to accept non-perishable items and some, such as Shawnee Community Services, will accept items past the freshness dates as long as they are unopened.

Saving on your grocery budget does not end when you leave the grocery store. The next time you bring home groceries, have a plan for storing and preparing your food, and use available resources to help you get the most out of your purchased items. These small changes can have a big impact on your bottom line.

5 Back to School Nutrition Tips Healthy Ideas for Hectic Households

W

hether your kid is starting kindergarten or you’re back in the office, these five simple tips can help you and your family eat nutritious and delicious foods throughout the school year.

Although it might be easier to let the kiddos eat at school, cafeteria meals are often loaded with refined carbohydrates and lack vital nutrients that homemade whole food snacks and meals can provide. Not only do the kids benefit from foods packed from home, but having a brown bag yourself can help you resist the temptation for soda, choco-lattes, donuts, pizza, candy and other office junk food.

The good news is, with a little planning and some preparation, you can learn to juggle a hectic schedule without compromising your family’s health or packing on the pounds.

1. Choose Whole Foods

No matter how you spend your day, strive for natural whole foods over man-made, processed products. Whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, meats, poultry and fish are high in nutrients that support your health. In contrast, processed products, such as crackers, chips, cookies, snack bars, pretzels, and 100-calorie packs spike insulin levels and provide few nutrients. In general, the less refined a food is the more nutrients it contains.

2. Ask For Help

Let your spouse and kids help you create a grocery list, read food labels, plan a menu, find recipes, pack lunches and snacks, prepare a salad, wash vegetables, or do the dishes. With some family teamwork, it will be much easier for everyone to have fun eating healthy together.

3. Eat a Protein-Rich Breakfast

Although these might sound like “healthy” choices, processed breakfast foods such as cereal and lowfat milk, a bagel and low-fat cream cheese, or a muffin and juice are low in nutrients and can make you sluggish and sleepy. hildren dread the end of summer because it means the end of their beloved vacation, but we adults often find ourselves anxiously awaiting the fall. Not only do parents get a reprieve from worrying how to keep the kids occupied (and away from daylong video game benders), but they – and the rest of us – get to look forward to the end of summer’s triple digits and the beginning of a whole new set of reasons to love living in Arizona.

Sure, the temperatures don’t become “hang out outside” bearable until September or October, but while those temperatures start to drop, the number of fun activities to do starts to rise. There’s hiking, biking or jogging through any of our numerous local parks or mountain trails. Get a move on in the great outdoors while giving back by participating in a local 5k charity run/walk (find one you like at GetSetAZ.com). If you prefer a little music or other theatre entertainment instead, the Chandler Center for the Arts starts their 2014-2015 season with shows like Larry the Cable Guy or nearby Tempe Center for the Arts favorite Ballet Under the Stars featuring Ballet Arizona.
