Sarah Krueger | sarah.krueger@citylifestyle.com

Style has always been the lens through which I see the world. Long before launching Chula Vista City Lifestyle, my journey began deep in the fashion industry. After earning my degree in fashion marketing and management, I spent the early part of my career building a dual life in the field—simultaneously working on the industry side while stepping into the classroom part-time to educate and inspire the next generation of fashion professionals. When the world shifted during the pandemic, my path did too, leading me into the corporate tech space to work for a retail giant that shares its name with a famous tropical rainforest. But ultimately, stepping into editorial marketing brought me right back to what I love most: connecting with people, supporting local businesses, and giving our community a beautiful platform to share its stories. To me, style isn’t just about the clothes we wear; it’s about how we express who we are and the spaces we curate. It is how we style the places we call home. Here in Chula Vista, our style footprint is truly unmatched. We are a beautiful mosaic of laid-back SoCal vibes, distinct streetwear, and a deep-rooted love for heritage apparel and accessories crafted by our own talented local artisans. That same creative expression naturally flows right through our front doors. This month, we explore how true style seamlessly translates from the wardrobe into our living spaces, highlighting the art, balance, and intentional design that make a house truly feel like home. As you flip through our September Style Edition, I hope you feel inspired to celebrate your own unique style, both in what you wear and how you live, while supporting the amazing local creators who make Chula Vista so vibrant.

BEYOND THE CANVAS Rebecca Robb is a lifelong oil painter, mother, traveler, nature lover, and home curator. When it comes to bringing tranquility, peace, and a gentle but captivating energy into the style of your home, her art and curation services may be exactly what you’re looking for. We had the chance to sit down with Rebecca to talk about her art, painting, style, and passions. Here’s what she had to say. Q: CAN YOU TELL US THE STORY OF HOW YOU GOT STARTED PAINTING? A: When I was young I would sketch and draw all of the time. I lived abroad with my parents and there was a person in our community who saw my talent and asked me, “Do you paint?” I had never painted before, but I answered them with confidence: “Yes.” They continued, “If I buy you supplies, will you paint something for me?” I remember coming home one day after that to a wooden box on my bed filled with a starter set of oil paints, and completely lighting up from the inside. That was my first time painting, and I never stopped. I was obsessed. I’ve tried other mediums, but oil is the only

one that’s ever felt right. I fell so deeply in love with the texture, the medium, the smell, the process, where my mind goes when I’m painting, the emotions—it’s an experience for me that feels aligned with more than just my interests. It’s my soul. It’s my heart. It’s my dreams. Five years ago, something clicked: I realized I am always going to be painting and I am always going to be an artist. That’s when I really began to give painting professionally my all. Q: WHO ARE YOUR PAINTINGS FOR? WHAT DO YOU ENVISION WHEN YOU ARE CREATING SOMETHING NEW? A: There is a lot of nostalgia for me when I am painting nature scapes, because I grew up around so much nature. The color and texture come from that inspiration, but when I paint I also think about the homes where I visualize my art hanging. I love interior design, aesthetics, and the thought of someone bringing my soul to their walls. When people find me at art shows or online, there is this little energy, this excitement—like I found my people and my people found me. My clients are people who understand the power and impact of having a beautiful space and the energetic frequency that flows into their productivity and creativity through art. I like to think about the ways I can communicate a frequency of tranquility, peace, and magnetic energy that will help someone wake up in their home to be the best and most creative version of themselves every day. Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR STYLE AS AN ARTIST? A: I believe that art changes as we grow and learn. My art today is different from my art two years ago and that’s one of the many joys of being an artist—the growth and evolution as I learn more and as I understand more about what I love. That said, the way I have come to articulate my style of work is contemporary impressionism. CONTINUED >

I envision my art in contemporary interior spaces, so I aim to depict my art in fresh, modern, minimal ways. My main focus is on color palettes. The response I often receive from people who see my work is that it radiates peace and tranquility. That’s the power of color, and why my color palette is so important to me. I use texture to create excitement and energy, while the color exudes harmony. Q: HOW DOES SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED GET YOUR ART INTO THEIR HOME? A: People find me in all kinds of ways—art shows, online, or through word of mouth. Anyone who loves one of my pieces can purchase it from me. I also work one-on-one with clients to create custom pieces for their home. For example, if something they loved wasn’t the right size or composition, we work together to create something perfect, infused with my passion but with the custom elements they’re looking for.

“When my clients get to see what I envisioned for them for the first time, when they get to feel the energy and magnetism that the curated art brings to their space, I live for that moment.” Q: BEYOND COMMISSIONING ART, WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR REBECCA ROBB FINE ART? A: What I am most excited about right now is that I have begun offering fullhome curation services as the Founder and Creative Director of Artistic Atelier, my luxury full-home custom art curation experience. This is for people who really understand the true value of art when remodeling their home and want to create a fresh, updated look. My eye for aesthetics and design mean I can work with my clients to re-curate meaningful art that they already own while incorporating new custom art created by me, designing a connected and cohesive living environment. There’s magic that happens when the art and the furnishings and the space all come together. When my clients get to see what I envisioned for them for the first time, when they get to feel the energy and magnetism that the curated art brings to their space, I live for that moment. Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ART BUYERS LOOKING FOR A PIECE TO COMPLIMENT THEIR HOME? A: What I would say above all, is don’t wait. If you love a piece of art or want to commission one for your home, earlier is better. It’s sort of like when people try to get their finances in order before talking to a financial advisor, when they clean before the cleaner comes, or feel they need to get a little bit in shape before starting to go to the gym. With my art, you don’t need to wait until you feel your home is ready. I can help you get it there, and do it in a way that is aligned with you and your family and that infuses energy that will impact you every day moving forward. Incorporating art that you love into your life is truly an investment in your future, not an afterthought.

Animals, landscapes, and seascapes are Rebecca’s passion and the clear focus of her art, bringing together a childhood spent among nature and her deep interest in infusing meaningful intention into every piece. Her Artistic Atelier design experience offers a space where art, architecture, emotion, and intention come together to create a home that feels deeply personal and exquisitely its own. Whether you are looking for swaying branches of palm trees, captivating glares of wildcats, rustling fur of the safari, or the gentle ripples of the ocean, Rebecca’s art brings a sense of style that combines clarity and movement for an environment that is entirely inspiring and inviting. ARTICLE BY SARAH KRUEGER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY FORM + FLOW

When it comes to designing your home, a space that reflects your personality and your life is always in style. If you’re looking for your space to feel like the open, timeless, and luxurious homes you flip through in magazines, its designers like Romina Hilbert from FORM + FLOW Design that make it happen. Romina is a Chula Vista resident who spends her time designing spaces for homeowners throughout San Diego with her signature FORM + FLOW method. If you’re about to launch a home remodel or are designing a house of your own from the ground up, she’s the person you want to call. In Romina’s signature method, “FORM” reflects the more structural parts of the process. Things like measurements and proportions, what materials to use, acoustics, and building constraints. The “FLOW” represents the softer stuff, like designing how you will be using the space, how it feels emotionally, and how you hope to move through your home. In order to do this part well, Romina spends time in conversation with her clients, taking the time to really understand them. How do they live? What do they love? “I need to get to actually know [my clients] before making any design decisions, so I can make the whole process more manageable and less overwhelming for them. So I can make a space that really feels like them.” HOM E DESIG N F OR A ST Y LISH SPACE TO LOV E A N D LIV E IN

Romina’s approach is rooted in connection and authenticity, taking into account a holistic perspective on what it means to design a home. In person, Romina radiates the same authentic love, care, and a deep appreciation for the way a space impacts people’s everyday lives. Her creative yet detailed personality shines through in her work style, making sure every decision serves a purpose, every choice reflects her client’s individual style, and every design culminates in a space that works beautifully for their everyday lives.

VALUES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Romina’s FORM + FLOW method stems from a set of five values that are infused into every client conversation she has. The first is Refinement. “Refinement means it’s my job to pay attention to the details that I learn from my client. Those details really help elevate a space without making it feel over designed. My goal is for everything to feel natural.” Next, Connection. “When we’re talking about connection, it means designing spaces around the people who live there. Every decision should support how they gather, how they relax, how they work, how they live in general, and how people connect with each other.” Honesty - “It’s very important to me that my clients feel like they have someone they can rely on. I live in the design world every day, but of course, there’s people that don’t understand construction or how to get all of the pieces in the puzzle together. My goal is to help them understand that they can trust the process. I create a relationship of transparent communication and make sure I am not just following trends, but creating a space that reflects their true essence.” The fourth value is Fluidity. “Fluidity it’s all about adaptation. Life is always changing, and I believe homes should adapt to those changes. I believe in designing spaces that are flexible and effortless, that feel natural as well as unique. The space should serve the client and be a means for them to express themselves.” And finally, Creativity. “This one is my favorite. To me, creativity is about finding unique solutions that balance the beauty that we want to see daily with functionality and practicality. Being able to bring those two together, it’s really what makes us great.”

WHAT DOES A HOME DESIGNER DO?

From the materials chosen, to the color and stain options, to the dimensions of a space and communication with the building contractors—designers help craft the entire picture of a home, inch by inch. The process is less about designing a home that feels untouchable, and more about crafting a home that feels beautiful and stylish, yet fits and flows with your life. Some questions you may explore are things like, where do you spend the most time in your home? The kitchen? Den? Backyard? What do you want your home to feel like? If you aren’t quite sure yet, that’s where Romina works her magic. When working through a home design process, Romina brings clarity to your swirling or muddled ideas and then brings life to them with the practical steps needed to make it happen.

24

M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN

“I BELIEVE THAT IF I’VE DONE MY JOB well, MY CLIENT’S FINISHED SPACE WON’T JUST LOOK good, IT WILL MAKE THEIR DAILY LIFE easier, THEIR HOME MORE comfortable, AND THEIR LIFE MORE enjoyable.” Romina fell in love with interior design specifically because of this pairing of creativity and practicality. After growing up in three different countries, she never quite had the opportunity to make her space feel fully like her own until she was much older. Once she finally could, she fell in love with it. Now she finds her joy in designing beautiful spaces for others, too. For her, it’s the combination of meticulous details and deep creativity that feed her, “It’s the perfect mix of architecture and art,” she says. When we asked Romina where she gets her inspiration from, she gleamed: “I draw inspiration from traveling, I love to travel. I also draw inspiration from architecture, fashion, and especially from nature. I believe humans are meant to be outdoors — the birds, the trees — there is so much there. I am also

inspired by Architectural Digest magazine (AD), and of course, my son. Everything I do is for him.” The one thing Romina wants people to know when it comes to her work, is that it’s not worth waiting until you are overwhelmed to bring in a designer. Do it from the beginning or your home build or remodel. It will make your whole process more seamless and you will save money, time, and most importantly—stress. At the end of the day, Romina says that good design is not about creating a picture perfect home, though that is often one of her goals. “What it’s really about is your home supporting your everyday life and feeling both beautiful and functional.” “I believe that if I’ve done my job well, my client’s finished space won’t just look good, it will make their daily life easier, their home more comfortable, and their life more enjoyable.” S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . PARADISE, POURED Recipes with roots. Tropical traditions poured

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY BAG OF BEANS

with love from the Philippines.

Bag of Beans opened its doors at the Village Walk at Eastlake in fall of 2025, bringing a taste of international culinary tradition straight to Chula Vista. Originally founded in 1998 in Tagaytay City, Philippines, this beloved family-owned institution is famous for its cozy, garden-style aesthetic. The brand operates six locations internationally, five back home, and one right here in Eastlake. This new Eastlake venue marks their first expansion outside of the Philippines. According to owner and Eastlake local Anthony Jose—the true heart of Bag of Beans lies in its legendary bakery and coffee program. They proudly import authentic Kapeng Barako coffee beans straight from the Philippines. Made from the rare Liberica bean, Barako coffee is celebrated for its bold, full-bodied flavor and smoky, dark-chocolate aroma. Far beyond simply a coffee shop, Bag of Beans boasts an elegant well-decorated interior, a mix of classic and inspired Filipino dishes, an in-house bakery, and a full-service bar with specialty lattes and Filipino inspired creative cocktails. To bring a piece of their signature warmth into your own kitchen, try your hand at these two exclusive featured recipes.

Wear Colors That Truly

LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.

CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.

THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.

BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!

PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.
