LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Year on Your Coffee Table Twelve issues ago, we debuted our very first print edition with a singular vision: to cultivate a platform that honors the individuals, businesses, and stories that define the character of our community. Reflecting on this inaugural year, I am filled with profound gratitude for the extraordinary warmth with which you have embraced this publication and championed our mission. It is remarkably fitting that our one-year anniversary coincides with our annual Food & Drink Issue. Gathering around a shared table remains the quintessential human connection, and our local dining scene beautifully mirrors the rich tapestry of our region—a sophisticated blend of heritage, distinct flavors, and passionate family-owned establishments. Within these pages, you will discover exceptional local culinary talent, artisanal offerings, and treasured neighborhood destinations. Beyond the celebration of cuisine, however, this issue carries our deepest appreciation. Thank you to our discerning readers, esteemed business partners, dedicated non-profit organizations, civic leaders, and neighbors for making our foundational year in print so deeply rewarding. Cheers to building upon this foundation for an even more extraordinary Year Two! With Love Chula Vista-

ONE YEAR Meet Andrea, the founding Publisher of Chula Vista City Lifestyle magazine—the one you have in your hands right now. When Andrea was asked to relocate for her corporate job in early 2025, she knew the impact it would have on her family to pull them away from Chula Vista, the place they had called home for 13 years. A new chapter was on the horizon. Enter City Lifestyle Magazine. With a career built on fashion expertise, strategic sales leadership, and a passion for education, Andrea stepped away from the corporate ladder with a distinct mission. She applied her deep design intuition and mentorship background to launch a platform centered on real connection. Over the past year, her dedication has bridged area businesses and neighbors, turning a bold entrepreneurial pivot into a milestone year of local impact. When asked about the most rewarding part of her first year running Chula Vista City Lifestyle, Andera says it’s the stories. “The people I meet and the stories I hear are incredible. I get to see firsthand how the magazine is impacting our community.” Though there has been so much success, it hasn’t all been easy. There was a learning curve as she was reprogramming from the corporate world—learning how to be okay with losing function and efficiency for the sake of finding purpose. “Simply put,” she says, “I have met some of the most amazing people in this work. The 1% who step out on their own to run a business in pursuit of passion and to feed their families. The people and businesses that are fueling positive change across all generations, I am humbled to be welcomed into their world.” Beyond simply highlighting stories to readers in households across the city, Andrea also builds connections like an expert. In December of 2025 she began hosting monthly power mixers for business partners hosted at local businesses, restaurants, or hotels. These mixers offer the chance for businesses and community members to learn and laugh together. The point? To connect with the purpose of supporting one another— something we can all use more of in this world. What’s next for Chula Vista City Lifestyle? “We are just getting started,” says Andrea. “In the future of City Lifestyle Magazine I see the same abundant growth I see for Chula Vista.” Congratulations to Andrea, her team, and the first year of founding partners that made it all possible. Cheers to many more to come!

ARTICLE BY SARAH KRUEGER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY BAG OF BEANS

Bag of Beans—family owned and operated Filipino restaurant— offers a place to connect over traditional recipes, cross-cultural cuisine, fresh baked pastries, and creative signature cocktails.

Heritage, Hospitality, Family In Filipino culture, tables are for sharing. Meals are a way of connecting, honoring, and nurturing others, and food is a way to show love and care. Bag of Beans in Eastlake is a Filipino restaurant steeped in each of these values that brings with it a heritage of rich family history and the quintessential hospitality of Filipino families. Bag of Beans has six locations, each of them fully family owned and operated. Their most recent location opened right here in Eastlake in 2025, and is their first restaurant stateside. We sat down with company CEO and Eastlake Branch Operator, Anthony Jose, to learn about the history of the restaurant and his family ties, the delicious and creative food and drinks they serve, and the heart and soul of the Filipino community here in Chula Vista.

A FAMILY RESTAURANT THAT CARES

There are many businesses that focus solely on their financial success. At Bag of Beans, their success is also marked by the ways they give back to the community. “I feel a sense of responsibility to not only put out a good product but to give back and to represent Filipino culture well,” says Anthony. “My hope is that we are a place that other Filipinos feel proud of.” Having grown up in Eastlake, it is especially important to him to be rooted in the community. “My connection to Eastlake is everything. This place shaped me. Giving back to this community is actually very important to me.” In this spirit, the Bag of Beans team offers all sorts of ways for neighbors to come together at the restaurant. For example, Bag of Beans partners with Eastlake and Otay Ranch High Schools special education programs, bringing students in to learn about the industry and get hands-on experience. They also regularly host special events for local teams and families, host a weekly Sunday brunch, and schedule Karaoke and live music on the weekends. They offer catering for in-house events and delivery for off-site events—anything they can do to continue to offer hospitality. CONTINUED >

ROOTS FROM ACROSS THE OCEAN

The restaurant’s humble beginnings began in Tagaytay, Philippines in 1998. In the early days, Bag of Beans was a small corner cafe, serving coffees and baked goods in a small room about the size of a broom closet. Today, that original location still stands, though now it is widely known and seats over 500 people. Over time, the family grew the company to 6 brick and mortar locations in the Philippines and now, their 7th, right here in Chula Vista. What’s special about Bag of Beans is not just that they serve a wide variety of delicious, traditional Filipino flavors, that they import their coffee beans straight from the Philippines, or even that their fresh baked bread or creative Filipino inspired cocktails bring people back again and again. The most special thing about Bag of Beans is family. Their rich history and commitment to creating environments for people to celebrate in, connect in, and gather in, shines through in the energy of the space. The restaurant sits right in between fine dining and casual fare, offering an elevated environment to bring your family for a special event, your sports team for an end-of-season celebration, your grandparent for a 90th birthday, your colleagues for a work lunch, or your partner for a regular old weeknight dinner. It’s a place intended for everyone to feel welcome, always. OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C HUL AV I STA

“HAVING GROWN UP IN THE AREA, I FEEL A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY TO NOT ONLY PUT OUT A GOOD PRODUCT BUT TO GIVE BACK AND TO REPRESENT FILIPINO CULTURE WELL. MY HOPE IS THAT WE ARE A PLACE THAT OTHER FILIPINOS FEEL PROUD OF.”

FILIPINO FARE TO FILL YOU UP

With a vast menu containing a wide variety of dishes, there are a few at Bag of Beans that stand out. Their origins as a bakery mean their fresh baked goods are always a staple. The popular raisin bread, a must-have at their Philippines locations, tastes a little bit different here. “My background is as a scientist, so I tried to figure it out,” says Anthony. “ I figure it must be the pH of the water or something. I even sent my baker to the Philippines to try to duplicate it perfectly. It’s not quite there, but we’re getting closer.” When it comes to lunch and dinner meals, Kare Kare, a very popular Filipino stew with a peanut butter base, is a staple. Lechon Kawali — or crispy pork belly — is another go-to. Some of the dishes served at Bag of Beans are inspired by Filipino flavors, but pull away slightly from the traditional presentation. For example, sisig pizza takes sisig, or a Filipino style pork, and tosses it on a classic American pizza. When the dish was originally suggested by a team member, Anthony was hesitant…he couldn’t imagine people wanting to order it. But the response from guests surprised him — the dish became a quick hit that now gets ordered almost every day. The fun part about curating a menu inspired by a long history of delicious family recipes lies in the opportunity for experimentation—continuing to find new ways to feed people delicious meals, even when they’re least expected. That sense of creativity really shines when it comes to their specially curated cocktail menu. The Bag of Beans team often takes traditional cocktails and sprinkles in a Filipino twist. An adobo old fashioned, for example, takes a classic old fashioned and infuses it with adobo marinade—the same they use to flavor their meat. For some cocktails they add real ube milk

(not fake flavoring) or calamansi, a citrus fruit from the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Infusing their drinks with a taste of paradise increases exposure to traditional Filipino flavors in a fun and inviting experience.

A BAR? A BAKERY? A RESTAURANT?

The answer is yes! Whether you want to make a quick stop in for a pandan latte and a delicious pandesal (Filipino sweet bread) or stay for a lingering dinner turned into evening cocktails, Bag of Beans has something for you, your family, and your friends, all day long.

Chula Vista City Lifestyle x The Giving Partner Program WHERE STORYTELLING MEETS PURPOSE

One of the driving reasons I launched Chula Vista City Lifestyle was to create more than just a magazine. I wanted to build a platform that connects, uplifts, and celebrates the people and organizations making a real impact in our city. From that vision, the Giving Partner Program was born—a unique, local initiative designed to bridge the gap between small businesses and nonprofits through the power of storytelling.

Thank you to Steve Scholl, Founder of Local Hub Accelerator, for one year of inaugural support to the Giving Partner Program

HOW IT WORKS

1. A local business becomes a Giving Partner by sponsoring a nonprofit they believe in 2. The nonprofit receives a full year of editorial and advertising support—at no cost to them 3. Their mission and stories are shared across thousands of households in Chula Vista

WHAT THE NONPROFIT RECEIVES

• A monthly full-page ad for one year • One featured editorial article • Inclusion in City Scene, Business Monthly, and the Events Calendar This is storytelling with heart — and a way to harness the power of local business to make lasting change. We’re proud to spotlight the people doing good and the partners who support them.

First ever Giving Program Program recipient, SBCS, at their 2025 ribbon cutting

Become a Giving Partner You can support a cause you care about and amplify its mission across Chula Vista, one story at a time. WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE OUR 2026-2027 GIVING PARTNER - WHOLISTIC WELLNESS SERVICES. Perfect pairings of wine and cheese, straight from the experts There are some things in life that are just meant to go together. Wine and cheese are one. Erica Aros, Founder of Erica Aros Wine Education and “Your Friendly Wine Mentor” in Chula Vista, and Joye West, founder of Joye’s Gone Grazey Charcuterie and artisanal cheese and charcuterie expert, got together to offer three perfect pairings for you to drum up at your next get-together. Joye got into the business of grazing tables and boards because she believes in the power they have to bring people together. Each table and board she crafts is a lovingly curated creation of artisanal cheese, charcuterie, fresh fruits, and indulgent touches that spark conversation and connection. It is so important to her business that it’s encapsulated in her tagline: Creating special moments around LOVE. CONNECTION. CELEBRATION! Erica Aros is a wine educator and community builder in Chula Vista, whose business purpose is making wine education more approachable, engaging, and fun for her community. Her approach is intentionally different from traditional wine education—less intimidating, more conversational, and focused on sharing practical wine knowledge that people can use in their daily lives. While their businesses are separate from one another, sometimes teaming up just makes sense. Together, their aim is to make wine and cheese a cause for celebration, creating experiences for people that offer connection and contributing to the growing food, beverage, and community culture of the South Bay. You can find them on IG: @joyesgonegrazey and @yourfriendlywinementor.

The Wine and Cheese Experts This dynamic duo share in their love for celebrations, connections, and bringing people together over delicious cheese and wine. Here, they put together a series of approachable pairings that are sure to elevate your next gathering. Whether it’s a wedding, birthday, bridal shower, family gathering, or a cozy night in, these pairings are more than just food and drinks, they are an experience. More importantly, an opportunity for connection.

Prosecco + Double Cream Brie

Sauvignon Blanc + Garlic Herb Goat Cheese

Pinot Noir + Gouda

Perfect for your next brunch, celebratory happy hour, or ladies night bubbles. The luxurious richness of the double cream brie coats your mouth and melts across your palate, while the crisp bubbles of the prosecco slice through the richness, offering a bright and refreshing counterpoint. Each creamy bite and effervescent sip will leave you floating in a sea of lightness, ready for your next taste.

This pairing is for those who love a zesty finish. The bright, tangy taste of the goat cheese echoes the signature acidity of Sauvignon Blanc, creating a beautiful balance on your palate. The creamy, soft texture of the chèvre is refreshed by the wine’s crisp, refreshing finish, while the garlic and herb flavors shine through. Bring this one out at your next party for a show-stopping combo.

Classy and comfortable, this pairing is a go-to for your next date night or pre-dinner appetizer. Buttery, mild, and delicately creamy, Gouda provides an elegant canvas for Pinot Noir’s lush notes of strawberry and raspberry without overpowering the flavors that come through. The cheese’s gentle sweetness softens the wine’s fruit-forward character, allowing its bright berry flavors to linger beautifully on the palate. A classic combo.

maple pumpkin parfait

A FALL-INSPIRED MAPLE PUMPKIN GRANOLA WITH PUMPKIN YOGURT ARTICLE BY ALYSSA LAVY, MS, RD, CDN, CPT

4. Line a large baking sheet (9 x 13 inches works well) with parchment paper and spray with nonstick cooking oil spray. Transfer oats to baking sheet and spread in a thin, even layer. 5. Bake in oven for 1 hour, mixing at 30 minutes and 45 minutes. 6. Remove oats from oven briefly. Add pumpkin seeds, chopped walnuts, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and remaining ¼ C pure maple syrup. Mix with a spatula and return to oven to bake for another 30 minutes, mixing halfway through. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes before using a spatula to transfer to container. Do not wait too long to transfer granola as it can stick to the parchment paper as it cools.

maple pumpkin granola

(Yields approximately 4.5 cups or 18 – ¼ C servings)

ingredients:

• 2 ½ C rolled oats • 1 C pumpkin seeds, hulled • ½ C unsalted walnuts, chopped • 2 Tbsp canned pumpkin puree (Note: the only ingredient should be pumpkin – this is different than pumpkin pie filling) • 1 Tbsp water • 2 Tbsp avocado oil or vegetable oil • ½ C pure maple syrup, divided into 2- ¼ C servings

• • • • •

2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice ¼ tsp salt Nonstick cooking oil spray

pumpkin yogurt

yogurt

directions: 1. Combine all yogurt ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Top with a handful of the maple pumpkin granola, serve immediately and enjoy! Note: This granola can be stored in an airtight container and stored in a cool, dry place for up to 1 week. While this granola is made with gluten free ingredients, I recommend using certified gluten free ingredients if needed . Yogurt can be made with a suitable dairy-free alternative if you need this recipe to be dairy-free and the honey can be swapped for pure maple syrup to make the dairy-free yogurt recipe suitable for a vegan diet. The granola and the yogurt can each be enjoyed on their own, but they complement each other so nicely! This Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait is a perfect way to celebrate autumn’s most famous flavors in a nutritious way! Pumpkin, maple syrup and warm spices, such as cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice, give cozy vibes that are traditionally found in baked goods this time of year. However, while pumpkin bread, muffins, cookies and other fall flavored baked goods are certainly delicious and should be enjoyed, this Maple Pumpkin Granola Parfait provides the satisfaction of those fall flavors in a lighter way, while providing ample protein and fiber. It is the perfect, slightly sweet and balanced way to start the day – or to enjoy anytime! Website: alyssalavy.com Instagram: @alyssalavyrd
