Exploring the Heart of Chula Vista

I find myself heading up San Miguel Mountain often. There’s something about the climb and that specific view from the summit that resets my perspective. Looking out over the rooftops, the winding streets, and the vast horizon of Chula Vista, I’m always struck by how much life and potential is tucked into every corner of our city.

July is our “Explore” issue, and while the beauty of our local trails is a gift, I’ve realized that the most important exploration happens when we descend the mountain and re-enter the heartbeat of our neighborhoods. To explore a community is to truly see its people and the innovative ways they are showing up for one another.

In this issue, we invite you to do just that. We dive into the power of exploring our personal histories and memories, the excitement of traveling across new horizons, and the luxury of discovering world-class destinations right in our own backyard. Whether you are reconnecting with the past, embarking on a new journey, or uncovering a hidden gem in our community, the goal is to take the scenic route.

As a mom and a business owner, I know how easy it is to stay in our own bubbles. But this July, I hope you’ll join me in stepping out to rediscover the heart of our community. Let’s look around, start a new conversation, and fall in love with the people and places that make Chula Vista so vibrant.

I’ll see you out there!

A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST

IN A WORLD THAT LOOKS AT DEMENTIA THROUGH A BLEAK LENS, GEORGE G. GLENNER ALZHEIMER FAMILY CENTERS TOWN SQUARE® MAKES IT JUST A LITTLE BIT BRIGHTER.

For many with loved ones suffering from dementia, things can feel exceptionally gloomy. Isolation, confusion, and exhaustion mark their days as they care for a friend or family member with increasing cognitive decline. At Glenner Centers Town Square® in Chula Vista, people with dementia and caregivers alike are offered a little bit of room to breathe.

When you first walk into the center, you don’t expect to see what’s in front of you. Inside of the 20,000 square foot building is an immersive, realistic replica of an entire 1950’s town, complete with a classic diner, a pub, a pet store, museum, beauty shop, department store, library, movie theater, and a turf lawn at the center of it all. This is called the “Town Square®” and serves as a daytime care center for those suffering with memory loss. The point? To create an environment that helps participants feel comfortable and at ease, removing the oh-so-common sense of overwhelm and confusion that accompanies their disease.

“The main goal of Town Square is to help our participants to feel safe, enjoy each moment, and maintain their abilities,” says Chief Marketing Officer Lisa Tyburski. “We don’t view them from a lens of what they can no longer do, but rather what they CAN do.” The 1950s

Town Square® design isn’t meant to “trick” participants into believing they’re living in 1955, but rather to create a space that feels familiar, calming, and joyful. Given that long-term memory is often more accessible to people with dementia, when participants walk into a place that replicates the environments they grew up in, they are more likely to participate fully and feel at ease throughout their day.

The George G. Glenner Family Alzheimer Centers was founded in 1982 by George Glenner—a renowned scientist who discovered the Beta-Amyloid Peptide, a significant biological marker linked to Alzheimer’s disease. He and his wife, Joy, opened the first center after receiving a concerning call from a distressed caregiver. George and his wife knew at that moment that despite the growing progress in Alzheimer’s research, caregivers and patients couldn’t wait for the next breakthrough in medical research. They needed support right away, in their everyday lives. The Glenners opened their first center in Hillcrest with the understanding that a safe and engaging place for people with Alzheimer’s to spend their daytime hours offers much needed support to everyone involved. Caregiver fatigue is real. Glenner Center’s daytime care facility knows that, which is why they strive to give loved ones a little bit of their daily life back.

“THE MAIN GOAL OF TOWN SQUARE IS TO HELP OUR PARTICIPANTS TO FEEL SAFE, ENJOY EACH MOMENT, AND MAINTAIN THEIR ABILITIES”

A JOURNEY INTO THE PAST, FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT REMEMBER

The Glenner Centers Town Square® was designed to look like the 1950s for a reason. The majority of patients are in their 80s, which means the 50s was the time period when they experienced significant life events like graduations, marriages, and raising children. By choosing to replicate the look and feel of that time period, the creators are simulating an environment that feels familiar to participants and is linked to their long-term memory.

What sets the Glenner Centers Town Square apart even more is their use of immersive Reminiscence Therapy, a type of therapy that uses prompts from a person’s past to elicit memories. At the center, you’ll often see old movies running in the theater, 1950’s

music playing in the background, or performers performing familiar pieces. Staff members trained in dementia care run workshops like painting, crafts, filing, or simple history lessons to jog the memory of participants and offer them opportunities for deep engagement.

The activities that participants have the opportunity to enjoy are encapsulated by the center’s signature program called S.P.I.C.E. Spice stands for Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Educational, and illustrates the categories that each activity falls into. Last month, for example, participants had the chance to experience a wide variety of activities from games like bingo and pub games to memory and movement tasks like sorting and filing, exercise, cosmetology, crafting, movies, “armchair travel,” mixology, puzzles, visual poetry, architecture and woodworking clubs, or jewelry making. The options for participants to explore their hobbies and interests are endless, bringing connection and engagement to everyone involved.

While common for a person with dementia’s world to become smaller and more isolated, the Glenner Center Town Square® offers them the chance to expand into a more enriching daily life. The center helps them make friends, socialize with others, participate in therapeutic activities, try things they haven’t in years, and explore their environment in a way that is intentionally designed for their safety, peace, and joy.

The Glenner Centers Town Square® is where participants and caregivers alike can find the brightness in their days again, and take their most profound journey of all—the one that brings them back into joy.

The binational bridge that’s changing the face of travel in the Cali-Baja region

ARTICLE BY SARAH KRUEGER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CBX

In 2015, a wildly innovative idea came to fruition. Connecting two vibrant communities—San Diego and Tijuana—the Cross Border Xpress, or CBX, became a literal bridge between the two nations, offering travelers an easily accessible means of travel between California and Baja California, MX

The idea stemmed from the desire to solve an obvious problem: the San Diego airport needs more space. As the busiest international single-runway airport in the U.S., the demand for travel from San Diego is high, yet there is zero room for growth. Rather than build an entirely new binational airport for the region, investors and innovators had the idea, “What if we connect San Diego travelers to the Tijuana Airport instead?”

At the time, the Tijuana airport was growing at a rate of about 2% each year and flew only to a small handful of destinations. Today, as a direct result of CBX, the Tijuana airport is growing at 15% year over year and now flies to more than 35 destinations directly. The new flights connect travelers not only to popular cities in Mexico, but to destinations across Central America, South America, Europe, and Asia, putting the entire world right at our fingertips. CBX Chief Commercial Officer Eduardo Schutte says that this past year, over 4 million travelers were serviced at the Tijuana airport, hugely a result of CBX, and that the estimated economic impact to the region is $1.5 billion each year, with expectations that it will only continue to grow. With such significant impact, it’s no surprise that CBX is heralded as a leader in travel and binational innovation.

TRAVEL MADE SIMPLE

It could not be more simple to travel using CBX. When purchasing flights with an airline, all you need to do is click a single button to add on the bridge fee, and you’re good to go. Prefer to purchase in person? Just walk up to a kiosk and grab your ticket.

The benefits of CBX travel are endless—the ease of purchasing a ticket is just the beginning. First, it’s worth noting that when you use CBX, you go through customs on the front end of your flight, meaning you won’t need to do it when you land. No need to be worried about wait times, either, because compared to other airports, the ones at CBX are nearly nonexistent.

Are you someone who worries about parking? CBX has you covered there, too. Affordable, long-term parking is available on both sides of the border, with significant discounts for Southern California residents. That means you can scrap your concern about grabbing an expensive rideshare or asking that family friend to drop you off yet again, and simply arrive, leave your car in a safe lot in San Diego, and walk right across into the Tijuana airport to catch your flight. Still don’t want to drive? They also offer shuttle services to Los Angeles, Los Vegas, El Paso, Phoenix, and Oxnard as well as private transport and rental cars. No matter your situation, the ease of getting to CBX for your flight is unmatched.

When looking to the horizon, the team at CBX has huge plans. Soon, their offerings won’t stop at fights and rides. If you’re looking for ways to enhance your vacation, all you will need to do is consult their website for a whole host of offers for tours, excursions, theme park tickets, and experiences. Paired with their offers of medical travel insurance and SIM cards, you’ll have a one-stop-shop for your next family vacation that makes planning a true breeze.

In the coming years, CBX also has plans to help expand the terminal at the Tijuana airport, build a ground transportation center to house their transportation partners, and even build a hotel onsite so travelers with early morning and late night flights have the ease of overnight rest before continuing on their journey. There is no stopping the momentum they’ve built—CBX has brought vigor to the region that travelers are hungry for and their acceleration level has one speed: fast.

At the end of the day, the San Diego-Tijuana border region is built on collaboration, innovation, and cross-border friendship. A bridge like CBX not only helps increase economic progress and amplify access to travel opportunities, it does something much more profound. It increases diplomacy, acting as an avenue to deepen positive relationships between the U.S. and Mexico. In a time when so much of our world is divided, it’s an honor that our very own backyard serves as a leading example of what true binational collaboration can look like. In our minds, that’s always a win.

WHERE WILL YOU ADVENTURE?

We sat down with Eduardo Schutte, Chief Commercial Officer, of CBX and asked him about the best travel destinations in Mexico this year for CBX travelers to consider. His answers have our travel bugs itching.

There are, of course, the beach towns. The whisper of the waves in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, La Paz, or Puerto Escondido call the names of those looking for a coastal respite. Beyond the travel guides and vacation hot spots, though, are a number of colorful Mexican towns drenched in culture, history, and community. At the top of Eduardo’s list is Merida, the capital of Yucatán and a bustling city with a rich history and indigenous roots. It makes for the perfect basecamp to explore surrounding archeological sites, colonial sites, and small surrounding towns full of inviting charm.

If you’re like us, all this talk of travel means it’s time for an adventure. Where will you go next?

In a time when so much of our world is divided, it’s an honor that our very own backyard serves as a leading example of what true binational collaboration can look like.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

FEATURING JEN COHEN

Discover the full 10% Target Mindset framework.

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

As temperatures rise, children race to the freezer for this frosty treat or wait anxiously for the approach of the musical ice cream truck. Making homemade popsicles is a fun, kidfriendly activity. These recipes feature kid-favorite flavors with an added taste twist. The only tricky part is waiting for them to freeze.

SPICED GRAPE POPSICLES

Makes 18 to 24

• 2 quarts Concord grape juice

• 1/2 cup sugar

• 12 whole cloves

• 4 cinnamon sticks

• 3 tablespoons whole allspice

CHERRY LIMEADE POPSICLES ingredients:

Makes 18 to 24

• 2 cups sugar

• 2 cups water

• 1 cup lime juice

• 2 cups tart cherry juice
