The Joy of Kids and Pets

Dear readers,

Happy August! The Theme for this month’s issue is Kids and Pets - two of my absolute favorite things! From a young age I gravitated toward the littles and the animals at every party, because they were always the most fun. When the world is complicated, I’ve always felt like it’s the kids that have it figured out. When things are tough or confusing, it’s the pets who help me calm down and cozy up.

I am so excited that this month we get to highlight the furry family members and the children who remind us to keep the joy in our lives!

This time of year can bring a mix of feelings for many. Joy and freedom because summer is in full swing, but also checklists and planning as the new school year rolls around and the fall season is on the precipice. I’ve spent a good chunk of my life by the clock of the school calendar, despite not having kids of my own. My career has been filled working with children in schools and summer programs and spending time with my nieces, nephews, and children of close friends. Being surrounded by kids for so long means that this time of year is when we prepare to get back to the normalcy that follows the summer months.

Our hope is that this issue will offer some levity as you enter back into these months. As you flip through pages highlighting cute animals and read about youth learning to be leaders or ways to help care for and protect your family, we hope you feel connected to the joy and comforts that kids and pets bring to our lives.

From my goldendoodle Tala and my orange tabby cat Oliver, straight to your family - we wish you happy reading and a wonderful month!

PROTECTING what matters MOST

Local law firm representing families now, for a safer future tomorrow

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY NAHAMA LAW

When it comes to child safety, it’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure we’re doing all we can to keep them protected. An unfortunate incident impacting the wellbeing of a child is most people’s worst nightmare. Sometimes, though, no matter how much we prepare, the unimaginable happens.

When it does, an experienced personal injury attorney can help your family find a sense of direction, peace of mind, and make sure you’re protected for the future. Carree Nahama of Nahama Law lives right here in Chula Vista and has dedicated her career to supporting individuals, families, and children with personal injury claims. While her and her team have a broad range of expertise, protecting children is something she is especially passionate about.

Carree Nahama knew she wanted to be a lawyer from a very young age. When her elementary school classmates shared that they wanted to be a firefighter or ice cream shop owner, Carree told her teachers that she wanted to pursue law. She’s never strayed, and today she has a committed and successful career supporting people during some of their most trying times, ensuring their stories are heard and their road toward justice is well-supported.

Injuries to children happen in all kinds of unexpected circumstances. Whether it’s in a school setting, a car accident, or a dog bite, it can be disorienting for families to know what the next step should be. An initial consultation call to Nahama Law is free of charge and can make a huge difference in the trajectory of your situation. Calling as soon as possible is always the best way to move forward after an incident has left you or a loved one injured or violated.

INJURY-PROOFING THE FUTURE

To fully appreciate Carree’s work, it helps to understand the role plaintiff attorneys have played in shaping many of the safety standards families rely on today. While their day-to-day work begins with helping individuals navigate life-altering tragedies, its impact extends far beyond any single case. Many of the protections that are now considered commonplace— things like seatbelt design, safer airbag technology, carseat designs, and consumer safety

regulations—are the result of plaintiff’s attorneys who hold manufacturers accountable and push for meaningful change. The long impact of their work helps to protect future generations and create lasting improvements in the well-being of children and families.

When we asked Carree what was the most rewarding about her career, she reflected on the fact that sometimes people can feel “jaded” when it comes to achieving justice after a personal injury—meaning they feel hopeless calling a lawyer or don’t trust that they will find a way forward after their incident. Her team works to break through that barrier with their years of experience and pave a way forward for their clients.

“I recently worked with a family on a case involving her child’s injury, and we had to go to trial twice. At the end, when the jury verdict was read in our favor, it was like the doors opened wide. I can’t explain the way it feels, other than it feels like justice. It’s the most amazing feeling for our clients.”

Carree has kids of her own, and is very familiar with the risks associated with raising children in our modern world. Given her background in child injury law, she is proactive in conversations with her children. As a parent of teenagers and new drivers, she talks with them regularly about the risks of driving, what to look out for, and what to do in case of an emergency. No matter the age of your children, these kinds of conversations can save lives. For parents with littles: have conversations with your school. Research the places you send your child. There is no limit when it comes to asking questions to make sure your loved ones are safe and protected. It’s better to be over-informed than to find yourself on the tragic side of an incident.

In an ideal world, you and your family would never need to worry about calling Carree and the team at Nahama Law. On the off chance that you experience what no family should have to, though, it helps to have a caring, informed, dedicated, and honest lawyer by your side to help walk you through the process. Children are our future, and it’s up to us to protect them.

In addition to supporting families and children, Carree is a huge animal lover! She is the proud pet parent of a French Bulldog, a rescue, and helps care for a neighbor’s horse named Joey on a regular basis. “My animals are my safe place,” she says. “They are so good for mental health. I just can’t believe I get the opportunity to take care of them every day. I feel so lucky!”

Where Future Leaders Begin

Scouting America’s impact on Chula Vista Youth

Few experiences are as rewarding as watching a shy eleven-year-old grow into a confident young leader. For Scouting America volunteers, it’s one of the many reasons they continue to be a part of the impactful organization.

Scouting has a rich history in San Diego, with some of the first ever scout troops formed right here in the early 1900’s. In the 1920’s, Camp Balboa opened and became a central gathering place for training, events, and community activities. Since then, many camps have followed, including Camp Bashor right here near Otay Lakes in Chula Vista.

Throughout its history, American Scouting has emphasized service, leadership, outdoor adventure, and citizenship. Their motto, “Be Prepared,” remains an essential part of its mission. Today, Scouting America offers children and teens a place to belong: a community where they can develop confidence, leadership, and responsibility while creating lifelong memories and experiencing unforgettable adventures.

We recently had the chance to sit down with Scouting leaders in the San Diego Council and Sweetwater region to talk about the impact of scouting in our community. Jaqueline Ficarra, District Executive for Scouting America in the San Diego Council, Brent Morgan, Sweetwater District Committee Chair, and Dan Bauer, Scoutmaster for Troop 1194 each shared the impact that scouting has had on them, their children, and the San Diego community.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

“My favorite part about volunteering with the organization,” says Brent, “is seeing the growth of the Scouts. I see them join us just after 5th grade, unsure of themselves and a bit nervous. By the time they’re in their teens, they’ve done their Eagle Scout projects, they’ve worked on their communication and public speaking, gone on multiple adventures, and are so much more confident in themselves and their abilities.”

Dan Bauer has the opportunity to work with some of the younger Scouts. For him, one of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering is witnessing their joy and excitement about being together and having fun, not even realizing they’re learning something valuable along the way. “To get that type of exposure to the values we teach in scouting—citizenship, respect, and our duty to God, all while having fun, it just keeps me jazzed.”

A WORD FROM THE SCOUTS

A quintessential example of an energetic scout, Fabiola is 14-yearsold and already working on her Eagle Scout project. She shares, “My

favorite thing about scouting is the community and connections, like when I attended the international camporee with Scouts Interamerica and went to Switzerland for summer camp. Without being a part of the troop, I wouldn’t have such great opportunities to meet new people, make lasting relationships, and travel the world.” Scouts also taught her about leadership. “To be a good leader you need to actively listen to others ideas, become flexible in your perspective, and understand that everyone’s role is important,” she says, with clarity far beyond her years.

Kevin is a student at UCSD and an Eagle Scout whose journey with Scouts was deeply meaningful. Like many, he absolutely loved the adventure: “I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors and the mountains. Scouts gave me the opportunity and the motivation to join some of the most beautiful hikes and backpacking trips in the southwest of the US.” Similar to Fabiola, he credits Scouts with learning to be a good leader.

“I helped lead the summer camps in 2022 and 2023, which taught me how to work through the challenges that our troop faced.” His proudest moment in Scouts was achieving his Eagle Scout Rank just a few hours before his 18th birthday. “I barely made it, but I’m just so happy that I accomplished my goal of being an Eagle Scout one day!”

Scouting America has been through many iterations since its founding, but one thing is clear: the positive impact on young leaders is undeniable. Today’s scouting programs are inclusive and inviting, open to boys, girls, and even families. With so many people involved in meaningful programming, the impact extends far beyond the individual Scout, rippling outward to families, schools, and the communities where they volunteer, lead, and serve. Strong communities are built by people who understand the value of service, leadership, and responsibility—things that nobody fosters better than the Scouts!

A Community Built on Trust and Treats

High-quality care for your furry family members, offered by your friendly neighborhood pet sitters

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY FUZZY BUDDIES

Friendly dogs, cuddly cats, bashful bunnies and beckoning birds all around Chula Vista are being loved not only by their owners, but by the caring and professional pet sitters of Fuzzy Buddies Pet Sitting.

If you’re like us, you consider pets as part of the family. You know that when you leave home for a vacation, work trip, or family holiday, one of the most difficult parts is finding loving and attentive care for your fur babies while you’re away. Sure, there are apps you can download and sleep away boarding centers you can book, but something about those options feels just a little less personal.

With Fuzzy Buddies, it feels different. Like calling up an old friend. Steven Naegele, Fuzzy Buddies Founder and Owner, began the company in 2007 after a big life change had him rethinking his future. When asked why he started a pet sitting business, his answer is straightforward and full of energy: “I love animals!”

For Steven, nothing is better than showing up to a client’s home and being greeted by a happy pet full of energy. “It brightens my day every time,” he exclaims.

The Fuzzy Buddies difference lies in the personal touches and small details of care. When you hire a stranger to check on your pets, you never know what you’re going to get. Steven, on the other hand, knows every pet he cares for by name and quickly gets to know their unique personalities and quirks. With the smallbut-mighty Fuzzy Buddies team, you can be confident that you will receive consistent and attentive care for your pets in your own home, with all of the toys, supplies, and comforts that your pet is used to. When you’re away, it can also be challenging to take care of the smaller tasks, like checking the mail. Steven and his team often offer above and beyond support like light cleaning, mail checks, and small house tasks, if they have the capacity. That means you can rest easy with the comfort that comes with knowing an enthusiastic pet expert is dropping in to care for your little loved one AND your home, while you’re away.

It’s easy to start your relationship with the friendly sitters at Fuzzy Buddies. The first step is to submit an inquiry online. Steven and his team will follow up with a text or email within 24-48 hours to set up a time to meet your furry baby. You’ll want to make sure to reserve early, especially during the holiday season, because they can get fully booked. Rather than

focusing on growing into a huge business and expanding their team and offerings when they book up, Steven and his team intentionally choose to remain a boutique, family owned and operated business because it allows them the best opportunity to provide the high-quality, attentive, and detail-oriented care that they’re known for. They understand that your pets are family and they make sure that they have the capacity to treat them like it during every visit.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY

The Fuzzy Buddies team is deeply involved with the Chula Vista community. They are members and regular attendees of the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce and the Chula Vista Charitable Foundation, and they donate regularly to local pet charities. For them, being involved in the local community is about building connections and caring for their neighbors. It’s an important piece of their values and business model and something they take seriously as they continue to choose where to invest their time and committments. If you’re looking for a community-focused, detail oriented, and friendly neighborhood pet sitter the next time you leave town or have a long work day ahead of you, rest assured knowing Fuzzy Buddies has your back!

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.
