Finding Your Calling as a Kid

There is nothing more important in the world than our children. This issue is for them. Children are the future and we can not take that statement for granted as it is important to remember how easy it is to change the course of a child's life.  One event; one precious moment at a time—just one and that moment could quite possibly transform who that child becomes as an adult.

As a young child in the first grade, for me, it was attendance at a talent show, a mandatory school assembly during lunch hour. I had no idea what I was about to experience before taking my seat on the floor, but I remember how magical the room felt and how different and beautiful surrounded by shimmering aqua and forest green streamers with underwater themed decor overhead. As a child, the transformation of the school cafeteria was a jaw dropping spectacle in and of itself. Then, students from 2nd grade, one by one, took center stage to demonstrate the various sounds that can come out of the human body. I experienced everything from broadway belters to alternative rock in a live setting for the very first time. The wide ranging sounds and styles and each student's ability to sing blew me away. I remember feeling overwhelmed by how special and awesome it was yet how disappointed I was nobody asked me if I wanted to participate (when I didn't even know if I could sing)! I just knew I had to based on  one moment  in my life as a child . Powerful.

My mom picked me up from school that day and I rushed into her arms crying "how come no one asked if I wanted to sing, mom"?! That moment triggered a journey that led to two music degrees and a teaching position as a university professor. I have no idea whose idea it was to host a talent show way back in '91, but whoever you are THANK YOU. You changed a kid's life.

This is all to say, I hope this issue inspires you to directly impact the children in your life by exposing them to music. Maybe put a guitar in their hand, a keyboard? Enroll them in dance or expose them to building robots and playing cello. Expose them to face painting! Who knows, maybe that small moment of examining another or their own through a mirror creates the next Laura Mercier or Pierre Renoir?

dōTERRA recently launched its summertime suncare line, which includes a couple different delivery methods and more importantly, they provide mineral sunscreen protection that includes skin nourishing ingredients like vitamin E, aloe vera, turmeric extract, jojoba esters, raspberry seed oil, and avocado oil.

In addition to its topical products, dōTERRA also offers a variety of supplements and wellness products that support living a wellness lifestyle.

Going to the dentist can be an anxiety-producing event for many, especially for children. However, it doesn’t have to be. At Chino Spectrum Dental, patients can rest easy knowing that the number one priority is their well-being.

Chino Spectrum Dental is powered by a team of women trained to provide patients both new and old with comprehensive dental care. The staff includes Jessica Poulter, Registered Dental Hygienist, Lety Duran, Office Administrator and Registered Dental Assistant, Elena Laurel, Dental Assistant, Yajaira Morales, Dental Assistant and owner Dr. Fenny Virgin, DDS, who began as a dentist in Indonesia in 1992, and moved to the United States in 2001 to continue dentistry.

Chino Spectrum Dental has been serving the Chino Valley since 1989, and Dr. Fenny Virgin has owned the practice since 2015.

Their office provides a wide range of services including cosmetic dentistry, crowns, bridges, dentures, Invisalign, root canals, teeth whitening, and more. One thing that Dr. Fenny prides herself in is having a family-like care towards patients. While she says she has seen patients afraid to come into the office for a visit or had negative dentist experiences in the past, she feels a sense of pride when they tell her they can be at ease with her and her staff.

Chino Spectrum Dental has a philosophy that sets them apart from other dentist offices in the area.

“When I worked for a big corporate office, they treated patients like a number,” Virgin says. “But in my office, no, I don't want people to feel that way because that’s not how we are, and I share that philosophy with my staff.”

Dr. Fenny Virgin says she would love to see more children in her office, offers tips on how to maintain children’s dental health and provides guidelines.

TIP 1: GETTING CHILDREN INTO THEIR FIRST DENTAL APPOINTMENT

A first visit for children should be in infancy, at 12 months or 6 months after their first teeth come in, Virgin says. Dental health should begin before the first dentist visit, by cleaning gums. When teeth come in, parents should help in dental care by using a baby toothbrush or gauze to brush teeth.

TIP 2:  DEVELOP A REGULAR BRUSHING SCHEDULE

Children who can brush on their own should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day. Additionally, children should be rinsing their mouth out with water after eating sweet snacks, Virgin says. Baby teeth are not as strong as adult teeth, and more prone to cavities. Rinsing after having sugary snacks can help prevent cavities from developing.

TIP 3: MAKE FLOSSING ACCESSIBLE FOR CHILDREN

Virgin says that flossing is important for all ages, but because string floss can be difficult for children to use, she recommends that children use floss picks first, especially ones designed for children's hands that can be found in stores. While teaching kids to floss may be challenging at first, it is an important step in their dental health and must be practiced over time.

One Chino-Valley based entertainment company gives any event a special touch

BRING THE MAGIC TO A PARTY WITH FIESTA FANTASTIC

When celebrating milestones or achievements, bringing the magic and fun is what takes an event from special to memorable for children and adults alike. Fiesta Fantastic, an entertainment company based in southern California, is committed to making the magic happen at any event or gathering.

Founder Hector and Lori Arias built Fiesta Fantastic from the ground up. It began while Hector was taking classes at Biola University, and began working for a party entertainment company to make money for school. However, doing different party tricks in costumes by himself for an entire party became a task. He decided to branch off and pursue entertaining on his own in 2005, and has built a team including his wife Lori that brings quality entertainment including magic tricks, balloon twisting, and face painting. Their company also has a trackless train for rent similar to ones used in shopping malls, that children can ride.

Fiesta Fantastic performs at many different events, but specializes in children’s birthday parties. They serve the greater Los Angeles area, including clients in Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange, and Los Angeles counties.

Lori Arias, who studied art in college, began entertaining with Hector while they were dating in college, and realized that the one man show needed some help. She now paints colorful and unique face painting designs for their events as well as assisting with balloon twisting. Fiesta Fantastic is a great entertainment addition to any event. They work private parties, birthday parties, church events, school functions and parties, company picnics, as well as city holiday events including the Fourth of July and Easter egg hunts. Aside from the Arias’, they have multiple entertainers on their team that can do face painting or balloon twisting, who can be hired separately for a party. The live magic show, however, is Hector’s specialty.

Hector says that providing quality service is of utmost importance to him and the Fiesta Fantastic team, as many people use precious time and money to have enjoyable parties for their children and loved ones, and want it to be a positive experience to look back on.

“Some people save for months, and this might be the first and only time some of these children ever get to see a live magic show, or face painting, or balloon twisting, especially a trackless train, so we want to make sure we bring it,” Hector says.

After years of experience in the party entertainment industry, Fiesta Fantastic has interacted with many vendors and has built a level of vendor knowledge they share with party hosts. They recommend vendors to clients that offer services other than their own such as petting zoos, concession stand vendors, caterers, taco vendors, and more.

“We’ve seen their work, so we know when we recommend somebody to a vendor, we’re not just blindly giving their number,” Lori says.

One thing that separates Fiesta Fantastic aside from the range of party entertainers is their commitment to consistency, punctuality, and reliability. Showing up to events on time, upholding their bookings, and making their presence truly entertaining for guests are a few ways that they establish their customer service.

“This is an important event in their life and everyone’s there to enjoy themselves, so we want to deliver a product that adds to the party,” Lori says.

Backyard Chickens

Everything you need to get started on your backyard coop.

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.

The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.

Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things To Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple hen house can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through Spring and Summer and into the Fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.

Backyard Chicken Q&A:

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.

HOW MUCH DOES KEEPING CHICKENS COST?

All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor. Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.

WHAT KIND OF SHELTER DO THEY NEED?

Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor

run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.

WHEN DO CHICKENS START LAYING EGGS?

Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.

Building the next generation of innovators one robot at a time...

MagiKids Robotics Labs gears up for a summer of fun learning at their lab in Chino Hills. The company teaches young children how to code and build robots through a variety of classes, programs and competitions. Their goal is to equip children with the essential skills to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Estevan Anguiano, the instructional manager at MagiKids, said the company’s mission is to inspire children to continue down the path of STEM activities.

“Seeing kids grow skills that will benefit them in the future is pretty much something we like to see,” Anguiano said. “We can develop newer technologies and actually help make other people’s lives easier.”

The owner of MagiKids, Kristie Lee, also said she wants to bring awareness of math and science competitions to Chino Hills. She said programming and robotics can help students in the future as well.

“Right now, for the university, it’s not just like you have good grades and you can go to a good university. You need to have diverse knowledge,” Lee said.

Anguiano said MagiKids can help change the lives of children by encouraging them to pursue math and science-based careers in the future.
