Where to Escape the Crowds

AND BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER IN EUROPE

I recently returned from a trip to Europe this spring, and the crowds were already overwhelming due to overtourism. This summer, as high-season travel rolls around, I am advising my clients to bypass the crowds and enjoy European charm the way it should be enjoyed. Here are some of my top picks:

Évora, Portugal

Évora offers whitewashed streets, Roman history, exceptional Alentejo wines, and a slower Portuguese rhythm. Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, it’s ideal for travelers seeking culture, gastronomy, and understated luxury beyond Lisbon and Porto. This can also be combined with any of the mentioned options for Spain or Madeira

Madeira & The Azores in Portugal

Madeira and the Azores offer volcanic coastlines, lush mountains, botanical gardens, and year-round mild weather. Known as the “Hawaii of Europe,” Madeira blends hiking, wellness, and refined island luxury, while the Azores remain remote, sustainable, and refreshingly untouched by mass tourism

Costa Brava or Northern Spain for Spanish Beaches

Beyond Barcelona, Costa Brava offers rugged coastlines, hidden coves, exceptional cuisine, and Dalí-inspired artistic heritage. Seaside towns like Cadaqués and Begur blend Mediterranean beauty with understated sophistication, while Northern Spain, from San Sebastián to Galicia, delivers dramatic landscapes, world-class food, and authentic culture far from the crowds.

Scotland Beyond Edinburgh

Travelers are turning toward Scotland’s Highlands, Isle of Harris, Orkney, and the dramatic west coast rail routes for wild beauty and “slow travel.” Expect lochs, remote beaches, hiking trails, and storybook villages untouched by mass tourism.

Slovenia: Beaches, Mountains & Vineyards

Slovenia quietly delivers everything travelers crave: Adriatic coastline in Piran, Alpine escapes near Lake Bohinj, and award-winning vineyards in Maribor. It’s Europe’s rare destination combining beach, mountains, wine, and sustainability without the crowds and you can enjoy a nice Bled Cake overlooking a castle to boot!

THE JEWELER TO THE JUGGERNAUTS

DESIGNING ICONIC SYMBOLS OF AMERICAN HERITAGE FOR THE WORLD’S LEADERS.

For over thirty-six years, Ann Hand has occupied a singular space in the American landscape, operating at the intersection of fine jewelry and political history. Known as the “Jeweler to the Washington Power Elite,” her creations have graced the lapels of presidents, diplomats, and dignitaries, becoming a staple of the capital’s visual language. From her studio, she transforms brass, gold, and enamel into powerful emblems of national pride. Her work is more than ornamentation; it is a storied archive of American patriotism, craftsmanship, and shared identity.

THE SILENT LANGUAGE OF THE PIN

The aesthetic of Ann Hand is deeply intertwined with the unique atmosphere of Washington, D.C., a city defined by power, protocol, and the art of quiet signaling. Her designs serve as a medium for communication where words often fall short. Hand notes that jewelry can express “shared ideals, common purpose, and deeply held convictions without a single word being spoken”. This philosophy of “quiet signaling” was perhaps most famously embodied by Secretary Madeleine Albright, who treated her collection of pins as a “Diplomatic arsenal”. For Hand, entering a room wearing an American symbol provides an immediate, powerful presence that transcends standard dialogue.

Despite the heavy symbolic weight her pieces often carry, Hand maintains a grounded approach to the artistry itself. When tasked with designing for the world’s most influential figures, she prioritizes the emotional resonance of the object. “Whenever I design a piece of jewelry, my aim is to capture, as best I can, a feeling the design will evoke in those who wear it,” she explains. She views herself primarily as a designer striving to create beauty, noting that while she provides the form, “the symbolic meaning always resides in the wearer”.

A LEGACY OF UNITY

The inspiration for Hand’s lifelong devotion to American iconography is rooted in a pivotal moment of history. Her sense of patriotism was ignited as a young girl, listening to the radio broadcast of the attack on Pearl Harbor with her parents. This enduring love of her country has fueled a thirty-six-year career dedicated to honoring the nation. Her studio has become a rare neutral

ground in an often-divided landscape. She observes that people of every background, age, and political persuasion are united by a singular desire to wear an eagle or a flag that expresses their love for America. In her studio, the jewelry acts as a bridge. Hand recalls moments where individuals with vastly different views would “smile, reach for the same pin or cufflinks, and share a special bond”. Although the Georgetown salon closed during Covid, the company continues online, where she still designs jewelry for the public and for her private clients through custom commissions. While Ann is honored to have such illustrious clients, it is often the young soldier or sailor searching for the perfect gift for a wife or mother that energizes and inspires her work. As she reflects on the legacy of her work, her hope is that these pieces continue to serve as a catalyst for connection. She aspires for her designs to “continue to celebrate that shared love of country and bring people together, especially in difficult times”. Through her craft, Ann Hand ensures that the spirit of the nation is not just remembered, but worn with pride. ChinyereHubbard:

At the Helm of the DC Chamber of Commerce

A LEADER IN THE MAKING

From her earliest years, Chinyere Hubbard was a leader and a community-builder. Growing up in Northwest DC, she would often organize block parties, produce homemade videos, and write plays for other kids in her neighborhood. At her core, she loved storytelling and connecting people.

“That was something that was always in my DNA,” said Hubbard.

As a teenager, she remembers working at a waffle shop that her father, also a practicing attorney, started in Mount Pleasant. There, too, she loved meeting new people, connecting with the community, and seeing the joy that warm, sweet pancakes and waffles gave families as they lingered over brunch on slow weekend mornings.

“That experience built my work ethic and inspired me to respect business owners, the courage they have, and the sacrifices they make to start and maintain a business,” she said. “It was also inspiring and fulfilling to see the jobs that were created and how much community it built in that neighborhood.”

FROM NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTOR TO DISTRICT-WIDE BUSINESS ADVOCATE

The same instincts that drew Chinyere to local storytelling and community building would shape her entire career and ultimately lead her to become the President and CEO of the DC Chamber of Commerce.

In fact, her initial love of communicating and meeting people led Chinyere to study journalism at Howard University. After graduating, she built a career in journalism and TV broadcasting.

For 15 years, she honed the ability to distill complex issues into stories that engaged and captivated people.

She then made “strategic pivots” to work in public relations, marketing, economic development, and business. That work saw her leading public affairs at the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, where she and her team helped to build Nationals Park. As senior vice president at Events DC, she spearheaded recovery marketing efforts at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, positioning DC as the premier destination for conventions and events after the pandemic. Most recently, she led strategic communications and marketing for the Greater Washington Partnership, an alliance of CEOs and C-suite executives stretching from Baltimore to Richmond, where she gained deep insight into the region’s business ecosystem.

“The storytelling, communicating, and community-building skills I gained during my career prepared me for what I do now— advocating for DC businesses,” she said.

BRINGING OPPORTUNITY TO THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR COMMUNITY

Chinyere stepped into her role representing and advocating for more than 1,000 businesses across DC at a critical time for the local business community.

It was February 2025—the start of a new year and a new administration. Businesses in the city were facing rising operating costs, workforce shortages, lower demand for goods and services due to economic uncertainty, and challenges accessing capital, on top of the ongoing pressures of regulatory compliance.

Undaunted, Chinyere saw the vital role that the DC Chamber could play in creating a vibrant, thriving economy in the District.

“There are challenges, but also opportunities, to ensure that DC businesses have access to the resources they need to grow and even improve their competitiveness during this time,” she said.

Hubbard has tirelessly approached her work from multiple angles: advocating for business-friendly policies, convening entrepreneurs and civic leaders, expanding workforce development partnerships, and helping businesses access the tools and training they need to remain competitive in a rapidly changing economy.

Through events like the DC Chamber’s Small Business Summit and Showcase, she creates spaces where entrepreneurs, industry experts, and local leaders can exchange ideas and build relationships. Behind the scenes, she collaborates with universities, government agencies, and local partners to strengthen talent pipelines and connect residents to emerging opportunities across the region.

A wonderful example of this collaboration is the Talent Capital AI Platform. Launched in partnership

“DC businesses aren’t only the economic engines for our city. They are the heart- beat of our communities.”

with the DC Mayor’s Office, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, the Greater Washington Partnership, and the DC Chamber, it connects job seekers with employers throughout DC, MD, and VA. The platform uses AI-powered tools to offer personalized job matching, career navigation, and training recommendations.

Potentially a powerful win for job seekers and employers seeking qualified talent, it’s just one of many examples of how Chinyere works to connect businesses to continued opportunity.

According to Chinyere, the DC Chamber’s mission is vital, now more than ever. “DC businesses aren’t only the economic engines for our city. They are the heartbeat of our communities.”

From a neighborhood waffle shop in Mount Pleasant to the nexus of DC’s business community, Hubbard continues to serve something essential and hopeful: connection and opportunity for the people who will make the city thrive.

In a moment of uncertainty, her lifelong commitment to building community may be exactly what DC businesses need most.

A Legacy Defined By Impact

Dr. Tauheed unites global leaders and local visionaries for an evening of unmatched elegance and grace.

ARTICLE BY VIVIAN MAMMEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

The District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia region, famously known as the DMV, serves as the epicenter of global influence, housing a concentrated mix of diplomats, executives, and world-class creatives. Yet, despite this wealth of talent, Dr. Tauheed recognized a void in how these leaders were being celebrated. His vision led to the creation of the DMV Awards Gala, a prestigious event designed to acknowledge individuals who have dedicated their lives to empowering and impacting others. Rather than competing, the gala fosters an environment where leaders uplift those who reach back to help the next generation.

Dr. Tauheed’s motivation was twofold: honoring excellence and restoring the elements of fashion, style, and charisma to the capital region. He understood that the younger generation needs to see leaders from fashion, business, politics, and economics converging in one powerful space. This intentionality is what sets the gala apart from traditional spectacles. Dr. Tauheed believes that to create change, one must be intentional about the visibility of that change. By acknowledging accomplishments, the event inspires more people to step up into leadership roles.

As a visionary who naturally thinks outside the box, Dr. Tauheed was willing to make bold moves to address an immediate need. He observed the elegant and powerful environments synonymous with Los Angeles and New York and realized the DMV was missing a similar movement. For him, creating a space where a fashion designer and a CEO are celebrated on the same stage is deeply gratifying. This fusion of diverse cultures and careers is not just about the evening’s festivities; it is an essential component for the future development and long-term success of our local and global communities. This ambitious bet on his vision has already resonated widely, drawing over one thousand guests and twenty

sponsors who stand firmly behind the movement since its initial announcement to the diverse DMV community members who value excellence and human integrity.

The momentum behind the DMV Awards Gala has transformed it from a simple ceremony into a full-scale movement. For the creatives, entrepreneurs, and tastemakers who have yet to experience this atmosphere, Dr. Tauheed promises an environment unlike any other in the region. Those walking through the doors for the first time will find themselves immersed in a high-energy space defined by excitement, growth, and a level of fashion previously unseen in the DC Metropolitan area.

The guest list reads like a manual of regional influence, featuring the “Who’s Who” of the DMV alongside prominent leaders from across the country who have traveled specifically to witness this cultural shift.

The gala’s reach extends far beyond a single night. By engaging dynamic, goal-oriented individuals, the event fosters a culture of excellence that impacts communities well beyond the borders of Maryland and Virginia. It serves as a reminder that when success is connected with purpose, the entire community benefits. This synergy of style and substance is the cornerstone of Dr. Tauheed’s philosophy: that identifying a need and effectively addressing it is the only true path to success.

As the countdown begins for the upcoming celebration on July 18th, 2026, the anticipation continues to build. It is more than an awards show; it is an experience that must be felt in person to be fully understood. Dr. Tauheed’s vision has successfully created a platform where excellence is the standard and impact is the legacy. As the region prepares for this momentous night, one singular question remains at the forefront of everyone’s mind, serving as the official slogan for the movement: “What are you wearing?” The city awaits the dawn of this new fashion era.

Pink Moon is a modern third space designed for movement, play, work, gathering, & celebration.

Nourishing the Earth and Soul

SPIRITUAL FOOD’S MISSION TO HEAL THE PLANET THROUGH BIODYNAMIC, REGENERATIVE ORGANIC AGRICULTURE AND COMMUNITY.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF A NEW FOOD SYSTEM

In an era of industrial agriculture and disconnected supply chains, Spiritual Food CSA stands as a beacon of ecological and spiritual restoration. Founded on the principle that soil is the life-giving skin of our planet, the organization serves as a vital intermediary between conscientious consumers and the dedicated farmers practicing Biodynamic Regenerative Organic agriculture. For Lakshmi (Linette) Landa and the Spiritual Food team, the mission extends far beyond the delivery of fresh produce. It is about a holistic commitment to healing the earth and ourselves through a “spirit of solidarity and service”.

The organization’s roots are deeply tied to the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, who in 1924 warned of the degrading effects of chemical farming. Spiritual Food CSA honors this legacy by promoting Biodynamics, a method that treats the farm as a self-sustaining organism. This approach doesn’t just avoid chemicals; it actively infuses the soil with vitality. As Landa’s work demonstrates, when we support these practices, we aren’t just buying food; we are participating in a “quiet revolution” for peace and environmental stability.

The CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) model employed here is unique. Unlike commercial ventures, Spiritual Food operates as a “truly spiritual moral action”. By paying for a share upfront, members provide farmers with the security needed to invest in seeds and sustainable supplies, effectively removing them from “predatory market forces”. This equitable economic model fosters a deep trust between producer and consumer, creating a “like-minded extended family” that shares in both the risks and the rewards of the season. Spiritual Food CSA takes pride in supporting a number of small, local growers and artisans.

Members of the Spiritual Food community often speak of the transformative power of this connection. The food itself is referred to as “Sattwic,” meaning pure, a reflection of the energetic chain preserved from the healthy soil to the family table. Serving over 100 families across the metropolitan area, the CSA offers high-quality greens, vegetables, fruits, and supplements, including bread, cheese, and

eggs. This balanced, seasonal diet teaches members to eat in harmony with the rhythms of nature, moving away from the “sea of confusion” caused by processed and technologically grown food.

As the organization continues to grow, its focus remains on raising consciousness. Landa and her colleagues believe that the way we do business should be peaceful and sustainable. By choosing to support small regenerative organic and Biodynamic farmers, whom they view as heroes for maintaining harmony with nature, which provides for us all.  The community is actively building a new world based on love and cooperation. This is the essence of Spiritual Food: a commitment to the well-being of the planet, ensuring that “seeds will bring forth plants that are true to their own unique nature” for generations to come.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Reflecting on the history of the movement, Landa highlights that the concept of the CSA was born directly from the Biodynamic movement to remedy the crisis of modern farming. Today, Spiritual Food CSA represents more than a distribution service; it is a platform for social transformation. By prioritizing “Equitable Economics,” they ensure that farming remains a respectable and viable profession for the next generations. The ripple effect of these unified thoughts and actions is what Landa believes will ultimately save our farms, which are currently being lost at an alarming rate throughout the country.

The invitation to join this mission is open to all who desire a simple, healthy lifestyle that honors the wisdom of the body. Whether through volunteering at the main pick-up locations in Bethesda or simply by sharing a seasonal meal, members become part of an “energetic chain” that supports life-enhancing practices. Through the work of Spiritual Food CSA, the act of eating becomes a powerful, daily practice of environmental and spiritual activism.

Get Involved. Support your local ecosystem by joining the 2026 season. Shares are available for Summer, Winter, or the Full Year, with multiple pick-up locations across the D.C. area. Visit spiritualfoodcsa.org to learn more.

SEE THE WORLD THROUGH HER LENS

For Jessica Wallach, a photograph is never just an image. It is an invitation to slow down, look closer, and reconsider what the body knows. Wallach is a disabled artist with cerebral palsy, a photographer with more than twenty-five years of experience, and Content Manager and teaching artist with Story Tapestries. In schools, community spaces, and workforce development programs, she uses photography and tactile visual practices to help people notice, reflect, and make meaning from their lived experience. Her work sits at the intersection of art, disability, and education - approaching the body not as a problem to be solved, but as a place of vitality, adaptation, and discovery.

This month, Wallach graces our cover with an image that asks readers to travel inward: to feel breath, motion, and the energy of everything we carry inside. It is not a travel photograph in the traditional sense. But it does invite a journey - and for those who want to experience her vision firsthand, that journey leads to New York City this July.

Wallach’s work will be featured at Disability Unite Festival 2026 in Central Park, where this year’s theme, A More Accessible Union, asks what it means to build public spaces where all bodies, stories, and ways of moving through the world belong.

For the festival, Wallach is developing a largescale exhibition and participatory art activation rooted in disability history, public space, and the environments our bodies move through today. Participants will encounter artwork, respond to prompts, and add their own pieces to a growing collective installation.

Through Story Tapestries, Wallach has guided more than 1,000 students to explore the world through a lens - teaching people to linger before explaining, and to feel the body as active, alive, and full of story. That same spirit lives in the festival's mission: to celebrate what is possible when community, creativity, and inclusion share the same stage. Showing up in Central Park is a way of saying that this work, and this community, are worth the journey.

Wallach's photography offers something rarea moment of stillness that hums with life. Bodies, she reminds us, are never simple or still. They are always working, always adapting, always arriving somewhere new. Let this July be your reason to arrive somewhere meaningful.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.
