COSMETIC SURGERY

In 2024 PLASTIC SURGEON DENIZ SARHADDI, M.D., ADDRESSES TOP QUESTIONS

“2024 will be the year of looking natural and choosing interventions that make us feel more like ourselves. This means diligent skin care, tasteful injectables, small breast

Cosmetic surgery offers individuals the opportunity to improve their physical appearance, address specific concerns and boost confidence. Chesterfield-based plastic surgeon Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D., with St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, says she believes when people look their best, they feel their best. She’s also an enthusiastic educator, committed to training St. Louis University senior plastic surgery residents in aesthetic surgery. enhancements, weight loss optimizing results from surgical interventions and facial rejuvenation surgery that maintains a natural, cohesive look.”

Deniz Sarhaddi, M.D.

Full-Face Rejuvenation is predicted to be the top trend of 2024. What does this procedure entail? "For a full facial rejuvenation, I recommend my patients start with the most basic part: skin care. An even, bright complexion alone can take years off of any face, and involves consistency with a few key products at home. A full facial rejuvenation can include nonsurgical and surgical interventions (usually a customized combination of the two) to correct signs of aging from the hairline down to the clavicles."

What two main elements should patients consider when deciding with you between surgical or nonsurgical approaches? "The goal and the degree of facial laxity are two of the most important things to consider. The best person to assess when a patient has graduated from nonsurgical maintenance to surgical intervention is a provider who is an expert in both."

What should patients expect at their first plastic surgery consultation? "My patients can expect to sit down with me for about an hour, to review their medical/surgical history and any nonsurgical interventions they have undergone (if it’s a face consult), to have a full exam in front of a mirror where I'll discuss with them what I see, and then we will take time to review options to address their concerns, and I will answer any questions."

How will you use artificial intelligence and 3D imaging during the new year? "I routinely use 3D imaging for breast-related surgeries to 'try on' implants of different sizes and projections. This approach basically always matches up with the preoperative trial with bra sizers, and I find my patients are happy with their final implant size after surgery."

Checkup Time

Advice Editorial: How To Make Sure Physical Bases Are Covered ARTICLE BY DR. BETH TEMPLIN, HOUSEFIT PHYSICAL THERAPY & FITNESS

D R .

B E T H

T E M P L I N ,

PT, DPT, GCS

Every year, most people see their physician for an annual checkup; doctors monitor and manage patients' medical health: blood pressure, weight, medical issues and medications. When patients have an annual checkup with a physical therapist, we focus on physical health: balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, posture and ability to move and do the things they love. Managing both of these health care areas is key to staying healthy and active. Similar to a physician's checkup, a physical therapy checkup identifies issues early, so they can be addressed right away. A physical therapy checkup is recommended for people who're having trouble doing things they enjoy doing: playing with grandchildren, gardening, golfing or traveling. Also, for those having trouble doing things they need to do: getting mail, taking out trash, going up/down stairs, doing laundry or grocery shopping. Checkups are especially for those who aren’t as steady on their feet anymore, and are nervous about having a fall. If we uncover major issues during checkups, we may recommend physical therapy. If only minor issues are identified, then we can help patients update their fitness routines. Dr. Beth Templin, PT, DPT, GCS, is a leading geriatric physical therapist in St. Louis. 314.939.1377 HouseFitSTL.com

IF LAUGHTER IS BEST MEDICINE, ST. LOUIS HAS WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED ARTICLE BY ROBIN SEATON JEFFERSON

It is said that laughter is the best medicine. These two should know: Victor Hugo lived to be 83; Milton Berle 93. Arguably one of the greatest writers of all time, and author of “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” and “Les Misérables,” Victor Hugo, stated, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” And Milton Berle, affectionately known as "Uncle Miltie" and “Mr. Television,” whose Tuesday night television show was so beloved, it caused store owners to put up signs: "Closed tonight to watch Milton Berle," said, “Laughter is an instant vacation.” Victor's and Milton's careers spanned 60 and 80 years, respectively. And their words on laughter are particularly relevant still for Missourians who face January temperatures between 19 and 30 degrees F. So why not take that “instant vacation” and “drive the winter from [your] face” with a trip to a local comedy club? St. Louis and St. Charles Counties have plenty to offer by way of laughing and even improvising the way through Midwestern storms. Other St. Louis comedy clubs have come and gone over the years, but the St. Louis Funny Bone continues to endure in the St. Louis area as a locals’ favorite. With two locations now at Westport Plaza and the Streets of St. Charles, the traditional comedy clubs harken back to the days of modern American stand-up comedy, when entertainers became major

“Skin care always seemed like an unaffordable luxury, and over time, it’s been easy to forget to take care of our faces, until now.” Fizz Facial Bar St. Louis is conveniently located in Chesterfield at 162 THF Blvd. Local franchise owner and Chesterfield resident Jennifer Ayeni says services start with varied facials addressing numerous concerns, including acne and anti-aging, plus bar add-ons such as LED light therapy, firming treatments, cryo cooling or heated facial massage, extractions, lips exfoliation and procedures to de-puff eye areas or soften lines. "In the past, I struggled with my own skin care routine, and sought a more proactive, healthy approach. When I learned about the Fizz Facial concept, which includes a variety of skin care product lines and customized approaches from licensed estheticians, I knew I'd discovered a very helpful, affordable solution," recalls Jennifer, who opened her facial bar during last November. She says many, like herself, thought skin care was a luxury that wasn't economical, until now. This new facial service studio offers express treatments designed to be effective and active with no downtime, with clients in and out within about 30 minutes, Jennifer states. "Our private room facials are approximately 45-55 minutes, and they include

extractions and hand or arm massage. Dermaplaning, spa, acne and anti-aging facials in private room sessions include the neck and chest," explains Jennifer. The majority of add-on services also can be scheduled with private room sessions, as well. "I really love the social part of this, too, at Fizz, it's where skin care meets social hour," says Jennifer, who emphasizes her bar's 'Bubble Lounge' is bookable for six or more guests to treat themselves to facial services, a complimentary beverage, outside food, gift giving, TV setup, a disco ball and fun times for milestone events, or just a place to chillax. Fizz Facial Bar St. Louis offers a monthly membership with perks, such as one free bar session each month and 10% off all services. In January, Jennifer says they will feature their hot chocolate facial, as well as be preparing for their 'Valentine's Facial For Two.' "For those seeking creative and useful gifts for special occasions, we have gift cards that can be setup for customized amounts," she reminds. 314.924.3499 FizzFacialBar.com/location/St-Louis-MO

Catholic Church and even the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City. "I'll never tire of telling the story of how people have shown up for me. Nor will I tire of hearing from others about the ones who did the same for them," says John, who was given a 1% chance of survival after a match and gas-related accident. As John is fond of stating: "Remember, life will never be perfect this side of eternity. But it is good. The foundation is firm. And the best is yet to come." Starring as adult John O’Leary is Joel Courtney. William H. Macy plays sportscaster Jack Buck. John Corbett portrays John's father, Dennis. His mother, Susan O’Leary, is played by Stephanie Szostak. Playing his wife, Beth O’Leary, is Masey McLain. DeVon Franklin is Nurse Roy. "A little boy was burned on his entire body today. Probably isn't going to make it," sports announcer Jack Buck heard 36 years ago. What Jack did beyond that point is inspirational beyond belief. Catch the movie to find out!

At least one Chesterfield location will be prominent in a movie filmed in St. Louis, powered by a local man's lifeover-death trauma, talented teams and regional services. On Fire shares an inspirational, true story of Webster Groves resident John O'Leary, who suffered near-fatal burns when he was 9 years old. The movie's slated for public release during November 2024. A scene filmed in front of EdgeWild Restaurant & Winery was destined to reframe the eatery as a Colorado boutique hotel. The film's executive producer, Terry Schnuck, says beautiful mountains will be green-screened in back of EdgeWild. The Chesterfield Mall vicinity was among five weeks of filming and 12 weeks of post-production for this creative project. Filming also took place at John's former favorite spots, including his parents’ home in Town & Country, Saratoga Lanes in Maplewood, Manchester, Busch Stadium, St. Louis University, Shrine of St. Joseph

SMART SWEETS Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN January is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Q U I N OA B R E A K FA S T B A R S This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit...simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

38

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

• • • •

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins or raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite. 1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning. CONTINUED >

Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist. .
