Love Local

February 2023 PUBLISHER S

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we wanted to use this edition to show our love and gratitude for all things local. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate the day, or the month, we hope these pages will help you do just that as we highlight what’s to love in our community. “Love local” means local businesses, but it also means loving what is most near and dear to your heart…your family and friends. So, grab them and go visit an art gallery, eat at a locally owned restaurant, shop a favorite boutique, visit museums, enjoy a local coffee shop or cafe, buy local libations, or staycation at a boutique hotel in the area. For a romantic day or night, we offer some great suggestions and one of them is to get calm, restored and relaxed on page 44. And some creative gift ideas from Cynthia Richard on page 20 and Emily Stahl Designs page 32. There are always people in our local community that inspire and encourage us. Our hope is that the people and places in this magazine inspire you to love your community and those in it just a bit more than you did before. We sure appreciate all our readers and wish you all a Happy February! With love from our home to yours,

COMMANDING PRESENCE WITHOUT TRYING THROUGH LEGACY OF FASHION SPANNING FIVE GENERATIONS

20

FASH ION F OR WA R D | SHOPPI NG

The French fashion designer, Christian Louboutin, whose shiny, high-end stiletto footwear has made him famous, said: “A shoe has much more to offer than just to walk.” Don’t they know it. Fashion has been a culture, a legacy in the Gelber family since the 19th century. Designer Rick Gelber’s maternal great-grandfather owned a dress manufacturing company on Washington Avenue in St. Louis. His paternal great-grandfather operated Gelber’s Men’s Clothing here. Today, Rick and his wife, Cynthia Gelber, own and operate Cynthia Richard, a luxury shoe brand that espouses the belief that true confidence is found within and will always speak louder than the latest trend. Rick spent most of his own fashion career traveling through Europe, Asia and Brazil as a designer, creative director and general manager for Caleres, Inc. (formerly Brown Shoe Co founded in 1875 in St. Louis). He introduced the Carlos by Carlos Santana shoe brand over a decade ago at Caleres. “We grew up wearing the samples that the department stores didn’t take,” says the

Gelbers' daughter, Megan Perry, who marveled at her father’s designs for years. “They took the safe shoes. My sisters and I disagreed with what the department stores picked and thought even then that we should have a family line. Kids at school would say, ‘Where did you get those?’ They called us the ‘Gelber Girls with The Best Shoes.’ We learned to build our outfits from the shoes up. My dad would design these amazing shoes, and we weren’t able to tell people where they could get them.” But it was Cynthia who ultimately encouraged the newest Gelber family business. “She’s always the best-dressed person in the room,” Megan says of her mom. For years, Cynthia wanted to work with her husband. She started the Cynthia Richard LLC in 2012, but didn’t use it until she and Rick came up with what they believed would be the perfect family business for them. Now, the whole family is involved, except for the Gelbers’ son, who owns his own business selling exotic Ferraris and Lamborghinis. “We know that what you put on changes the way you feel about yourself,” Rick says. “That is why we have taken the time to create a collection that will help build your own spirit. Fashion is a process of truly discovering who you are and what makes you feel alive.” And like the five generations of their family before them, Rick and Cynthia, along with their three daughters, want to help their clientele find shoes that will make getting ready easy, effortless and exciting. They want to share their shoe collection that they say “is designed with your story at the center.” At Cynthia Richard, Rick says the family embraces certain “style truths” that they stand by. “Confidence is sexy,” Rick says. In other

words, fashion is an expression of who you are and how you feel about yourself. He says Cynthia Richard shoes are modern affordable luxury, made in Italy and Brazil. The Gelbers’ designs “command presence in the room without trying,” Rick says. “True style never tries too hard. It’s a differential factor from our competition. Cynthia Richard offers bold styles with unexpected embellishments.” But he hasn’t gotten away from the truth that his family, past and present, has been the driving force in his success. “We aim to be the top affordable luxury shoe brand recognized worldwide for elegant high-quality shoes that reflect personality and allow customers to feel they are wearing a unique extension of themselves. We aspire to develop relationships with our clients inviting them to be part of our life that embraces luxury fashion while staying deeply rooted in our love for family and authentic living,” he says. Rick says at the end of the day, his family’s brand is built around the notion that “The things you are passionate about are not random. They are your calling. And rules are meant to be broken. You don't have to settle for the status quo. First, demand more. Second, go out and get it.” CynthiaRichard.com CONTINUED >

Think High-End Luxury Gone Bohemian Tess & tomy Jewelry Creator Offers Classic Chic And Bold Boho ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY PIERCE

Pearls are for wearing to the beach and for making big statements each and every day, declares a local fashionista. Karen Daniels, creator of the Tess & tomy jewelry collection, says she draws upon her experiences of growing up on an Illinois farm, along with unique traveling encounters as an adult, to develop her own style of outdoor fashion. The University City resident develops one-of-a-kind pieces infused with a certain Boho spirit.

"I'm known for starting with pearls, including colored ones, like copper and peacock. And I'm a huge accessories person. Anything's 'in' as long as you love it," she says. Tess & tomy pieces are comprised of fresh-water pearls, wrapped in suede and knotted into lavish strands. Karen adds turquoise, carved wooden beads, bone, quartz and other natural ornaments to make each creation as individual as the people wearing them. Some of her stone necklaces also feature minerals, such as sapphires, garnet, labradorite and glass beads. CONTINUED >

“The original Tess Jewelry necklace is a stunning pearl-and-suede combination that I called ‘the basic.’ Each pearl of the 47-inch piece is wrapped in suede and knotted into one long strand,” Karen Daniels says. “Sometimes I think of my jewelry as Chanel meets Ralph Lauren.”

"Layering strand after strand, dressing yourself in elegant pearls, each design can be worn in various ways. Although intended as necklaces, they also look beautiful on your wrist," she suggests. Locally, Karen's designs can be purchased at Mary Tuttle's in Chesterfield and at Hearth & Soul off Clayton Road. Her jewelry also is sold in New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Florida, Texas, New Hampshire, Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Wyoming. Among her products are chokers, anklets, headbands, rings, necklaces, leather do-rags, upcycled Levi denim jackets, leather clutches and lots of pearl pieces. "Pearls represent purity, generosity, integrity and loyalty of those who wear them," says Karen.

KAREN'S INSPIRED BACKGROUND After 20 years of working in fashion retail management for The Limited and then Vie Boutique in Ladue, Karen retired. However, realizing that she was still inspired by natural fibers and gemstones, she says she was personally moved to develop jewelry. Nearly a decade ago, she created and sold pieces under the business of Tess Jewelry, named after her grown daughter. "The original Tess Jewelry necklace is a stunning pearl-and-suede combination that I called 'the basic.' Each pearl of the 47-inch piece is wrapped in suede and knotted into one long strand," she says. "Sometimes I think of my jewelry as Chanel meets Ralph Lauren."

28

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE

During the recent COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Karen's son, Tommy, had just graduated from Washington University. He assisted her with a myriad of marketing components during that period; that's when she decided to add to the collection's name to include his influence as well. Because she says she continues to love layered jewelry looks, she especially enjoys working with vintage Tibetan pieces that she secures from a Tibetan man she met at a market, in addition to elements of sterling silver to craft other lengths of necklaces that are perfect for layering. Karen frequents gem shows throughout the United States, looking for unusual gems and items to weave into her jewelry creations. Last fall, she says she went to London for Fashion Week and was motivated by a vintage vibe. This year, she has a trip planned to Sicily and says she's so eager to find items there with which to work. She says she can't send enough turquoise to Sante Fe, and she's beginning to style with Long Horn-based pendants for Texan markets. For potential Valentine's Day gift ideas, Karen recommends starting with the basic draping of pearls. "Then, the person receiving that type of gift can select other strands to customize their look however they'd like." For anyone with family pearl heirlooms that could use a fresh look, Karen says she happily takes apart and restrings pearls, and can add other stones to them to make them pop with personality. A LABOR OF LOVE EM I LY STA H L DE SIGN CO.’S INSPIRING BACKSTORY

ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN

Meet Emily Stahl, a local graphic designer and lettering artist who is a St. Louis native. Her story is nothing short of amazing. Her work is a true labor of love, which is frequently seen around town. Her creations are beautiful and all stemmed from her passion to help others in the midst of her own life challenges. During a season when love is so celebrated, artists such as Emily, are tremendously inspiring, reminding everyone to pursue what we love and enjoy doing. With so much passion for her craft, Lifestyle inquired about how she started, and how she manages to juggle her job and her side hustle. After being diagnosed in 2016 with a rare neuromuscular disorder called Late Onset Tay Sachs, Emily says she wanted to find ways to get involved. She recalls reaching out to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and they were looking for artists for a fundraiser. With freelance projects under her belt, she says she decided to sell prints for the fundraiser. She carefully designed a few items and sold them at the art show with a percentage going back to the MDA. Since then, she has expanded to cards, stickers, apparel, magnets, mugs, pins, ornaments and more. Emily not only works full time as a senior designer at Williamson Home, but she also runs her design business with custom items available across St. Louis. It doesn’t end there! She also has designs for the St. Louis Blues clothing line at the STL Authentics shop at Enterprise Center.

As young boys, their sons, Mike and Jim, joined them on weekends and in the summer months, learning about jewelry and the culture of a family business. Now, nearly seven decades later, Mike and Jim continue the family business, with 80 years of experience between them. "My first memories of the business as a boy come from us having mountings and loose diamonds that had to be set. I was paid 25 cents a diamond for any I found on the floor. That was quite a motivator in the 1960s," Jim recalls. He says Lordo’s team members are intentionally non-commissioned. "Instead, we put the focus

where it should be, which is ensuring each and every purchase best matches the customer’s dreams," he adds. With 23 grades of color and 11 grades of clarity, Jim says selecting the right diamond can sometimes feel overwhelming. "Our professional staff will help you understand the basics behind the four C’s — cut, clarity, color and carat weight," he adds. Additionally, the store has 500-plus diamond ring mountings to offer. Pinterest has become influential in their business, enabling the Lordo's team to help customers be heroes. "Seven out of 10 guys come in with Pinterest images regarding what their ladies desire. I look at Pinterest myself and try to stock according to trends. But if we don't have it, we can create it, as long as we have a picture," Jim says. Whether to commemorate or to celebrate, Mike says the store's team understands each gift of jewelry is special, meant to convey appreciation and love. "We strive to provide every customer a jewelry store experience wrapped in that sentiment as well." Located in Ladue at 9222 Clayton Road, the store carries engagement rings, wedding bands, watches and fashion jewelry. Mike says the in-house jewelry repair is full service: cleaning, ring sizing, prongs retipped, setting stones, watch batteries, broken clasps or restringing pearls. "Our jewelers specialize in cleaning, repairing and restoring antique jewelry." As a complimentary service to Lordo's customers, Jim says they professionally clean and polish fine jewelry purchased there. "Prior to cleaning, our team inspects jewelry for any loose gemstones or other potential problems," he adds. Appraisals for fine jewelry also are available for estate, insurance or tax purposes, with the expertise of GIA diamond graduates and Accredited Jewelry Professionals to provide extra assurance. Jim says the store's team maintains a copy of complete appraisals in their records for future reference and updates. Award-winning designer fashion jewelry collections offered at Lordo's are Cherie Dori, David Kord, Fana, Kattan Diamonds & Jewelry, S. Kashi, Stuller, Supreme, Vahan and Vikens. 314.432.8008 LordosDiamonds.com

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

What Spouse Date Was Most Memorable? Or Will Be? ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Chesterfield Area Couples Reflect On Magical Moments From Their Relationships

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

IDEAS FOR MAKING MEMORABLE DATES:

DANA AND MICHAEL TIPPIT 1. Do a color run together.

“When we had a toddler and after watching Barney, the purple dinosaur, and his friends for 18 months, we finally went to see the rom-com movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin. We ate at Rally Burger after essentially eating nothing outside of our home for those months; that was the best burger we’d had in a such long time, and we laughed so hard during the movie. We realized we really needed to get out and take a break from preschool stuff for a while.”

2. Visit the local antique mall and seek out the wackiest purchases that can be found. 3. Have an at-home camping adventure, complete with a blanket-fort-turned-tent in the living room. 4. Hop in a vehicle with a good playlist, with no set destination.

SCOTT AND MARCY WATSON 5. Dig up boxes of old family photos and spend a night swapping memories and childhood pictures.

“When we were in college, Marcy accidentally ruined my favorite shirt with a red magic marker. She wanted to make it up to me, so we agreed to play racquetball, and she kicked my behind. Despite that start, we went out on a real date after that. And there was always something about her that made me want to be with her. We’ll have been married 43 years this February.”

6. When going on a dinner date, arrive separately and ‘meet’ each other there to create a little romantic anticipation. 7. Go for a hot air balloon ride. 8. Spend an hour dreaming up the wildest date ideas possible, then print them onto paper strips to be randomly drawn from a date jar next time to decide how to spend a night out.

GET C A LM, SER ENE , R ESTOR ED AQUARIUS WELLNESS CENTER HEALING ARTS AND MASSAGE THERAPY TEAM AWAITS TO PROVIDE CARING, COZY TREATMENTS

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Holistic wellness is clearly the mission at Aquarius Wellness Center for Healing Arts and Massage Therapy in Richmond Heights at 7750 Clayton Road, Suites 103/104. The center's founder, Andrew Goodman, has spent his career as a massage therapist in service to others, helping one person at a time with their individual wellness journeys. "There's an amazing sense of instant gratification working with massage clients over the years,” says Andrew, “as they walk in with various aches and pains, and walk out an hour or two later feeling transformed, with the weight of the world removed from their shoulders. This is why I consider the butterfly, depicted on original artwork throughout the spa, to be our spirit animal at Aquarius, where our clients crawl in, metaphorically, as caterpillars, and float out as butterflies." He says his first massage training occurred in 1984 at a pioneering yoga instructor’s home in St. Louis, about a decade before the massage industry began to experience a renaissance in the United States. After traveling the world to study yoga in India during 1990, but then seeing how 'masseurs-kinésithérapeutes' in France handled historically-effective massage techniques, he says the seed of a vision began to take form in his imagination. "It was a vision that ultimately culminated in my life’s work, or ‘Path with a Heart,’ as I like to describe it, one that has organically grown over years of loving nurturance into the resplendent flower that is Aquarius Wellness," recalls Andrew. Andrew remembers especially being enthralled with The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in Greece. The amphitheater was just one part of an immense healing complex known as an Aesclepieion, and the sanctuary there is dedicated to the ancient Greek God of medicine, Asclepius. According to Pausanias, the theatre was constructed at the end of the 4th century BC, and is widely known for its symmetry, beauty and exceptional acoustics. "I was struck by how classical plays, healing temple caves and dream interpretations were important parts of holistic therapy 2,000 years ago, and these complexes, where the father of western medicine, Hippocrates, studied medicine, were set all throughout ancient Greece," he says. "The remains of which alone are stunning to behold. It made me want to deliver on promises for spectacular, memorable spa experiences that much more." By 2012, Andrew rented 548-square-feet of space within a commercial, centrally located, yet dated and dilapidated building built in St. Louis during the 1960s. "We transformed the space into modern standards. But, one renovation step leads to the next, and it took us a year and a half to open," he adds.

“We transformed the space in a neglected building into a homey, cozy spa environment, the likes of which a New Yorker, and the director of Hamilton (who came in three times, sending six of his cast and crew when they were in town at the Fox), said they have never seen before, anywhere," Andrew says. He says they focused on avoiding many of his pet peeves from working in the industry for 25 years, such as having the proper temperature, the right lighting, an enriched ambiance through amazing music, real artwork and international, rustic decor, and finally, noise mitigation. Then the building was purchased about four years ago by a major real-estate group and underwent a $6 million renovation, which was the icing on the cake for Aquarius, quips Andrew. In January 2022, in honor of his mother, Harriet, who passed on, Andrew added another 270 square feet of space to the center to provide

three treatment rooms, two couples' suites and one single suite. Jim Croghan, the center's vice president of operations, says they completely redesigned their website and opened an online store during their 15-month COVID19 closure, partially curated based on his hospitality background working with five-star hotel and spa brands, both domestically and internationally spanning 25 years. "One option that's really popular this time of year is our Valentine's Day Pamper Me package, which includes an Aquarius Wellness Signature Massage and Signature Facial, both for 60 minutes each, plus a glass of champagne and chocolates to complement your experience," Jim explains. He says the add-on options to the base treatments of massages, facials, alternative healing practices and waxing also are sought after: offerings such as dermaplaning, LED light therapy, oxygen renewal skincare, diamond microdermabrasion, lash lifts and microcurrent treatment. "For those prioritizing wellness in their lives, we have several membership levels as well," he adds. A new offering for 2023, Jim says, is their 'Share the Care' Referral Program through which people can receive $25 off their next spa treatment by referring a new client. He adds that accumulating five referrals results in receiving a complimentary service. They also provide 15%-off cards for first-time clients. Getting out a crystal ball, Andrew says he eventually would like to grow Aquarius into multiple urban locations nationally, as well as several comprehensive, Integrated Wellness Centers distributed around the country on acreage in nature, that feature gardens, livestock, farm-to-table cuisine, wellness workshops and yoga/meditation classes. He says guests could go for a service, or stay for a day, a week or a month for a complete mind/body/spirit reset. Additionally, Aquarius Wellness clients take great satisfaction in knowing that for each product or

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET 5 WAYS TO O R G A N I Z E A N D

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our five tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

03 04 05 NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

UPGR ADED HA NGERS

The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

Ozark Old Fashioned WHILE STOWLOCH WHISKEY IS INCREDIBLE BY ITSELF, SOMETIMES ONE JUST HAS TO MIX IT UP The source water for amazing Stowloch Whiskey is deep within America’s Ozark Highlands, purified and softened by the limestone that makes the Ozark Highlands one of only nine true highland regions in the world. Stowloch is made using an imported recipe brought to the Americas by the distiller’s family in 1761. “We use only heirloom, non-GMO grain and long fermentation to give this Ozark Highlands whiskey a pre-prohibition style that’s sure to satisfy any palate,” says Mark Sutherland, CEO of Stone Ledge Spirits Company. “Since we use no rye in our mash, you’ll find a hint of sweet in every sip. This sustainable, all-natural whiskey captures the essence of the 200-year history of Ozark Highlands distilling, and is sure to become one of your favorite drams.”
