LIFESTYLE LETTER

Inspiring Women Our May issue is dedicated to all women especially those in our lives and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in oneself and at the same time being able to see the beauty, greatness and talent in other women around them. Women inspiring women, empowering and encouraging each other to succeed is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to inspire those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. In this month’s issue, we are sharing amazing stories of inspiring women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs, women who are finding ways to give back to our community and businesses that help women. Let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. We also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to thank them for their impact on your life. Happy Mother's Day,

Clothes Update WARDROBE CONSULTANT ‘CB STYLE BY DESIGN’ CAN LEAD THE WAY TO MORE FASHIONABLE OUTFIT OPTIONS

Thinning and fine-tuning a closet full of clothes acquired over many years can seem like an overwhelming task, however, fashion stylist/wardrobe consultant Carol Burcke makes the one-on-one evaluation an enjoyable exercise of self-discovery and style. As owner of cb Style by Design, Carol says her goal is to help clients look and feel their best. "Clothes should show, or emphasize, on the outside the inner beauty that people have. There's an important emotional element to fashion. I know from experience when you look good, you feel good, and who doesn’t want to feel good? I also understand the importance of style and how the right outfit has the power to transform someone’s level of confidence," says Carol, who has a degree in fashion merchandising. She admits that when she sees women come out of public dressing rooms with defeated looks, she wants to run over and help teach them how to find outfits that are personally fabulous for them. Carol says industry statistics reveal that women, on average, spend $2,000 per year on clothes, shoes and accessories. "However, most women only wear 20% of all that for 80% of the time. My joy comes from saving money, time and stress for others by helping them understand

why they look good in certain clothes, so when they're shopping they know exactly what to look for," she adds. Her services include: • Conducting online assessments and creating personalized style guides, based on clients' body types, skin tones, needs and budgets. Carol says she's currently helping women determine what to wear while returning to company offices, especially new thoughts about the definitions of business casual. • Providing closet edits during which outfits are created from clients' current wardrobes, followed by determining what pieces no longer work and making lists of items needed to create a completed wardrobe. Carol even takes pictures of created outfits on clients' phones so they can recreate them without pressure. • Shopping for clients at a variety of retail, resale and vintage shops to add unique pieces into clients' wardrobe. Carol says she and clients are mindful of the environment by finding new applications for existing clothing through eco fashion ideas. By looking at other's wardrobes through a set of fresh eyes, she says she shares advice and attire tricks through her focused approach and step-by-step process. Nearly half of American women struggle with selecting clothes, according to industry research."Over the years, I've assisted many people in choosing outfits that help them tap into their own unique style while providing them tips on how to dress and fit their body type," says Carol. She says many people end up with excess clothing for a variety of reasons: They don't know what looks good on them; they buy the same items but in different colors; they purchase to fill a need for a one-time or infrequent event; they buy the wrong sizes. Carol also offers new, resale and vintage items through her Carol's Closet, an online shop on her website that spans an ever-changing spectrum of designer blouses, purses, dresses, blazers, belts, jeans, leather jackets and trench coats. "The vision is for clients to feel welcome again in their own closets. There's nothing better than seeing someone put on clothes that we've matched and light up when they look in the mirror," Carol assures. CarolBurcke.com

Inspiring Women

ARTICLE BY JUDY PETERS

LBB: WOMEN LEADING WOMEN

The need to learn from other women business owners and form a system of support and education is what led Angel Magasano, of Wentzville, to create a community to meet the needs of female professionals known as Little Black Book: Women in Business (LBB). “As a former corporate professional and budding entrepreneur, I didn’t know what I didn’t know about growing a business, so I began reaching out to other like-minded business owners to share best practices and business growth ideas.” Ten years later, she has grown the Little Black Book organization to more than 360 members spanning eight chapters in both Missouri and Illinois. In 2021, Little Black Book boasts an $85,075 financial impact through community service and philanthropy. The largest charitable contribution has been to the Toys for Tots Foundation, donating 50,000-plus toys over the past several years. Little Black Book recently hosted a highly successful women’s conference entitled “BECOME: Women’s Day of Inspiration,” to commemorate International Women’s Day. New offerings for Little Black Book’s membership in 2022 include a women’s collaborative workspace to open by the end of the year and an exclusive business strategy retreat for six-figure business owners ready to take their business to the next level. Angel says she feels LBB has the perfect balance of women’s empowerment programming and business skills workshops to further women’s personal and professional success. “Little Black Book meets women where they are, and supports them along their journey to becoming the person they aspire to be.” Angel has received numerous awards throughout her career including 2020 Small Business Monthly’s “Top 100 St Louisans to Know to Succeed in Business,” 2019 Western St Charles Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, 2016 “Certificate of Recognition,” issued by the City of Wentzville for services to the City. She currently sits on the board of directors for Vision St Charles County Leadership, and will be installed as a board member for BackStoppers St. Charles County in the spring of 2022.

Shannon Norman has been a member of LBB for about six years but was involved in some of their activities since the organization started. “I’ve been friends with Angel (Magasano) for years, and I have loved getting to know these LBB women who are strong, driven, and forward-looking. By associating with these ladies, I’m always driven to do better, and to build my business to new levels. These are some of the most amazing women in the local area. They’re truly inspiring.” A graduate of St. Louis University School of Law, Shannon also holds bachelor’s degrees in psychology and criminology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. While there, she also earned a certification in trauma studies. Shannon is from south Louisiana and grew up working in her family’s aviation business. Later, while attending college, she worked with international companies bringing products into the states through customs and border protection. This combined experience working with corporate clients and people of varying backgrounds, as well as multiple government agencies, is invaluable to her current law practice, Shannon Norman Law, LLC in St. Peters. She is licensed in both Missouri and her home state of Louisiana. Shannon decided to complete law school in her late 30s, when her kids were in high school. “I should have done it earlier, but life got in the way,” she quips. She knew she was going to eventually open her own firm. In preparation for that, she did a lot of volunteer work as a Rule 13 lawyer for the SLU Legal Clinic, mainly dealing with battered women and abusers. Through that, she was involved in the clemency petition for Judy Henderson, and ended up working on the case for eight years, eventually succeeding in getting Judy released from being wrongly imprisoned for 36 years for a murder she did not commit. “We are now close friends and she’s doing wonderfully,” says Shannon. “It’s kind of hard to top that in your career,” she concludes. Shannon spends a lot of time in court, because her practice mainly focuses on family, criminal, and personal injury law. But she does find time to volunteer with LBB and with the Cottleville Firefighters Outreach. She is a past board member of the Center for Autism Education, and also travels as a national competitive ballroom dancer. For the last several years, Shannon has been named as a Rising Star Super Lawyer, which represents only about 2% of lawyers in the Missouri/Kansas region, selected by peers.

Yolonda Lankford recently had the honor of emceeing LBB’s BECOME Women’s Conference. She says what she loves most about LBB is that they connect women that have resources to share and truly support each other. “As emcee for BECOME, it was just beautiful to look out at a sea of faces that were ready to receive positive information.” Which perfectly fits Yolonda’s personal mission of “sending out vibrant vibes and positivity.” She says her life theme is to uplift and empower girls and women. One of the ways she fulfills that is by co-hosting a TV show three times/week called “The Own Your Now Show,” airing on the Ah! TV network. It’s described as a Morning Wellness Talk Show, birthed in the midst of the pandemic, to be a space focusing on everyday positivity. She is also the project manager for a nonprofit organization called SistaKeeper (idefinememovement. com). Founded in 2002, it was developed to empower, inspire and develop the mind, body and spirit of young women into women with a purpose. “I get the joy of helping young girls reach their potential…and showing them what it looks like to have a life/career that you love.” Yolonda has been involved in many charities throughout her 28 years in the St. Louis area (she’s originally from California). As a volunteer, she helped develop Cardinal Care, then was hired as the executive director of Kwame Foundation (KwameFoundation.org) which provides a platform that highlights talented public school students who are passionate about the visual and performing arts and provides financial assistance, educational mentorships, internship opportunities, and career training. Recently, she served as emcee and co-chair for the St. Jude Gala, raising $1.6 million. She has received an Oprah Winfrey Angel Award for spearheading an Oprah Angel House in St. Louis. “I’ve always loved using my God-given talents to help nonprofits. My kids call me the community connector,” she quips. Other well-deserved recognition includes being voted one of St. Louis’s Most Magnetic Personalities by St. Louis Magazine, and she is the recipient of the National Council of Negro Women Legacy Award. Yolonda is engaged to Hall of Famer, Ozzie Smith. She will soon have a blended family with seven children (two biological children, three of her fiance’s, and two of his sister’s children who they’ve been raising since she passed away). “When the opportunity at Sono Bello became available, I knew it was the perfect fit. They continue to improve and grow, and I’m so proud to be a part of it”

Flat, tight tummies in just one visit are possible through a local team of body-contouring leaders; such a possibility prompts hope in many. AbEX -- an innovative, breakthrough technique developed by Sono Bello -- combines the center’s signature TriSculpt micro-laser liposuction with excess skin removal in the full abdomen to provide a more comprehensive approach to fat removal than a traditional tummy tuck. “While a tummy tuck is done under general anesthesia, AbEX is done under localized anesthesia, which results in fewer complications, less downtime, and faster patient recovery as we completely avoid the risk associated with general anesthesia,” says Gerald Lionelli, M.D. Located at 845 N. New Ballas Court, Suite 360, in Creve Coeur, the St. Louis Sono Bello 18-member team is part of 70-plus locations nationally. Sono Bello was founded in 2008. The company’s 135-plus, board-certified surgeons have performed more than 250,000 procedures to date. Overall, Sono Bello services include targeted area body contouring, mommy makeovers, tummy-tuck alternatives, excess skin removal, chest/gynecomastia reduction and double chin reduction. Stephanie Naar, Sono Bello senior patient care consultant, says she’s always been interested in the aesthetics field. “When the opportunity at Sono Bello became available, I knew it was the perfect fit. They continue to improve and grow, and I’m so proud to be a part of it,” she adds. As a patient care consultant, Stephanie says she appreciates having the ability to change lives by supporting patients and their transformation body goals. “On a personal level, I love the challenge my job brings every day,” she says. “I consider many of my patients my friends, so when I see them after their procedures, it excites me to see their amazing results. It really is like cheering on your best friend.” Lifestyle publisher Kelley Lamm Montgomery plans to have skin removed from five, prior emergency surgeries that she says left her hating her stomach. “It’s something after all these years to transform my belly. I’d like to feel better in my skin and in my clothes,” she says. “I’m doing this for myself, something that makes me feel like me again. Age and surgeries can play a wicked game on the body. No matter what I do, what I eat, I cannot change the appearance.” Kelley encourages women to not feel guilty about wanting to have the opportunity for better body-related results. CONTINUED >

Amy Shaw was an inaugural Eisenhower Zhi-Xing Fellow in 2015, spending a month in China studying Chinese media and how communities address complex issues.

Vital Role Of Public Media NINE PBS LEADER AMY SHAW PROCLAIMS STATION IS LOCAL TREASURE AS ONE OF STRONGEST PUBLIC MEDIA ORGANIZATIONS IN USA

When Amy Shaw became president/CEO of Nine PBS in February 2020, she also became the first woman to lead the organization in its 68-year history. This St. Louis native believes being a woman was an asset to leading and focusing the station through the COVID-19 pandemic. "The collision of our work and home lives, fear and chaos of the unknowns, and need to be kinder and more understanding requires a different leadership style than has been valued in the past," she explains. Amy's deeply committed to the power and strength of public media. "As a public media institution that serves our St. Louis region, we’re more essential than ever in connecting our community through stories that move us. We can go deeper on issues

that impact all of us. In particular, our role in education has never been more important," she assures. "In the pandemic, we’ve gone back to our roots of teaching on TV. So many children don’t have reliable broadband connections and our classes on TV are free, readily available, and taught by trusted local teachers. This is why being a local public media institution matters. We listen to what’s important from people that impact issues and the people impacted, and act accordingly." Recognized as a national leader and innovator in community engagement and public media, Amy leads a talented team in groundbreaking work that leverages on-air, online and community engagement for measurable impact around important, complex issues. While local programming remains the focus, Amy admits the path forward is unclear in many ways, due to technology changes and the shift to access more content on more platforms than before. "What's clear, though, is our lens is squarely focused on telling local stories and doing work that impacts our region," she says. Amy also has led numerous national content initiatives that have created durable change in local communities, including Facing the Mortgage Crisis, public media’s response to the national financial crisis and the national/local American Graduate initiative to rally communities to improve outcomes for youth. She oversaw the

creation of a Community Engagement Guidebook designed to help public media organizations deepen their commitment as relevant and essential community institutions. She currently serves on the PBS board, the Public Television Major Market Group board, is chair of the FOCUS St. Louis board, chair of the Webster University School of Communications Advisory Board, and serves on the Grand Center, Inc. board. She's a member of the St. Louis Forum, the International Women’s Forum, and is a graduate of the 2012-13 class of Leadership St. Louis. In 2021, she was named by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of 25 Most Influential Business Women in the St. Louis region. Under her leadership, Nine PBS was recognized in 2020 by the Women’s Foundation of Greater St. Louis as one of the region’s best places to work for women. Nine PBS is located in the Grand Center Arts District at 3655 Olive St. Half of Nine PBS’s funding comes from local viewers, supplemented with community grant funding. "We're also entrepreneurial and do work-for-hire that accounts for about 11% of our funding. In most years, just 11% of our support comes from government sources. We’re driven by a sole purpose to bring about a stronger St. Louis region. Local matters," Amy asserts.

Get Away to the Mile High City Where the Mountains and Metropolitan Lifestyle Vibrantly Coincide

Visit Denver When you think about Denver, what immediately may come to mind is the gateway to the stunning landscape of mountain peaks with an abundance of recreational activities. But what you might not realize is just how unbelievable the urban experience is in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Denver to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this mile-high destination. With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events to check out, pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few. As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked.

Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet—blending urban charm and industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience.
