DO YOU HEAR THAT? It’s the sound of nature springing to life after a long winter’s nap. Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and children are playing outside as the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer. This month at Chesterfield Lifestyle, we bring you our Eco issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Inspired by the infinite beauty of the earth—and our desire to preserve and protect it—we compiled an array of eco-conscious and eco-friendly people and places making a difference right here in Chesterfield and our surrounding communities. This issue is a celebration of all things Mother Nature. Throughout these pages, you’ll find simple ways to be more eco-friendly, from walking or cycling instead of driving to buying eco-conscious clothing and accessories. Whether or not you have a green thumb, we hope the stories in these pages invoke feelings of gratitude for the wonderful world we live in—and the wonderful people in our community who strive to sustain it.
CORPORATE TEAM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Steven Schowengerdt CHIEF SALES OFFICER Matthew Perry
Not sure where to start? When you’ve finished enjoying this issue, we encourage you to recycle it so it can be turned into future magazines. After all, that’s what makes the world go ‘round! Happy spring, Chesterfield!

AUSTRALIAN-BORN PETER ALLEN WAS A MUSICIAN AND ENTERTAINER KNOWN FOR HIS FLAMBOYANT STAGE PERSONA AND LAVISH COSTUMES. His musical creativity also was embraced by other artists. To get peeks at unique aspects of Allen's story, check out The Boy from Oz, a production presented by Stages St. Louis from May 31 through June 30 at the Robert G. Reim Theatre, 111 S. Geyer Road in Kirkwood. It's the Midwest premiere and rare North American production of the Australian hit. It's been called a showbiz celebration of life, love and being fabulous!

Dazzling and hilarious as the legendary Peter Allen himself, Stages' representatives indicate this production follows the Australian singer-songwriter from his humble beginnings performing in back-country pubs to his international stardom beside Hollywood icons. For instance, he and Liza Minnelli divorced after seven years of marriage. Allen's first solo gig was opening for Bette Midler at the Bitter End nightclub in Greenwich Village in 1970. Allen's songs were made popular by recording artists such as Frank Sinatra, Bobby
Sherman,
Anne
Murray,
Dionne
Warwick, Carly Simon, Patti LaBelle, Melissa Manchester, Bernadette Peters and Olivia Newton-John. His song "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" sung by American singer Christopher Cross, won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1981. In addition to recording albums, he enjoyed a cabaret and concert career, including appearing at the Radio City Music Hall riding a camel. His patriotism song "I Still Call Australia Home" was used extensively in advertising campaigns and was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry in 2013. Several years after Allen's death in 1992, The Boy from Oz musical documentary was written about his life. It ran on Broadway and earned Hugh Jackman a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Hugh led the show on tour in Australia. Tickets to this production range from $25 to $65 each and can be ordered from StagesStLouis.org. The Chesterfield Box Office is located at 1023 Chesterfield Parkway East.

AREGIVERS OF ONE LOCAL COMPASSIONATE COMPANY UNDERSTAND HOW BENEFICIAL IT IS TO DELIVER THESE HUMAN KINDNESS COMPONENTS TO CLIENTS, ALONG WITH HEALTHCARE-RELATED HOME SERVICES. Aging people simply do better longer when they’re able to stay in
their own homes, around familiar surroundings and uplifting cues, asserts Fred Henry, owner of Comfort Keeper of Greater St. Louis and surrounding counties.
“Caregivers are called that for a reason. They truly care. Ours are excellent eyes and ears in the field who provide invaluable updates regarding each client,” Fred says. Comfort Keepers provides care services for a variety of in-home needs: 24/7 monitoring, dementia, respite or relief breaks, residency transitioning periods and end-of-life support. Fred says their caregivers come from a range of health care backgrounds, such as certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses and nursing school students. Additionally, they complete Comfort Keepers’ customized, interactive caregiver training. Caregivers also can help clients carry out activities of daily living, such as getting dressed, preparing meals, pet care, shopping, managing medications, laundry, playing cards, handling mail, using communication devices, light housekeeping and transportation to lunch with friends or medical appointments. “We focus on looking for and finding joy every day,” explains Fred, who says they do their best to match clients with caregivers who share similar hobbies and interests. Comfort Keepers executes services through its “Ten Point Promises” to: 1. Offer cost-effective, personalized quality of care to meet each person’s individual needs. 2. Foster independence for each person. 3. Treat each person with dignity and respect. 4. Promote the individuality of each person. 5. Respect and promote each person’s choice of care and lifestyle. 6. Protect each person’s right to privacy. 7. Nurture the spirit of each person. 8. Involve family and friends in care planning and implementation. 9. Help provide a safe, secure environment for each person. 10. Be courteous, fair and prompt in all dealings with customers. CONTINUED >

“We maintain high standards of professionalism in management and customer relations,” Fred says. As a former banker and financial consulting professional for more than 30 years, Fred was inspired to examine the services of Comfort Keepers when he witnessed the driving and companionship services that a Comfort Keepers employee in Memphis, Tenn., provided to his uncle, who was in mid-stage Alzheimer’s. He says he learned that Comfort Keepers was launched by a nurse nearly 20 years ago after she saw how many hospital patients had to return home before they were completely ready to take care of themselves. “When I learned the St. Louis Comfort Keepers territory was available six years ago, I committed to it and it’s been one of the most rewarding, satisfying things I’ve ever done in my life. We look at it as trying to elevate the human spirit,” Fred says. To secure Comfort Keepers’ services, a no-cost, in-home assessment is completed before developing a Plan of Care. The plan includes setting a schedule of medications and activities as well as who the decisionmaker(s) will be. Since many family members of Comfort Keepers’ clients live out of town, Fred says approved members can access confidential daily updates via online access in what’s called “The Family Room.” That online log provides a photo of the caregiver assigned to each client and provides an effective, efficient system for providing long-term care, he says. Because anyone’s health and overall conditions change, Comfort Keepers’ caregivers try to routinely observe clients to spot any shifts in hearing, vision, balance and potential health episodes. Even with all the reliable day-to-day services Comfort Keepers’ caregivers provide, Fred maintains that their companionship is one of the biggest reasons clients and their families like partnering with the company. BREAKTHROUGH (PG) Based on the novel The Impossible by Joyce Smith and Ginger Kolbaba, Breakthrough portrays the unbelievable true story of local St. Charles County teenager John Smith (Marcel Ruiz). John falls through the ice in 2015 while playing with his friends on a local lake. Once rescued, he has no pulse for more than 45 minutes. When his mother, Joyce, (Chrissy Metz) and father, Brian, (Josh Lucas) put all their hopes and faith in God, knowing that he will help their son pull through, it seems that divine intervention is exactly what’s taken place, as John awakes from have survived this horrific experience. Also starring Topher Grace as Rev. Jason Noble, Breakthrough is the mustsee movie this month, arriving in theaters Wednesday, April 17.

If you’d rather head home after dinner, then you have to catch Vice, available on DVD April 2. VICE (R) Adam McKay pulls out all the stops for this perfect date-night flick. He formulates a very entertaining yet surprising film as it shares McKay’s take on the trails, tribulations and profound political aptitude of our country’s most influential vice president to date: Dick Cheney. Vice stars Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award-winning actor Christian Bale as Cheney, along with lades for their performances, including Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney and Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush. Vice also stars Steve Carrell as Donald Rumsfeld and Tyler Perry as Colin Powell, and it’s definitely one of 2018’s best films.

WITHOUT PL ANE TICKE TS TO ITALY VITO'S IN THE VALLEY
50
Chesterfield Lifestyle | April 2019
FOR MADE-FROM-SCRATCH SICILIAN MEALS WITHOUT TRAVELING TO ITALY, DASH TO VITO’S IN THE VALLEY RESTAURANT AND PIZZERIA IN CHESTERFIELD. This family-owned and operated dining spot is the second of the LaFata family, who launched Vito’s Original Pizzeria & Ristorante in 1996 in mid-St. Louis. Vito’s in the Valley opened Oct. 6, 2013. “It’s our authentic family recipes that delight customers,” says general manager Giovanni LaFata. At Vito’s, it’s also about food quality, selection, service, atmosphere and value. Additionally, they make their sauces fresh every day. From classic appetizers, memorable salads and fresh panini to homemade pasta, calzones and signature pizzas, Vito’s also offers new dishes based on discoveries during LaFata family visits to Sicily. Customers often highlight the restaurant’s bruschetta, chicken piccata and shrimp appetizer. Eggplant Parmesan from the LaFata family has been a fan favorite for the past 20 years. Desserts, of course, include cannoli, tiramisu, cassata siciliana, salame di cioccolato and torta di pane casereccio. The Dolce Amore option enables a sampling the chef’s handful of favorite desserts. They offer about a dozen gluten-free menu options, as well. Each morning, Giovanni makes dough for the restaurant’s bread, sandwiches and pizzas. He also grows herbs to use. “With our kitchen being completely from scratch, we buy ingredients locally and seasonally as often as we can,” he adds. CONTINUED >

Vito's in the Valley team
The LaFatas partner with local vendors and shop from nearby farmers markets year-round for the freshest ingredients, incorporating St. Louis’ close-knit community and those special nuances into every dish. They say a local fan-favorite ingredient is Tony White’s Mighty Vine tomatoes, which are sweet like summer all year long. They believe those heirloom tomatoes help their caprese salad remain as popular as it is. Baldos Gelato, Digregorio, Ozark Forest and Midwest Pasta are among the long list of other companies that help make Vito’s products greater every day. For private events, Vito’s in the Valley’s bar area offers a vibrant atmosphere and can seat up to 60 people. The main dining room is formal yet family-friendly and seats up to 120 people. The main patio can seat up to 70 people for those who would like to dine alfresco. Jessica LaFata, Giovanni’s spouse, says the best part about the restaurant is the customers. “Gio and I both are ‘people people.’ We love getting to know every customer that comes into our second home and enjoy sharing our passion with them. It sounds crazy, but all of our dearest friendships began at Vito’s—some customers, some staff—all wonderful people,” she adds. “Likewise, it’s also so heartwarming to see how much our guests have welcomed us into their lives. We do a lot of catering and private events for everything from rehearsal dinners and weddings to baby showers and life celebrations. To have a hand in things so special is such an honor. We realize the significance and responsibility, and we will always appreciate that guests chose us.” 52

JUICEMASTERS FRESH JUICE AND SMOOTHIES BAR MOBILE TRUCK IS COMMITTED TO BEING 99 PERCENT ORGANIC, OWNER AND OPERATOR COREY LOGAN CONFIRMS. He seeks to provide healthy, nutritious options at local parks, festivals and events via tasty and convenient fresh juices and smoothies. In fact, he supplies pure vegan beverages as well. “We work with local farmers to ensure the freshest seasonal items make their way into customers’ cups. We support the work of local merchants to provide consumers with delicious, sustainable products that we can all feel proud of,” Corey says. This entrepreneur says he’s long been a foodie who made beverages for his family. “My stepson became sick with lymphoma, and

liquid nutrition was the simplest way to get him nutrition. I began to research health and wellness,” he explains. By 2005, Corey picked up work as a juice bar his family could benefit from the employee discount for natural and organic food items. “I enjoyed making these healthy beverages and honed my craft of smoothie and juice bar prep,” he adds. Juicemasters began as a “pen name” for Corey, who had a passion for preparing fresh fruit smoothies. When Wild Oats closed in 2008, he says many regular customers were upset they could no longer enjoy the juice bar. “Some of my fans mentioned I should open my own business serving juice and smoothies, but I wasn’t ready at the time. Over the next few years while traveling to other cities, I saw mobile juice and healthy dessert businesses doing well,” he says, explaining that his daughter also motivated him by really wanting a beverage at the Earth Day festival they were attending. “When we finally found the Icee stand, there was one man and 30 people in line. That’s when Juicemasters began. I started making plans for the next event, the African Arts Festival; and eventually the juice truck,” he says. So, in 2011, Corey began vending fresh juices and smoothies at local festivals, such as the African Arts Festival and CHIPS Health Fair. In 2012, Juicemasters grew in its outreach at community events, vending at St. Louis Earth Day, African Arts Festival, the Festival of Nations, the Midwest Health and Natural Hair Expo, Yours Market and Better Family Life’s

REUSE
The next time you ask for a plastic straw, grab plastic bags at the grocery store or buy a bottle of water on your way to the gym (we’re all guilty of something!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the

world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.
