WHEN YOU THINK OF FAMILY, WHAT COMES TO MIND? Maybe it’s the people you share your mornings with: the husband or wife who makes you breakfast, the toddler who wakes you up before sunrise or the drooling pup in the kitchen just itching for a full dish of food. Maybe it’s the people you share your years with: the grandfather who tells you old war stories at the Thanksgiving table, the uncle who brings you souvenirs from his travels or the aunt who can almost perfectly replicate your grandmother’s best pie recipe. Or maybe it’s the people you share your life with: the friends who have and always will be there for you, the parents who have always supported you and watched you grow or the kids who are watching and learning from you day after day. This month here at Chesterfield Lifestyle, we’re celebrating our Kids + Pets issue.

Lo c a l H o r s e Lov e r s P o ny U p CHESTERFIELD OFFERS SOME OF FINEST EQUESTRIAN EXPERIENCES IN THE MIDWEST ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY KRISTI FOSTER CHESTERFIELD RESIDENTS DON'T HAVE TO DRIVE FAR TO SECURE SOME THE FINEST HORSE-RELATED TRAINING, BOARDING, SALES, LEASING AND SUMMER CAMPS IN THE MIDWEST. Kennedy Farms Equestrian Center in Chesterfield accommodates all types of riders, whether the goals are for athletic, recreational or social purposes. The center's staff especially is helpful for serious students and horse lovers striving to compete and win. FIRST LOVE OF HORSES The "Pony Pals" program at Kennedy Farms introduces children ages 4 to 8 years old to the world of ponies. Sessions include equine-related activities, stable safety, horsemanship and basic riding lessons. Instructors teach skills to develop lifelong confidence in children, says the center's president and owner, Micaela Kennedy. She says a typical Pony Pals program starts with a Pony Salon, during which children tour the farm, meet their pony, and learn how to groom and brush it. The second week of the program combines riding and playing pony trivia games. "The third week consists of a Pony Spa, where kids can pamper the ponies with a bubble bath. It's lots of hands-on fun!" says Micaela, who herself has more than 30 years of riding experience. The children can create special treats for the ponies and learn how to safely feed them. Pony Pals participants also receive a themed T-shirt. DREAMING OF HORSE SUMMER CAMP? Beginner camp sessions at the Kennedy Farms Equestrian Center are designed for students with no riding experience as well as beginner/ limited/novice riders who have skills that may include walking, trotting, cantering and jumping small cross rails or fences. OPEN HOUSE

(CON TI N U ED)

Intermediate and advanced camp sessions are designed for students who are able to walk, trot and canter with confidence and are able to jump small courses. Students are divided into groups within each camp based on their experience and riding ability. All students are taught horse safety and care and learn the proper methods for grooming, tacking, leading and mounting horses. Students also learn the gaits important to English Riding, proper position and balance, the correct use of posting diagonals and how to ride in the two-point position. Micaela says an emphasis is placed on establishing a balanced and secure seat, instilling confidence and laying a foundation for further development. Students with greater skill levels then apply their knowledge to jumping cross rails and low fences. Other Kennedy Farms activities include lectures, instructional videos, games, and arts and crafts. All instruction is tailored to each camper’s existing skills and knowledge. Intermediate and advanced campers work to refine the skills they already have through work without stirrups and in the two-point position. More advanced topics of horse care and barn management also are covered. Intermediate and advanced campers are expected to know how to tack, untack and groom their own horses. SEEKING A PLATFORM FOR EQUESTRIAN SPORT? The lesson program at Kennedy Farms is designed to enable riders to set individual goals and to progress at their own rate, Micaela says. "We provide the opportunity to accomplish your goals at any level and the adaptability to cater to your changing objectives. Harmony exists throughout the Kennedy Farms’ community as riders from every level are encouraged to participate in their own programs while at the same time supporting each other with enthusiasm and knowledge sharing," she says. New riders at Kennedy Farms take an evaluation lesson to assess riders' goals and skill levels and to design a lesson program suited to that particular rider. "Each student is unique, and we pride ourselves on helping individual riders develop to the level they seek at a pace they find comfortable," she says. Kennedy Farms' lesson programs start with recreational riders for once or twice a week and people who ride as a social or physical fitness program. For very serious-minded riders who can dedicate the time to gaining show-related recognition, the designations span beginners and novice to intermediate and advanced. Micaela says her philosophy of teaching sportsmanship and horse-

Quality Time with Your Kids ARTICLE CARLY HEBRON

EACH YEAR SUMMER COMES AND GOES. We hang up the bathing suits and beach towels for our business attire and busy schedules. As summer comes to an end, we should capture time spent with our kids. We should hold onto the memories from the last couple months and let them inspire us for the rest of our year. Don’t leave it up to Facebook to remind your family of the time well spent. Ever heard the expression “time is of the essence?” This is another way of saying “something must be done immediately.” We live in a world of busyness, to-do lists and constant “I want it now” mentalities. Without the ability to stop and enjoy life, we will live in a mode of yesterday and tomorrow, never the now. Here are 10 ideas on how to stop what you’re doing and spend more time with your kiddos.

1. Put the phone down! 2. Create some “off-screen” activities. 3. Bond with everyday tasks like cooking or cleaning. 4. Go outside. 5. Ask them about their day. 6. Take your kids on a date. 7. Have a teenager? Take them out to lunch or coffee to connect and talk. 8. Have a family movie or game night. 9. Get involved. Take interest in their hobbies. 10. Make time in the week to have fun. Do not get lost in the craziness of the school year. Summer will come and go, but the time you spend with your kids now matters! There is only one summer 2018 and only five more months until 2018 disappears. Make the best of this year that you possibly can! Take chances, love people, savor each and every moment and continue to be the best you!

IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS SPRING FROM STORIES FOR YOUTH UNBRIDLED LOVE OF HORSES Longtime St. Louis broadcaster, TV veteran and animal lover Jennifer Blome says she's always been a bookworm. From growing up in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, she and her best friend relished the book "Misty of Chincoteague" because they loved horses. Written by Marguerite Henry, the book describes Pony Penning Day, an annual event held each July by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department during which "saltwater cowboys" round up feral ponies. The story's essence made a personal connection, pulling her into its core. "Our family spent summer vacations in Ocean City, Maryland, and often

visited

Assateague

Island,

which is best known for its herds of feral horses," Jennifer says. In the book, the horses swim to Chincoteague Island and are auctioned to raise money for the volunteer fire department equipment. Jennifer says thousands of people turn out to watch the event, and that children in the book work hard to save their money to buy a wild pony.

26

Chesterfield Lifestyle | August 2018

"It is their dream, but they get more than they bargained for and learn that sometimes, you can’t always keep what you love," she says. Jennifer recommends this book for any child who loves horses. "If you can follow it up with a visit to Assateague Island National Seashore, so much the better!" she adds.

I-THINK-I-CAN OPTIMISM Chesterfield Mayor Bob Nation says one of the most frequently read books he shared with his three sons when they were young was “The Little Engine That Could" by Watty Piper. "I remember reading it many, many times, as we have three sons that are fairly close in age. I thought it sent a good message, and I think it would be a good one for me to read my grandkids," he says. Bob also fondly remembers “Scuffy the Tugboat” by Gertrude Crampton.

Boarding and Parting with Fur Babies for Camp: PREPARATION TIPS TO EASE PET PARENTS, PLUS ADORABLE PHOTOS TO SHARE ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

PEOPLE ARE CRAZY IN LOVE WITH THEIR PETS, AS EVIDENCED BY THE CUTE PHOTOS RECEIVED WHEN READERS WERE ASKED TO SHARE IMAGES OF SOME OF THEIR FAVORITE TIMES WITH THEIR FUR BABIES. However, several of the adored pets had feathers rather than fur, which was so fun to see! Whatever your preferred pets, we agree with the value received from the unconditional love they provide. Please give your pet an extra hug today for us! Due to our close bond with pets, we all realize it's challenging to not worry about them when we have to part ways, either for a brief planned or longer unplanned stay away from the home. Getting mentally and emotionally prepared may be the key. One local pet facility caters to the hopes, questions and concerns pet parents have.

"We know how important it is to find the right caregiver for your

Chesterfield at 4 Clarkson Wilson Center.

Serving the Greater St. Louis area since 1974, five of the Kennelwood locations offer on-site boarding, grooming, day camp and training services. Meghan says the Chesterfield Kennelwood facility provides on-site grooming, day camp and training, along with complimentary FETCH Shuttle services to and from the company's resort at Page and Lindbergh for boarding. She says they also specialize in pet care services, such as SHED-X treatments, Invisible Fence pet containment solutions, and home pick-up and delivery options. The Kennelwood Spa located inside of the Humane Society of Missouri’s headquarters at Macklind Avenue offers grooming services for both customers and rescue pets being cared for at the facility. A portion of this spa’s proceeds helps the shelter pets there. Knowing how gut-wrenching it can be for pet owners to part with their fur babies, Chesterfield Lifestyle asked Meghan about tips for softening the blow.

PEOPLE ARE SO CLOSE TO THEIR PETS, IT'S DIFFICULT TO FEEL COMPLETELY OK ABOUT BOARDING THEM. WHAT SHOULD PET OWNERS CONSIDER AND DO PRIOR TO SPEAKING WITH A BOARDING FACILITY ABOUT A RESERVATION? We recommend a tour of our facilities. We don't require an appointment for tours, as we are tour-ready at all times and are completely transparent with customers about the care we provide to their pets. Our professionally trained staff are present in all five of our overnight boarding resorts. We believe it’s important to have staff present and actively caring for the pets around the clock. Not all boarding facilities provide that level of care! Kennelwood requires all dogs and cats to have current vaccinations, including Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccination for dogs. We strive to provide a safe and healthy environment, and we feel our vaccinations requirements help to ensure all the pets in our care are protected. WHAT TYPE OF PAPERWORK SHOULD BE SECURED OR UPDATED BEFORE BOARDING?

Mason Looney and Sadie

Current vaccination records, for sure, and a detailed list of medications your pet is currently taking. This is most important if Kennelwood will be administering these medications during your pet’s stay. Contact information is also important to update. If pet parents are leaving the state or country, it’s good to have a local contact in case of an emergency as well. It's also important to make sure your pet’s veterinarian contact information is current. ARE THERE WAYS TO PREPARE THE DOG AT HOME FOR BOARDING, ESSENTIALLY MAKING IT LESS STRESSFUL FOR THEM? WHAT SHOULD BE TAKEN ALONG, SUCH AS FAVORITE TOYS OR BLANKETS? We suggest pet parents take their pet in for a day at the spa or a day camp at the Kennelwood facility the pet will be staying as a way to acclimate themselves with our staff, the facility and the other sights and sounds of a boarding facility. At Kennelwood, we alleviate any anxiety that may occur for both you and your pet when they board with us for the

Chelsey Sweeten

first time. That’s why we offer our free Pet SleepOver Orientation prior to your pet’s actual vacation. Remember your first time going to sleepaway camp? It can rattle the nerves, and pets can experience the same emotions when being boarded for the first time. At Kennelwood Pet Resorts, we understand this and want to alleviate any anxiety for both pet parents and pets. That’s why we provide free pet sleepovers for pets to test-drive the experience. Your pet will spend the night with us and be treated to a personalized play time, a Yappy Hour, a Bizzy Bone and even a visit to the spa for a complimentary bath. When you pick up your pet the next day, you'll receive a thorough report on their overnight visit. We welcome your pet's favorite toys, treats, blankets and other bedding, too. THERE ARE MANY AMENITIES AND BOARDING CHOICES THESE DAYS. WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO DECIDE AMONG THEM? You know your pet best. Is your pet a social butterfly, or does he or she prefer to relax? We recommend that while your pet stays with us, he or she keep a similar routine to the one at home. Activities CONTINUED >

such as day camp, training and personal play time will help to keep your pet active and entertained during the stay. For pets who prefer more one-on-one time, training sessions or personal play times are best suited for them. You can keep your pet looking and feeling great with a visit to the spa before going home, or keep up on brushing with scheduled maintenance brushes throughout your pet’s stay. Treats are always a fun amenity. Our Yappy Hour treat is a specially formulated probiotic frozen yogurt designed to be easy on your pet’s stomach. Our Bizzy Bone is a fun and entertaining treat of mashed potatoes stuffed inside a Kong toy. We want your pet to feel at home when they stay at Kennelwood, and our amenities are designed to pamper your pet while you’re away. ONCE A DOG IS BOARDING, HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECOMMEND PET OWNERS CHECK WEBCAMS OR CALL IN TO SEE Selia and Snowbelle

HOW THEIR BABY IS DOING? HOW OFTEN IS TOO OFTEN? We welcome pet parents to check in on their pet as often as they would like. We're happy to provide Photo by Kristi Foster

updates to pet parents during our regular business hours. Our webcams are on from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., after which most dogs are asleep in their room for the evening and lighting is dimmer. Our private villa accommodations come with a personal attendant who will email or text photos and updates as often as pet parents wish. It’s important for pet parents to trust their pet care provider, so they can actually relax and enjoy their vacation, too. WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE ABOUT DROP-OFF? IN OTHER WORDS, HOW DO WE PET OWNERS DO IT WITHOUT TEARING UP? Don’t wait until you’re in a time crunch to drop your pet off. Give yourself plenty of time to go over instructions, have any questions answered and to say goodbye or see you later to your pet before we take them to their room or activity. If you haven’t already been on

a tour, ask to meet the manager, trainer or other staff member who will be responsible for caring for your pet. WHAT'S THE NO. 1 QUESTION PEOPLE ASK YOUR KENNELWOOD TEAM ABOUT PET BOARDING? Is he/she going to be in his room the whole time? Of course, we offer many activities and treats to keep your pet entertained during their stay. Our accommodations are more like a room in your home rather than a cage. Potty breaks happen often as well. However, even if a pet parent didn’t sign their pet up for day camp or other special activities, our professionally trained staff are pet lovers. They will treat your pet just like family. As an example, when our staff goes into your pet’s room to give them fresh water or turn down the covers, this is also an opportunity to interact with your pet—pet them, love on them, talk to them and provide Photo by Kristi Foster 34

WE ROUNDED UP SOME LOCAL “CANINE-CRAZY” SPOTS AMONG 18 ACRES THAT CHESTERFIELD OFFICIALS PURCHASED SEVERAL YEARS AGO FROM THE EBERWEIN FAMILY TO DEVELOP A COMMUNITY PARK ARE 2 ACRES DEVOTED TO A DOG PARK. Located at 1627 Old Baxter Road, the dog park allows pups to explore the many facets of the wonderful outdoors. This park remains named after the Eberwein family, who first settled in Chesterfield more than 100 years ago. The Eberwein Dog Park is open to Chesterfield residents only, and participating dogs must be registered at Chesterfield City Hall with their own accompanying dog tag. Tags are $30. To register a dog, one needs to show documentation that the dog has been spayed or neutered, proof of residency and rabies records for each dog. This park has separate areas for small and large dogs. Dogs younger than 4 months are not allowed in the park, however. To preserve the history, character and charm of the site, Eberwein Park was designed as a passive community park with a farm-like theme, including preserving the red barn, which originally was constructed in the early 1900s. This park also includes trails, public art, a community garden, a playground, picnic benches, a native prairie garden and restrooms. EAT, PET, LOVE Fortunately, several pet-friendly restaurants in Chesterfield welcome dogs at their outdoor tables.

GIVING BACK

MIRACLES DO HAPPEN HEALTHCARE SPECIALISTS AT MISSOURI CENTER FOR REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE UNDERSTAND THE JOURNEY TOWARD FERTILITY CAN BE AN EMOTIONAL ONE FOR MANY COUPLES. It's certainly a different kind of hardship when

LOCAL FERTILITY TREATMENT FACILITY ASSISTS COUPLES IN BECOMING PARENTS ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

desired pregnancies don't happen as planned. From the MCRM facility in Chesterfield led by medical director Dr. Peter Ahlering, state-of-the-art fertility care and advanced reproductive treatments are offered through sophisticated technologies. Dr. Mira Aubuchon is a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist at MCRM, and physician assistant Ceara Barmeier rounds out the medical staff."It's about comprehensive, compassionate and personalized fertility treatment options," Dr. Ahlering says. Oftentimes, it's important to ensure that women's 'biological clocks' are still ticking when and how they should be. In the last few years, Dr. Ahlering says he and the MCRM staff steadily have seen benefits of proactively evaluating fertility potential during regular annual exams, even at ages as young as 28 years.

"Early signs of diminishing ovarian reserves often can be caught through fertility screenings during the regular appointments women schedule with their OBGYNs to refill birth control pills," he says. "If young ladies approaching 30 years of age think they may be at all interested in having babies in the future, it's helpful to start having periodic assessments. We've seen up to 15 percent of women younger than 30 not knowing they may be facing future egg-related challenges." MCRM is the only fertility center throughout the Midwest to offer Sperm Nanobead Selection, a new innovative technique for high-quality sperm selection. In fact, they pioneered the technique in 2015. Other advancements there include the EmbryoScope timelapse incubator system and on-site male DNA Fragmentation testing. MCRM’s lab is Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendmentscertified and is also an ISO-certified “clean-lab” in reproductive

medicine, Dr. Aubuchon adds. Founded in 2013, the center provides new beginnings with happy endings for those struggling with infertility. Dr. Ahlering says everyone has four basic fertility treatment options available: wait patiently after initial evaluations, use ovulation induction through pills or injections, employ artificial or intrauterine insemination or make use of in-vitro fertilization. "IVF is often the best course of action for those who have had multiple miscarriages, endometriosis, tubal factors, fewer presumed eggs in reserve, or those using an egg donor or surrogate. It's also often the most helpful for couples who both have combined fertility challenges," Dr. Ahlering says. MCRM fertility coaches can assist with questions about nutrition and fitness strategies, as well as vitamin supplements, acupuncture benefits, third-party reproductive options, same-sex family building, alcohol usage, smoking and the spectrum of infertility patient support. "When patients meet with our reproductive specialists to learn about fertility care options, the first steps involve an initial consultation plus usually some basic blood work and possibly an ultrasound or semen analysis," Dr. Aubuchon says. MCRM reports annual success rates about various treatments and has had especially good results through the Nanobead-assisted technique. "We look forward to assisting you in bringing your dreams to life," Ceara says. In that regard, egg retrieval processes for this month's batched "IVF Cycle Week" begin on Aug. 13 at the MCRM Fertility Education and Conference Center in Chesterfield. 17300 N. How ‘Bout an In-Home Massage... For Your Deserving, Pampered Pooch? ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY ASH & OAK CANINE MASSAGE

WHEN ALYSON SNELLING LOST HER DOGS, ASTRID AND MARCO, UNEXPECTEDLY TO CANCER IN 2013, THE LOSS SET HER ON THE PATH TO BECOMING A CANINE MASSAGE THERAPIST. Now, Alyson, who is certified through the National Board of Certification for Animal Acupuncture & Massage, has an animal massage business with its name and logo honoring her two canine buddies: Ash & Oak Canine Massage (ash trees represent healing; oak trees represent strength and stability). "Anything I can do to help dogs to relax to alleviate tension, stress or pain so their bodies can heal in natural, holistic ways, I'm focused on that," she says. Alyson provides massages to dogs for four main reasons: to ease muscle restrictions, stimulate circulation of body fluids, relieve pain and to lessen stress. She says massage therapy also loosens muscle knots, strengthens dogs' immune systems and increases flexibility in senior or arthritic canines. "While massage for dogs is a new concept for many people, it's a great step to take for canines of all ages and even post-surgery to reduce swelling around incisions. It's not just for old dogs with wear and tear. Massage therapy is good for all of them to work out the toxins," explains Alyson, who also teaches massage. Massage also is a good way to reduce anxiety in dogs and to socialize puppies or teach them body awareness. "My bond with dogs is all about building trust through constant communication and touch to help them feel better. We have a relationship that helps them heal because their bodies are relaxed," she says. Alyson also has assisted kittens and cats and eventually would like to be certified to work with horses. "Cats are a little harder to read, but their circulation can benefit from massage, and it can help with health issues such as constipation." For more information, call 314.896.0979 or visit AshAndOakTherapy.com.

MASSAGE IS NOT THE SAME AS PETTING DOGS, ACCENTUATES ALYSON, WHO IS AN ATTUNED REIKI PRACTITIONER. Her services are provided in-home in the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area or at Back On Track in O'Fallon. Half-hour to full hour sessions range from $40 to $70, with packages available.
