A 5.5-mile segment goes from TOPGOLF St. Louis to the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Club and over the Missouri River to connect with the Katy Trail and the Busch Greenway. The greenway then goes another 3 miles to Centaur Road. A 2-mile segment also was completed on the Monarch Levee from Long Road to Baxter Road. A small parking lot is available off Eatherton.

IN CHESTERFIELD. In 2017, WoH representatives worked in 10 countries to directly serve 45,858 people. Carol Enright, WoH communications manager, says the group’s volunteer pilots transport U.S. individuals with serious illnesses and health conditions to life-changing treatment at medical facilities. “Outside of the U.S., we fly people living in remote areas to the nearest hospital. In most cases, this is a 30- to 45-minute flight, versus hours by car over rough terrain. We also use airplanes to fly doctors into communities to provide medical clinics to treat injuries, illness, pregnant mothers and children,” she says. The first WoH mission was in 1965. “Our founders learned of a missionary nurse and nun, Sister Michael Therese Ryan, who was flying around the deserts of Kenya providing medical care and resources to the starving people there. The canvas wings of Sister Ryan’s plane had been chewed by hyenas and were falling apart. On May 25, 1965, Wings of Hope sent her a metal Cessna plane. Since then, we have worked in hundreds of communities and completed thousands of missions,” Carol says. Until 2003, she says the group operated exclusively in developing countries. At the international field sites, Carol says many people are not aware WoH is behind the assistance they are receiving. “But our in-country partners share stories with us of how villagers know when the clinics are scheduled, and they flock to the runway to greet the plane and the doctors.”

AS A STATE-MANAGED PUBLIC RECREATION AREA IN WILDWOOD, THE PARK'S 2,441 ACRES WERE ADDED TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES IN 1985. This park was created in memory of Edmund A. Babler, who was born on Oct. 11, 1874, in Appleton City, Mo. He graduated from Missouri Medical College, now Washington University Medical School. In 1898, he became a surgeon who developed a large private practice in St. Louis and devoted himself to charity cases. He died from pneumonia at the young age of 55. His brother, Jacob Babler, ultimately donated the land and named the park after Edmund.

Have Horses? Will Ride! In the summer and early fall, patches of butterfly weed, horsemint and canopies of pawpaws can be found along the horseback riding trail of Babler State Park. The 6-mile equestrian trail passes historic stables built by Civilian Conservation Corps crews. It also leads past the Bates Picnic Area. Note: Visitors must bring their own horses, as the stable in the park has been inactive since the early 2000s. Babler Park also offers four hiking trails ranging from 1.25 to 2 miles in distance (13 miles total), a 1.75-mile paved bicycling path and various camping sites.

Three large picnic shelters and 200-plus picnic sites are scattered throughout Babler Park. The Cochran, Alta and Walnut Grove shelters may be reserved. Occupancies of the shelters range from 70 to 130; they are equipped with fireplaces, grills and picnic tables with nearby water and restroom facilities, however, there's no electricity in the shelters. The park also includes historic sites, such as a small cemetery and tunnel built in the 1930s by Civilian Conservation Corps workers. It's also the home of the Jacob L. MUNY MARVELOUS BEGINNINGS On June 16, 1919, The Muny opened with a production of “Robin Hood.” Roots for The Muny were planted in 1913 with the St. Louis Pageant Drama Association. The sacred St. Louis spot anchored musicals, operas, concerts and ballets within the area’s 6,000 square feet. For many, The Muny is their first theater experience. It’s a seductive, under-the-stars undertaking that sets the bar for the rest of their lives regarding expectations for plays, no matter where they live. The Muny’s centennial opening production was Jerome Robbin’s “Broadway.” Other June shows were “The Wiz” and “Singin’ In The Rain.” July shows include “Jersey Boys,” “Annie” and “Gypsy.” The season concludes with the infamous “Meet Me in St. Louis” Aug. 4-12. Artists Heather Headley and Matthew Morrison cohosted the Centennial Gala May 18. An Evening with The Stars celebrated The Muny’s diverse history and musical theater.

Missouri History Museum's "Muny Memories: 100 Seasons Onstage" exhibit, which opened June 9, explains in great detail how the theater was formed, highlights shows from past seasons and shares peeks at backstage elements that demonstrate how the famous Muny magic works. Organized by the museum's employees, the exhibit shares recollections of stars and staff. Exhibit visitors can leave their own Muny memories, vote on their favorite stage star and even learn a few dance steps. The Muny’s longtime slogan, Alone in Its Greatness, is one of the best ways to describe the nation’s largest and oldest continually operating outdoor theater.

country. I strongly support this country, but I vigorously support the service members who've protected (and still protect) this wonderful country of ours. They mean the world to me. They should mean the world to everyone. The United States isn't the only country they protect. They deserve everything we give them. They gave us everything. WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH HONOR FLIGHTS? We take 10 flights per calendar year to Washington, D.C., with 25 World War II or Korean War veterans for them to see the memorials built in their honor. It's an amazing journey with the true heroes who literally saved the world. These World War II heroes are passing away at a rate of 450 to 550 veterans per day. It's only a matter of time before they're all gone. We're working feverishly to take each of them to see their memorials and help them realize the gravity of their heroic actions. Karl also is a board member and photographer for Little Patriots Embraced, a group based in Kirkwood whose volunteers take care of the children of deployed and/or deceased American soldiers. Additionally, he volunteers with Gateway Warrior Foundation, a nonprofit whose representatives raise money to pay for things veterans need, including service dogs. "I choke up every time I see a veteran with a dog," Karl says. "The importance of celebrating our freedom is without measure. Look at the rolling hills of Arlington National Cemetery and tell me how important it is to celebrate our freedoms. Fathers, uncles, sons, mothers, aunts and daughters lost their lives delivering freedom to the rest of us. This truth shall not be taken lightly and should never be forgotten."

FROM THOSE ON THE STAGE TO THOSE REVERING THE STAGE, THE MUNY HAS CREATED LIFELONG MEMORIES FOR MANY: Claire Logan says now that she's older, she realizes "how lucky" she was to be born in St. Louis and "blessed" to be a Muny Kid and Muny Teen, starting with "Annie" in 2009. For her, growing up with, and at, The Muny was the norm. "There's absolutely nothing like being on that stage, the impact of seeing 10,000 people, sharing the whole experience with Broadway choreographers, directors and actors," she reminisces. Claire says she always felt valued with The Muny family, and that it ignited her passion for musical theater. "It was easy to fall in love with The Muny; its community is incredibly special." Melody Miller moved to St. Louis upon graduating college in 1991. She enjoyed many a beautiful summer evening eating Chinese food on Forest Park grass waiting for The Muny gates to open for the amazingly free seats. Her first experience was "South Pacific," for which old WWII aircraft actually flew over the stage. Although Melody moved away, she kept all those fond Muny memories in her heart. After her children grew into musical-loving teens, 20 years later, her family began to make the 5-hour car drive from Iowa to enjoy the free Muny nights, eating Imo's pizza on the lawn. Rachel Read's grandparents were Muny season ticket holders. Each year, they let her pick one show and bought an additional ticket so she could go with them. Even when she moved to Kentucky, she always spent the week with them leading up to their Friday night Muny tickets. "I saw so many amazing shows with them. They have since passed away, but I've returned to the Muny with my husband and hope to take my daughter there someday soon!" Even though Elizabeth moved from St. Louis, she kept her Muny tickets, sometimes giving them to charities. "Being one of the first to donate to the Muny endowment fund, I strongly believe in the arts and the fact that children need to be exposed to such a wonderful venue. The Muny will always be in my heart, and I suspect in a couple of years my daughter will be back in St. Louis, and as she starts her family, she, too, hopefully, can find that bond we found." Rachel Bladow got hooked on Muny magic as a young girl, which inspired her to participate in school, camp and community theater. "Every summer we'd return to the magical Muny to be swept away by the sights and sounds. I even made it a summer goal to see every Muny show; I was proudly able to succeed for a few seasons," she says. After Rachel moved to Florida and studied biology, she says people asked her how she was comfortable giving scientific presentations in front of any size audience. "I always respond saying that it's because I use to do theater for many years. However, without the Muny, I would've likely never become involved in theater. So in a way, I really have the Muny to thank. Thank you for celebrating the artsÂ and truly inspiring me to dream big." Karen Bellister's grandfather was a violinist in the orchestra when The Muny Opera first started. Now she takes her daughter to a couple of Muny shows, even though they live in California. "We never miss a summer at The Muny! Thank you for being a big part of our family!" Janet Kahre's first Muny show was "Cinderella" when her daughters were 4 and 6 years old. Shortly after that, they moved an hour away.Â But every week in the summer, they meet for the Muny and catch up. "The girls are 21 and 19 now, and thanks to Muny summer nights, always friends!" she beams. 40
