CHECK OUT A NEW SCARECROW Scarecrow restaurant staffers made the move from 1095 Chesterfield Parkway to 101 Chesterfield Towne Center in the Valley. The restaurant features 200-plus whiskeys, in addition to wines, beer, appetizers, soups, salads, steaks, pasta, chicken and salmon entrees. Co-owners Shawn and Lynn Mulholland opened the first spot in 2012. The new location holds about 200 guests indoors and nearly 100 on the patio.

'HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW' ADDICTION PROGRAM TO BE HOSTED AT WEST MIDDLE SCHOOL Would you recognize the signs of youth alcohol or drug use in your home?

On April 19, parents can view an interactive display of a teenager’s bedroom containing 60-plus items that could signal a teen is involved in risky activities. At the presentation, parents learn how to spot these warning signs, as well as receive tips for talking with children about the dangers of alcohol and drug use.

LINDSAY WANNER DONATES ARTWORK TO CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS SOME PEOPLE GAZE AT OUTGROWN OR TATTERED SPORTS EQUIPMENT, WISHING THERE WAS SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE TO DO WITH IT. St. Louis artist Lindsay Wanner took action when she pondered the same concept.

Lindsay breathes life into old sports gear that would otherwise clutter landfills, while she simultaneously helps community teams.

It all started with an American flag idea.

"I decided that with my construction working husband's help, I could make an American flag out of bats and baseballs," she says. "We spent an entire weekend planning, remeasuring, messing up, getting splinters, buying tools and having no idea how it would turn out.

"But we finished the flag, posted it, and it sold immediately."

Once the baseball flags took off, Lindsay contacted local baseball coaches and equipment managers to purchase their old items, allowing them to buy new bats and balls for their teams. It was a win-win.

She's since donated artwork to charitable organizations, such as Cardinals Care, Hannah's Helping Ways, Budweiser Guns 'N Hoses, BackStoppers, St. Louis County Police Welfare Association and the St. Louis Zoo. "The beautiful part about fundraisers is while I personally could only donate so much of my own money, my artwork raises funds above and beyond that, which is an incredible feeling," Lindsay says.

A LONG AND PROUD FARMING TRADITION IN MISSOURI MEANS EATING CAN BE MIGHTY FINE. Come April, asparagus is one of the new spring vegetables to crop up, so there should be plenty of this fresh perennial plant to pick up at the Schnucks Chesterfield store off of Kehrs Mill for recipe experimentation.

Did you know asparagus' folk name is sparrow grass, and that it once was classified in the lily family?

Schnucks Corporate Executive Chef Alex LaZella says asparagus is an amazingly versatile vegetable. He is happy to share this accompanying recipe that yields the following in each serving: about 120 calories, 9 grams total fat (4 grams saturated), 15 milligrams cholesterol, 75 milligrams sodium, 7 grams carbohydrate, 3 grams fiber, 3 grams sugars and 4 grams protein.

Total preparation time: 20 minutes Servings: 8

I N G R E D I ENTS + 2 bunches fresh asparagus (about 2 pounds) + 1 orange + 1 small lemon + 4 tablespoons unsalted butter + 1 2.25-ounce package sliced almonds (1/2 cup) + 1/4 teaspoon salt + 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

I N S T R U C TIONS 1. Heat large covered saucepot of salted water to boiling over high heat. Add asparagus and cook 4 to 5 minutes or just until asparagus is tender; drain.

2. Meanwhile, from orange, grate 1 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1-1/2 tablespoons juice. From lemon, grate 1 teaspoon peel. If desired, grate additional peel from orange and lemon to use as garnish.

3. In the same saucepot, melt butter over medium heat.

Add almonds and cook 2 to 3 minutes or until almonds are golden brown, stirring occasionally.

4. Stir in juice, peels, salt and pepper. Add asparagus and toss to combine. Serve asparagus garnished with additional grated peel, if desired.

“Asparagus shines in almost any cooking method, and enhances many things: quiche, pasta, steak,” Alex says. “Asparagus is so popular at my house; we battle over who gets to dip our bread crusts in the asparagus-flavored oil left on the roasting pan!”

LOUIS METRO RESTAURANTS BY DELIVERING THE JUST-RIGHT FLAVOR OF SUMMER YEAR-ROUND. Consequently, regional diners whisper a hearty thanks with every tasty bite that is as juicy as it is beautiful, especially during winter months.

As a farm-to-table entrepreneur, Tony White grew up in California around his grandfather, who farmed fruit trees. Tony's agricultural roots again took hold in Missouri when he met "Mr. Fortune," who shared a small area of a fertile river bottom field in the Creve Coeur/Maryland Heights area so Tony could grow summer vegetables.

"Mr. Fortune, now in his 90s, has a slice of heaven there with his land. I appreciate all the wisdom he shares," Tony, who held a full-time, unrelated job when he became friends with this mentor, says.

"I'm not a gym person, so creating something in 5 acres started out as my stress relief. The first year wasn't great, but the second year was successful. Then, by the third year, we had more produce than we knew what to do with."

When a professional chef suggested about four years ago that Tony could sell produce to area establishments, he couldn’t pass up that opportunity. His first sale was 300 pounds of heirloom tomatoes to Marcella's Mia Sorella eatery, which were seen by another nearby restaurant crew at Napoli 2, who then started a bidding war over them.

"The buzz caught on. I listened to what customers needed, and we were off to the races," he says.

"Now we're taking hundreds of pounds of fruits, vegetables and herbs to dozens of restaurants, country clubs and organizations in the St. Louis area."

From Tony's business location at 36 Four Seasons Shopping Center in Chesterfield, his team supplies produce to local chefs, private clubs and restaurants, such as Balaban's, Annie Gunn's, YaYa's Euro Bistro, Vito's In the Valley, EdgeWild Restaurant & Winery, The Wolf, McCormick & Schmick's Seafood & Steaks, Twisted Tree Steakhouse, Snax Gastrobar, Oceano Bistro, Anthony's Italian Eats, The Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Company, BrickTops Restaurant, Anthoninos Taverna and Russell's Cafe & Bakery.

This year, Tony's staffers also are exploring a corporate delivery service through which companies could receive wellness boxes of fruits and vegetables for employees.

While they grow or source arugula, asparagus, eggplants, kale, blackberries, squash, melons, cabbage, kohlrabi, okra, chard, cucumbers, lettuce, jalapenos, strawberries, onions, spinach, zucchini, radishes and collard greens, hydroponic tomatoes are their specialty. Tony confirms the tomatoes are grown in certified, organic soil. He augments retail deliveries with additional produce grown by 15 like-minded farming families in the Midwest.

"One of the factors our customers really like is they can hand-select produce before they buy it," Tony says.

Are the new and trendy microgreens more than just garnish? What exactly are they anyway?

Tony explains they're basically baby plants—such as sweet peas, onions or radishes—harvested deliberately at a certain height or age.

"Microgreens are sort of the 'beyond parsley' food decoration. But, microgreens are loaded with five to 50 times more nutrients than a head of broccoli, and they provide a whole other layer of taste," he says.

One of the factors Tony most enjoys is working with chefs who channel their best efforts into adding an extra pop to meals. He plans to introduce a new, purple snow pea this season. He says it's a bonus to walk into places where the food looks beautiful and tastes magnificent.

"We work really hard to help chefs serve the best possible products," he says.

From a business started on the tailgate of a Nissan truck, Tony says he's happy to be part of the culture that's keeping St. Louis up on beneficial veggies.

"It's like delivering bounties of love."

Spring has sprung and so has what historically has been the biggest season for house sales.

My experience going through more years of the market than I care to share has taught me a lot about what the smart home buyers do (and don’t do). Here are my top three:

1. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE

Markets move quickly, and individual houses even quicker. Our sellers’ often have multiple offers the day they hit the market. This means you as a buyer need to maximize the quality of the time you spend with your agent so you can be ready to strike when your next awesome house is ready. Make sure you work with your buyer’s agent to get a solid wants/ needs list together, strategize pricing and locations that are best for you, have your financial piece in order, and make sure your dedicated agent knows everything they might need to know to ensure they can find you your next home.

DO: INVEST IN WORKING WITH YOUR AGENT CLOSELY SO YOU’RE READY WHEN YOU NEED TO BE

2. AGENT’S ARE NOT PUBLIC SERVANTS

In general, agents only get paid after your sale is complete. Buyer’s agents aren’t showing you houses as a favor, they work on a commission basis, paid by the seller’s agent of the home they buy.

This is good for you because it doesn’t cost you for representation and it pushes them to find you a house you’ll love and want to buy. But it also means if you are “playing the field” and working with a lot of agents you are unfairly taking advantage of them and their time. This may seem like a win for you, but

process so much harder. Not only do you have to manage the details of multiple agents, but you also aren’t getting an agent that will actually be working toward your best interests or prioritizing you in a fast-moving, often tricky market.

DO: CHOOSE AN EXPERT AGENT AND STICK WITH THEM

There are lots of agents out there, but not all agents are created equally. Having a team with the right blend of A+ specialists, with experience, expertise, and a track record of success will make all the difference when you’re looking for your new house. When searching, avoid a company so big you don’t matter, or so small that they don’t. Your agent’s reputation in the industry can impact you in negotiations, so look for a respected industry leader for a long term partner to see you through this sale and the next.
