With 12 fresh months at our feet, we’ve opted for a new year of renewal, reflection and change here at Chesterfield Lifestyle. That’s why you’ll notice some differences in our appearance (and we’re not talking about the couple extra pounds we put on over the holidays). But, even with a more unified style and beautiful imagery, our team still has one collective goal: to share the stories of everything and everyone the place we call home has to offer—and the things that matter most to you, our readers, for whom we produce this magazine each month.

(C ON TI N U ED)
In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.
Red
For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries
Purple
Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets
Green
Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas
Orange
Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches
White
White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips
Black
Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries
The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

TCHING TO INCORPORATE NEW DECOR OR NEW COLORS INTO YOUR HOME FOR THE NEW YEAR? According to Pantone, the color authority company
turned trend forecaster, in-the-know homeowners will flash mostly futuristic behaviors in 2018. Pantone's six home trends predicted to rise to the top are geometric patterns, typography everything, wood treatments, fringe, metallics and iridescent accents. Additionally, Pantone experts indicate intense colors will
be popular, as in bright blue, green, fuchsia, and purple,
which are complemented by iridescent tones of turquoise and hot pink, white and frosted almond. Representatives of leading paint company Sherwin-Williams
predict 2018 will embody the spirit of contemporary life with their three color palettes: Affinity, Connectivity and Sincerity. These color combinations reportedly are inspired by the collective culture of fashion to technology. Affinity is a color story of striking blue, animated fuchsia and stabilizing brown. This palette is meant to celebrate the relationship of people and places. The Connectivity palette draws from technology innovations, including pixelated oranges, digital blues and greens and high-def yellow. The Sincerity palette combines minimalism with a less structured look by weaving together sandy browns, muted grays and hazy greens that harmonize perfectly. There are plenty of ways to incorporate these new colors, interior design trends and timeless pieces into existing home setups, Christine Neskar and Donna Andrews, co-owners of Cocoon Home Consignment & Décor & Gift Boutique, assure. For example, inserting a lamp, rug, pillow or mirror done in the target colors for 2018 is an easy and immediate way to dabble with trends. Located at 103 Chesterfield Valley Drive, Cocoon offers like-new furniture and decor from residential consignors and retail vendors. Seasonal and home decor also is carried at the store along with unique gifts. Christine says they are receiving authentic, midcentury modern furniture and accessories from people who purchased it originally and now are downsizing. "The saying 'everything old is new again' definitely is true," she says. "We're getting real quality pieces, such as genuine Lucite from the 1950s and 1960s." She adds that organic, beautifully grained wood furniture is coming back, which immediately adds warmth to any room. She says she has seen popular color selections shift from beige to brown to Photo courtesy of Cocoon.
gray. Additionally, she and Donna are receiving a wave of aged brass and gold items, along with nickel-based hardware.

"Don't be afraid to bring in patterns," says Christine, who says the latest Midwest trends have been more about solids. She says kitchen backsplashes, chair fabrics and wallpapers are places in which to weave patterned designs. For example, big floral choices for wallpaper are making a comeback. Quality furniture is in vogue, Christine says, and the thinking about furniture has changed.
"WHEN OUR PARENTS BOUGHT FURNITURE, THEY HOPED IT WOULD LAST 40 YEARS. BUT PEOPLE NO LONGER BUY FURNITURE THINKING IT WILL LAST A LIFETIME, NOW IT'S MORE LIKE FIVE YEARS," SHE SAYS. "SO, BY BUYING FURNITURE THROUGH CONSIGNMENT, PEOPLE CAN GET REALLY GREAT PIECES AT SUCH A VALUE." She says several of their clients approach their store like going on a treasure hunt, especially when it comes to entertaining-related items. "We're seeing fine crystal, such as Waterford candlesticks and vases, re-emerge," she says. Christine suggests mixing and matching crys-

tal items with burlap or other rustic pieces, such as barn wood. "It's like having bling on blue jeans. Throw in some plush, soft rugs and big, fur sofa throws to create a warm and cozy environment. People are cocooning in their homes more than ever." She says they have several hundred clients participating in their wish list, which enables each person to register what specific items they are seeking in hopes that other clients may have and want to part with those items. "These are eclectic products, and looking through the list, no two items are the same," she says. "That's what interior designers also like about our store. They can find one-of-a-kind items not found in markets."

TO THE RESCUE! A 15-MINUTE WORKOUT FROM VALLEY YOGA JENNIFER HOJNACKI LEADS VALLEY YOGA, WHICH SHE SAYS HAS THE MOST BEGINNER-FRIENDLY YOGA SESSIONS IN CHESTERFIELD. Indeed, she and instructors at Valley Yoga specialize in gentle yoga and offer classes that benefit every body type, regard-

less of age, fitness level, size, flexibility or limitation. They provide yoga classes, private lessons and workshops, as well as a new student special rate. Jennifer says it's easy to try the following steps to incorporate the benefits of yoga stretching, strengthening, flexibility and balance into your life for 15 minutes a day. 01. CENTERING POSE, 2 TO 3 MINUTES Take a comfortable seat on your mat. Cross legs, or sit with legs stretched out in front. Lengthen spine

and close eyes. Inhale and exhale while observing your breath. Over time, lengthen, inhale and exhale. Continue to slow down the breath. 02. CAT/COW POSE, 1 MINUTE Come to hands and knees; stack shoulders over wrists and hips over knees, with hands slightly wider than shoulders. Spread fingers evenly and point index fingers straight ahead. Inhale, drawing the chest forward and up, lift tailbone and drop belly. Draw shoulder blades back. Exhale, draw the navel toward the spine, chin toward the chest and round spine evenly, like an

agitated cat. Repeat five times. 03. DOWNWARD-FACING DOG POSE, 1 TO 2 MINUTES From all fours, walk hands forward 3 to 4 inches, tuck toes under and lift hips toward ceiling, keeping knees bent. Press down through palms and straighten arms, stretching spine. Hold 1 to 2 minutes, lowering knees to the mat if tired, then lifting back up.

04. MOUNTAIN POSE, 1 MINUTE From Downward-Facing Dog, walk hands and feet together. Bend knees and roll or lift up to standing. Walk to the front of the mat. Press down through both feet, balancing weight between right and left foot and between front and back of feet. Firm the legs, draw navel in and up, stretch the spine and lift the chest. Breathe here for 1 minute. 05. WARRIOR II POSE, 3 TO 4 MINUTES From Mountain, step back 4 to 5 feet with left foot. Point right toes straight forward and left toes toward long edge of the mat. Then, turn

back toes in slightly. Line up right heel with left arch. With torso facing long edge of the mat, bend right knee, stacking knee over ankle. If the bent knee is going forward of the ankle, move foot forward until shin is straight up and down. Draw right knee out toward pinky toe side of the foot. Reach arms away from each other in a “T” and gaze over front fingertips. Hold 1 to 2 minutes, then pivot on feet and repeat on left side. 06. TRIANGLE POSE, 2 TO 3 MINUTES Come back to Warrior II, the first side. Straighten front leg. Shift hips back, and lean forward over the straight front leg. When you can’t reach forward anymore, allow right hand to drop down, lightly resting on shin or ankle. Place left hand on left hip or reach arm to the ceiling. Hold 1 minute, then return to Warrior II, pivot on feet and repeat on left side. 07. TREE POSE, 2 MINUTES Return to Mountain pose. Shift weight to right leg and lift left heel. Turn the left knee/leg out to the left from deep within hip socket. Keep the ball of left foot on the floor and stack left heel above right ankle or place the sole of the foot on inside of right leg above or below knee. (Do not press the foot into the knee.) Hold for five to six

breaths. Lower foot to the mat and switch sides. 08. SAVASANA OR CORPSE POSE To conclude, lie down on back. Allow feet and legs to flop open. Rest arms away from
