AS NOVEMBER ROLLS AROUND, WE’RE ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE APPROACH OF THANKSGIVING, THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND TIME SPENT WITH OUR LOVED ONES. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. BUTTERFLY HOUSE CELEBRATES FIRST FOUNDER'S DAY Visitors of the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House at Faust Park in Chesterfield received free admission on Sept. 18 in honor of the facility’s 20th anniversary and founder Evelyn Newman. The party celebrated philanthropist Evelyn’s vision of the butterfly house after she saw a similar attraction on a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. At the event, a new logo was unveiled. In order to avoid that credit card surprise, Chris recommends that every household create a budget to determine what’s available for holiday spending. “We would want to budget that amount beforehand so they don’t get into a financial problem,” says Chelsey Sweeten, COO and executive director of marketing. “Look at the past months of spending and discretionary income, remember that taxes are also owed and then budget.” Limiting end-of-year spending to one’s monthly discretionary income may avoid financial trouble.

The problems associated with not budgeting are multi-faceted and far-reaching. Unfortunately, overworking the credit cards can create a mountain of bills that may be difficult to pay. “Not being able to pay bills and/or being late with payments affect your credit,” Chris says. “If you have a high usage of your credit, then it lowers your credit score, which results in immediate financial penalties. If you want to refinance your home or get a car, you will end up paying a higher interest rate for the loan because of this low credit score. Plus, you could be hit with additional credit card penalties and increases in interest rates.” In addition to credit issues, spending more than budgeted may negatively impact retirement plans. “If you want to retire within the next 10 to 15 years, and if you don’t start budgeting now, you could end up cutting into retirement,” Chris says.
TAX IMPLICATIONS TAX IMPLICATIONS
Another consideration that may impact holiday spending is the changes in tax law. For example, W-2 employees who buy meals, tickets and gifts for clients for which their employers do not reimburse them used to be able to deduct these expenses; that deduction is now gone. In addition, some people rely on their prospective tax refund to pay for their holiday spending; this year, that may not be a realistic strategy. On the other hand, 529 plans now allow for K-12 funding, so gifting children and grandchildren money for education may bring a state tax deduction. The important lesson when it comes to holiday and end-of-year spending is to create a plan and consult with professionals. As a lawyer by day, Tonya handles every aspect of families: adoptions, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, annulments, protection orders, divorces, mediations, child support, paternity action and grandparents’ rights. She often witnesses the heart-rending elements of family life but believes that Thanksgiving can be an upbeat time of year that helps restore everyone’s souls. Tonya’s favorite Thanksgiving memories from her youth are of celebrating with extended family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, along with any of their friends. “I have eight first cousins on my mom’s side, and we were very close. So, many of my memories are of having a big Thanksgiving meal, followed by playing for hours with my cousins. Our Thanksgiving celebrations would often last all day into the evening,” she recalls. Another memory that stands out in Tonya’s mind from her childhood Thanksgiving celebrations is that everyone was welcome. “There were always friends of mine or of my cousins who came to our family celebration, either because their families lived out of state and they weren’t able to travel home that year, or just because they liked to hang out with our family,” she says. Tonya says if her mom or aunts thought there was someone who didn’t have somewhere to go on Thanksgiving, they would always invite them to her family’s gathering, even if it was someone they didn’t know that well. She says they also took plates of food to people who weren’t able to come for some reason if they believed they were alone on Thanksgiving. “I remember thinking it was nice of them to include others, but it wasn’t until I got older that I truly understood how much their thoughtfulness and generosity meant to others,” she says. Tonya continues those traditions at her own Thanksgiving celebrations. “So many of my friends and acquaintances have shared with me that they appreciated always being welcomed and included in our family celebrations, and that means a lot to me.” She’s appreciated everyone being good sports through the years, especially during the first year she hosted Thanksgiving at her house. “I woke up at 3 a.m. to put the turkey in the oven and set my alarm to check on the turkey at 6 a.m. Even though that time was supposed to be halfway through the recommended cooking time for such a big turkey, when I opened the oven, my turkey was already way overdone—think National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation turkey!” she says. “Although it was so overcooked it had split open, it didn’t taste too bad, at least not covered in gravy. Luckily for my family, we also had a spiral ham as a backup.” Her favorite current Thanksgiving tradition is gathering everyone at her house. “My motto is 'the more the merrier!' I typically cook the turkey, and the rest of the meal I have catered, while our family and friends also bring sides or desserts,” says Tonya, who admits she’s not the greatest cook and handling the meal this way makes the day less stressful. She says she also enjoys going Black Friday shopping. “Crazy, I know! This is an annual tradition I do with one of my best friends after our Thanksgiving celebrations with our families are over.” A Thanksgiving custom at her law firm, which she shares with her husband, John, is that early in the week, they have a potluck lunch for which everyone brings their favorite dish to share before playing games. “Every year, we give the staff off on Thanksgiving Day and close the office the day after Thanksgiving as well so everyone can enjoy a long holiday weekend with their family and friends,” she says.

Tips for Those Who Fa c e H o l i d a y s w i t h o u t their Children Thanksgiving is a holiday all about togetherness. When families aren’t able to be together post-divorce, emotional wounds can reopen quickly and remain raw. Images come to mind about trying to ease the stress of a Norman Rockwell-model holiday when the portrait of the family is incomplete. Tonya provides guidance and tips to parents who face Thanksgiving without their children, due to most custody plans having provisions for either sharing holidays or alternating holidays. “I try to encourage clients not to focus on the actual date of the holiday but the celebration of the holiday when they have their children around the holiday. For example, although Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, if the client won’t have the children on Thanksgiving Day, I encourage them to plan a Thanksgiving celebration the weekend before or after Thanksgiving,” she says. Tonya encourages her clients to create new holiday traditions, such as going to a movie, joining a friend or extended family member at their celebrations, or volunteering at a soup kitchen or shelter. Psychologists recommend using technology to say a quick hello to missing family members and friends on Turkey Day but not to dwell on social media. Then attention can be turned toward what self-care steps support individuality, such as curling up with that book that still needs to be read, binge-watching a TV series or cleaning out overstuffed closets. Sometimes, Thanksgiving is a great day to take an uninterrupted nap! 22

I absolutely love my career and get satisfaction from helping people during the difficult times in their lives,” says Tonya, who wanted to be an attorney for as long as she can remember. However, the moments she says she looks forward to the most are spending time with her husband and kids. “Sometimes what I do can be stressful, and there’s nothing better than when I pick up the kids from school or walk through the door at home, and they run up to me and give me the biggest hug!” she says.

Thanksgiving is Dan Stoverink’s favorite holiday. As a captain for the Monarch Fire Protection District covering Chesterfield, he says he hasn’t really known anything else. His father also was a firefighter, so he says working during holidays was— and is—a way of life. HOW DO YOU MENTALLY PREPARE FOR WORKING THE HOLIDAYS? It’s just something you accept. We’re fortunate that our families adapt to it. Now that I have grandchildren, it’s even more important to still find time to be together. We have smokers at our firehouses, so we’ll often make turkey during the shifts. WHAT'S THE MOST EVENTFUL THANKSGIVING SHIFT YOU'VE EVER HAD? The times that all of our families, dozens of us, have come up to the firehouse, and we set tables up and all get to eat and visit together. I really enjoy getting to see and talk to my crewmates’ families. The trucks are parked outside ready to go, and sometimes those meals get interrupted, but they are still wonderful memories. WHY IS THANKSGIVING YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAYS? I like the whole idea of it. And it’s nice that there are other people who appreciate us working, and they go out of their way to say thanks for being here. That

YOU'LL BE DEPLOYED TO JORDAN THIS THANKSGIVING. IS IT THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE MISSED A HOLIDAY DUE TO DEPLOYMENT? Oh no, it’ll be my fifth deployment. But I’ve also worked holidays at the fire station, and we’ll make a whole food spread.

HOW WILL YOU OBSERVE THANKSGIVING THIS YEAR? It depends on whether we’re at a permanent base or on the go in the field. If we’re at base, we might have a full Thanksgiving meal. If we’re moving locations on Thanksgiving, we may have to do it as a unit, just a bunch of guys, with turkey, gravy and K-rations. Sometimes, we’ll sit down and talk about Thanksgiving traditions, but it depends on our operation tempo. WILL YOU CELEBRATE TURKEY DAY WHEN YOU GET HOME? IF SO, WHEN? I don’t know, I’ll have to ask my mom. My parents host Thanksgiving, and my siblings and I do a lot of the cooking.
Angela Gibbs concurs it can be bittersweet to work holidays but says she doesn’t mind it as much, given that she gets the chance to do it with her “second family” of police colleagues. “I’m never in the boat alone,” she adds. WHAT ARE THE HARDEST ASPECTS OF WORKING HOLIDAYS? Not having time with your own family is hard, and unfortunately, in my position, I see families feuding on holidays and folks going through such hard times, they want to take a way out so that we as police officers are dealing with suicidal people. HOW DO YOU MAKE UP THE TIME DUE TO MISSING THE HOLIDAYS? I usually miss out as the massive part of my family gatherings. As a single mother, we adjust accordingly, and our holiday schedule is different every year. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WORKING ON HOLIDAYS? Citizens are great, and church members often bring us meals. It’s really nice to gather with co-workers and have a time to reunite around those types of holiday meals. WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? I used to work on the other side of the state, but most of my family is here. So I definitely am grateful about now living in the St. Louis area. Because of the people and this great community, this job during holidays reminds me that they still do care. That makes me remember why I want to do this job and how passionate I am about other people’s lives. 30

WILDWOOD IS HOME TO A SOMEWHAT HIDDEN ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATIONAL GEM: HIDDEN VALLEY SKI RESORT. But to winter enthusiasts, the only aspect about the resort that’s hidden is how it’s nestled into rolling hills near bluffs above the Meramec River. Hidden Valley sprang from interesting circumstances. After businessman Tim Boyd bought the Wildwood Golf Course in 1977, he converted the hills to a ski resort in 1982 while maintaining the golf course. The Wildwood facility was his first of several resorts throughout the Midwest and the northeastern United States eventually developed or acquired through his company, Peak Resorts. ment in exchange for permission to build 80 homes on the golf property, which then closed as a course. At the beginning of the 2012-2013 winter season, Hidden Valley managers opened two additional runs dubbed "West Mountain.” Another chairlift was added as well. Hidden Valley General Manager Greg Gavrilets says the 244-acre ski resort now features a variety of topographies spread over 17 trails, two terrain parks and two peaks. Altogether, the resort has five chairlifts, two surface lifts and two lifts in another entertainment area. He adds that their 110 snowmaking machines can pump more than 6,600 gallons of water per minute, covering 100 percent of the terrain in as little as 48 hours. Through the resort’s Snowsports Academy, Hidden Valley’s National Ski Patrol experts offer lessons for all ages and abilities. Additionally, Greg says they have more than 2,000 pairs

He says a new bar recently was remodeled for Hidden Valley’s ski lodge, which also has a fireplace, retail space, cafeteria, electronic lockers, vending machines and ample seating. “We also added the Polar Plunge Tubing Park in 2011, which is a family-friendly experience similar to sledding, with no prior experience required to participate in it and have fun,” he says. In January 2018, Wildwood city councilmembers approved Hidden Valley to build a new ZipLine Tour so the property could remain open year-round. Amended site plans, final zoning approval and St. Louis County permits for the zipline were underway at press time. When completed for the target date of spring 2019, the zipline is slated to be open daily from 9 a.m. to sunset. Greg says once the zipline is done, it will be Missouri’s longest zip tour.

Athletes can race locally, regionally and nationally. Racers and parents at all levels enjoy free NASTAR (NAtional STAndard Race) at Hidden Valley Resort most weekends. NASTAR is the largest public grassroots ski racing program in the world. Founded in 1968, NASTAR gives recreational racers an opportunity to compete and compare their scores to friends and family regardless of when and where they race using the NASTAR handicap system. She will be racing the NorAm (North American) circuit, which consists of top Canadian and U.S. racers.

“Sometimes even the best of Europe come over to compete with us. The next step for me is to start racing on the World Cup circuit, which has the best racers from all over. The races are held every year with the majority taking place in Europe,” she says. “My ultimate goal is to compete in the Winter Olympics. Ever since I was about 8, I’ve dreamt of being on the top of that podium in front of all the world. Representing my country at the Olympics has always been a dream of mine." SEASON PASSES STARTED SELLING IN OCTOBER For the first time, this year the resort’s team held an onsite Oktoberfest and Winter Gear Swap on Oct. 6. They also held a race for the inaugural Hidden Valley Hustle, which was a 1,000-foot hill climb at 32 percent maximum grade. Greg says the Hidden Valley team is intentionally planning more winter events for different types of audiences. “We’re bringing back the Wednesday night adult racing league, and college nights will be on Fridays, with college students getting half off lift and rental costs.” Hidden Valley opens Dec. 15 and closes Sunday Funday
