So much so, we typically print new menus every two weeks,” Bryan says. “The idea is to offer as many small-production selections as possible. By their very nature, these items are available for a limited time. So, we bring ‘em in, and poof, they’re gone. As a result, we’re always on to something new.” Their live music is as ever-changing as the drink selections. “Until we came along, live music in West St. Louis County was largely two guys with a catchy name, trading jokes and singing greatest hits from The Eagles and Elton John. Many of our artists tour nationally and appear at local venues, such as Off Broadway, Delmar Hall, The Focal Point and The Pageant,” Bryan says. By being open five nights a week and having music at least three of those nights, Naked Vine attracts musicians from Denver, Louisville, Detroit, Austin, New Orleans, and Nashville, along with the best St. Louisan musicians. “There’s simply no other venue in West County that continually books the caliber of talent that we do,” Bryan says. He says the Naked Vine group believes it’s important for people to receive something memorable when they go out to spend their time and money. They like the fact that they aren’t another chain location. “You can tell when someone walks in to Naked Vine for the first time. They stand in the doorway and just look around. You hear ‘Wow!’ a lot, as in ‘Wow, I had no idea this was here,’ or ‘This looks like a place you’d see in Nashville or Austin or Colorado,'” he says. Bryan adds that they’ve been called the “home of strip mall Americana,” “the best city bar in the county” as well as just “crazy.” “I tell the staff it’s our job to provide memories. A nearby St. Charles County winery delivers that haven plus more options, now with new owners, selections and menus. Specifically available year-round are breathtaking views of the Missouri River Valley from Defiance Ridge Vineyards’ historic farmhouse located in the middle of the state’s wine corridor. Rooted in the rolling hills of historic Show-Me wine country, Defiance Ridge’s 42-acre property spans a vineyard, tranquil lake and lush garden landscape. “You can enjoy a wide range of Missouri wines or one of our West Coast varietals while treating yourself to our seasonal artisan cuisine,” says Trevor Gillentine, operations manager and son of the vineyard’s owner, Chuck Gillentine. Trevor says his father previously was co-owner of a different winery but had a lifelong dream to own an operating vineyard. “So, we were fortunate when Wine Country Gardens became available to purchase,” he says. He assures that Defiance Ridge reflects the team’s combined passions for wine, farm-to-table cuisine, unique events and warm hospitality.“And no other winery has the same type of space as we do, with so many indoor and outdoor options, this close to St. Louis,” he adds. In fact, Trevor says they recently hosted their first Harvest Boot Camp to gather their vignoles grapes. Participants were served coffee and doughnuts before spending a morning harvesting alongside the Defiance Ridge vineyard crew. Guests then enjoyed an alfresco lunch on the terrace overlooking the vineyard. “Harvest students also receive a bottle of vignoles once the ‘fruits of their labor’ are processed,” he says. This is the first-ever harvest production year from this winery. Trevor says the grapes were basically growing wild before. Now, he’s working with award-winning vineyard manager and winemaker Tom "Murph" Murphy, who pruned, nurtured and maintained the vines. Trevor says by press time of this publication, the first of their wine aficionados already may have uncorked those inaugural bottles. CONTINUED >

U.S. Route 66 was established on Nov. 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. This mystical gateway road connecting Lake Michigan to the Pacific Coast was in danger of being forgotten in the late 20th century as superhighways in each state replaced its main artery. However, there’s been a more recent resurgence of interest in “the Main Street of America” as business owners, preservationists, historians and travelers saved and supported some of the route’s most famous landmarks. An excellent first step for getting in the mood for such a nostalgic drive is a spellbinding stop at St. Charles-based Fast Lane Classic Cars. Caryn provides what she calls “culinary Rx” through her new cooking and nutrition program for which she joined with Rouxbe School of Cooking and the Plantrician Project to create a self-paced, 60-day online cooking program. It delivers detailed video cooking instructions and nutrition fundamentals to home cooks and clients who want to improve health through food choices and cooking. “Whether you had a health scare or are just taking preventative measures, you can learn the tools that will forever help you gain and maintain a more fantastically healthy you,” Caryn says. “I can soften the learning curve during the transition, and we’ll take it step-by-step.
