Here's to Strong Women

MAY 2017 PUBLISHER

W

ashington Irving, the 19th-century American author known for stories such as Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow once wrote: “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

It’s a fitting echo as we welcome a month that—since recognized as a national holiday by Woodrow Wilson in 1914— celebrates mothers across the country and the maternal backbone of society on its second Sunday. Here at Lifestyle Publications, we’re in the business of inspiring people—and this May, not only are we inspired by mothers, but by all the strong, influential women who call Chesterfield home. People so important deserve to be recognized, and that’s why we’ve dedicated this issue of Chesterfield Lifestyle to all the moms, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, cousins and nieces who dissipate our clouds of darkness—and to some activities that can help them relax after they’re done being Superwoman. So, women of Chesterfield, this one’s for you. May you find respite from your busy schedules in these pages and be as inspired as we were by the leading ladies all around you. “Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.” -Unknown Happy Mother’s Day and happy May, Chesterfield.

HISTORIC STORE REOPENS AFTER COSTLY RENOVATION Head’s Store, the historic and nostalgic general store in St. Albans under new ownership, reopened in February after major renovations. The store offers gifts, grab and go chef-prepared meals, eat-in breakfast, lunch and dinner items, general groceries plus other amenities from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. New owner Datra Herzog, also the owner of The Inns at St. Albans, who purchased the store in December, said her plans for Head’s also include an ice cream parlor and private event space for birthday parties and family events opening later this spring. Herzog spent $100,000 bringing Head’s back into its own with a new kitchen, refinished hardwood floors, new coolers, counters, an island for grocery and gift items plus upstairs offices and the bones of the private event space and ice cream parlor.

a honeybee's smorgasbord. Regional plants influence the taste and coloring of bees' honey. "My bees bring back witch hazel in January, maple after that, then locust and finally clover during the summers," Duever says, explaining honey hues typically lighten as each season progresses. It turns out the entire Duever family has a bee affinity with Duever's dad and brother also being avid beekeepers. "We compare notes, but my brother is more into the biology of it all. Me, I just like talking to the bees and helping them out," he says. People often don't realize the importance of bees, with one– third of human food affected by these pollinators. Health benefits of consuming local honey are numerous, espouses Duever, who says it's a more digestible sugar that eliminates certain allergies and calms those who consume it. Duever's regular honey customers often seek the perfect balance to dietary needs. "They are typically mothers with one or two kids, or are from India or Pakistan or are people just looking for a natural sweetener," he says. He says Egyptians used honey to heal wounds and admits to slathering some on injuries, all with positive results. Meeting people from throughout Missouri and the United States has been a side benefit of selling the popular golden nectar, Duever says. A couple visiting from London even stopped and bought a jar of honey from them. "Everyone has a story about bees, and likes to share them," he says. "Many people aren't attached to Mother Nature anymore. Bees make you acutely aware of your surroundings. I really enjoy that connection, that attachment." One of the most intriguing developments at Duever's home was when a limousine and cars pulled up to his front yard. "The best we can tell, these were Hindus having a wedding ceremony in our cacti, plants and bees." Among the 20,000 known bee species, Duever says a healthy population of feral bees exists in the Chesterfield area. "There are probably 10 wild beehives for every square mile here." During May, the bees will be obsessed with swarming and splitting their hives according to old and new queen bees. "While swarming, I know the bees discuss where they want to go and what they want to do," Duever says. "It's fascinating to watch their life cycles, and I'm really glad to be a part of it." When Duever isn't tending his bees, he presides over his Chesterfield-based business, All Outdoors Inc., which he started in 1963 as a lawn mowing service. Now the company includes full landscape design, tree trimming, storm damage cleanup and year-round landscaping maintenance. To purchase this local honey, stop by Duever's self-service honey table at 100 N. Eatherton Road in Chesterfield or call 314.920.0115 for special orders of two pounds for $15 or 1 pound for $8. Duever says the honey money goes straight back to supporting the honeybees. 16

Parting Thoughts

ARE irregular heartbeats normal? ARTICLE JONAS COOPER, MD, MPH, FACC

D

id you know that every heart has an electrical system? It sends electrical signals that tell the different parts of the heart muscle when it is time to activate, like a conductor of an orchestra. Palpitation is the term we use to describe awareness or sensation of the beating of their heart. This sensation can last seconds, minutes, hours or days, and can reflect fast or slow heartbeats. Sometimes people feel a skipped or absent beat, a fast or hard heartbeat, a "flip" or a thud. While many different electrical irregularities can happen with the heart, they are often not dangerous. Slow heartbeats, especially if they are creating fatigue or lightheadedness, are often treated with pacemaker devices. These prevent the heart from going below a programmed number, usually 60 beats per minute. Overactive rhythms from the bottom chambers of your heart—the ventricles—may require installing a defibrillator, which shocks

34

Chesterfield Lifestyle | May 2017

rapid heartbeats to slow them down. Extra or skipped heartbeats are typically treated if they happen often enough to be a bother, sometimes with medicine, other times with procedures. Sudden unexpected racing heartbeats may be an electrical "short circuit" in the heart, probably affecting 1 in 200 people, which can also be treated if bothersome, with medication and/or procedure. One of the most common abnormal heart rhythms is atrial fibrillation, an irregular, usually fast and overactive electrical condition from the top chambers of the heart. This affects between 3 and 5 million Americans in 2017, can increase risk of stroke and can create symptoms that limit quality of life. There are several questions your doctor will want to ask to help make a proper diagnosis. It is useful to know when the palpitation first took place in your life, how often it happens, what it feels like, how long episodes tend to last and if there is anything you have experienced that triggers the spells or makes them go

away when they take place. Fainting or passing out is always something to take seriously. The best way to diagnose an abnormal heart rhythm is to get an electrical recording at the time you have your symptoms. If episodes last long enough, coming to the office or an urgent care center or emergency room for an ECG is particularly helpful. There are also heart rhythm monitors that can be worn at home that can help for episodes that can come on at any time. Your doctor may refer you to a cardiologist or an electrophysiologist for further evaluation. Many abnormal heart rhythms, especially if they cause bothersome symptoms, can be treated with a procedure called cardiac ablation. The goal is to pinpoint where the irregularity is coming from in the heart and stop it from happening. Precise ablation can be a permanent fix for heart rhythms, often not requiring ongoing medication treatment for the arrhythmia. The procedures are quite safe and are done with an anesthesia team for patient comfort.
