s we turn the page of this year’s calendar to December, it seems like it was just yesterday we were singing carols, unwrapping gifts and toasting to 2017. Now—as unbelievable as it may seem—it’s time to do it all over again.

A new Missouri Department of Revenue License Office has since opened at 100 Chesterfield Commons East Road. Hours of the new office are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. NEW OUTDOOR SCULPTURE ADDED TO CENTRAL PARK Chesterfield's latest outdoor sculpture was erected in Central Park. Called "Flow," the piece was created by St. Louis-based sculptor Leland Drexler-Russell, who was selected as the winner of the Public Art Contest held by the city's Parks, Recreation & Arts Department in December 2016. He has an architectural and mechanical engineering background. "Flow" is located near the park's bridge and contains four broadleaf cattail clusters, as well as a large lotus flower with solar panels in the petals. The solar panels, powered by sunlight, enable the flower to glow at night. the vines matured to allow the harvest of the first crop of 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of grapes. Vines and their fruit take three years to mature. Wine made with these grapes is expected to be available in 2020.

LEAN ON FOUR-LEGGED BEST FRIENDS DURING HOLIDAYS

eth Freeman is passionate about paying it forward. Her Saint Bernard therapy dog, Sasha, agrees and lives by that mantra as well. This devoted duo visits peo-

ple of all ages in hospitals, long-term care facilities and at special eventsâ€”people who need unconditional acceptance, hairy hugs and a few slobbers along the way. Sasha and Beth are part of the TOUCH (Therapy of Unique Canine Helpers) program managed by St. Louis-based Support Dogs Inc., a nonprofit group that connects dogs with people through 600-plus volunteers who raise puppies, train service dogs and certify their personal dogs to visit public places to assist with people's physical or mental challenges, children's reading, health-related situations or the elderly who simply can't have dogs themselves. SDI-trained dogs include mobility service dogs, hearing dogs and dogs to assist with medical issues. SDI dogs also work in courthouses with victims who've been mentally, physically or sexually abused. Beth says her journey in dog therapy started a few years ago when her teenage son ended up in St. John's Mercy Hospital with a ruptured appendix.

"He had two surgeries over 10 days and almost died," she says. "But one thing that cheered him up and got him emotionally ready for the second surgery was a visit from a therapy dog. In fact, he wouldn't go into the second surgery without seeing the dog." At the time, Beth had three dogs of her own, and her son made her promise she would look into having Sasha become a therapy canine. She says she didn't know the dog who visited her son was with SDI but eventually found the group. Sasha passed the organization's temperament test and even went through more months of training to be able to participate in acute care for children.

Beth enjoys taking Sasha to the annual Milk & Cookies with Santa event for children with autism at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel St. Louis in Chesterfield, which is hosted by Easterseals Midwest. "Events can be so loud for children, and they really benefit from getting Sasha's help," she says. Sasha and Beth also visit hospitals during Christmastime, often decked out in matching Santa outfits or elf hats. TheyÂ take the TOUCH program into CenterPointe Hospital and Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, too. "Kids are never afraid of Sasha, who's always been this gentle giant," Beth says. "And many adults just break down crying on her." Beth says she tells people to hug and love on Sasha as long as they want.

"HUGGING A DOG CAN BE SUCH A HEALING THING," SHE SAYS. "IT LOWERS PEOPLE'S BLOOD PRESSURE AND DECREASES ANXIETY, NOT TO MENTION THAT DOGS CAN BRING OUT THE INTERACTIONS FROM PEOPLE THAT THEY DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE SHARING WITH ANOTHER PERSON."

She says one memory stands out after she witnessed a boy who had been badly injured in an auto accident utter the word "dog" when he saw Sasha. She discovered that

was the first word the boy had whispered in a month, after the accident. Two weeks later, she says the boy could say Sasha's name during visits. When Sasha participates in the SDI Paws for Reading program in classrooms or libraries, Beth says Sasha gets lots of thank you letters. "Sasha's very well-known, " she says. "It's all about Sasha when we go anywhere!" Now 8 years old, Sasha was rescued by Beth from a puppy mill. She is a smaller Saint Bernard, who leans on everyone as her way of hugging. Another example of Sasha's beneficial outreach is a boy who was nonrespondent in his physical therapy sessions for his recovering legs. He did enjoy petting Sasha, so one day Beth suggested the boy take Sasha's leash and walk her through his therapy. She didn't know why surrounding nurses were crying at first until she learned that was the first time the boy had moved on his own power during therapy. Even young infants with tracheotomies lying in hospital beds kick their feet rapidly and enthusiastically when they spot Sasha. "I'm grateful to have a dog that can serve other people. We are blessed," says Beth, who also is a life coach. "I love animals and supporting people. Making a difference in someone's life makes me realize just how much these therapy dogs help people." Beth says Sasha knows exactly where there are hurting people when they enter places, and sometimes she has to pull her back. "She's very in tune, and will head straight to certain rooms," she says. IT'S A WRAP When planning to give cookies as holiday gifts, consider these tips for wrapping or packaging: • Stack cookies on themed drink coasters and wrap in cellophane or plastic wrap; secure them with ribbons. • Fill little compote or old-fashioned dishes with colorful shredded paper, top with small cookies and wrap in cellophane. Tie twine or a wide ribbon over the whole package. • Wrap up cookies like candy by stacking and rolling them tightly in cellophane, then securing both ends of the roll with some festive ribbon. • Fill mugs with cookies, cover top with cellophane and tie a ribbon through the mugs handle so an individual packet of cocoa can be secured to it. • Stack cookies in Mason jars. Place a little square of fabric between the lid and the ring before screwing it on, then finish with some ribbon and a festive tag.

hen national Cookie Exchange Week occurs December 4-8, will you make your favorite cookie recipes? Because cookies come in all flavors, shapes and sizes, it can become addictive to trade them.

While savoring cookies, here's some fun trivia to share: The English word "cookie" is derived from the Dutch word "koekje," which means little cake. Dutch bakers used to test oven temperatures on small amounts of batter, so they wouldn't waste the entire cake mix if the temperature wasn't right. It wasn't long before they discovered these tiny pieces of baked batter were actually quite tasty! Some folks have a hard time choosing just one holiday cookie recipe, so they make whole trays full of different ones. Selecting a favorite cookie wasn't hard for Carmen Mahoney, however, when she arrived in the United States from Romania. She says her favorite cookie is definitely chocolate chip with pecans. "We didn't have flat cookies in Romania—they were cream-based, more like pastries," she says. Carmen is so happy being around American-style cookies that she became the owner of Great American Cookies at Chesterfield Mall, 291 Chesterfield Center. 20

CHOCOLATE CHIP-PECAN COOKIES Makes about five dozen cookies

INGREDIENTS

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs 2 cups (12-ounce package) semi-sweet chocolate morsels1 cup chopped pecans

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. 2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and pecans. 3. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. 4. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

SLICE AND BAKE COOKIE VARIATION OF THIS RECIPE

1. Prepare dough the same as stated. Divide in half; wrap in waxed paper. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. 2. Shape each half into 15-inch log; wrap in wax paper. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat oven to 375 F. Cut into 1/2-inch thick slices; place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. 4. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. This dough may be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 8 weeks.
