The Yappy Howl-O-Ween Pawty

The Yappy Howl-O-Ween Pawty was held Oct. 14 at Eberwein Park in Chesterfield. Those attending with their dogs in costume were asked to bring a small donation (toys, dog or cat food, cat litter, etc.) to support Open Door Sanctuary. Treats Unleashed provided treats and other goodies for dogs.

The Annual Backstoppalooza Fundraiser Concert

This event was held at the Chesterfield Amphitheater. Members of the St. Louis County Police Pipe and Drum Corps, as well as 7 Bridges Band, performed. The event was presented by Hesse Martone, Mobile On the Run/Country Club Car Wash, Grey Eagle Distributing, Merrill Lynch, Budweiser Taste of St. Louis and the city of Chesterfield. Proceeds from Backstoppalooza supported Backstoppers. Backstoppers, Inc. is an organization that provides immediate financial aid and other support to the families of police officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty.

The announcement of the winning design is set for Dec. 15, and installation will be in April of 2017. The city of Chesterfield will provide up to $18,000 to the successful artist to fund the actual construction of the artwork.

PARKWAY WEST MIDDLE RANKED BEST MIDDLE SCHOOL IN STATE

Parkway West Middle School recently was named the top middle school in Missouri by StartClass. West Middle is located in Chesterfield and has 1,034 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Middle schools are ranked by their StartClass rating, which includes components such as exam passing rates (this includes math proficiency rates and reading and language arts proficiency rates over the last three years); school environment (the school environment score consists of factors such as the student-teacher ratio, teacher experience, and teacher absence rate; and disciplinary actions (this takes into account the school's retention rate, in-school suspension rate, and out-of-school suspension rate). MARQUETTE HIGH SCHOOL STEM LAB SOON TO DEBUT Next year, the students at Rockwood School District’s Marquette High will be learning in new STEM labs focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. his is definitely the easiest and best way to make rich-tasting butternut squash soup, without having to peel and dice a large,

awkwardly shaped vegetable. You start by cutting the squash in half lengthwise and roasting it in a hot oven. Scrape the roasted flesh from the skin, and simmer it with sautéed yellow onion, fresh sage, and a tart Granny Smith apple. When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream.

1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened,

and warm winter evenings. Pine cone fire starters get fires going quickly, and also add homey cheer to any living space simply as decoration.

WHAT THEY ARE

It's your regular, every day pinecone, found lying on lawns all over local neighborhoods, dipped in candle wax. A wick gets the wax burning quickly, which ignites the woody pinecone, and that helps kindling catch fire. Some folks dip the whole cone in the melted wax; others dip them partially. WHAT YOU’LL NEED

For basic supplies grab dry pine cones from your yard or a friend’s, paraffin wax and string. You should be able to obtain these supplies from craft stores, including pinecones if you don’t want to gather your own. The amount of wax you’ll use will depend on your pinecone size and the number of times they’re dipped. Plan to use two pounds of wax for dipping 10, 4” tall whole pinecones
