Kate Manz | kmanz@citylifestyle.com

Happy New Year! As we enter our ninth year of publishing Cherry Creek Lifestyle, I would like to take a moment to thank all of our advertising partners, whose continued support allows us to connect with this wonderful community. In 2023, we were able to feature over a dozen non-profit organizations, that may have not otherwise had a chance to get their message out to the masses. Some of the testimonials from these organizations, following the stories, have been remarkable. We are able to bring the GOOD NEWS to the community every month, because of the advertising support from the local businesses you see in our publication. Thank you, the resident readers, for continuing to support these businesses that allow us to do what we do. Likewise, if you know someone who is making a positive impact on the community, please share with us. Wishing you and your families health and prosperity in 2024

A Listener's Delight Exploring Denver's First Japanese-Style Listening Bar

If you’ve ever walked down Santa Fe Drive, you’ve probably passed the unassuming brick building that houses ESP HiFi, a music lovers paradise. Upon walking in you’ll be taken aback by the cozy wooden walls that are lined with seemingly endless amounts of vinyl records. Among the intimate conversations—old acquaintances as well as countless first dates— you will feel the music reverberating through the bar. The concept was inspired by Japanese Kissas, which are popular listening bars in Japan. The ‘HiFi’ moniker earns its title through the high-fidelity sound systems in which the music is played. ESP HiFi models itself after these experiences with an emphasis on Extra Sensory Perception or ESP. One of ESP’s founders, Mitchell Foster, felt this type of experience didn’t yet exist in Denver. “We were inspired by the listening bars in Japan. A place to sit quietly and listen to music did not really exist in the US at the time. We saw the need for a place like this in Denver so we created one,” Mitchell says. The bar gives you the opportunity to listen to co-owner, William Minter’s personal collection of records, “Music is selected by our staff from our record collection, about 1,000 records in total. There is no playlist. Staff are encouraged to read the room and make selections based on energy level, time of day, etc,” says Mitchell. “We cycle through music constantly and even sell some of our collection in our retail bins to fund new purchases.” The records are elevated with their uniquely designed sound system

which carries the music through the bar. “The sound system boasts 2 idler drive, Garrard 401 turntables, a Condesa rotary mixer, class A tube amplifiers and vintage Klipsch speakers. Without getting too technical, our equipment choices get us the most life-like sound possible. We want it to sound like the musicians are in the room with us. And I think we’ve gotten pretty close,” explains Mitchell. Co-founders Mitchell and William, as well as co-owner and general manager, Jordan Hubner, are consistently looking for ways to expand their music offerings. There is perhaps no better time to experience the music quality than during the designated “floating hours” where patrons are encouraged to minimize conversation and truly focus on the music. These hours are currently set from 12-3 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays and allow the listener to focus on the music with limited

interruptions, a rarity in the bar scene. They recently launched a new concept called "remote viewing" where, per Jordan, “…we bring the hi-fi system outside of the four walls of our bar, into unique spaces. We’ve been collaborating with art collectives, museums, hot springs and even more traditional events…”. Although the wide-ranging discography and high-quality sounds are the main focus of the bar, ESP HiFi also boasts a carefully curated assortment of Japanese whiskey, natural wines and cocktails as well as some small bites. “It's a magical space to take in music, relax and enjoy a good cocktail or glass of natural wine…” says Jordan. Swing by ESP HiFi for a unique Denver bar experience or check out one of their upcoming remote viewing events which occasionally includes a latenight dance party.

Eating for Your Dosha: Learning the Ayurveda Basics with Lentine Alexis

Ayurveda for Every Body As we enter a new year and think about ways in which we would like to know ourselves and care for ourselves better, we sometimes turn to new fads and trends to take our cues. For this interview, we went the opposite direction and spent some time learning about Ayurveda, an ancient system of therapies from the Indian subcontinent that has varied and evolved over more than two millennia. Lentine Alexis is a chef, athlete and Ayurvedic practitioner and she walks us through the basics and how this ancient wisdom can serve us in our modern lives.

PEOPLE TALK ABOUT DOSHAS. WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? WHAT IS A GOOD WAY TO LEARN WHICH TYPE ONE LEANS TOWARDS?

Our doshas are like a bioenergetic fingerprint. Our dosha represents the earth elements that are dominant in our mind, body and spirit, and they can act as a map for how we may be likely to respond to experiences, relationships, foods—anything we interact with in our lifetimes. The doshic explanation runs quite deep. Generally speaking, however, Vata dosha consists of air and ether, the qualities of which are rough, cold, light, mobile and subtle (balanced by smooth, warm, heavy, static and gross.) Creatives, athletes (particularly runners), and folx who love diversity, spontaneity and change are typically vata dosha dominant. Pitta is fire and water—oily, sharp, hot, light, fleshy smelling, spreading and liquid (balanced by dry, soft, cool, heavy and dense.) Driven professionals, organized entrepreneurs, athletes,

and folx who like lists, goal setting and achievement are typically pitta dominant. Kapha dosha is earth and water—steady, moist, smooth, oily, cool and heavy (balanced by mobile, dry, rough, warm and light). Those who dislike routine, are slow to make decisions and are unrushed by the world around them are typically dominant in this dosha. Most of us are dominant in two, rarely we’re tridoshic (which means we have an equal measure of all three.) It can be difficult to know which dosha you are (there’s a quiz on my website!) but in general we want to be watching for these qualities in ourselves—that’s really the litmus test. We all have all of the doshas.

WHAT ARE SOME BASIC EATING/COOKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EACH DOSHA?

This is a bit like taking a peek at the weather. We wouldn’t leave the house for the day without knowing what the weather CONTINUED >

mind, body and spirit would bring outside…we want to do the same inside. Understanding what our doshic constitution is can help us to determine what foods generally agree with us, and which don’t. But understanding how our beings are impacted by the world outside is just as important. We want to avoid foods that are similar in quality to the dosha that dominates our being. So, if you’re a vata, you’d want to avoid foods that are rough, cold, mobile, dry and subtle. (This would be smoothies, salads, snacks like popcorn and chips and the like.) As a pitta, you’d want to avoid hot and pungent foods, foods that warm the body too much. And as a kapha, you’d want to avoid cloudy, cold and heavy foods. Find a recipe for overnight oats for all doshas and learn more about Lentine and her offering at: LentineAlexis.com/Recipe/Overnight-Oats-For-Every-Dosha

Dialing In Brain Health CERESET® TAKES A NON-INVASIVE APPROACH TO MENTAL WELLNESS ARTICLE BY TONY FIRESTINE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER MACNIVEN

Within the world of mental wellness and brain optimization, many different innovative technologies have emerged, offering promising solutions for those seeking better mental health. Among these groundbreaking advancements is Cereset®, a pioneering approach rooted in brainwave optimization, designed to promote mental balance and well-being. Cereset® operates on the principle that the brain when in a balanced state, has the remarkable ability to regulate its functions. This innovative system doesn't rely on external substances or invasive procedures; instead, it leverages the brain's natural capacity for self-correction. Cereset® revolves around the individual's brain, allowing it to drive the normalization process. This individual-centric approach is instrumental, as it enables the brain to recognize and process

experiences seamlessly. Cereset® utilizes sensors to detect brain rhythms, translating these patterns into gentle sound tones that enable the brain to self-adjust, fostering a state of self-regulation and balance. “I usually tell people that it's like mirroring your brain back to itself,” says Gina Fontaine, client center manager at Cereset®'s Cherry Creek location. “It’s like if you’re stuck in between radio stations and you hear fuzz. That’s what we’re doing is tuning the brain so that it’s dialed in and focused.” Cereset® primarily focuses on addressing various mental health conditions and wellness goals, including sleep improvement, energy regulation, mood stability, stress management, cognition enhancement and even aiding individuals coping with long COVID symptoms such as brain fog. Clients have reported increased stress tolerance and improved responsiveness after sessions. The process is a unique and non-invasive experience. Users are comfortably seated in a chair equipped with sensors that detect and analyze their brainwaves. Through these sensors, Cereset® identifies and interprets the brain's specific patterns and frequencies. Once the brainwave patterns are recorded, Cereset® employs its technology to mirror and translate these patterns into micro-feedback. This feedback is delivered back to the brain in real-time through precise,

37

rhythmic tones. This process allows the brain to perceive its own activity, promoting a state of relaxation and enabling the brain to reset and self-optimize. Unlike traditional neurofeedback techniques that involve conscious effort or engagement, Cereset® operates in a passive, effortless manner. Clients simply relax—often falling asleep during the process—and let the technology facilitate the brain's natural ability to rebalance itself. At Cereset® ’s Cherry Creek location, technicians hold degrees in psychology, specializing in neuroscience, and undergo rigorous training through an extensive 120-hour program supervised by Cereset®'s Education and Client Services Director. There are numerous examples of Cereset® client success stories. Gina talks about a wellness coaching business owner who, after a ski accident, struggled with trauma and sleeplessness. A Cereset® Tune-Up session swiftly aided her brain in rebounding from the stress of the accident, facilitating her recovery and restoring her ability to sleep. Gina also gives the example of a client who had such intense nightmares stemming from traumatic stress that she was thrashing and continually giving herself bruises during her sleep. After going through just a few sessions, the client’s brain began to self-regulate and she was able to consistently sleep through the night. Gina compares proper maintenance to tuning up an instrument, like a piano, to achieve optimal results when you feel your brain isn’t performing at its optimum level. The frequency of recurring treatments varies, depending upon the individual needs of the client. Cereset® Cherry Creek also extends its commitment to mental health awareness beyond client services. They organize monthly Lunch and Learns on the third Thursday of each month, covering diverse topics like nutrition for brain support and stress impact on executive function, to educate the local community.

The upcoming topic for January 18 is “Reset Your Brain: How to Revolutionize Your Resolutions”. Online meditation sessions and yoga classes are also offered to promote mental wellness. ALCOHOL-FREE OPTIONS FOR DRY JANUARY

Over the last several years, “Dry January” has become an increasingly popular trend for folks wanting to start the year with a 31-day break from alcohol. Aside from the many health benefits, some simply see this as a test of willpower. In January 2023, I did a 30-day booze break of my own. After a few days, it’s surprising how simple grabbing a LaCroix or N/A beer can become, in lieu of the real thing. Granted, having a ribeye at Elway’s is not quite the same without a glass of Burgundy, but it is possible. Back in mid-September, I decided to take another 30-day alcohol break so that I could be sharp in closing out the business year. After four weeks, my productivity at work, patience with my kids and sleep quality were so improved that I kept it rolling. One month became two months, and the list of pros vs. cons was very lopsided. I’m not swearing off alcohol altogether, (I did enjoy some Elijah Craig 18-Year Bourbon over Thanksgiving with my brothersin-law) but this most recent hiatus has shown me a lot in regards to the physical and mental health benefits of keeping things in check. Everyone has their own journey, and the purpose of this story is to show some alternatives, so here we go! Untitled Art N/A Italian Pilsner is a crisp and refreshing brew that won’t have you feeling like you just slammed a Kombucha. An Italian Pilsner is a hoppier version of your standard Pilsner. My buddies and I love this brew! According to Untitled Art’s website, they use membrane filtration technology which allows them to brew fully-fermented beer and gently remove the alcohol, without losing the aromas and flavors of your favorite styles. All flavor, no alcohol!

While they are a Wisconsin brewery, they are available at most of the larger liquor stores in the area. My runner-up for the non-alcoholic beer category would probably be Colorado’s very own, Coors Edge. No frills and easy on the wallet. Cover your eyes, Bobby Stuckey! Luminara Red Blend is the first ever exquisitely crafted “alcohol removed” wine made from fruit grown in the prized Napa Valley region. I first tried this wine while dining at the Flagstaff House, and was genuinely impressed that there truly was oak on the palette, and it didn’t simply taste like over-priced grape juice.

Whether enjoying a meal or if you simply don’t want to drink a cold N/A beer, the Luminara Red Blend is a great substitute. Yes, there are some fantastic mocktails being made at Denver’s hottest restaurants and bars, but let’s be honest—how many $12 N/A drinks are you really going to order over the course of a night out? There is a reason why club soda, bitters and lime is the gold standard for me when it comes to N/A drinks. You don’t have to be a mixologist to make it at home, and the complexity of the bitters does make it feel like you are drinking something of sophistication.
