Touchdown!
Kate Manz | kmanz@citylifestyle.com
In December of 1991, the best video game in history was released, Super Tecmo Bowl. While there had been many football game predecessors, for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Tecmo Bowl was the first game to have every NFL team and use the real player’s names. Since this was pre-internet era, I honestly have no idea how excitement was built for its release, but at age fourteen, I was obsessed with getting this game. The house I grew up in was perfectly sized for our family, but certainly not considered large. This meant that there were only so many places my parents could hide presents, leading up to Christmas. As we grew older, the task of hiding gifts became more and more challenging for my folks. As the countdown to Christmas grew closer in 1991, I had a hunch that my parents had successfully secured Super Tecmo Bowl for me. I looked in all the usual hiding spots at home but to no avail. Finally, I found the treasure. Christmas was still two weeks away, and all I could think about was trampling defenders with Chiefs running back, Christian Okoye. I always considered myself an honest child, but one day, my curiosity got the best of me. The plan was simple; I would fake being sick on a school day so that I could play Super Tecmo Bowl while my parents were at work. The morning gameday arrived, I bamboozled my mom with some bellyaching in the morning. I’m sure a fake thermometer reading was also incorporated, but after thirty-two years, the details are hazy. The next step, opening the game’s packaging, required a bit more skill. I took a razor blade and carefully cut the cellophane in a way that I could slide the game out. That day, I played Super Tecmo Bowl for eight consecutive hours, then meticulously placed the game back in the packaging, taping the cellophane so that no trace of tampering was evident. I could have won an Oscar for my performance on Christmas morning. After ten years or so had passed, I did finally muster up the guts to tell my folks what I had done. Some may call my actions egregious, but I simply chalk it up to the magic of Christmas. We hope nothing but the best for you and your family this holiday season! Sincerely,

LOCAL OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST ARTICLE BY MEREDITH ROWE
Gift-giving and receiving is more than just a holiday tradition. By carefully choosing presents for those around you, you can use the end of the year to show them just how much you see and care for them. In fact, the act of reciprocating can actually strengthen bonds and increase a sense of community, which probably explains why it’s such a universal practice in our neighborhood, our city and well beyond our borders. It can also be universally overwhelming, even when you’re shopping for people you know really well. That’s why we compiled a list that’s full of instant classics for everyone on your list and maybe even a few things you
wouldn’t have thought to give as a gift, even if you saw them right at checkout. We’d also like to openly encourage you to browse the list with you in mind. If you see something you love, just circle it and leave it out as a sign from the universe for anyone in your life who might just need a little inspiration. As an added bonus, we focused our gift guide on a number of Denver-based favorites: HAVEN, BLOOM, Berkeley Supply Co, Alchemy, Modern Nomad and Miller Lane! So forget all about shipping fees, because this year we’re keeping it local for everyone on your list.

Before you proceed, we feel the need to warn you that these are not the stocking stuffers of your childhood. In fact, this roundup is potentially a bit more upscale than what your Santa used to bring you, and they may just ruin you for all the other standard go-tos. As such, we’re obsessed with each and every item. They encourage self-care and a moment of enjoyment in the everyday, so take this as a sign to grab one for you and for the stocking you’re filling. In fact, we might just have to recommend XL stockings this year! No matter what you pick for your nearest and dearest, we hope that your season is full of deep belly laughs, great food, better company and just one more hug before you go. Happy shopping and happy holidays!

“It feels like you’re off in the Connecticut countryside in the middle of Cherry Hills Village.” the Connecticut countryside in the middle of Cherry Hills Village,” says Josh. “Oftentimes what we run into is that people come in and have to take down trees to do landscaping. Step inside, and you'll discover a home that ties together timeless design with modern luxury. Meet Denver Artist Noelle Phares, Who’s Finding the Abstract in the West’s Changing Landscapes ARTICLE BY KATHERINE OWEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFER
For many artists, the call to create comes first—the medium and subject matter fall into place later. For Denver artist Noelle Phares, the arrival at a career as an artist took a different path. “By the time I decided to become an artist, it wasn't really because I thought, 'I have to be a painter,'” Noelle explains. “It was more a feeling of, ‘God, I love the natural world.’” Noelle’s work, which draws on paints, pastels, inks, pencils and sometimes even thread to capture entrancing scenes of nature, meditates on “the ever-encroaching presence of humanity into previously pristine open spaces.” Take for example her piece, “Phantom Limb,” in which she portrays a glacial landscape in Alaska that’s quickly changing due to climate change; the piece begins with a palette of warm oranges, pinks, and periwinkle—colors Noelle draws, very technically, from the way “light refracts off of snowy surfaces.” Then, she introduces an abstraction of architecture to reference the human footprint. “The periwinkle tones of the piece draw the viewer in, as the glow of a snowy landscape really would. I typically paint about landscapes that are vulnerable, and in this piece, the major negative impact of climate
change is glacial melt, so I wanted to symbolize that without painting it too literally,” Noelle explains. “Here, I used a cluster of lines as a nod to the downward flow of melt—they did the job of introducing that symbology while also serving as an interesting design feature that contrasts with the organic shapes of the mountains. I like to use abstract shapes and features that resemble architectural lines as nods to the human footprint on that landscape, instead of presenting these themes directly. First and foremost, the painting should be beautiful, and secondarily it should invite the viewer to ask deeper questions about what’s really going on with that specific terrain." “I tend to use palettes that are rooted in the natural tones of the landscape itself but also draw on the emotion that I want the viewer to feel as they look at the painting,” Noelle continues. “For example when I want the viewer to feel nostalgic, I introduce a lot more haze and atmospheric colors than I would in a painting that I want the viewer to feel like they are in now, in which the colors would probably be bolder and the lines harder.” Noelle’s abstract but highly analytic approach makes sense with her professional background; she holds an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and a master's in CONTINUED >

environmental data science. Before a leap of faith into full-time artistry, she spent ten years working in tech and thinking about landscapes as geospatial data sets. Throughout that time, painting was something Noelle did for fun but didn’t see as a career path. “I just didn't have anyone in my life who was a working artist,” Noelle explains. “My academic focus was always on the sciences. I wanted to learn about the building blocks of life and those topics demanded my full attention through my twenties. I felt as if I needed to understand how the universe worked before deciding how I would leverage that information in my career later on.” But after a decade, Noelle reports the office atmosphere, computer screens and “abstract techie

someone wearing a pair of skis that I've designed. That's happened twice, so it doesn't happen that much,” Noelle laughs. “But when it did, I thought, 'Dang, that's pretty cool.'” Yet still, one of the greatest changes in her art career so far, attests Noelle, has been becoming a parent. She and her husband welcomed a daughter in early 2023, and it opened a whole new set of questions for her to explore in her work. “A lot of people told me that having a kid would change my perspective for the better. And I just didn't know how to believe them, because you just don't know what you don't know,” Noelle says. “I wasn't someone who had a strong vision about who I would be as a parent, but luckily those people were right. Having a child has absolutely underscored how important it is to me to make sure that she has clean air to breathe and water to drink. And maybe even mountains that she can go back to where she doesn’t have to hear the sound of a road.” To learn more about Noelle, visit her website at NoellePhares.com or find her on Instagram at @ noellephares. work” wore on her: “I kind of threw up my hands one day, feeling that this is just not what I am.” So she made the leap. Today, her art can be found not just on the walls of galleries and collectors’ homes but on skis, SmartWool socks, Merrell gear, beer cans, wine bottles and more. SẮP SỬA DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM THE TRADITIONAL WITH A MODERN TAKE ON VIETNAMESE CUISINE

Since they opened this past June, sap sua, on East Colfax in Denver, has offered a unique and contemporary dining experience showcasing the diverse and engaging flavors of Vietnam through the lens of a first-generation Vietnamese American. Chefs Ni and Anna Nguyen strive to present a wide range of elements of Vietnamese cuisine to their community with their non-traditional food. Chef Ni describes his drive to include these aromas and flavors into Denver’s culinary canon by bringing up his experiences eating the same food growing up and possibly getting teased by his fellow classmates at lunchtime. “If I can get them to understand what
fermented shrimp paste is, or what fish sauce is; the ingredients that we use in our daily lives,” Ni says. “Then, maybe in the future, stinky lunch boxes—like when I was growing up—won’t be a thing anymore, if we can expose more people to Vietnamese food.” What finally came to fruition as a brick-and-mortar space this past June, had been percolating for over ten years, ever since the Nguyens met in culinary school. With both chefs previously working in a varied range of high-profile restaurants and cuisines in the Los Angeles area, Ni decided to hone his focus on the traditions he loved and learned about, growing up as a first-generation CONTINUED >

Vietnamese American. After both were unfortunately furloughed during the pandemic, they landed in Anna’s hometown of Longmont and plotted to do something of their very own. What started as a holiday-focused pastry business turned into evenings making traditional Vietnamese takeout out of the kitchen of a brunch-only restaurant. The popularity of the temporary takeout kitchen soon grew into featured pop-ups at some of Denver’s most beloved restaurants which, in turn, led to the inception of sap sua. With their own space, they weren’t bound by limitations and could build a menu and concept from the ground up, focusing on their unique perspective. The nuance and refinement of French tradition and the balance and intensity of Vietnamese flavors are all evident in the cuisine at sap sua. Dishes like “trung và trung”; a soft scrambled egg with brown butter, fish sauce and trout roe on pillowy white rice, and "bap cai luoc"; a generous portion of tender and charred cabbage over a luxurious egg yolk sauce topped with crisp anchovy breadcrumbs, display both comfort and luxury. The latter has become one of sap sua’s signature dishes. “Growing up my mom would make a version of this. It’s a really humble dish,” says Ni. “If you grew up in a Vietnamese household, I’m sure someone in your family cooked a version of this dish.” The result is a harmony of hearty, rustic, and lavish. Our server mentions that she didn’t know a cabbage dish could be sexy until she experienced this particular version. With Chef Anna at the pastry helm, the desserts are not to be missed. A coconut panna cotta with lychee, longan fruit, and almond granita achieves an incredibly uniform balance while still maintaining the CONTINUED >

ability to pinpoint distinct flavors. In contrast, “chè chuoi”, a rich banana pudding with coconut, peanuts and nilla wafers leaves you wanting to take a bowl home for the next morning’s decadent breakfast. In November, they launched a Saturday and Sunday bakery concept to showcase Anna's family recipes and passion for baking: The Bakehouse by sap sua. An inaugural Lunar New Year celebration is also on the horizon on February 10, featuring a takeover with Chef Kevin Tien of Moon Rabbit in Washington, DC. While Ni and Anna are the owner/chefs of sap sua, Chef Ni describes the pride he takes in teamwork and collaboration in the kitchen. “One of our goals is to get everyone in the kitchen to have a dish on the menu,” says Ni. “One of my favorite things is to be able to cultivate that creativity.” A commitment to collaboration is underlined by including the entire staff’s names on the bottom of the menu, which is usually only reserved for the executive chef. The front-of-house team, led by General Manager Heeji Kim, leads guests through a bespoke and curated experience, leaning towards sharing so diners can experience the breadth of what sap sua has to offer. The wine and cocktail lists mirror the balance and creativity that the food menu emanates. “I think if people come in with an open mind,” says Ni. “Just come in and let us take care of you and let us guide you through the menu and what we’re excited about.” Visit SapSua.com to make a reservation.

Giving Campaign

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
