If you could bottle happiness, what would it look like? What color would it be? What would it smell like? Mine would look like some kind of rainbow-infused gas that would whirl and bubble over when you popped the cap like an at-home dry ice volcanic explosion. And the smell would run like a movie trailer of all my favorite aromas—suntan lotion, perfumes, fresh-cut herbs, the forest after a hard rain, and marinara bubbling on the stovetop. But before you can claim something makes you happy, you have to try it first, right? In this month's issue, we take a look at things to explore. How lucky we are to live in a state that's bursting with bustling, hard-working small businesses and miles and miles of wildlife. I'm regularly—simultaneously—adding to and crossing off a never-ending list I have going. New restaurants to hit, concoctions to whip up in the kitchen, trails to hike, parks to picnic at, artist's work to experience, books to read, musicians to dance to, cocktails to sip, chocolate to devour. In the pages to come, there's something for everyone to explore. Whether that's venturing out on a Saturday to wander less-traveled paths in neighboring towns or rounding up the kids at home to create a project on rainy spring afternoons. This May, I invite you to explore more. Inhale deeply, celebrate spring and find more happiness. Keep On Keepin’ On

“We just completed a new build with Haley, and can’t recommend them enough. Their overall build process along with a dedicated site manager & project manager help ensure things go smoothly. The close coordination between the architect, builder, and subs allowed for an efficient build which took a lot of stress off my wife and I. As issues arose during construction they were handled quickly and fairly to keep things on track, and Dan and team continue to help resolve the inevitable remaining tweaks after move in. Would hire Haley again in a second!”

MADÉ Tattoo and Mercantile As an interdisciplinary artist with experience in photography, mural painting and printmaking, tattooing is just another medium for Chloé Besson to express herself through. She not only focuses on bridging the gap between fine art and tattooing but providing inclusivity and comfort for clients. “My whole business is based on showing up differently in the world of tattooing by intentionally creating a loving and pleasurable experience,” Chloé says. Once she’d committed to teaching herself tattooing in 2019 and spending the following year in a private Boulder studio, Chloé knew she’d open her own shop. Last June, Chloé launched MADÉ, a curated tattoo studio and mercantile store displaying artistic home goods and boutique items for sale at Denver’s 4414 Yates Street. She and three other

tattoo artists work out of the earth-toned space, which also hosts pop-ups and community events. With scheduling that fills up a month’s worth of appointments in minutes, Chloé recently took a month-long break from tattooing to recover from burnout. “The act of tattooing itself and holding space for someone while piercing their skin is really fulfilling and can be draining,” Chloé says. To continually provide her best for clients, Chloé encourages herself and other tattooers to create intention around worklife balance and take breaks from their practice. Chloé openly shares about her process online to give her clients the best possible experience, one in a space for all bodies to feel welcome, seen and comfortable in.

LOVE SARO With sculptor Carol Ritter for a mother and a father in the boutique real estate business, it’s no wonder Sacha Jarmon crafted a career in making jewelry that led to her opening permanent, custom-fit jewelry boutique LOVE SARO with her mom in 2020. “Permanent jewelry is the most sustainable piece you’ll ever buy,” says Sacha, who has her A.J.P. certification from the Gemological Institute of America, of her custom, precious metal accessories. LOVE SARO’s necklaces, bracelets and anklets, which are most often made with recycled sterling silver or solid 14 karat gold, last a lifetime. At appointments and private events, Sacha and her team take a client’s measurements, then let them create a truly customized piece before welding a chain together around the body, without a clasp, and with a perfect fit.

30

I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + CULTURE

LOVE SARO’s custom jewelry resides at a somewhat hidden, “please don’t tell” location in Boulder. With a temporary studio at 2702 E. 3rd Avenue in Cherry Creek North, LOVE SARO will move to a second permanent home down the street this summer. Their appointment-only studios display Carol’s sculptures, as well as expertly curated vintage clothing by OnBeatVintage. The mother-daughter duo began the business, in part, to keep each other motivated to create at the start of the pandemic. That, and out of the desire for human connection, to work with clients to design a personalized piece through the intimate creation experience, often a commemoration or celebration, associated with permanent jewelry. Ignite Your Aura 32

I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + CULTURE

During a decade-long photography career, Corinna Lander took many people’s pictures, especially women, who felt uncomfortable posing for the camera. To help reveal these subjects’ true selves, Corinna and Matt Sudowski, life partners before they began a business together, started Ignite Your Aura last March. The two offer aura photography sessions with a color guide, along with reiki and massage therapy services. At private events and pop-up locations in the greater Denver area, Corinna and Matt provide a photography experience where “science meets woo,” Corinna says. Bioelectric feedback technology reads the subject’s heartbeat and body temperature, sending outputs to an AuraCam 6000 that translates those energies into color. “Every human knows how to feel energy,” Corinna says. It’s easy to sense someone’s mood when they enter a room. Corinna and Matt expand on that during readings, connecting with a subject by interpreting their aura. “Auras can change over time,” Corinna says, “which makes this a fun activity to see where you’re at transitionally.” Because auras aren’t permanent, Corinna and Matt interpret them through how the body’s energy can inspire new perspectives or lifestyle shifts.

Dana Rodriguez’s Cantina Loca Spices Up LoHi

When she asked me for a suggestion as to where she should first meet the guy she’d been talking to on a dating site, I suggested Cantina Loca. Top-notch food and drink, a fun vibe, plus it’s affordable; a first date no-brainer. She gets there, they have a drink, talk some, and then, when the server came to take their dinner order, the guy bolted. Said he didn’t see a future and took off. She was stunned, but settled up the tab and then went to her car. As anyone who’s ever looked for love on the Internet knows, there are a lot of bad first dates. My neighbor has been on all of them. And so, acutely feeling the stinging disappoint of yet another one, she cried. She sat in her car outside Cantina Loca and cried. But my neighbor is a smart woman. She still wanted to eat Dana’s al pastor Colorado lamb and queso fundido, and so she pulled herself together and marched right back into Cantina Loca to get the dinner she’d been looking forward to. Her table, however, had already been filled, and now they were on a wait. They don’t normally do takeout orders when they’re busy—they know and respect their limits so as to keep up quality—but the host took a look at her puffy eyes and heartbroken (about the food; not the guy) expression and said, “We can do it. What would you like?” One bite into the dry-spiced, beef cheek barbacoa taco and her hope was returning. Two bites in and her heart was healed. This is exactly what Cantina Loca is. There’s care in every aspect of the restaurant, from the uncompromising recipes that Dana creates based on the Mexican food she grew up eating, to the prime ingredients they use, to the people who work there. It’s a restaurant full of care, but it’s also a restaurant full of fun. Cocktails have clever names like the Perra Basica (look up the translation), a take on the margarita made with Dana’s own tequila

38

brand, Doña Loca, because yes, she also has her own tequila brand. And the Oaxacan on Sunshine, a blend of tea-infused mezcal, aperitivo, sweet vermouth, and Aztec chocolate bitters. The space is anchored by a lavender flowered Jacaranda tree, and traditional mezcal cups make up the light fixtures. It’s not a huge space, but it feels roomy because of its separate eating areas in the main space, at the bar, in a sectioned off dining area, and on the patio. If you’ve been to Work & Class or Super Mega Bien, Dana’s other two Denver restaurants, you already know the food is going to be great. Cantina Loca’s menu is Dana’s take on Mexico City street food, and it’s divided up into snackies, tacos, shareables and sweets. Highlights include that heart-healing barbacoa taco, the charcoal tempura-fried cactus with chipotle aioli dipping sauce and the red chile pollo adobado served with all the fixings. There’s nothing too fancy, but that’s the point. It’s designed to be an everyday restaurant, where you can enjoy good food and drinks for your real life. Which sometimes includes bad dates. Cantina Loca: 2890 Zuni St., Denver, 303.284.6738, cantinaloca.com

Food isn’t the only thing Dana Rodriguez, aka Loca, is passionate about. The woman loves herself a good pour of tequila and mezcal, and so she set out to make the best. Meet Doña Loca tequilas and mezcals, traditionally-made, additive-free spirits in three expressions each. Taste it for yourself in one of Cantina Loca’s cocktails, then buy it at your favorite local liquor store and make her New Old Oaxacan at home. donaloca.com

HOME BUILDING REINVENTED ARTICLE BY LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HALEY CUSTOM HOMES

Step Into a Haley Custom Homes Project Made Through Efficiency and Collaboration

Reinvention has been a resonant theme for Dan Fuller, owner and principal at Haley Custom Homes, throughout his career. From dabbling in high-end residential construction during his time working in the radio industry to today, as he uses his trademarked system to maximize the efficiency and quality of his company’s home projects, Dan has utilized his background as an entrepreneur and a developer to redefine the custom home-building experience. Dan began building in 1998 with the goal of creating unmatched experiences and end products for his clients. However, Dan found many traditional custom home-building processes to be unconducive to this goal. In 2014, he reinvented his business to address the challenges and frustrations that he was experiencing. “I leaned on my skill sets from my previous professional life managing multiple radio stations, which are based in technology, operational systems and efficiencies,” says Dan. “I took a year off from building and created the Accelerated Precision Build (APB) System™, which addresses building issues such as budgeting, scheduling and the punch list process.”

It’s a progressive approach focused on eliminating waste, reducing build times and optimizing efficiency that Dan notes has been validated time and time again. He says that this has been especially true over the past two years since the onset of the pandemic, as extenuating and uncontrollable circumstances have posed persistent problems for the construction industry. Combined with the inimitable service that the Haley Custom Homes team provides, emphasizing personal connections and impeccable attention to detail, the company has become a sterling standard of boutique home-building on the Denver luxury real estate scene. This reputation for immense quality and concierge-level service is especially evident in one of Haley Custom Homes’ recent Denver area projects. A new build that checks in at 8,500 square feet with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, it is a bright, luminous home that is the result of extensive collaboration between the homeowners and the Haley Custom Homes team. “The homeowners were looking for a farmhouse with a modern feel,” says Dan. “Two main emphases were a pool house and a full kitchen to accommodate gatherings of their children and friends.”

“My favo ri te pa r t of t h i s pro je c t wa s th e relat i o n s hi p b u i l t wi th t he ho me own ers .”

The home’s façade brilliantly blends natural approachability and sleek modern style. French hardwood floors run throughout, and the abode is anchored by its stunning great room. Laid out in an open floorplan, the room combines the kitchen, dining and living areas all under a vaulted tongue and groove ceiling with beautiful exposed beams that add depth and an elevated level of farmhouse luxury. The kitchen is pristine with bright cabinetry, an island with bar-level seating and a unique plaster hood accent stretching to the ceiling. The living room includes a welcoming fireplace with custom steel surrounds. Abundant sunlight spills into the entire area through tall windowed doors that lead to the outdoor living area, another site of focus for the homeowners. The pool house incorporates modified garage doors on its entire south side to create an indoor-outdoor feel with the resplendent patio and pool deck, which is ideal for both quiet relaxation and lively gatherings. Allowing the outdoors in through extensive windows is a theme throughout the home, including in the primary bathroom in which the natural light illuminates the pristine tiling and standalone soaking tub. Eyecatching light fixtures are also sprinkled throughout the home, including the luxe farmhouse fixtures of the kitchen and the unique, exposed bulb fixtures of the primary bathroom. From the home’s beautiful natural materials, including weathered barnwood and limestone, to its gleaming modern touches, it is a property that wonderfully blends comfortable farmhouse living with the immense luxury of the abodes that Haley Custom Homes is known for creating. For Dan, it is an example of quality, efficiency and personability—the last of which is often his favorite element of a given project. “My favorite part of this project was the relationship built with the homeowners,” says Dan. “They were wonderful collaborators, and we all had a lot of fun with this project.” HaleyCustomHomes.com

SPRING CLEANING TACTICS ON HOW TO MINDFULLY SORT AND DONATE YOUR OLD AND HAPPILY KEEP ALL THAT MAKES YOU MERRY

Can a clean home really welcome in more energy that ripples into other aspects of your life? We chat with home organizing expert Kate Englebrecht, of Home Love Method in Denver, to learn how to keep your space in order well past this spring.

YOU USE THE MARIE KONDO METHOD, RIGHT? Yes, you tidy by category, starting with clothes, followed by books, paper, miscellaneous—which is the kitchen, bathroom, electronics, etc.—and ending with sentimental items. You don’t keep things out of guilt or obligation - you want your things to support the life you’re living; you want to be surrounded by joy!

ORGANIZING AN ENTIRE HOUSE CAN FEEL OVERWHELMING! WHERE DO YOU RECOMMEND PEOPLE START? Start in your closet. We begin and end our day in our clothes, so we are most familiar with this category. Clothing is representative of how we wish to be seen in the world. If you have a lot of clothes that you don’t like, then this could color your mood and attitude; if you have very few clothes then maybe you have a minimalist mindset. Most of my female clients at the beginning of tidying clothes say they have nothing to wear and at the end, they feel like they have more choices than they did when we started. Isn’t that crazy? They have less clothing, but they have more choices!

WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT TIDYING UP? The most important thing I want them to know is that there’s freedom in letting things go. You'll have a fresh outlook on life and you'll have the energy and inspiration to keep your home tidy. This newly found energy and inspiration will then spill over into other parts of your life as well. There’s nothing like it! HomeLoveMethod.com

For Crafty Makers Founded by Delanie Holton-Fessler nearly eight years ago, Craftsman & Apprentice was created to build community through tactile projects and activities. Delanie notes that this project is one of her most popular—a Creative Build-Play activity that empowers kids to use their imaginations, solve problems and express their personalities through the creation of their own one-of-a-kind toy. BUILD A JUNK ROBOT Activity by: Craftsman & Apprentice Recommended Age: 3+ with adult support, 5-11 independent Materials: • 8 Pieces of Scrap Wood (Size accordingly to use for the robot’s head, body, arms, legs and feet) • 2 Screws • Screwdriver • Sandpaper • Safety Glasses • Wood Glue • Junk Parts

Instructions: • Safety First! Gather your materials and put on your safety glasses. Set up in a place with plenty of space and where making a mess is okay. • Step 1: Sand Using sandpaper, sand each piece of wood until it’s smooth, paying extra attention to the scruffy areas. • Step 2: Attach Using a screwdriver, twist one screw into each of the robot’s arms, then attach the arms to the body. • Step 3: Glue Using wood glue or a glue gun, build your robot from the bottom up in a standing position. Allow the glue to dry. • Step 4: Decorate and Activate Glue various pieces of junk to your robot. Think about how the junk can help give your robot personality and super skills! Ideas for junk items to use include cardboard pieces, plastic lids, egg carton pieces, corks and bottle caps. You can also use markers or paint to decorate your robot. • Step 5: Clean Up and Play Clean up your work area and store any leftover materials. Then take your new robot friend out into the world to play! Note: This project includes real tools and materials. Make at your own risk. Safety glasses and adult supervision are highly recommended.

For Little Maestros Accomplished singer Dana Vachharajani founded Dana V Music in 2005 to help students of all ages embark on and excel in their musical journey. Dana notes that musical activities such as the following help teach mindfulness and attentiveness while fostering creativity. And, in short, creating sounds is just plain fun! MAKE A WATER XYLOPHONE Activity by: Dana V Music Recommended Age: All ages Instructions: 1. Collect household glasses. To create an octave, collect eight of the same glasses. However, feel free to experiment with different sizes of glasses if you’d like. 2. Fill each glass with water to different levels. The lower the level of the water, the higher the pitch will be. Tune the “xylophone” to scale (some patience required!) or play around with different pitches. 3. Tap the glasses lightly with a metal spoon to hear the different pitches you’ve created. Play around with creating your own tunes and songs by exploring the different pitches of each water glass. Tip: Play some of your favorite music in the background to tap along to!

For Budding Chefs Food Lab opened in 2015 with a mission to help people bond over the common language of food. Founder Casey Easton hopes that by exposing kids to the wonders of cooking at a young age, they can learn the fun, magic and community that food provides. And they can start with this unique recipe, which Casey notes is a consistent hit for kids and adults alike! SCALLION PANCAKES Activity by: Food Lab Recommended Age: 5+ with adult support Ingredients: • 1 cup flour • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp sesame oil • ½ cup hot water • 4 scallions, sliced • Oil for cooking • Soy sauce for dipping Instructions: 1. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well and add the sesame oil, then stir in water. Knead until a dough forms. Add more water if necessary. Wrap in plastic and let rest for 20 minutes. 2. Cut dough into four pieces. On a floured work surface, roll dough into a thin circle and sprinkle with sliced scallion. Roll dough into a long rope, then coil the rope by taking the short end and rolling it towards the opposite short end (so that it looks like a spiral). Using a rolling pin, roll coiled dough out into a disc. 3. Heat oil in a pan and pan fry scallion pancake until browned, then flip to cook the second side. Repeat with remaining pancakes and serve with soy sauce.
