recycled materials. It’s the perfect illustration of what being “Eco” is all about. Brittni says, “I was originally drawn to Paul Wonner’s work because of his use of dramatic shadows. I love to draw inspiration or ‘recycle’ ideas from other art mediums. Inspiration is just creative recycling. Taking an idea or theme you love and spinning it into your own piece.” Nikki Malloy also contributed to the Eco theme by styling something beautiful out of something used. “I used cans and bottles from food and drinks we had used in my kitchen as flower

Bringing a new life to something that has already had life is so special. Not only is it unique, but it also has a positive impact on the environment.” With that note, we can use that mentality of recycling in many facets of life. From creating new ideas or recycling old ones, there’s potential for change everywhere.

Stocked announced on March 5th, 2019, its pantry-building service aimed at helping women and families save money on their monthly grocery bill and invest the savings. The service costs $99 for a two-hour session and includes a pantry diagnostic, market tour, prep of a special pantry staple, investment sign up, and ongoing tips, recipes and encouragement. Says founder Kate Lacroix, “As a lifelong home cook, I’m convinced high grocery bills are keeping women from financial solvency. I intended to change this one pantry at a time." Stocked will initially serve the Front Range area with hopes for regional/national expansion in the next year. Clients can expect to save $100/month per family member. Meaning, a family of four can

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS CENTRAL TO OUR STORY IS REALLY THIS PASSIONATE IDEA LAUREN HAD BASED ON HER UPBRINGING IN NEW ORLEANS
running their exciting new business, and after their kids are put to bed. This is the story of the Boulder-based canned cocktail brand,
Cocktail Squad: After an exemplary $6 cocktail, Lauren asked the bartender for the recipe. $103 later, she believed there was a way to bring a convenient and relaxing experience to life for others. Six years later, another side to an already successful partnership
of marriage and friendship has blossomed. DID YOU TWO ALWAYS WANT TO GO INTO BUSINESS TOGETHER? DID YOU STUMBLE INTO IT? Lauren: I would say we absolutely stumbled into it. We had zero dreams or plans to work together. We got married pretty quickly, had one child, then very quickly had three, and then four. That was our version of working together. John: We had three kids in 20 months and four years later had another child. We had been working together for a long time, but not in business. JOHN, YOU FOUNDED WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS BOULDER CANYON POTATO CHIPS AND HAVE SEVERAL YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE NATURAL FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY. LAUREN, YOU WERE AN INVESTMENT BANKER IN NEW YORK AND RUN YOUR OWN INTERIOR DESIGN COMPANY FOR THE PAST DECADE—HOW DO THESE PIECES EQUATE TO A CANNED COCKTAIL COMPANY? John: One of the things that is central to our story is really this passionate idea Lauren had based on her upbringing in New Orleans and our life being about celebration and balance and good times. We’ve raised four children, we’ve been married 17 years, and we’ve certainly helped each other with our businesses before. I’ve been in the natural food and beverage industry launching businesses and running brands for 25 years—this is right up my alley. Obviously, you know each other’s strengths and how you can work together. I think our skill sets allow us to bring the best of what we can bring to the business. We’re not duplicating efforts either. Lauren: We both have been entrepreneurs along the way but in different industries. I started a small interior design business that I grew over the years. I was a self-starter in that way and self-taught in design and built up a robust business. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT ONE ANOTHER SINCE STARTING COCKTAIL SQUAD? John: Lauren’s a resilient woman anyway, she’s got four children, but there’s a lot of learned resilience around being an entrepreneur on a daily basis; when you’re wearing a lot of hats and like her, you’re able to do a lot of things, but also really starting to be able to parse out the daily stress with what’s important. At the end of the day, we’re not selling nuclear war triggers, but there is a lot of highs and lows, often before noon. It’s part of being an entrepreneur, where something goes right, and something doesn’t. We also have a great investor base. People have really responded, and not just to my background; it’s been more about this passionate founder named Lauren. They’ve

decided that’s really what they want to invest in, and have invested in us together. That’s been great to see: People giving Lauren the respect as well.

WE’RE BOTH USED TO THAT SCRAPPY ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT. Lauren: I’d say that over the last 17 years, I’ve heard people working with John compliment him and his work ethic, and now I’m witnessing it firsthand. I have gained a newfound respect for my husband, who stays very even through the rollercoaster of growing a new brand. I’ve heard how people outside our family respect him for his business, and I’m seeing that as a business partner now, not just as his wife. WOULD YOU TRADE THIS EXPERIENCE FOR ANYTHING ELSE? Lauren: I would say absolutely not. This is the life I’ve been leading ever since I’ve met John, and how I feel about this company is I am giving it my everything because I believe in it so much that I have literally just jumped into the fire, ready for anything. I wouldn’t change that for the world. It’s exciting, it’s rewarding, and I feel that as a female founder, it’s super important to show my children that if you truly believe in something, it’s up to you to make it happen. John: I don’t know what will define success for us—we’re very early in the business, obviously— but for sure, I do feel like it’s a success. We’ve put a ton of time and energy and love into this business, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. You’ve got to be both feet in with something like this anyway.

WITH DENVER-BASED FACTOR DESIGN BUILD, YOUR DREAM HOME IS WITHIN REACH—WHETHER OR NOT YOU’RE EXACTLY SURE WHAT YOU WANT. For Co-owner Josh Fiester, that’s an essential aspect of the business. “All my experience over the years has taught me that the most important skill thing you can have is to bring someone else’s vision to reality for them,” Josh says. “The designers who work for Factor are incredible at extracting that vision, and our clients don’t need to know anything, they don’t even really need to know their tastes. They can even know something they don’t like, and we can take it from there.” Factor Design Build will take your redesign from start to finish with expert project managers overseeing the process every step of the way. “We try to move the guys around so that the clients are getting the best people for their phase,” Josh says. “We have a diverse set of skills, and we try to be experts in our small fields. You can’t be general experts.” With Factor Design Build’s team, every detail of a renovation is taken into account— whether you’re doing a full rebuild or just redoing a few rooms. That’s an important detail for Josh, whose team focuses not only on creating a beautiful final result but also on the function of each space for the owners and their families. “We focus on how an individual client needs their space to function,” Josh says. “Everything we do is custom. We don’t build spec homes, and we don’t focus on fix and flips, we’re doing things for people in their homes, to improve the quality of their lives.” CONTINUED >

E AT I N G M I N D F U L LY THREE DIFFERENT TAKES ON THE WORLD OF FACTORY FARMING
“MINDFULNESS” IS ONE OF THOSE BUZZWORDS THAT’S SLAPPED ONTO EVERYTHING FROM RELAXATION PODCASTS TO ADVERTS FOR YOGA STUDIOS, ALL OF WHICH PROMISE MORE PEACE IN OUR FRANTIC WORLD. Apart from the advertisement campaigns, the idea of mindfulness—which originates in Buddhist meditation practices—is fairly simple: be here now. When we apply mindfulness to our bodies, several questions arise: Are we being compassionate with the parts of our bodies that work hard every day to sustain us? Are we honoring our bodies’ needs, which are often separate from what our minds desire? In short, are we treating our bodies like temples? And then, because we don’t live in a vacuum, there’s the larger question: Are we living synergistically with the world around us? There’s been an uptick in conversations in the nutrition world about mindfulness. Nutritionists who employ this approach shift focus from anything diet related onto more holistic practices like listening to your body when it’s full, eating when your body sends hunger signals and developing healthy eating environments (i.e., cultivating eating habits like sitting at a table for a meal, as opposed to multitasking while eating or grazing mindlessly throughout the day). Another essential aspect of mindful eating is considering where your food comes from. Since we’re long separated from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and especially since the advent of supermarkets in the 1930s, we’ve become increasingly disconnected from our food.

While Chook Charcoal Chicken specializes in, well, chicken, they boast a vegetable-forward menu whose overall practices are more sustainable (e.g., compostable takeaway containers and food that’s sourced more compassionately). Adam is fully invested in reforming legislation so that farmers can survive in this modern industrialized world.

He’s dedicated to responsible, sustainable approaches—from the soil to the folks working at the co-op he sources from. He advised, “Know where your food comes from and support farmers and ranchers to build the soil rather than perpetuate the cycle.” Applying mindfulness to what we eat has positive impacts not only on the microcosmic self—body and even mind—but, arguably more importantly, the environment. As we see the effects of climate change develop around us, our everyday choices truly do matter. 38

EDIE URE’S USE OF COLOR AND HOW SHE USES FLOWERS AND COMPOST TO GET THERE.
ARTICLE KATE MANZ | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.
INDIGO SHIBORI IS OUR SPRING CRUSH THIS SEASON. The pattern making technique first arose from Japan and Africa centuries ago, and uses wood blocks and intricate folds, clamps and binds to create resist patterns in the fabric. “It is essentially grown up tie-dye,” says Edie Ure, a Boulder artist and designer. Ure, who has worn many hats in the fashion industry, now spends her days as a natural dye artisan and owner of an eponymous interior brand who works with other designers such as Ryan Roche, FairEnds and Garza Marfer (to name a few). Ure gave us a peek at what the Shibori process is like, and filled us in on her life as an artist and embracing natural elements in design.

ARTIST’S PALETTE
(CON TI N U ED)
DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR ART PRACTICE AND YOUR BACKGROUND. I am a native Londoner, and after graduating in fashion and textiles from Central St Martins, I worked as a designer in Milan, Paris and then New York working at Ralph Lauren Home. Later, I owned a couple of businesses, one print design company which enabled me to create prints for many major New York brands from Ralph Lauren to Calvin Klein, GAP Ulla Johnson, and Tocca. Before moving to Colorado, I owned a children's wear label, which I co-designed with Ulla Johnson. My ex-husband's job brought us to Boulder, and we moved to Colorado very suddenly. At the time I had never lived anywhere so un-urban, I was more about human nature than nature. It is quite the opposite now. After I moved to Boulder, I took a step away for a few years because I had two young kids and there wasn't really a fashion industry here. It gave me a chance to absorb where I was living; the mountains and the remote and wild places in Colorado. I wanted to communicate that through my work and coming back to textiles was a very natural step for me. I now work as a natural dye artisan sustainably dyeing textiles for apparel/interior designers, and I own an eponymous interior brand. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE AND USE OF COLOR? I create easy pieces for the home that convey warmth and spirit, and bring color into a neutral landscape, like a vase of flowers. Color is key in my work. I make the prettiest shades of pink from botanical sources and hues of blue that are impossible to recreate with flat synthetic dyes. I can't look at a flower or a tree without considering what color I can extract from it. WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS WHEN STARTING A NEW PIECE? I always start with color first and then consider which fiber would take the color the best. With natural dyes, the color can vary immensely according to whether it is protein fibers, like silk or wool, or a cellulose fiber, like cotton or linen. Silk is brighter and richer, and cotton tends to be more faded and subdued. I create small batches of the dye in my backyard in Boulder. WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION? I travel near and far as often as I can, but visits to a great florist or local garden center like Harlequin Gardens can be very exciting. I am obsessed with flowers, and I'm always wondering how I can use them for their color. WHAT GOALS HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON YOUR CURRENT PIECES? In our consumer culture, there are so many throwaway items; I try to make something that lasts and has an impact on the user but not on the earth. I would also like to find a locally produced hemp fabric to use in my collection. 42
