Month of Love OH, THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY. It’s short, sweet and filled with sweets (thanks for the handout, Hallmark). Valentine’s Day is a bit of a gimmick for card companies, but at least it makes you reflect on who, or what, you love. It only made sense to meet makers this month, because if there’s one thing we learned through these interviews and photo shoots, it’s that these makers pour their heart and soul into their craft. Meet Marsha Robinson, gracing the cover this month. She’s a self-taught artist and designer behind Strange Dirt (@strangedirt), creating whimsical yet complex botanical textiles reminiscent of the Art-Deco era. Plenty of pops of color and designs to die for. Then there’s husband/wife team Jon and Deana Ketchum who create perfectly crafted furniture through their woodworking studio, New Collar Goods (@new_collar_goods).

AROUND TOWN as show her own work throughout NYC, Brooklyn and Long Island. Tucek also worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the MoMA while pursuing her master's degree from Queens College and exhibited in a group show for the Create Ability Program. Upon graduating, Tucek’s work moved away from illustrative, figurative work to embrace the abstract. Now based in Denver, Tucek is continually exploring Colorado’s vast landscape with her two children and is in love and inspired by her new environment. The exhibition tells the personal story (and struggle) of Tucek’s life, a story about gradually losing (and later gaining back) control. Her story is one about strength and resilience, all the while continuing to carry a tremendous amount of weight as both a mother and a woman. The partnership between Tucek and ATC DEN was inevita-

medium heat, then add the vegetables and herbs. Sauté until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes, then increase the heat to medium-high and add the lobster shells and remains. Sauté for 5 to 6 minutes, then add the tomato paste and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. 3. Add the sherry, then ignite or cook until the alcohol has evaporated. Add fish stock and 1 cup of the lobster-cooking liquid. Bring to a simmer and cook, covered, for 1 hour. 4. Strain the broth through a colander, pressing down hard on the solids to extrude as much liquid as possible. Wipe out the pot and pour in the broth. Add the rice and cook for at least 30 minutes, or until the grains are cooked to extreme softness. 5. Blend the bisque in a food processor or blender, then pass through a fine sieve, again pressing down hard on what solids remain. Add the cream and bring to a low simmer. Add the chopped lobster meat, let it heat through, then season to taste with salt and cayenne. Recipe by Food Editor & Boutique Private Chef Dane Hiett, ChefDanesKitchen.com. HOT SPOT

(CON TI N U ED)

YOU EXPECT THE POPULIST TO BE COOL–HOW COULD IT NOT BE? The bar’s dark exterior and vintage industrial vibes are stylish–without trying too hard. The menu is creative and eclectic. Not to mention The Populist is home to one of the most rad outdoor patios in town, complete with an Instagram-worthy wall draped in vines and string lights. Cool–clearly. What you’re not expecting is to be utterly charmed by intimate atmosphere of neighborhood locals chatting at the bar, by the food that is both comforting and indulgent, and most of all, by the passionate and genius staff. Take Chelsea Mahoney, the lead bartender at the Populist, who has an almost dizzying knowledge of the bottles that line the shelves behind her and creativity to match. On any given night, order the Bartender’s Choice– you’ll be getting a drink that perhaps no one has ever gotten before. Chelsea creates it on the spot, often naming it after the patron who ordered it. From her confidence and expertise, you’d never guess that she was a server when The Populist opened five years ago. Within a month she was behind the bar and has been there ever since. You can’t help but wonder where Mahoney gets the inspiration for such creativity behind the bar. Pulling out a copy of David Embury’s "The Fine Art of Mixing Cocktails,” she explains, “This is my go-to. I get a lot of inspiration from this book, which was written in the 40’s. I love how creative you can be behind the bar, and how everyone has their own style. Everyone can put their stamp on it.” Chelsea describes her style as southern, feminine and weird, and compares mixing a drink to creating the varied notes of a perfume. We sample a Snow White, a frothy cocktail of rum, lime, pineapple and egg white that immediately has us longing for warmer weather. We also try a variation of a Jack Rose, garnished with lemon and flower petals. Close your eyes as you savor its citrus and herbal flavors, and it might almost trick you into thinking that it’s spring. Both drinks are delicate and delicious, and both are part of The Populist’s spring cocktail lineup. This season, if you’re looking for charm, come in and ask to see Chelsea’s famous bar trick. Then order a cocktail–you might just leave with a drink named after you.

THE NEW WAVE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION ACROSS ALL SPECTRUMS

THE POPULATION OF DENVER IS MULTIPLYING AND, WITH THAT GROWTH, THE CITY’S ART SCENE IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE EXCITING. This month we interviewed four artists and craftspeople at the forefront of Denver’s community of makers–Marsha Robinson of Strange Dirt, Jon and Deana Ketchum of New Collar Goods, and Bonnie Gregory, artist and welder. 30

24 HOURS WITH WINTER SESSION WINTER SESSION’S MISSION TO, “MAKE THINGS FOR PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT HOW THINGS ARE MADE,” CREATES AN INTENTIONAL APPROACH BOTH IN AND OUT OF THEIR WAREHOUSE IN RINO. Husband and wife team Roy Katz and Tanya Fleisher founded the company in 2010 and carry a wide variety of beautifully, carefully hand-crafted leather and wax canvas goods. Fleisher’s art and design background coupled with Katz’s architectural background makes for a balanced dynamic while visualizing each product and bringing it to fruition. They believe, “how we choose to be in the world matters.” So it’s no surprise their company, its products, and their lifestyle reflects this intention. Take a peek at a day’s work for Winter Session. 6:50 AM Alarm goes off. Peek out the window to see if the sun’s up (it’s not).

ARTIST’S PALETTE

PL AY FU L P R O C E S S, M O D E R N ARTICLE CAMILLE WILSON | PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREA BUROLLA PHOTOGRAPHY

B E A U T Y 48

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | February 2018

THROUGH A MASHUP OF CONTEMPORARY FINE ART CREATION AND A CHILDREN’S PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE, ANDREA BUROLLA PHOTOGRAPHY IS HELPING KIDS FIND NEW FREEDOM AND CREATIVITY WHILE PROVIDING PARENTS WITH BEAUTIFUL, GALLERY-WORTHY ART FOR THEIR WALLS—AND MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME. The concept is messy but simple. After setting a date and agreeing on a color palette custom to the family’s home and tastes, they are invited to Burolla’s large studio space in Lakewood to play and paint. Burolla photographs the child’s fun paint exploration on an 80 squarefoot paper, but the real magic happens after the family leaves. She then examines the painting in small sections looking for interesting shapes, textures and color composition and photographs them. "It's a special way to capture a moment in childhood and have it up on your wall for many years, most people would never guess they were actually done by your kids," says Burolla. “It gives parents beautiful and contemporary artwork that is both artistic and sentimental by preserving a part of their child's creativity.” Clients receive one 20x30-inch print and can choose to upgrade size and materials. Burolla says most clients buy the digital files or a printed book of their child in action to remember the painting process, and many add art prints to create a series of two or three images together. Inspired by the simple black and white macro images of Edward Weston, Burolla has loved photography her entire life. She says the medium provides a special ability to bring to light things we normally take for granted and compose them in a way that is visually interesting. “Photography helps us discover the extraordinary in everyday moments,” says Burolla. Looking ahead, Burolla plans to focus on new fundraising opportunities in 2018. She will begin selling

(AndreaBurollaPhotography.com) where a portion of sales will be donated to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She has also forged a relationship with the National PKU Alliance, inviting kids who have the inherited metabolic disorder Phenylketonuria to participate in painting sessions. Their artwork will then be auctioned at a PKU fundraising gala in Denver in May. Burolla is seeking additional partnerships to help with fundraising efforts for other local charitable organizations.

"IT'S A SPECIAL WAY TO CAPTURE A MOMENT IN CHILDHOOD AND HAVE IT UP ON YOUR WALL FOR MANY YEARS, MOST PEOPLE WOULD NEVER GUESS THEY WERE ACTUALLY DONE BY YOUR KIDS," SAYS BUROLLA. “IT GIVES PARENTS BEAUTIFUL AND CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK THAT IS BOTH ARTISTIC AND SENTIMENTAL BY PRESERVING A PART OF THEIR CHILD'S CREATIVITY.”
