Challenge Accepted

MAY 2017 PUBLISHER

T

his Mother’s Day holds a special place in my heart as my husband and I are expecting our first child this year! While I am thrilled to embark upon this next chapter of our lives, I also find myself evaluating how to balance both my career and motherhood. Not surprisingly, I quickly turned to my mom for her advice on the topic. After raising my brother, sister and I while working full time as a teacher and still managing to cook dinner most nights of the week...I figured she might know a thing or two about all of this! She told me motherhood is one of the most challenging and rewarding things she has ever done. From my perspective, I always felt unconditional love and support from both my working parents; something I hope my child will also feel. After seemingly endless hours of evaluating my new future and taking my mother’s words to heart, I can finally (and proudly) say, “challenge accepted!” On to entrepreneurs and moms who do it all, enter the wonderful Heidi Kidd. Heidi handcrafts unique jewelry with natural gemstones, all inspired by her four-year-old daughter, Emerson. Next, there’s Amy Dickerson. Amy owns Live Love Lash and pursues her passion for health and beauty in Cherry Creek North. Her humble team of one now boasts a glam squad of 20. These women are just two of the many amazing local business owners and entrepreneurs sharing their wisdom in this month’s issue. Female entrepreneurs thrive in the Denver job market, and the women mentioned above are leading the way while showing others it’s possible to create successful businesses doing what you love. These stories are laid out in this month’s issue and demonstrate the value inherent in great networking, great mentors and great women supporting one another while making their mark in the world!

STYLISH AND APPROACHABLE, ELEGANT AND COMFORTABLE,

Heidi Kidd Jewelry is an example in gorgeous jewelry pieces that balance making a statement with being wearable for any and every occasion. With pieces featured in boutiques throughout the greater Denver area and some artisan market appearances lined up in the coming months, Heidi Kidd contin-

ues to spread her love for classy, unique jewelry inspired by natural elements and her laid back west coast upbringing. LISA: How did you get started creating jewelry? HEIDI: I’ve always loved jewelry and remember going through my mom and grandma’s jew-

elry boxes as a kid and reveling in it. I actually like to plan my outfits around jewelry, which is the opposite of what most people do, but it’s always just been a part of me. When I was in high school in California, I started going to a nearby bead store and making jewelry pieces for my friends and family, and it just grew from there. LISA: When did you make that leap from hobby to a profession? HEIDI: It really started growing after I graduated college. I worked in the corporate world for

a while and made jewelry as a hobby, but then a friend invited me to participate in an artisan market with her with some of my jewelry pieces, and I had an incredible amount of fun those two weeks prepping and going to the market. I’m mostly self-taught, but after that, I commit-

ted and started honing my skills. LISA: What is your jewelry’s overall style and aesthetic? HEIDI: My pieces are very clean and modern. They aren’t too complicated. I’m a west coast beach

girl at heart, and I draw a lot of inspiration from nature in my materials and colors I use. I specifically love light blues and soft tones and using semi-precious stones and even antler tips in my pieces. 22

LISA: What drew you to using these unique natural elements, and what are your

favorites to work with? HEIDI: I enjoy and believe in bringing what’s offered to us in nature into my jewelry. Some of my

favorite materials have western influences, like turquoise and Larimar, which is a light blue stone with white mixed into it that makes it look like a beautiful sky. Those two are my all-time favorites. LISA: Who do you hope wears your jewelry, and how should it make them feel? HEIDI: Jewelry is meant to be worn, and not just for special occasions or fancy nights out. All

of my pieces are made to be versatile and worn all the time, whether you’re going out in shorts and a tank top still sporting sandy hair after a day at the beach, or if you’re going to a big event and are looking for a statement piece. I want people to be comfortable and just plain feel good in my jewelry, and when I get that feedback, it is so fulfilling. LISA: Do you have favorite pieces to create? HEIDI: I’m really excited about my entire line right now. I’m particularly proud of my gold fringe

earrings. They take a long time to create and are intricate. They have 30 to 40 individual pieces that go into each of them, but when someone tries them on and loves them, it makes me so proud and happy that it’s more than worth it. LISA: What do you have coming up in the next few months? HEIDI: It’s been such a great year so far, and I have quite a few markets coming up in May. I’ll be at the

Horseshoe Market in Denver on May 13th, Denver Flea May 13th - 14th, and Firefly in Boulder May 20th - 21st. I’ve also gotten my pieces featured in some new boutiques this past year, and you can find them at Relevant Goods in Denver, Kismet in multiple locations, Willow in Boulder, Eleanor and Hobbs in Louisville, and Mountain Daisy in Evergreen amongst others. My sister is also coming on board to work with me this year to expand into even more boutiques, so the fun continues! 24

BATYA STEPELMAN WALLTAWK + DESIGN

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOUR IDEA OR CONCEPT FOR WALLTAWK + DESIGN?

I’ve always had a thing for wallpaper. The business was inspired by three things that I care about: home, design and advancing and highlighting the profile of independent designers (mostly femaleowned businesses). WHAT WOULD YOU ARGUE IS THE BEST ASPECT OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT?

The freedom to pursue your vision, without compromise. NUMBER ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY?

It’s part of life. You need to overcome things to move on. You also grow through mistakes. HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR COMPANY’S SUCCESS?

Denver is incredibly supportive. I don’t think I would have this kind of success if I had stayed in my hometown, NYC, or lived in a different metro area. People want to shop locally and support Denver-owned businesses. WORK-LIFE BALANCE IS A HOT TOPIC IN BUSINESS THESE DAYS, DO YOU FEEL IT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE?

This is a work in progress. It’s hard. I once read a blog post that analogized life to a stove top with four burners. There’s one for health, one for family/love, one for a career, and one for friends. It’s not possible to have all your burners blazing on high at the same time.

home is the culmination of creative efforts of the homeowners and premiere architecture, interior design and construction firms throughout the region, all working to create a stunning residence that balances luxury with a welcoming natural warmth. Thoroughly raising the bar for modern home design, this property embodies the Colorado lifestyle of being enraptured with and enveloped by the outdoors. The kitchen, designed with minimalism in mind, allows for the space’s natural materials to shine, featuring details such as a huge slab granite center island with a breakfast bar. The master suite is likewise simple yet sophisticated, blending utility and function with clean lines and unique features, such as the freestanding fireplace and office alcove. The open floor plan of the main great room acts as a large-scale entertainment space that takes the idea of opening the windows on a cool summer night to a whole new level. “There is a smooth and flawless transition from inside to outside,” says Josh Behr, the property’s co-listing broker with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty.

wning a brand new Porsche 911 R is no an easy feat. Despite there only being 911 R’s in existence, many selling without hesitation.

Of this limited series, Denver’s 9 News reporter Adele Arakawa is

among the few “handful of Porsche purists (who didn’t own a 918) …handpicked by dealerships…” Among these elite motorists, considerably fewer women were offered the chance to purchase the race car. Local foreign car importer, Prestige Imports of Lakewood, first wrote a letter on her behalf. Greg Sunfield of Prestige Imports gave insight about this process and how the dealership was able to nominate Adele. 46

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | May 2017

Gregg explains, “Normally cars are given to dealers to sell to their customers, but with so few cars this was not possible. So Porsche initiated an application process for the cars with about 18 scheduled for the USA.” “We (Prestige Imports) drafted a letter on Adele’s behalf, speaking about her long connection to Porsche, the Porsche community and the community at large being a local news television figure. The application went up the ladder of review until it made it to Porsche executive management in Germany at Porsche AG corporation. They determined that Adele would receive one of these very exclusive Porsche cars.” We sat down with Adele and explored her passion for fast cars and racing. WHEN DID YOUR INTEREST IN RACE CARS BEGIN? HOW DID IT DEVELOP OVER TIME?

My first car was a 1971 Fiat 850 Spyder when I was 16 years old. Over the years, I fed my love for cars with many different makes and models, including a Datsun 240Z, a 280Z, 300ZX and Jaguar XJS. My first Porsche was a 1991 911 C4, and I've owned Porsches ever since. WHAT DREW YOU TOWARDS OWNING THIS VEHICLE?

The 911R was Porsche's answer to enthusiasts to those who wanted a "back-to-basics" car. Porsche had gone to what's considered a manual transmission on most of its cars and a numb, cushier feel, away from the car that defined the 911 in the past: a driver's car that you could connect to. HAVE YOU PARTICIPATED IN A TRACK DAY? DO YOU PLAN TO WITH THE 911 R?

My sentimental favorite Porsche is a 1995 911 C4, purchased in 1999 that I turned into a dedicated race car. It has 14,000 track miles on it and has been to numerous tracks, including Daytona International Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The new 911R may see some track time, but not extensively. WHERE HAVE YOUR FAVORITE FEW PLACES TO DRIVE THE 911R? CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHERE YOU WERE AND WHY

As a licensed Club Racer with the Porsche Club and a certified instructor, I do get to share my passion for cars with other women who are also instructors or come to the track with their cars. Some women will come with their significant others to find out: what a track day is all about and end up enjoying it as much anyone. The Club holds a Ladies Day event, no testosterone allowed, where it's women only behind the wheel. It's the best event of the season!

Own your lifestyle

Could Downsizing Be Right For You? O

nce you get to a certain point in life, you can choose to stay in your present home, or you can choose to make good use of your investment and take the next step in your evolving lifestyle. While the idea may seem a bit daunting at first, the trade-offs of downsizing can be well worth it, including the ability to embrace a “lock-andleave” type lifestyle to facilitate your growing desires for jet-setting and adventure… both locally and abroad. The Denver Luxe Team is here to help you take an in-depth look at your specific lifestyle goals and help determine which neighborhoods, amenities and housing choices could be perfect for your particular time in life, as you delight in your upcoming years and share in such joy with your family and neighbors in new and enticing ways. Downsizing gives you the chance to own that cool new condo, loft or chic luxury home that’s been catching your eye, to have less to clean and maintain (with regards to both home and yard), as well as to take advantage of the current “hot” local real estate market…and the list goes on!

Additionally, our team will support you by directing you towards targeted, local resources that can assist you with your downsizing efforts in both significant and small ways as needed – from helping you to clean, organize and determine the fate of your stuff, to planning for the safe transport of your most prized collections and items, to coordinating movers and other household help for moving day and beyond. If you are interested in exploring your options, allow us to help you take a deeper look at the current market and consider whether 2017 could be the year to downsize your home and secure your ideal lifestyle.

The Denver Luxe Team: When you require certainty that your interests are protected and your real estate transactions are handled in a sophisticated manner. As local luxury real estate specialists with a distinctly global reach, we possess the experience, confidence, and market savvy you require to secure your ideal lifestyle choices. Wherever you are considering a residential real estate transaction, take your trusted advisory team with you.
