Bidding Adieu to the 2016-2017 Ski Season
T
en years ago, if you told me that I would only get ten days on the hill, I would have thought that was a slow two weeks. After logging exactly “zero” days on my pass last year, my stoke level to get ten this year was pretty high. My season kicked off in an unexpected, yet awesome fashion, in Telluride. Although it was only a one day trip in early December, we savored every second. There is nothing like Telluride...especially when you get a direct flight from Mountain Aviation out of Broomfield. My next ski experience took place at our “home base” of Eldora. My kids were delivered new skis and boards by Santa this year, so we immediately started taking day trips up the canyon. With the recent purchase of Eldora by the Powdr Corporation, this also brought the Woodward ski/ride kids program that has been so popular at Copper Mountain. Eldora has long been known for their great children’s lesson programs, but adding Woodward to the mix made a good thing great. January marked another milestone for our family, as my wife Kate took her first ski lesson at Eldora. Her instructor was none other than Harvey Hine, from HMH Architecture + Interiors here in Boulder. When Harvey isn’t designing award-winning homes, he can indeed be found up at Eldora, where he and his wife Gail love visiting their quaint cabin. In February, myself and four other guys headed to Vail for a dudes weekend. Say what you will about dealing with I-70, but to steal their own tagline, Vail is “like no place on earth” when it comes to the vast amount of skiable terrain. I guess I’m also biased as I called Vail home for a few seasons in the mid-2000’s. As usual, Vail did not disappoint on this trip. March opened up with a family trip to Crested Butte. Coined as “Colorado’s last great ski town,” it’s hard to argue their point. One could certainly make a case that if you are going to drive four hours to ski, you minds well be looping through scenic byways, rather than sitting in traffic. The kids loved the ski class so much that they literally cried as we left town. If you go, make sure to hit up The Eldo, for great apres ski and live music. To close out the season, my wife and I escaped to Aspen for exactly twenty-two hours to celebrate our anniversary. We were lucky enough to stay at The Gant, which is a condominium hotel located near the base of Aspen ski area. Our room walked directly out to the hot tub and heated pool. That evening, we took in The String Cheese Incident’s show at the famed Belly Up. With a capacity of just 450 people, we felt like SCI was playing a private show just for us. Pure magic! While Colorado may not have had the record snowfall as our neighbors over in California did, we certainly feel blessed to live in an area with multiple ski world-class ski options, all within a day’s drive. Wishing you a great start to your spring!

VINTAGE CLASS IN HISTORIC CHERRY CREEK THE ARTISAN SHOP SHARES A NEW BUILD THAT PRESERVES HISTORY WITH TASTE

alking through this new home build in Cherry Creek, guests are transported to many locales. From a Tuscan villa to a café
patio, a kitchen to make French chefs swoon to a cozy, speakeasy-esque wet bar, it’s a home that blends vintage grandeur with an intimate, inviting feel. This juxtaposition of the expansive and the cozy is a challenge that The Artisan Shop, a full-service local design/build/ install firm, was more than up for. “The vision for this project was to blend the interior with the classic look of the exterior in tribute to the surrounding neighborhood, which includes many historic homes,” says Jeff Stone, EVP/Owner at The Artisan Shop. With historic class throughout, each room has its own character that blends cohesively into the overall style of the home. “The home covers quite a bit of square footage,” says the homeowner, “but it’s still really comfortable and welcoming.” A home to both live and entertain in; it’s a structure full of artfulness. From the collection of art on the walls to the stonework of the foyer archway, the bold light fixtures to the intricacies of the finishes throughout, each room oozes with vintage style and the personality and taste of the homeowner.

It’s likewise an example in open yet intimate entertaining spaces. The downstairs includes a bar and lounge area, while the main floor dining room has an airy, European villa air. One of Artisan designer Christian’s favorite features is the hidden elevator adjacent to the Great Room that transports guests to the cozy wet bar on the top floor perfect for a quiet nightcap. Perhaps the home’s most signature area is its main level kitchen. According to Stone, making a statement with elements in the kitchen was a priority for the homeowner. Third Floor Wet Bar
“The enormous range wall hood surround includes raised panel details, a two-step crown molding, and a custom mantelpiece,” says Matt Olivas, Artisan Design Manager. “The painted and glazed finish of the cabinetry makes a grand statement and is set apart from the rest of the kitchen.” Featuring two long islands with custom lathe-turned furniture legs, the kitchen exhibits a warm balance of dark wood cabinetry and bright natural light. Even the Butler Pantry, lined with two-sided glass cabinets over a window, allows plenty of sunlight. From the overall concept to the intricacies of the details in each room, this home encompasses precision in design, balance in style, and luxurious livability, courtesy of The Artisan Shop.

We possess the experience, confidence and market savvy your real estate portfolio demands—as Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialists (CLHMS) and members of the Million Dollar Guild® with the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing, and as Certified Negotiation Experts (CNE®) of local distinction.
listed your home YET IT’S NOT SELLING? Are you and your family ready to make a move onto new horizons, but your listing just won’t sell? You know it’s a great house and someone will fall in love with it, but when?! If your house is sitting on the market, you may need to ask yourself a few key questions to help you move on. First, ask yourself if you need to update your advertising; compare it to other houses getting more attention on the market in your neighborhood. Check your property on websites as if you were the buyer, and see what’s coming up and how you could better help potential buyers “see” themselves in your home.
LOCAL PURVEYORS WITH A GLOBAL REACH As global luxury real estate specialists, our team is primed to advise you and negotiate on your behalf, nationally and internationally: • Team members in all 50 states, as well as in 21 countries around the world • Members of Proxio Pro: International MLS and elite network of luxury agents At every turn, we demonstrate our commitment to enduring relationships and to securing your ideal lifestyle choices. Wherever you are considering a residential real estate transaction, take your trusted advisory team with you…and bring your greatest expectations.

“I hired Karina based on a recommendation from a friend and I couldn’t have asked for a better realtor. She handled the entire sales process for my condo and we were able to close quickly and above asking price. Not only is she a great realtor, she was very pleasant to work with and I will definitely be using her services again in the future. I can’t recommend her enough!” Michael Ryan | Denver CO
KARINA CHRISTENSEN | Team Lead, Owner, Realtor® APRIL WILSON | Realtor®, Buyer Specialist
Second, even though the price is often the one thing that sellers are not willing to negotiate, if your house is not selling you may need to consider taking a price reduction; especially if you’re eager to start the next chapter of your life in a new home. Lastly, you must be realistic about market conditions. Even though the Denver market is still quite “hot” and heating up for Spring, for luxury homes it’s still a buyer’s market in certain neighborhoods. Keep your expectations realistic, and consider reaching out to the Denver Luxe Team to help you take a deeper look at the current market and consider your options to secure your ideal lifestyle.

LOOKING FOR AUTHENTIC, COLORADO LIQUOR? FRED AND SUSAN LESNICK OF BLACK CANYON DISTILLERY HAVE THE SECRET RECIPE: HARD WORK AND HELP FROM COMMUNITY. ARTICLE SAMANTHA TRUEHEART ILLUSTRATION NEIL MACKAY
F
inding the right liquor that everyone likes is challenging. Whether you’re a dark, whiskey drinker or a light, vodka
drinker, everyone has a unique taste and preference for their drink of choice. But Fred and Susan Lesnick of Black Canyon Distillery in Longmont, Colorado, have figured out the magic recipe. Their whiskey and vodka have such an authentic, creative flavor that people begin to question their own taste buds. It’s no surprise that their Black Canyon Winter won Gold in the Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival in 2015 and the Black Canyon Colada won People’s Choice Award for the best cocktail at the Boulder County Fair. Every step of the distilling process is done with care, consciousness and innovation. From labeling their bottles to building the taproom bar, this duo is not afraid of a little hard work with their make-it-yourself approach to business-owning. And what makes their business shine even brighter? Their ingredients are locally sourced, and the leftover mash is given to local ranchers to feed to livestock–because cows deserve to let loose every now and then too!
42
Cherry Creek Lifestyle | April 2017
SAMANTHA: What was it like starting a distilling company? FRED: Since I already knew how to ferment, it was just the distill-
ing process that I had to figure out–and that was very interesting. I built those stills, and it took me three months to figure out how to run them right. It wasn’t a quick process…the real truth is when you start something like this, your first whiskey isn’t all that great. It needs improvement. We did probably 12-15 experimental ones to try and get it narrowed down to really focus on what we wanted to do. And at that point, you think you have it, and you put it in the barrel and sweat for two years, [thinking] ‘is this gonna be any good?’. We tasted it every six months, and we were very encouraged. SAMANTHA: Where did the name come from? FRED: We wanted something that was Colorado. We like to stay
as ‘Colorado’ as we can. It took about a year-and-a-half to come up with the name. Every time we came up with something, we’d say, ‘Oh, that’s it! That’s great!’ and then two weeks later we’d pick something else. So we finally ended up with The Black Canyon. We started here instead of starting over [in Black Canyon] because I was still working. So here we are–Black Canyon north of Denver! SAMANTHA: What sets your whiskey apart from others? SUSAN: We [hand] make it. FRED: I think our taste does. A lot of people do a pepper vodka,
but they use dried peppers. SUSAN: –Or artificial flavors. We don’t have any artificial colors,
flavors, or preservatives. SAMANTHA: What’s the hardest part of being a small business? SUSAN: Fred and I didn’t have millions of dollars, but because he
had the ability to make a lot of our stuff–that’s kept us alive. He’s got that good ole’ American ingenuity that his dad taught him. And I can’t speak enough for Colorado people supporting small business and local business. FRED: If you get a decent cause, the community will turn out for it.
They’ve been great family. SUSAN: We don’t have a lot of money or anything, but we really
have a rich life with people that come in and we meet.

GET DECKED OUT DESIGNS BY SUNDOWN ADDS FURNITURE AND DECOR TO CREATE OUTDOOR SANCTUARIES.
W
ith longer hours of daylight and temperatures starting to warm up, patio season is nearly upon us. Whether
sipping a chardonnay in the afternoon sun while listening to a cascading water feature or enjoying the glow of a fire while dining with friends, today’s home patios are much more than a place to keep the grill. They have become an extension of the home and an ideal place for entertaining. Homeowners put so much thought and effort into decorating an indoor living room or dining room, with furniture style and placement setting the flow and balance of each space. So why not take this same approach to changing a patio in a sophisticated outdoor living room? Designs by Sundown, one of the area’s premier landscape architecture, construction and and décor department with this precise idea in mind. Their expertise in high-end residential landscape projects has now become a one-stop destination for outdoor living. Jessica Hommel, the marketing manager, says custom outdoor furniture can sometimes take six months to arrive after it is ordered, and this defining element for outdoor living should be seamless for customers. Hommel says Designs by Sundown has been adding livable square footage outside client homes since her father Michael started the company more than 30 years ago—now with more than 200 employees—and the addition of furniture and decor brings a finishing touch to their line of service. “It’s a natural extension for our high-end clients since it allows them to begin enjoying the new space right away without any delay or hassle,” said Hommel. “It has been really well-received so far.” Patio furniture should match the overall style and personality of the landscape design as well as the home itself. Furniture options include a wide variety of materials such as cast aluminum, all-weather wicker, natural teak or brushed stainless steel among others. 46
