uring our monthly planning meeting (dubbed ‘Deadlines & Donuts’) we collectively had a million ideas for the theme, Arts & Culture. We all know that Denver is for art lovers. As much as we would love to feature so many of the talented artists, all using different mediums, we narrowed it down to a few stand out makers for this month. They are creative forces that are unstoppable, and they invited us into their homes and studios to pick their brains (Maker, pg. 28).

There’s also now art behind every street corner, which is why we featured And Art Space, founded by the talented Leah Brenner, who is bringing local talent to businesses who want to beautify the urban landscape (And [Art] Space, pg. 42). I got a chance to interview the talented calligrapher, Hannah Howard, who gave us an ABC's do-it-yourself to inspire others to appreciate a craft that's been practiced for centuries (to write, pg. 48). If one thing is for certain, we will continue to have an endless list of creatives to feature throughout the year. We hope you enjoy and that this issue sparks your creativity. ON THE COVER

CALL OF THE WILD ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL RAINERO

22

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | February 2017

M

y ideas about dog sledding came from Jack London’s famous novels Call of the Wild and White Fang; Disney also threw

in a bone with their not-so-famous 2006 movie Eight Below. All in all, it seemed like an amazing experience. So when we had the assignment to do a dog sledding feature, I was all in. The primary motivation behind this dog sledding feature was pure curiosity. As I sat looking at my two dogs (a pug and wannabe pug that’s a lab), I was interested to see a dog at work. I typically get pulled by my dogs on leashes, but for pulling to be a dog’s actual duty was fascinating. Alpine Adventures Dog Sledding, known for their unique, hands-on dog sledding tours, caught my attention because of the rave reviews and long reputation, a total of fifteen seasons. I sent an email, owner Loren Priem confirmed, and we were off to the races. As photographer Michael Rainero and I took off Sunday morning on 1-70 West, dressed in ski clothing and plenty of wool, I envisioned playing with big, fluffy Siberian Huskies. A few hours later (thanks, mountain traffic) we finally made it and were in for a surprise. After meeting Dana, our guide and the alpha of her 12-dog team, we walked over for the rest of the introductions. What first caught my attention were all the colors, shapes and sizes of the dogs. Although purebred Siberian Huskies can be used in dog sledding, Alaskan Huskies, we learned, dominate in both racing and touring. “Alaskans are a crossbreed created and bred for long-distance running. Siberians are a pure breed, but could never run the miles that Alaskans do. So you see them bred with running breeds,” says Loren. And during this peak season, there’s a lot of running. “Only during the very busiest time of our peak holiday season does a team run four tours a day. In theory, a team could run a total of 22 miles in a full day,” says Loren. “But that is broken up over four tours throughout the entire day. A 5-6 mile run for these athletes is barely stretching their legs.”

Dana’s team would be on their second tour of the day with us in tow. Becca (2) and Scout (4) were the leading ladies and the smallest out of the team. “We have the muscle in the back, speed and intelligence in front,” explained Dana. We opted for the one-hour "tagsled" tour in which two dog sleds are attached, and the guide takes the first sled to help guide. Both Michael and I got the opportunity to help drive, ride and control the team. I started out as the driver and let out an enthusiastic “mush,” and the packs pent-up excitement was let out in one cooperative pull. The ride was serene and the perfect way to spend a Sunday. There was an impending snowstorm set to hit the following day, so the view of typically blue skies and Mt. Elbert (the tallest 14-er in Colorado) was blocked. We didn’t mind since it felt like a true tundra, alpine adventure. When we got back, we helped bring each dog back to his or her station, and then it was feeding time. As soon as they were done eating, you could see through their soft grunts, barks and occasional howls their excitement to get back to the ride. We saw families with children of all ages, couples old and young, and groups of friends. Most of Alpine’s business comes from out-of-staters visiting the slopes looking for a unique snow experience outside of skiing. “Everyone knows about snowmobiling, which I love to do as well, but dog sledding is one of those bucket-list activities for tourists,” says Loren. “We hear it every day, all day long, that we are the highlight of everyone’s winter vacation, and we take pride in that.” I may not be a tourist, but it was the highlight of my winter and a definite conversation starter. If you’re near Breck, Vail, Copper Mountain or Keystone, visit Alpine to cross 'dog sledding' off your bucket list.

“Lately I’ve been enjoying doing a lot of portraiture and food illustration. I’ve also been making strides in the direction of writing and illustrating books, so this year will have a big focus on getting that off the ground. And of course, I will embrace any other exciting ventures that pop up along the way!"

WHO WHAT

ANNIE HERZIG ILLUSTRATOR, DESIGNER & ARTIST

ANNIEHERZIG.COM ETSY.COM/SHOP/AWRECKANDATANGLE @ANNIEHERZIG

Annie Herzig started drawing when she was “teeny tiny and always loved it.” She says, “My mom used to sit me down on the sidewalk with a Tupperware full of water and a paintbrush, and I would create pictures that would quickly fade away. I wanted to be a Disney animator a little later on, around ten years old, and would teach myself how to draw characters like Simba or the Genie.” As an adult, experimenting with different media and creating art for various outlets led her down an interesting path. “Working in a corporate environment trained me to produce work for other people, letting go of my own desires for what I create, and simply meeting the company’s needs to sell a product,” explains Herzig. She finds inspiration through an abundance of outlets—family, food, traveling, other illustrators, like Maurice Sendak and Mercer Mayer, and more. “I’m influenced by animals, plants, science, and nature. By kids and their art. And of course, by John Denver,” she adds. “I’d say my style is semi-realistic but simplistic, playful, and whimsical. I love simple lines, and I especially love the sort of wild nature of watercolor. It seems to have a life of its own, so I find myself using it a lot.” Her advice for budding artists: “Don’t stand still. Keep moving and making, that’s when living and growing happens.”

BRIAN FOUHY CREATOR, ART DIRECTOR AND AUTHOR OF COLLECTING WORDS — VERY (SHORT) VISUAL (STORIES)

BRIANFOUHY.COM COLLECTINGWORDS.COM/BOOK @FOUHY

While in grad school five years ago at Boulder Digital Works, Brian Fouhy joined Instagram, a visually creative online platform, and began following different people he found inspiring. “One of which was @josecabaco who photographs a lot of words, which influenced me to begin noticing the words that are all around us and #collectingwords was born,” says Fouhy. Fouhy began capturing photographs of those words he came across as he wandered through life, on street signs, graffitied walls, etc. “I had amassed a fairly large collection of words and had always had this thought for a book in the back of my mind. However, rather than just feature the words individually, I had the thought to arrange what I had found into stories, in a refrigerator magnet style, where the words in the images came together to tell a bigger story and also allow the images and words to be interpreted in new ways. In all, there are 43 original visual short stories, some fun, some romantic, ultimately showcasing how poetic the world around us can be,” explains Fouhy. He adds that his strongest source of inspiration often comes from just drifting through streets. “Some of the best words I have found, I have found by not trying to find them but by wandering and being aware of what surrounds me.”

CHRISTINA GRAZIANO OWNER OF BLADE & KNOLL

BLADEANDKNOLL.COM @BLADEANDKNOLL Christina Graziano has been a maker since childhood: forts, jewelry, paintings and more. In college, she started creating more conceptual sculptural objects. Now she’s the creator behind Blade & Knoll, handmade jewelry and household goods made with a modern, abstract and minimalistic twist. “My focus has become making quality handmade jewelry and other household goods with my ever-changing 3D inspiration and artistic aesthetic. Through this exploration, I am constantly creating new jewelry, cutting boards, shelves, wall hangings, mobiles, sculptures and other household goods.” She says pieces are usually dark, organic (almost root-like) in shape and leans toward traditional materials, such as bronze, steel, hardwood, wire, horse hair and dyes. “As a jewelry designer, you are making objects for the body, so personal style is key. I would say that my artwork can be described as sculptural explorations of personal tensions through heavily ornamented forms,” says Graziano. She finds inspiration through viewing other artists’ work. “Lately I have been rediscovering my love for Victor Passmore and Alexander Calder. I have also been pulling a lot of inspiration from mathematical and programming diagrams.”

“Every time I learned a new technique, such as welding, casting, brazing, woodworking, forming, working with different materials, etc., the more I evolve and see how those techniques relate to my work, expand my work or change my conceptions.” February 2017 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle

Syringa Vulgaris Lilac

ETYMOLOGY |

• Via Arabic ‫ كليل‬lilak from Persian ‫ کلین‬nilak meaning "bluish."

• The genus name Syringa is derived from Greek syrinx, meaning a hollow tube or pipe and refers to the broad pith in the shoots in some species, easily hollowed out since ancient times to make reed pipes and flutes. • The English common name "lilac" is from the French lilac THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS |

Purple lilacs symbolize the first emotions of love. | Syringa is a flowery, wooded plant that's related to the olive family (Oleaceae) and is native from southeastern Europe to eastern Asia. Although they are commonly cultivated in temperate areas such as Colorado, which is why you see them blooming in early-, mid- and late-season. |

Paeonia Peony

ETYMOLOGY |

The word peony has its root in ancient Greek. One legend has it that the peony is named after Paeon, the physician to the gods, who studied under Asclepius, who became jealous of his pupil. Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower. THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS |

Peonies symbolize honor and riches. | Peonies are known for having healing qualities (hence why they are named after a physician) and their roots, seeds and flowers were formerly used in medicine. | Other Featured Florals /// Antirrhinum, Snapdragon /// Craspedia, Billy Buttons

Anemone ETYMOLOGY |

Again, we're back to Greek with Anemone, which comes from

the greek word windflower. Why wind? Because it was thought that wind opened their delicate petals. According to Greek mythology, the anemone sprang from Aphrodite's tears as she mourned the death of Adonis, her long-time lover. THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS |

These sometimes-shy flowers symbolize anticipation and excitement for something in the future. | Anemone is pronounced a-NEM-ehnee, and they are part of the Ranunculaceae family. Here's a fun flower fact: Anemones keep

growing and twisting even after they’re in a cut arrangement. They will bend toward the light and can add a beautiful gestural line to even the simplest arrangement. | Other Featured Florals /// Ranunculus, Buttercup /// Centaurea cineraria, Dusty Miller

Hellebore ETYMOLOGY |

From Middle English ellebore, from Old French ellebre, elebore, from Medieval Latin eleborus, via Latin from Ancient Greek (helléboros). The initial h was restored in English to reflect the

Ancient Greek etymology.

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS |

This flower has the darkest meaning of the bunch. Hellebores represent scandal and calumny. | Hellebores have been around long enough to have their own folklore. One of the legends surrounding hellebores involves witchcraft. It is believed to have ties to summoning demons. These flowers also have a notorious place in history books. During the Siege of Kirrha in 585 BC, hellebores were reportedly used by the Greek besiegers to poison the city's water supply. The defenders were subsequently so weakened by diarrhea that they were unable to defend the city from assault. Many of the species of hellebore are poisonous. |

& [Art] Space Beautifying the urban landscape, one mural at a time.

N

owadays, it’s common to see murals dotting buildings, store-

fronts and underpasses throughout city centers and small towns. “The sentiment that murals are vandalism or not real art is becoming all but non-existent. The legitimacy of the work speaks for itself,” explains Leah Brenner, the Boulder-based founder of And Art Space, an organization connecting local artists with Denver and Boulder-area companies and spaces looking to incorporate mural artwork into their aesthetic. “Experiencing

ting,” says Brenner. The “And” in And Art Space focusses on inclusion and accessibility. “Including murals in public spaces like schools, businesses, alleys and streets allows for art to be experienced by all people regardless of status, ethnicity, age, disability or gender. There are no rules of how it should be experienced or understood." Brenner keeps a database of artists, and when projects come up, she curates a selection of artists that fit both the client’s goals and the art direction of the project. “With this growing acceptance of street art and murals, what I hope will be maintained is the authentic voice of the artist,” she adds. “I’m always accepting submissions.”

on the horizon PEAK SEASON Looking at the bigger picture, home sellers in the luxury Denver market have had a great run over the past five years. During this time, total sales jumped by 177 percent; average days on market were more than slashed in half, 108 days in 2016 compared to 226 days in 2011; and the number of high-end condos sold in 2016 hit a record high, almost tripling since 2011. The adjacent and highly-in-demand zip codes of Cherry Creek North, Belcaro and the Denver Country Club posted the highest sales in 2016 for condos and for single-family homes and sales of luxury homes priced over $1M grew close to 20 percent in 2016 compared to 2015.

Yet spring is just around the corner and hence the peak season for the housing market is coming up! In the off season, homes take longer to sell and the sold prices are consistently lower, sometimes significantly. However, from April to September of each year the most homes are listed and sold, a trend that holds consistent for both condos and single-family homes. Is 2017 the year to consider selling your home, or to consider buying to get into a new market or a different style of home? Now is the time to prepare in advance of peak season… Carpe diem!

B

MW does not disappoint in releasing the 2017 X3 xDrive35i, a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) with potential for a family road trip or track day. With four different drive modes, the ease of moving from city to mountains is seamless. The default comfort mode relaxes the throttle for everyday driving. For

those eco-friendly drivers, the Eco-pro mode is, even more, fuel efficient by shifting at a lower RPM. The X3 combines its features to provide not only an ideal driving machine but an environmentally conscious one as well. At a red light, the X3 turns off the engine to prevent waste. While many of us enjoy cooling our car down in the summer; BMW engineers do not condone the (illegal in Colorado), practice of “puffing,” or starting up a vehicle before driving. To avoid this cushioned process, BMW has provided an app for drivers to turn fans on or open the windows on summer days. If you have forgotten where you parked, this app also allows you to flash the vehicle's lights, honk the horn and much more. Day-to-day driving has never been safer; not only is the driver looking out for hazardous conditions, but the vehicle is as well. To make the driver aware of danger, the steering wheel vibrates when nearing a potential hazard. These include; lane departures, active blind spot awareness, and Active Cruise Control. These safety features combine to maintain a safe distance from you and the driver ahead. Steering wheel vibrations are not the only way the X3 alerts the driver; break interruptions will occur for potential frontal or pedestrian collisions. February 2017 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle
