Flavor of the Month
OCTOBER 2017
I
’m just going to go out on a limb here and admit that I’m one of those people who loves a good PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte for the critics who don’t know). It’s more than just a marketing scheme created by Starbucks - I think. Here me out. We experience things through our senses, and a good ole fashion PSL is the flavor of the month. A little pumpkin, lots of spice and everything nice to do in Denver. Believe me, you’re going to need the caffeine because a lot is going on this month.
October means Month of Modern, Halloween, ICONic art, and meeting Lolita who will be at all the parties this holiday. We explored all of these topics (and much more) to prep you for an eventful 31 days. So turn over a new leaf, pull out the PSL, the unofficial mascot of the October issue, and enjoy the flavors of fall. Thanks for reading,

ORGANIC EXPERIENCES INSPIRED BY COCKTAILS WITH COCKTAIL CARAVAN

mages of vintage caravan bars started appearing on Crystal Sagan’s social media a few years ago. At the time, she owned a beverage catering company
(under the name, “3 Chicks Bartending”) and was popping up tabletop bars at every event she worked. “ The idea of a having such a cool bar that we could take from one event to another was both an inspiring dream and challenging obstacle,” says Sagan. But, after finding a 1969 Aljo Vintage Trailer, stripping it down to bare bones and transforming it into a mobile bar complete with a drop-in ice bin, refrigerator and all the necessities of a functional bar, in the spring of 2017, “Lolita” the cocktail caravan was born.

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | October 2017
“It took a lot of logistical work to put all the pieces together, but in the end, was worth every drop of sweat.” Cocktail Caravan is a full-service beverage catering and mobile bartending operation facilitating private parties, weddings, dinner parties, happy hours, large-scale corporate events and music festivals in Colorado. “Clients have the option of having us serve out of Lolita if space allows, or a tabletop bar otherwise,” explains Sagan, who also partners with a different non-profit for an event once a month. Clean, cursive handwriting cover the pages of Sagan’s notebook, where she keeps detailed notes and to-do lists for each affair. She’s everything you want in service for your event: fun and hip, yet organized and meticulous. “A certain level of authenticity and hospitality goes a long way,” Sagan says. “We’re bringing on bartenders that are approachable and happy to be there connecting with guests, so everyone involved has a positive experience. Also, some serious attention to detail never hurts.” Included in this attention to detail, Sagan creates an experience around each bar program by utilizing natural elements throughout Cocktail Caravan’s aesthetic. Rustic wooden crates filled with succulents, amethysts and candles sit ready to adorn every bar setup. Whether it be Lolita or a pop-up table, every little touch works to elevate the ambiance of each event. Sagan was originally drawn to making specialty cocktails after years of bartending and feeling like she could create something better. “I was finding myself wanting to drink things that were as clean and lively as my meals,” Sagan says. “We try to utilize seasonal produce, and take into account any food that will be served with the drinks. Most of the cocktails are a result of daydreaming in the kitchen about somewhat unexpected flavors that might work well together.” One recent recipe that comes to mind includes pineapple, carrot, red chili and lemon—served with organic vodka. With party season almost in full swing, we hope you run into Lolita.

uring October, Boulder will be alive with Month of Modern (MoM). Founded as a celebration of archi-
tecture, design, lifestyle, art and culture—MoM’s mission is to cultivate a conversation about Colorado modern and present the region as one of the nation’s most vibrant hubs of modern design. This unique month-long event—presented by HMH Architecture + Interiors and Jennifer Egbert Modern Luxury Real Estate—offers inspiring and engaging sessions from top minds in modern design, as well as, continuing education opportunities for different design disciplines. We sat down with co-founders of the event, Harvey Hine and Cherie Goff of HMH Architecture, to get the deets on what we can expect this year.
WHY DID YOU START THE MONTH OF MODERN (MOM)?
Month of Modern started as an idea to celebrate the 25th anniversary of HMH Architecture + Interiors and give back to our

CONQUERING THE SEVEN SUMMITS WITH HEMOPHILIA (CON TI N UED)
“I just want to show people with hemophilia and other chronic conditions that achieving goals is possible, so long as you have a plan ahead and take into account all of the risks,” says Chris. Of course, Bombardier’s nurses, doctors and family get nervous with Chris’s mountaineering endeavors, but they have all become key components to his success. “I am constantly in awe of who he is, what he’s accomplished and what he still wants to accomplish,” says his wife Jessica, who spent time with him in Nepal as he prepared to climb Everest this spring. “I am a part of the planning, but then I also get to watch from the outside. It’s inspiring.” Once Chris completes his seventh and final summit in Antarctica this winter, he plans to focus on some local climbing missions and delve even deeper into his work as a bleeding disorder community advocate. Among a handful of other things, like finishing his Masters, he is on the board of the National Hemophilia Foundation and Save One Life, he helped to start “Backpacks and Bleeders” which takes people with blood disorders on outdoor expeditions, and he holds a day job at “Gut Monkey”, an organization focused on experienced-based education. You can learn more about Chris’s journey to the Seven Summits and his role as an advocate within the bleeding disorder community at his website, AdventuresOfAHemophiliac.com.

EXQUISITE KITCHEN DESIGN ADDS SEXY SOPHISTICATION TO SHOWROOM KITCHEN
cheat sheet Aurum Home Technology built this kitchen in its RiNo showroom to function as a staff kitchenette, demo space for its high-end home automation technology and a space for parties and special events. Completed in October 2016, the project totals 350 square feet. SIZE UP

W
hen Dan Stern of Aurum Home Technology decided to add a fully functioning kitchen in his RiNo showroom, he turned
to his friends at Exquisite Kitchen Design knowing they would deliver the edgy, sophisticated look he was after. And oh, did they. Stern says the space at Aurum serves multiple functions for the business by acting as both a staff kitchenette and showroom by day— it includes hidden technology to show clients high-end automation in action. This kitchen is also regularly used to host parties and special events requiring full-service catering. “The kitchen is the center of any home, and the home entertainment system enhances that experience, so we wanted this to be a really special design,” explained Stern. “They definitely delivered.” As with all kitchen projects, Mikal Otten, EKD owner and designer, found the nuggets Stern and his team needed and delivered them in an unexpected way, pushing the materials and high-end details. Originally just 150 square feet, the new kitchen space is 350 square feet. Dynamic vertical lines of fumed eucalyptus veneer on the back wall draw visitors in, and a gorgeous custom bronze steel hood beckons the eye as a focal point. The port black soft quartzite stone element behind the cooktop adds a beautiful ledge for spices, while Vibia Wireflow pendant lights add interest but allow the eye to see through them. The Subzero refrigerator, freezer, wine cooler and beverage refrigerator keep things cool for parties, and Wolf ovens, a steam oven, microwave and warming drawers make life simple for caterers finishing dishes for a crowd. The unique dining table has a custom bronze steel base and fumed eucalyptus plank top, resting in an area connected to but offset from the kitchen. Guests can gather here or around the stunning port black quartzite island. “We design our kitchens to be sexy, edgy and sophisticated,” explained Otten who opened shop in 2005 drawing on a life of experience in the industry. “And not just today, but they will still look amazing in 10-15 years.” “We especially love the island, cabinet color and ceiling detail,” said Stern. “ The kitchen is the focal point for entertaining, and we love this one!”
