recently stumbled upon one of those cliche personality quizzes to see what “color” best describes your personality. I decided to put it to the test and see how accurate it was. The quiz went through a variety of basic questions such as, “Pick a weird paint color name, from ‘Salty Tear’ to ‘Mermaid Net.’ “What area would you renovate in your house first?” “Choose a world cuisine.” Mexican, duh! “What would you want to find at the end of a rainbow?” The questions went on and on, and only seemed to get stranger. Before I started the quiz, I predicted which color I thought I would be. Yellow. To my surprise, my color was white. I love white, but it is not technically color. “You have an innocent nature, without being naive. You like things to be done properly, and can’t deal with too much clutter and mess in your life.” Hmmm… Not being able to deal with a mess when you have four children (sometimes five, counting husband) and a dog, isn’t an option. While I’m not sure that am a believer in the validity of this online quiz, the process was fun. What I realized about myself, is as the seasons change, so do my cravings. This rings true for food, clothing, activities, and even colors. I love fall almost as much as I love a tenderbelly pretzel dog from Cured on a friday afternoon. The crisp air of fall will soon sweep throughout Cherry Creek. Along with that, all the offerings the season has for us Denverites to partake. Our September issue celebrates all the colors of fall fashion; traditional and nontraditional. We had so much fun with the issue and hope you enjoy it as much as we did. And whatever your color is, don’t take it too seriously...it’s ok to break the rules.

ainter and Photographer Stella Maria Baer grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, surrounded by the arts culture. Her mother was a weaver and her father owned an art gallery; her grandmother and grandfather were a sculptor and photographer, respectively. Although she describes art as the landscape of her childhood, she didn’t envision a career in it until after college.

Then I saw a photograph of a lunar eclipse, and I made a painting of the moon. In the sphere, I found a balance of limitation and freedom, a way I could experiment with color and bleeds within a space that felt both abstract and definite, infinite and finite.

At first, her paintings and drawings were something she performed in secret, not feeling pulled to share her work with anyone else. In graduate school, Baer landed a job as a studio and research assistant for artist Titus Kaphar. “Titus cast a vision for me for of what it meant to be a working artist,” says Baer. “He gave me critiques on my paintings and answered questions I had about paint and color. Titus taught me to treat my work as something sacred.” She enrolled in studio classes in painting and drawing — one class even consisted of creating one hundred paintings a week! During this process of rapid growth, between studio classes and critiques with Kaphar, Baer transitioned her work from being private to public. She also came to the realization that she wanted to be a painter. After her graduate thesis show, she began selling her pieces and, eventually, stepped out into the world to paint full-time. “In my work, I explore the mythology of the desert and the cosmology of space,” says Baer. “When I was in high school, I wanted to leave New Mexico and never come back. I went to college and graduate school in the Northeast and never thought I’d live in the West again. But a couple years ago, I drove through the Mojave Desert and Navajo Nation, places we’d gone to on road trips growing up but that I had forgotten. When I got back to the northeast, I was haunted by those places. My work since then has been a way of coming to terms with the pull I feel back to the southwest. I’ve found in painting moons and planets a way to bleed out my memory of growing up in the desert while still moving into another space.” Baer goes on to explain how before she started painting spheres, she often felt “distracted” by accidental things that occurred in her paintings like colors bleeding together. “I’d often force myself to focus on the subject at hand. But as time went on I decided I needed to explore the things I had dismissed as distractions — the moments in my painting that felt out of control and more like play than anything else. My ideas for paintings usually start off as secrets, as a desire to make something that returns again and again, growing within me, becoming stronger and, eventually, ends up outside myself, with a life of its own,” says Baer. For our Bikers & Babes shoot captured by the talented Noah Berg, we partnered with stylist

Wendy Talmon and Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson, a unique creative pair, who added edge to timeless classics. (Think denim, leather and more leather!) Completing the style trifecta was illustrator Sarah Nicholsen of Petite Press who brought her own creative stylings to create the dreamy, illustrated backgrounds. This is admittedly not the first time a motto-inspired shoot has been done: you might remember the September 1991 issue of Vogue and the iconic “Wild at Heart” spread featuring supermodels Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder and Stephanie Seymour. Styled by the legendary Grace Coddington, fashion was never again quite the same. Fast-forward 25 years (which, coincidentally, many fashion experts believe to be the full lifecycle of a fashion trend), and it's time once again to revel in rebel fashion. “Whether you're a hard-core biker or just love that classic biker look, you can incorporate some edgier pieces into your own style,” says Talmon. And who doesn’t love a little edge? We stuck with basic black-and-white, adding pops of Pantone's fall 2016 color lines for a bold statement: greys, burgundy, tans and teals. We hope these pages inspire you to make your own bold statement, to fear not the edge of fall, and to always stay wild at heart. CONTINUED >

With a diverse background and no-holdsbarred approach to his craft, New York-based Fashion Designer Viktor Luna (and once Project Runway All Stars contestant) draws from his varied and unique experiences to create his unapologetic fashion lines. With pieces that juxtapose timeless silhouettes with fantastical and futuristic elements, Luna’s lines are a balance of the classic and the edgy. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and having grown up in Los Angeles, California, Luna has a long family history in clothing and fashion, coming from three generations of tailors and seamstresses. A need to see his ideas and fashion fantasies realized tangibly as he was exposed to more and more of the industry, kick-started Luna’s career. His unique designs have become more and more intricate with time, tying together a multitude of elements in each line — from fringes to leg harnesses and more — creating an overall visual experience with his fashion. With the overarching goal to inspire with his work, Luna’s pieces are meant to bring about emotions and serve as a catalyst for thought and reflection. This November 2–5, Luna will be partnering with Massif Studios on a Fashion Week showcase to exhibit his Spring and Summer 2017 line. I love that it can be such an inspiring resource for people who have food restrictions.” “[The name] Among the Colors comes from a quote from the 19th-century poet Rainer Marie Rilke. ‘Painting is something that takes place among the colors. One has to leave them alone completely, so that they can settle the matter among themselves.’ I love this quote because it speaks to the creative process as an act of surrender and freedom,” says Krudener.

• 1 peach • 1 avocado • 1 cucumber • 1 heirloom or red tomato

Grilled Peach & Avocado Quinoa Salad with honey mustard vinaigrette

• 1 cup cherry tomatoes • 1 cup uncooked quinoa • handful of basil For honey mustard vinaigrette • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar I like to make the quinoa and let it set out to room temperature first. Then I will turn on the grill to hot and chop all of the veggies. Once the quinoa is room temperature, add in the cucumber, tomatoes and basil first. I put the basil in there as whole leaves because I like the flavor. Mix all the dressing ingredients together with a whisk and then pour over salad. Mix the dressing into the quinoa salad. Last — but not least — I grill the peach face-down for about four minutes. Once the peach is done, slice it and place on top of salad. Garnish with the avocado and add sea salt before serving.

Kale Pesto Risotto with bacon-braised greens

• 3 cups vegetable broth • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 8 slices of bacon • 4 cups of finely chopped green kale • 1 cup basil • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1 white onion, chopped. • 1 tablespoon of butter or ghee • 1 cup of shredded pecorino • 1/2 cup of pine nuts In a large frying pan, cook the bacon. Once cooked, set bacon aside to cool. Save

the pan with bacon grease for the greens. In a medium pot, heat the butter over medium heat for about a minute. Add onion, and cook for five minutes covered. Add in rice and stir constantly for one minute. Add three cups of broth and 1/2 cup of wine. Bring to a boil. Once risotto boils, reduce to simmer and cook 20–25 minutes uncovered until all the liquid has dissipated. In a food processor, place two cups of the kale with the basil and pulse for about 15 seconds until the kale is fine. Add olive oil and half of the pecorino. Season with salt and pepper and pulse until combined. In a separate pan, toast the pine nuts for just a few minutes over medium heat. Once the risotto in finished cooking, add in the pesto and stir well. Reheat the greased pan and cook the rest of the kale in the bacon grease over medium heat. This should take about five minutes. Now you are all ready to assemble. First place the risotto in the bowl. Garnish in rows the bacon, braised greens, pine nuts and the additional pecorino.

As with everything on Among the Colors, both of these recipes are gluten free and cow dairy free. They are also corn, soy and sugar free.
