rowing up in my home was like an artist’s jungle gym. My parents and two older sisters (I’ll never let them forget that) are all artists, each with their own medium of choice.

My dad the Renaissance man, has always enjoyed woodworking, photography and even had a violin making phase; my mom would make felt bags, commissioned paintings and now focuses on her leather making; my sister Caitlin is a talented musician and my other sister Lauren does poetry and drawing. The house was always buzzing with creativity; tools of the trade (whatever it may be) always on hand, and the opportunity to hone your craft was always an option. Honestly, I’ll admit this is something I regret not taking advantage of more.

From being constantly surrounded by arts and crafts, I learned from a very young age that not everything had to be bought from a store. In fact, it’s always more special when you support local artists. My mom, a now tenured Boise Saturday Market attendee, would have us hop around from booth to booth, and each weekend I was exposed to amazingly talented people. To this day my mom has a booth at the market and when I go back to my hometown of Boise, Idaho I hang out with fellow market people down at her booth.

While working on the Arts & Culture issue, it was exciting to meet so many different artists in Boulder and Denver. Each city is an imaginative hub where self-expression is encouraged through any outlet, and as I learned with my interactions this issue, it’s never too late to embrace your artistic side. It’s safe to say that just about every feature is about an artist in some sense of the word, because art is in everything.

We hope you enjoying reading this issue as much as we enjoyed making it. To all of the makers and shakers out there – this one’s for you.

BACK TO BASICS: WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE TRADE OF JEWELRY MAKING?

My mother opened Ooh Aah Jewelry in Albuquerque. It was a dream come true for a 10-year-old to be around jewelry all day, so I started working in her store any chance I got. During my time working there, one of my mom's employees started to show me the ropes of making jewelry, which I loved right away. My first project was when a customer came into the store for a custom necklace for her wedding. We didn't have exactly what she wanted in the store so I made her and her bridal party jewelry. I really enjoyed the process of working with the bride, and after that it became a passion of mine.

TELL US WHEN SARAH O. JEWELRY BEGAN AND WHY?

The idea for Sarah O. began about seven years ago when our original store, Ooh Aah Jewelry in Denver, started to make custom jewelry for customers who didn't find what they were looking for either in our store or other jewelry stores. I've always loved designing jewelry for others and dreamed of creating my own line of engagement rings so when we ran out of room at Ooh Aah Jewelry, I knew it was time to open Sarah O., dedicated to custom jewelry and the Sarah O. line.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My inspiration comes largely from vintage jewelry; I could look at vintage jewelry all day. I am always amazed by how detailed vintage jewelry is and how they made these pieces by hand. Today, we have 24

software that helps us create and carve waxes to be precise in creating our jewelry, but to know they didn't have that back then is truly amazing. Vintage jewelry is so timeless. Some of the most beautiful jewelry I've ever seen is over a 100 years old and I hope that someday my designs still hold this incredible beauty.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGNS AESTHETIC?

Most our jewelry is minimal with a spin of vintage.

DESIGNERS YOU ADMIRE?

I admire so many designers. I would say some of my favorite designers right now include Liven, Rebecca Overman and Gem and Blue.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS WHEN STARTING A NEW PIECE?

When we start a custom piece, we usually begin by looking at the stones we will be using since the stones will largely influence the design. From there, we start sketching design ideas with our customers to come up with a rough idea of what the piece will look like. With the sketch, we can then have a 3D rendering made on the computer to review and make adjustments to. Once that looks good, we have a wax model of the piece made to review once again and finally, the actual piece is made by our jeweler.

WHAT CAN YOUR LOVELY CUSTOMERS EXPECT FOR THE FUTURE OF SARAH O. JEWELRY?

We are excited to start to expanding our own line of jewelry. We are headed to a couple of the largest gem shows in the United States this year and can't wait to find new stones to create some truly one-of-akind pieces this year.

rock show isn’t usually a performance you watch at the ballet, but Denver choreographer Garrett Ammon set out to change that. Aimed to bring dance to a wider audience, he created the Rock Ballet. At Wonderbound, an American dance company of just 10 dancers, Ammon sought to reimagine the way most saw aspects of a typical ballet—with live music.

Denver supergroup, made up of the Chimney Choir and Ian Cooke Band, will bring the music of David Bowie and Queen to life starting February 13. Raised on six-foot high platforms above the dancers, Ammon is using theatrical lighting and rock performance lighting as a way to embrace the rock show ambience. Although the band is playing music of classic rockers, they'll also add their own personal touch to the aesthetic.

The Rock Ballet is composed of three separate performances, two created by Ammon and originally performed years ago.

“Love of My Life,” originally created in 2007, features music from the band Queen and

tells the story of a relationship between a mother and son.

The supergroup will play tunes ranging from the ever-popular “We Are The Champions” to lesser-known works like, “It’s a Beautiful Day.” They’ll even play “Bohemian Raphsody” without any pre-recordings—a feat that Queen couldn’t even do.

“It’s the first ballet I created in Denver,” Ammon says.

“It’s a daring endeavor because people have such strong feelings tied to their music. But it’s an exciting way to dive into the community in a daring way.”

“An Occasional Dream,” originally created in 2008, features eight songs from David Bowie and tells a biblical story in an irreverent way. For example, in this work, God is portrayed as a woman.

“We go from the creation of the universe to Jesus,” Ammon says. “We leave it for the audience to interpret it in their own way, as we created space for commentary on religion; like the relationship between God and the serpent.”

The opening work and world premiere, “Unbroken Sky,” features choreography by company artist and dancer Sarah Tallman.

Music, theater and dance-lovers alike can catch one of the five performances in the Denver area between February 13, 2016 and February 21, 2016 at Wonderbound.

MarioZoots.com Ten years ago, a little problem solving sparked Mario Zoots passion for modern photographic collage and appropriation.

With no more room for paintings in his Capitol Hill apartment, Zoots began making small collages with images he found in discounted and damaged books, abandoned photographs and old magazines.

Initially, he liked how he could work small and keep pieces compact, but eventually this medium became his main voice of artistic expression. He explores the Pop Era through reproduction, duplication and multiples, while incorporating reoccurring themes of surrealism.

Zoots received his BFA from Metropolitan State University and MA from the University of Denver. He is now an adjunct professor at Metropolitan State University in the fine art foundations department.

“Psychology, mythology and the paranormal are influential to my appropriation based works,” Zoots says. “Re-imagination is my signature style.”

WhereWoodMeetsSteel.com Creativity can be expressed in many forms, and for co-founders Ryan Dirksen and Marina Chotzinoff, their old careers in cooking and web design were put on the backburner so they could carve their own path.

That path involved their favorite material to work with – wood. They design and build beautiful and functional pieces of furniture inspired by trees themselves.

Dirksen, the main founder, is a self-taught artist who began collecting tools and learning the woodworking trade until they opened Where Wood Meets Steel in 2007. Eventually Dirksen and Chotzinoff bought their own space in 2011 and now have three full-time employees helping with local and national (plus a few global) projects for individuals and businesses.

Their favorite pieces are those highlighting the unique quality of each slab with minimal, clean lines that are timeless in style and build.

HIMClothing.com Hugh Hartigan and Chris Reynders, artists and self-taught tailors based in Denver, are both part owner, designers and creative directors of HIM Clothing, a locally-sourced, handmade menswear line.

Hartigan and Reynders are childhood friends who taught themselves how to design ties, pocket squares and bow ties. Their main tool of the trade are two 1950s Singer sewing machines.

Thanks to a handbook on how to make neckties by David Coffin and a whole lot of trial and error, the duo now design custom-printed accessories meant to last as heirlooms.

Their artistic training in everything from drawing and ceramics, to lithography and painting, fueled the creativity needed for fashion design. A strong personal sense of style also helped. Each design starts out as a simple sketch and the process begins from there.

Winter-Session.com Winter Session’s roots weren’t always in the Five Points neighborhood of Denver. The now well-known shop originally started as a side project in the storefront of Tanya Fleisher and Roy Katz’s shop in Chicago.

“We bought a couple of old Singer sewing machines and started playing around with some basic bag and apron shapes made from materials we found at the thrift store,” Fleisher says.

One thing that has remained the same is Fleisher and Katz’s interest (and experience) in sewing. Katz learned his sewing technique from his mother and integrated this technique into projects during his years at art school, and later, in architecture school. Fleisher learned how to sew during school and also used sewing in her sculptural projects.

The husband-and-wife duo draws inspiration from all over the world, their two years spent living in Mumbai, India being the biggest influence. Mumbai happens to be where they first heard the cryptic phrase “winter session” from a lone businessman’s short interaction.

"To us it signified -- and still signifies -- shift and change," says Fleisher.

or being the most important meal of the day, breakfast sure does get overlooked. Whether you’re getting yourself out the door or the kids ready for school (or both), those morning hours can be the most stressed out, hectic and crowded ones all day. Which is why going out for breakfast doesn’t get the same sort of fanfare as going out for dinner, or even lunch.

Revelry Kitchen, which opened last summer in west Highland, is giving breakfast its due. This is a neighborhood spot that’s welcoming to all; it’s not uncommon to see every generation represented in the sunny dining room. It’s the kind of place that every community corner should have but doesn’t – a comfortable spot at which to eat well-prepared, creative dishes.

Every time I’m at Revelry I’m reminded that breakfast is my favorite meal to go out for, but rarely do. Helmed by chef Enrique Socarras (formerly of Cuba Cuba), the menu includes a nice blend of sweet and savory, with the addictive pumpkin cinnamon rolls being my favorite sweet. Not too heavy on the pumpkin flavor, the rolls are topped with crunchy Tender Belly bacon, pecans and a cream cheese frosting you’ll want to lick off the plate.

Other sweets include a rotating selection of muffins (banana Nutella is popular), churro doughnuts and bacon chocolate chip pancakes.

The egg-based dishes are great as well, especially the Northside Rancheros with its richly flavored chile rojo. The sauce coats two eggs (try them over easy), fresh corn tortillas, refritos and cheese.

And it’s not all breakfast foods, either. Revelry, which stays open until 3 p.m., also has a robust lunch selection. There are plenty of salads, a heavy Cubano sandwich that shows off Socarras’s Cuban heritage and the obligatory burger.

Straddling the line between breakfast and lunch is the excellent fried chicken and waffles plate. The waffles aren’t the sugar bombs you’re used to, and the crispy chicken is especially good with the accompanying ham gravy.

Wash it all down with a cocktail – Revelry has a full bar to make your day that much better. The mimosa and bloody Mary give generous pours for their $4 and $5 price tags, or get a bigger buzz with the Lemon Poppy, made with Tru lemon vodka, Grand Poppy liqueur and Colorado Tonix.

The atmosphere and food are worth the visit, but what might be most impressive about Revelry is the pricing. In a city where $14 cocktails and $20 breakfasts are becoming commonplace, nearly everything on the menu is in the $10-12 range, and drinks top out at $8. It’s not trying to be a destination restaurant so much as an everyday eatery, and prices are in line with that philosophy.

With concept and upscale restaurants opening at breakneck speed in Denver, it’s a breath of fresh air to see an unfussy eatery that’s just about the food and community it serves. I can’t think of a better way to start your day.

Homemade pop tarts are a versatile food trend we can get on board with. Pick savory or sweet, it’s non-processed and delicious; and it’s a meal you’ll want to savor and come back for more any time of day.

Renee LaLonde is an expert in homemade pop tarts. She launched the beginnings of her food truck, Bakin’ Bakery, with the help of a Kickstarter campaign in 2013.

“It’s a sweet and savory rustic American approach on wheels,” LaLonde says.

Her most prominent inspiration to open a bakery was her grandmothers— master cake and pie bakers. She learned most of her baking techniques and recipes from them.
