Choose Your Own Summer Adventure!
The weather is heating up here in the Scenic City and summer is in full swing! I love seeing the city buzzing with tourists, camp groups, and locals patronizing their favorite patio spots. With this issue we highlight some of our favorite summer activities, places to visit, and people who will encourage you to make your own Summer Adventure!
We had the honor to catch up with Signal Mountain native and the reigning Miss Tennessee for America, Claire Portilla. Claire is poised to represent Tennessee in the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas on August 24. We can't wait to see her in action, and we send her our heartfelt support and well wishes!
We take a short trip to the gateway of the Cumberland Plateau to visit the luxury tiny home community The Retreat by Oakstone. Founder and CEO, Chip Hayes, had a vision for a unique vacation destination that would bring his family closer together and closer to nature. In 2018, he broke ground on their first tiny home community, The Retreat at Deer Lick Falls, located in the quiet community of Monteagle, TN.
For a truly unique jewelry experience, we popped in on our friends at the Finery House. Located in Cambridge Square, owner Janie Colbaugh saw the need for an intimate jewelry shopping experience, so she curated The Finery House to serve that vision. From traditional engagement rings to permanent gold jewelry, Janie and her team can help make your next jewelry buying experience one you won't soon forget.
Summertime for me means taking things a little slower. I relish the gift of watching my kids play with their friends in the cul-de-sac, long days on the baseball fields, and letting my youngest son stay up "just five more minutes." Whether it's on the patio at Rosecomb, at the rooftop pool at Common House, or in your own backyard, I hope you take things a little slower this July. I can't wait to see you around town enjoying all that Chattanooga has to offer.

MISS TENNESSEE FOR AMERICA
ARTICLE BY EVE ROBLES PHOTOGRAPHY BY IVEY PHOTO
Chattanooga Native, Claire Portilla, Sets Her Sights on the Miss America Title
Chattanooga’s own, Claire Portilla, has entered the pageant arena and she is aiming for the Miss America crown. A Signal Mountain native, Claire secured the 2023 Miss Tennessee crown and is headed to compete at the national level in the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas on August 24. A firsttime pageant participant, Claire embarked on this new endeavor with encouragement from a former Mrs. Tennessee for America.
“I am not a spotlight person, so I really had to get out of my comfort zone to achieve this. I went into the experience with no expectations other than a way to grow myself. I wanted to stay true to myself and not fit a mold,” shared Portilla. Candidly, Claire highlighted that the most surprising aspect of the pageant world has been not only the tremendous outpouring of support but also being a part of an organization that is so uplifting. Whatever negative preconceived notions some may have of

the pageant system are quite the opposite. Portilla emphasizes, “The women around me are amazing, sweet and have awesome stories about life to share. I hope we can break any stigma either starting with me or the other queens around me.”
Embracing this new challenge with a positive outlook and grit has made the pageant world a rewarding endeavor. From meeting amazing women and connecting with various organizations to the glitz and glamour of every moment, Claire highlights that the most valuable part of her experience has been the children she gets to interact with daily. “Their faces and eyes light up when I get to know them and I know that they feel special. Something that I learned while traveling for children’s ministry is that when a child can sit there and say, ‘You’re who? ...and you’re CHOOSING to be with me? To talk with me?’ It absolutely blows their minds that someone wants to get

to know them. This is the most rewarding piece to my story— making children feel loved, seen and known.”
After a brief period away from Chattanooga, Claire realized just how special our bustling city is and is beaming with pride to represent Tennessee in the national competition. “A huge reason that I love the state of Tennessee is the people. When I look at my life in Chattanooga and in Tennessee, I think of the people. There is a sense of kindness, drive and adventure. I feel so inspired here. I look around and see my friends and family creating their own businesses, getting

involved in the community and giving back. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to live. It truly is one of the most driven cities ever and it is clear how much the citizens of Chattanooga love their city through their acts of service. Growth defines this city and I can’t wait to see how it will continually change and impact our state.”
With sights set on securing the Miss America title, Claire is crystal clear on her ultimate vision—to create her own nonprofit in Tennessee that provides children the opportunity to secure a higher education minus the financial burdens that come along with it. “I want to create a scholarship opportunity and support many local community centers in our city.” With a current scholarship goal in the works, Portilla is determined to reward the first scholarship recipient by the fall of 2023. “I have a family who supported me so much to get where I am now and I want to give that same support to children in the state of Tennessee.”

Aspiring for new heights, Claire poignantly and eloquently adds, “Dreams are scary and hard to reach sometimes and, yes, we all have moments of failure, but the beautiful thing is we also have moments of triumph. Let’s change our perspective of failure and start to be thankful for it. The strength you gain means so much more than the pain you feel in the midst. So keep reaching, working and saying thank you.”
Chattanooga is such a beautiful place in the summer! I look around and just feel in awe most of the time! I like to be outdoors whether it’s sipping coffee at my favorite coffee house, Mean Mug, or walking through Coolidge Park with my dog who loves to swim in the river!
There is an abundance of events and pop-ups and that’s what I love about summer in Chattanooga, you can go for a walk and end up in an outdoor market, meeting new friends and vendors and just find yourself in another world!

The Finery House
AN INTIMATE FINE JEWELRY EXPERIENCE
An exclusive jewelry experience, The Finery House is a full-service jeweler that curates a collection for your unique style. With over a decade of industry experience, founder Janie Colbaugh tells us, “It became clear to me that there was a need for a more intimate, client-focused jewelry shopping experience. No glass cases, no excessive markups, just a desire to make fine jewelry accessible to everyone.”
The bedrock of what The Finery House stands on is its clientele relationships. “We are meant to be more than a store. We are so grateful for the opportunity to be

invited into some of the most memorable moments of our clients' lives. From the man who comes in to select the perfect ring for the perfect girl, to the woman who's looking for designs using the diamonds her great-grandmother left her and all the anniversaries, retirements, birthdays and other milestones, we will always do our best to serve others and spread the love.”
Keeping with their mission to create an intimate jewelry shopping experience for their customers, The Finery House is also home to Gilted Thread. For the last two and a half years, Gilted Thread has provided a place for customers to purchase permanent jewelry for every generation of shopper.
Customers are treated to unique shopping experiences as they get custom permanent jewelry from Gilted Thread. After perusing the range of options offered by The Finery House, customers of Gilted Thread get to choose their preferred thread or chain, all of which are made of 14k gold. Styles vary from modern to classic style chains, and can be fashioned as necklaces, bracelets, or anklets. Before attaching the jewelry, customers can also add special charms such as birthstone links.
Abby Callahan of The Finery House, comments, “The best thing about getting to do Gilted Thread is the connection we make with people, and the meaning behind the pieces they choose. I’ve met several ladies who have had or are currently enduring breast cancer treatments, and they chose our "Survivor" charm. Or women who have lost their mother choose our "Mama Dearest" charm to honor their mother’s memory. So many of our pieces are designed to tell a story, and we absolutely love the way our clients embrace that.”
To see what The Finery House has to offer or to get your own permanent jewelry, visit The Finery House website (thefineryhouse.com) or the Gilted Thread website (giltedthread.com) to find pop-up shops occurring around the Chattanooga area.
