There's no place better in the summer than Chattanooga. The city opens its arms to welcome guests and locals alike to its lively music festivals, active outdoor life, and beautiful al fresco dining. Whether you're spending the day on the lake, or like my family, at the ballfields, there's something for everyone in our Scenic City. In this issue we take a look at the triumphant return of Riverbend after a two year hiatus. We also learn more about the new exhibit at the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center which features Alexander Bonnyman Jr., a brave Marine who was killed in action during World War II. We explore easy lake living with Carefree Boat Club. This club has people across the state re-imagining what boating can look like by taking stress of boat ownership off the table for its members, and giving them a concierge experience instead. This month, we are proud to feature The Launch Pad. This local nonprofit, started by entrepreneur Scottie Bowman, gives women and their children a safe space to heal from addiction and begin their lives anew. Learn more about how you can support this organization at lpchatt.org. Whether you find yourself out on the water, going on a hike, or just spending a little extra time on your front porch, I hope you find what you're looking for by celebrating summer in Chattanooga. This city is the perfect place to choose your own SUMMER ADVENTURE!

Riverbend AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS, THE AREA’S LARGEST MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE CHATTANOOGA RIVERFRONT
Returns
For 39 years, the Riverbend Festival has been a cornerstone of the Chattanooga summer scene. The organization celebrated that accomplishment in June at the annual Riverbend Festival. Officially established in 1982 by Chattanooga locals, the event was created as an avenue through which the community could come together and celebrate their beloved city. Eventually, as the event garnered more attention, Riverbend became nationalized, with attendees traveling from all over the country. The festival ranks in the top 10% of all festivals in the United States and boasts three stages with a wide variety of performers from nearly every music genre. Beyond Riverbend’s incredible live music performances, there are fireworks, picturesque views, arts and crafts, food vendors, and more. The event is held along the Tennessee Riverfront, allowing those in attendance the opportunity to fully experience the city’s scenic views.

Locals and visitors also explore Chattanooga beyond the festival, from shopping or eating at local downtown businesses to renting kayaks and paddle boards to explore the river. Riverbend became a signature entertainment event for Chattanooga, with an average of more than 50,000 people in attendance and regional earnings of $6.8 million. The festival’s website delves into its impact on the local economy, asserting that the investment audiences make for the event increases the county’s tax collections by $800,000 and supplies $30 million in economic impact. This impact demonstrates how Riverbend is a Chattanooga business committed to gaining more foot traffic for the city, showing visitors and locals what makes Chattanooga unique. In 2020, COVID-19 contributed to a two-year cancellation of the iconic event. After this intermission, Chattanooga’s famed local music festival returned to the stage for its long-awaited performance. The festival took place June 3-5 and featured 23 acts with headliners Cage The Elephant, Jason Isabell and the 400 Unit, and Brothers Osbourne. Chattanooga native, Leslie Jordan, was also in attendance. Despite having to downsize the event due to pandemic concerns, Riverbend sold out of all VIP packages and had a largely successful turnout, with over 15,000 people in attendance eager to hear the featured performances. For 39 years, the Riverbend Festival has showcased the Chattanooga area and all that it offers. Despite hardships, the event organizers have demonstrated their commitment to uplifting the community, encouraging tourism, and providing memorable entertainment. Now, after the festival’s triumphant resurgence, locals and visitors alike can expect the esteemed event to dominate the streets of downtown Chattanooga again next summer.

LIVE CAREFREE ARTICLE BY KIMBER BLANKENSHIP PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAREFREE BOAT CLUB
Carefree Boat Club Offers Peace of Mind and Endless Time on the Water
On bright sunny days, there is nothing better than being out on the water with friends and family. This can come at a high price tag when you consider the cost of a boat as well as docking and storage. The upkeep alone can be costly and takes commitment. If that doesn’t sound appealing, there is an alternative. Carefree Boat Club of Cameron Harbor Chattanooga offers membership packages to rent from a fleet of boats with unlimited rentals and reciprocity at 115 locations across the country. An opportunity like this seemed almost too good to be true, so we reached out to Miranda Stout, Membership Director, to learn more.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Anyone over 25 years of age is welcome to join! Safety and fun are top priorities with Carefree Boat Club, which is why all members, regardless of age, must complete requirements to secure a NASBLA-approved boater safety license within 30 days of membership, which the club is happy to assist with. It’s important to note that a valid boater’s license must be secured before requesting a reciprocal reservation. Memberships are residence-based with member and co-member options, so couples can easily share one membership. There are several package options based on the length of membership and usage. Packages start as low as $379 a month. The fan favorite package is $429 a month and comes with availability at two locations, unlimited boating, a variety of boats, and nationwide reciprocity. If exploring new places is what you are after, all packages allow for three visits at each Carefree Boat Club location each year. Once a membership is finalized, you are ready to make your first reservation. Depending on your package, there

are options to book on weekdays or weekends. Reservations can be made for early morning, late evening, or overnight excursions pending approval from the club. Boats available for reservation include surf boats, tri-toons, and a double-decker complete with a slide. Carefree Boat Club wants the best for their members, which is why all inventory includes high-end, brand new, luxury boats. Additionally, members have access to a brand-new fleet each year. If water sports are what you are after, even more options are available. As a member, you will have the option to reserve a Tahoe or Avalon tri-toon with enough horsepower to ski, wakeboard, or tube behind. Crownline Surf Boats are also included with the fleet. Members are welcome to invite non-members to share in the fun. To gain some insight from a local Carefree Boat Club member, we reached out to Jena Pugh. Jena and her family relocated to Chattanooga from the West Coast. They love being out on the water but did not want to commit to owning a boat. To have the best of both worlds, they turned to Carefree Boat Club. Jena and her family have been members since last March. Jena commented on the smooth enrollment process, streamlined reservations, and incredible staff. Jena stated that while all of their time spent on the water has been great, they particularly enjoy taking out the double-decker boat with a slide and watching the kids have fun. Jena told us, “One day of boating is what the monthly dues are.” Jena’s advice to anyone who is hesitant about joining is, “Don’t hesitate. It’s a win-win.” If you love boats but don’t want the commitment of owning, reach out to Carefree Boat Club of Cameron Harbor by phone (423) 591-6443 or email at tennesseegroup@carefreeboats.com.

THE LEGACY OF ALEXANDER BONNYMAN JR. ARTICLE BY RYLEIGH ROBERTS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR HERITAGE CENTER
THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR HERITAGE CENTER OPENS NEW BONNYMAN JR. EXHIBIT
Located in the heart of downtown Chattanooga, the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center is dedicated to telling the stories of Medal of Honor recipients. The Medal of Honor is the United States government’s highest military decoration, and it is awarded for distinguished acts of valor. The first Medal of Honor was awarded in Chattanooga, putting the museum in the perfect location to teach people about our nation’s heroes. Director of Education at the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center, Hannah Sher, talked with Chattanooga City Lifestyle about the museum and the opening of an exciting new exhibit. The museum covers a broad span of history, starting with the stories of the first medal recipients, moving throughout history up to the present day. The Heritage Center’s key focus is on education. This focus is shown through their mission to instill visitors with the same values “demonstrated by Medal of Honor recipients: patriotism, courage, citizenship, integrity, sacrifice, and commitment.” As the embodiment of these values, and the first significant addition to the museum’s permanent gallery, the new exhibit will tell the story of Alexander Bonnyman Jr., a notable recipient of the Medal of Honor. In their commitment to prioritize and celebrate stories, Hannah Sher talked specifically about the Bonnyman exhibit saying, “It’s a huge honor that the Bonnyman family chose us to be the official repository of all things related to Alexander Bonnyman Jr.” Sher explained that the family enabled the museum to share Bonnyman Jr.’s story, giving him the recognition he deserves. Alexander Bonnyman Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1910. At two years old, he and his family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where his father was the president of a large coal company. Hannah Sher described Bonnyman Jr. before his service, saying that he initially was a “restless” man who was “always seeking adventure.” Bonnyman Jr. would soon enlist in the Army Air Corps in 1932 as a Flying Cadet and be sent to flight

school. Later that same year, he was honorably discharged, and he went to work alongside his father at the coal company before acquiring his own mine in New Mexico in 1938. When the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred in 1941, Bonnyman Jr. self-enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Private and was promoted to First Lieutenant only a year later. In 1943, Bonnyman Jr. fought in the three-day Battle of Tarawa for control of the island. He gave his life in the battle, and this heroic action posthumously earned him a Medal of Honor award presented to his daughter in 1947. His remains were never recovered due to the chaos of the war which led to the Army Graves Registration Service being wrong about where the bodies were buried. However, his grandson later joined a nonprofit that was able to recover his remains in 2015 and bring them back for reburial. Hannah Sher explains why this exhibit is so significant, saying, “This story is not just something that happened during WWII. It ties all the way up to the present day.” She continued, explaining that “when the visitors interact with the exhibit, they will garner an understanding that this is living history continuing on even now.” The focus on living history is paramount to education as many may feel history does not apply to their present lives when in reality, is that history is a constant continuation—collections of connecting stories. This emphasis on stories is what makes this and many other exhibits at the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center unique. They teach us not only about the medal earned, but also about the stories of Bonnyman Jr. and countless others who have had a significant influence on the world today. The museum prioritizes diversity in its programming with something for everyone. Visit their website at www.mohhc.org for information about special events, including exhibit openings, lectures, and book clubs. The National Medal of Honor Heritage Center is located at 2 West Aquarium Way and is open Monday-Saturday from 9:00AM-5:00PM and Sunday from 10:00AM-3:30PM.
“IT’S A HUGE HONOR THAT THE BONNYMAN FAMILY CHOSE US TO BE THE OFFICIAL REPOSITORY OF ALL THINGS RELATED TO ALEXANDER BONNYMAN JR.” — Hannah Sher

Heal the Woman, Heal the Family LAUNCH PAD NO. 2 OPENS IT DOORS AS A HAVEN FOR WOMEN IN RECOVERY ARTICLE BY KIMBER BLANKENSHIP PHOTOGRAPHY BY BELINDA MARTIN
When Scottie Bowman won her battle with addiction, she knew she wanted to do something related to recovery. It wouldn’t be until a few years later that she would get the idea to turn a rental home of hers into a recovery house. Scottie set to work to remodel the five bed, three bath home into what it is today, The Launch Pad. A friend of Bowman’s helped her come up with the name and the Launch Pad has been launching women into recovery and into a new life ever since. In the two years since the Launch Pad opened its doors, the organization has come a long way. Through word of mouth, Bowman was able to organize a Board of Directors, obtain 501(c)(3) status, purchase additional land, and build a second home with a generous donation from Karen Hutton. Launch Pad No. 2 officially opened in June of this year. Scottie and the Board have crafted an inspiring vision for The Launch Pad and the women who seek healing in these homes. The Launch Pad aims to help women overcome their addictions and heal their families. The Launch Pad is approved by local drug courts and parole boards. They have very strict rules to stay compliant
and to ensure the women are successful with their treatment plans. Women must have a sponsor before setting up residence in the home, which Bowman says is because it is important for the women to learn how to self-advocate and ask for help. It’s not always easy, but it’s the first step towards healing. The women are not left to fight this fight alone. Kelly Weber, who is five years sober herself, is reaching back to help bring women to a place of healing. Kelly lives on-site, helps the women find employment, assists with setting up family visitations, arranges for travel when needed, and helps them reintegrate into society. Launch Pad residents attend community-based AA and NA meetings along with weekly house meetings where the twelve steps and other materials are addressed and reinforced. Many companies and small businesses throughout Chattanooga have also stepped forward to welcome women who need employment. If you are a business owner who would like to be considered for employment placement, Bowman welcomes the opportunity to discuss possible placements. From its inception two years ago, the Launch Pad has housed 37 women. The

Launch Pad, and all involved, are in the business of getting families back together. Scottie says, “If you heal the woman, you heal the family.” To do this, the organization has reached out to the community for assistance providing medical and dental procedures, make-overs, clothes donations, and other items the women need during their time in the home. Through the generosity of the community, they have been able to help women heal, grow, and reintegrate into their families and the community. The Launch Pad now has two homes for women to begin their journey to healing, but Bowman says they are not stopping there. The organization hopes to team up with other organizations to obtain donations where they can provide business attire for interviews. Scottie says the ultimate goal is to have five homes that will hold up to eight to ten women at a time and to build a low-income six-plex where women can live with their families when they are ready. Scottie and the Board are also looking forward to the day when they can build a Healing House that would be a community multi-use house. There, they would be able to hold meetings, visits, and host life skills classes to set the women up for success after they leave The Launch Pad. If you would like to get involved or would like more information, please reach out to The Launch Pad by phone (423) 902-4822 or by email at help@lpchatt.org.
