LIFESTYLE LETTER

July - Our Summer Fun and Adventure Issue Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax! Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. Some of our favorite summertime activities we enjoy are going out for icecream with the kids, eating al fresco in and nearby towns, discovering new day and weekend trips, going down the shore to LBI and reconnecting with great friends. In this issue, we wanted to share fun local ways to get out and explore together, from local best places to eat outdoors, to a great nearby daytrip to Grounds for Sculpture. As Independence Day comes around, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans in our community and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life to protect others. We want to thank all veterans, those still serving and all their loved ones for your service. We hope you can enjoy some of the many things our wonderful towns offer during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love. If you have interesting, fun, and meaningful stories to share or are a business looking to grow within our community and the surrounding area, we would love to hear from you. The Epitome of Luxury A HOME THAT FEELS LIKE A PRIVATE RESORT

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN DEPRIMA

Short Hills is known for its beautiful homes and lovely surroundings. While some homes may be on the more “modest” side, most are spectacular. One of these is currently for sale, and whoever buys it may never want to leave. Located in the Fairfield section of the upscale town, the modern and sophisticated home is handsomely attired with hand-cut stone with mahogany windows and trim and a slate roof. Sitting on a magnificent and lush 1+ acres, it’s an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, downtown Millburn with its lovely shops, Broadway-worthy theater, and fabulous restaurants is minutes away, as is the train station that can whisk you right into New York City.

But again, with this residence, staying in is also a fine idea. As soon as you enter, the high ceilings and grand staircase set the tone for luxury. With a home gym featuring top-of-the-line exercise equipment, and a private pool area with luxurious pavers surrounded by mature trees and other landscaping for the ultimate in privacy, you, your family and guests can enjoy the serenity of nature while relaxing in or out of the saltwater pool. There is also a hot tub and a pool house with a bar and full bath. On the lower level of the house, you’ll find a wine cellar and tasting room. It’s truly your own personal resort! Every inch of the 12,000-square-foot home is exquisite and no detail has been overlooked. With six bedrooms and seven full and three half baths, there’s plenty of room for family and guests to spread out. Each bedroom has its own balcony and overlooks the picturesque property.

While walk-in closets in most homes are a nice convenience, the closet off the primary bedroom is more like your own personal boutique. With storage galore and glass-fronted cabinetry, you’ll almost feel like you’re shopping in your own home. And the best thing is, everything you see is yours to wear and enjoy whenever you like. To see this magnificent home and have a chance to own this extraordinary piece of real estate, go to newjerseyluxuryrealestate.com/short-hills/2-sinclairterrace-short-hills/ or michellepaisgroup.com/. You can even choose to purchase some or most of the high-end furnishings that were specifically chosen by a professional designer to fit the house to perfection. This is what living in luxury is all about!

Before you even get to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, you’ll see incredible art sculptures along the local roads. It’s a tantalizing introduction for what you’ll see when you arrive at the 42-acre property. Walking around the beautiful gardens is a pleasure in itself, but being able to view magnificent sculptures at the same time is a truly unique experience. While many of the over 300 pieces of art throughout the property are out in the open, others may be a little harder, and fun, to find. Off the main walkway you may see a little path and wonder, “What’s down that way?” It may be a sculpture of people having a picnic by a small pond, and in that pond you’ll see a sculpture of a boat and some ducks. More hidden paths lead to other delightful finds. “That sense of discovery and surprise is such a big part of how the garden was designed,” says Executive Director, Gary Garrido Schneider. “There are quiet areas of contemplation, but then there's the awe of something spectacularly big and unexpected.” It’s said that the ponds by the Van Gogh Cafe and gazebo are full of sacred lotus. When in bloom, they are just glorious. The garden is welcoming all year round when the spring and summer flowers are in full bloom and when the leaves are bursting with colors in the fall. Wintertime has its own picturesque beauty. “This year, the real showstopper is our indoor exhibitions of ceramic work,” he says. “Located in one of our galleries, it focuses on ceramics as a social medium. We have a solo show - Roberto Lugo: The Village Potter. Lugo’s a very well-regarded ceramicist, who has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and museums around the country. He’s a Puerto Rican artist who is known for making very large-scale pottery vessels that incorporate historic Black and Latino figures including civil rights leaders, popular culture, musicians, et cetera.” Grounds for Sculpture supported Lugo in creating a 20-foot tall vessel. It looks like a ceramic vessel, but it's actually made out of other materials. Visitors can go inside, climb the stairs, and actually become part of the artwork themselves. Many of the sculptures stay the same, but others are changed out occasionally, so frequent visitors can still see their favorites, but there’s always something new to see

too. Its Domestic Arts and museum buildings each have one exhibition a year and the Education Gallery changes its exhibitions seasonally. Another popular draw are the peacocks. “I think they add to that sense of wonder,” says Gary. “They're showy animals, and they love all the attention they get.” Strolling around the gardens for hours may work up an appetite. Along with two cafes for light fare and beverages, its upscale restaurant Rats offers fine cuisine for both lunch and dinner. Due to the popularity of Grounds for Sculpture, timed tickets have to be reserved in advance. However, if you’re a member, you can come anytime at no additional cost throughout the year, and also receive discounts in the store as well as discounts at the café and restaurants. Members also get invited to special events. “We're a nonprofit, so membership also supports us,” he says. There are also a full range of programs offered, including many wellness workshops. Members receive discounts on these courses as well. Private events, such as weddings and birthday parties, can also be held on the property. To plan your visit, go to www.groundsforsculpture.org/.

SPLU RGE

Splurge Bakery in Millburn is your destination for desserts this 4th of July. Known for its high-quality ingredients and indulgent treats made from scratch, your family and guests will definitely have something to celebrate along with the birth of our country. “We’ll have our Cakepops, which will be in the form of a flag, a Rose cake that'll be striped red, white, and blue, Cakesicles, plus 4th of July themed cupcakes and cookies,” says owner Julie Winer. Of course, Splurge will also have its mouth-watering pies, such as apple and blueberry, available. Since holiday items tend to sell out quickly, she says it's always a good idea to order in advance to make sure you get exactly what you want. (The bakery will be closed on July 4th.) “Many people have also been ordering our chocolate-dipped pretzels and Oreos,” says Julie. “Demand for our dessert bar items has really exploded. People are doing more parties and they're celebrating events in all different venues and offering elaborate dessert tables.” To place your order, go to splurgebakery.com/ and pop whatever you want into the online shopping cart. You can also call 973-379-0740. Enjoy!

OUTDOOR DINING GUIDE ARTICLE BY ANA MEYER PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS JORDA AND PROVIDED

The Best Places for Outdoor Summer Dining and Fun

There are a lot of great places to dine outdoors in our area, in town, and out of town. From coffee shops to bars, and restaurants. I’ve put together a list of my favorites and what makes them special from Millburn to Morristown, they are a short drive away! Enjoy!

30

LA PERGOLA IN MILLBURN, NJ:

CASA DAS NATAS IN MILLBURN, NJ:

La Pergola has the most adorable and largest outdoor garden dining area, hidden behind the restaurant, away from the noise of cars and people walking by. It is like you are dining in a garden in Tuscany, Italy! You are surrounded by shade and greenery, where you can feel the soft breeze and listen to the sound of nature while listening to Botticelli’s music. The food is to die for, freshly made to order, offering delicious seasonal menus from farm to table, using the freshest ingredients available for the season. It’s a great place to dine during the week and on weekends. Be sure to bring your favorite wine or spirit and say hello to the owners, Driola and Agron Kaloshi. La Pergola is BYOB. lapergolanj.com/

I love this place! You can experience a traditional Portuguese café serving classic pastries and savory Portuguese delights, coffee, and Portuguese beverages in Millburn. The owner has a farm, with over 35+ chickens, and she uses these fresh eggs to make the popular Portuguese custard cups called “pasties de nata”. You can also enjoy a warm savory “rissois”, it’s like a Portuguese empanada, except the dough, is very different and the filling as well. You can have shrimp, chicken or beef rissois with Portuguese coffee or cold Portuguese drink. Candida’s outdoor dining in front of her café, where you can enjoy the fresh air while listening to Portuguese music and bring your dog. Casa Das Natas is pet friendly! casadasnatasnj.com/

CALABRIA’S IN LIVINGSTON, NJ:

MILLIE’S OLD-WORLD MEATBALLS & PIZZA IN MORRISTOWN:

Calabria’s is the largest pizzeria in the area and has the bragging rights of having their famous thin crust “crunchy thin pizza”, has an 8.9 Barstool rating, making it top 3 in NJ and top 1% in the country! They also have a full bar and extensive Italian menu, so whatever you’re in the mood for, they have it here. Family-owned for over 40 years, these kind entrepreneurs have donated over 10,000+ family meals that feed a family of four, to needy families and first responders impacted by the pandemic during the past two years. Their outdoor dining area reminds me of a Palladian Villa in Italy. So, if you’re in the mood for an “out of this world pizza” and beer or wine, while dining outdoors, feeling like you’re in Italy, stop by Calabria’s. calabrias.com

Millie’s has the broadest meatball selection in our area, with a choice of sauces and stuffing, you will be sure to find something that you will like. The size of a serving is two, fairly large, about the size of a baseball. Millie’s has two outdoor dining spaces, one that is covered within the restaurant footprint, so you can enjoy the outdoors and dine on a rainy day. The other is on the sidewalk under beautiful rust orange-colored umbrellas, so you can enjoy their full menu, including wood fire oven roasted oysters and pizza fully outdoors. Millie’s is also BYOB. milliesoldworld.com

DELIKOSITAS IN MADISON:

Secluded from the street, is a wonderful rooftop outdoor dining area away from the crowds. It was the first place I dined for lunch with a friend during the pandemic, with outdoor heaters in the colder months. No heaters needed in the summer! You will be embraced by the original brick of the building, anchored with a beautiful outdoor fireplace that makes it feel cozy anywhere you sit. Enjoy the evening sunset while you sip on a signature cocktail. Their creative chef-prepared menu and full bar will leave you wanting to come back! They offer seasonal drinks and treats which include for the summer, a “Kiwi Cocktail” and their famous “Cookie Monster” dessert. townbarandkitchen.com/

Be adventurous and try Colombian cuisine at Delikositas where you can enjoy authentic Colombian empanadas, made from “Yucca” dough, savory “Pan de Queso” cheese bread, or “Buñuelos” and if you are really hungry, ask for the signature meal “Bandeja Paisa” which offers steak, with beans and white rice, eggs, “chicharron” and avocado. Enjoy cold beverages, like Mango or imported soda pop drinks, all while dining outdoors under umbrellas that will keep you cool, while you people watch and enjoy the vibe Madison has to offer. Owned and operated by two Madison residents, Delikositas brings Colombian flavors to you. delikositas.com/

RAISING SUPPORT ON THE RUNWAY

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELENA MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY

“Fashion is a great communicator,” says Leslie Patrizio, a fashion event planner and owner of Style Matters with Leslie Patrizio. “It's a wonderful vehicle to bring people together and to raise money for organizations.” One of these organizations is Family and Children's Services, Inc. (FACS), a non-profit in Elizabeth that provides critical services such as mental health counseling, parenting classes, life skills and more. In May, FACS held its 10th Annual Red Carpet Party fundraiser at the Canoe Brook Country Club in Short Hills. “I created this event 10 years ago,” she says. “It was right around the time of the Oscars, and I thought, ‘Wouldn't it be fun to have a red carpet party?’” The first year, she held the party at a boutique in Millburn and invited 50 of her friends. “We did this small event in the store, and we served champagne and had friends and high school girls as models. We also did a little auction.” The party was such a hit that Leslie decided to do it every year. “The following year, the event was held at the Short Hills Hilton, and then it outgrew that space. It was then held at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park, but we soon outgrew that space as well.” Since then, it’s been held at either Canoe Brook or the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. “We sold out last year,” says Leslie. “We sold out this year. Over 225 people attended. I bring in designers from New York but also work with local boutiques. Gowns from well-known bridal and evening wear designer, Sareh Nouri, have appeared in our fashion show numerous times. I still have local high-school girls, as well as professional models, volunteer to walk the runway.” CONTINUED >

A big draw is having local firemen model some of the clothes. “I dress them in great outfits and then they put their firemen coats and their hats on,” she says. “As each one walks down the runway, he takes off his hat and hands it to someone in the audience, then he takes off his coat and gives that to someone else.” Along the way, the men hand out roses too. The Red Carpet Party is also wellknown for its handbag raffles. “When we started, we had one handbag and I realized how excited every woman was about winning that handbag.” This year, they had about 35 donated handbags. Over the years, they’ve auctioned handbags from Louis Vuitton, Versace, Michael Kors and Kate Spade. There is also one extra-special handbag offered. This year it was a gorgeous Yves Saint Laurent bag; other years it's been, Chanel. Participants put tickets in the bag they want to win. Leslie adds, “We also do a silent auction and have had everything from an Eli Manning signed football jersey to jewelry, shoes, restaurant gift certificates and golf outings.” What really brings in the most money though are the sponsors. “The one thing to take away from this event is that people are generous, kind and thoughtful,” she says. “I have an amazing committee of friends and business associates who have become my friends. The success of this event is the giving back from the community.” If you want to join in the fun next year, go to facsnj.org.
