LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Style Issue
September 2026 PUBLISHER
September always feels like a fresh start. As the routines of fall return, many of us find ourselves making small changes, refreshing our homes, trying something new, or simply looking at familiar things with fresh eyes. It's the perfect time to celebrate style, not just as something we wear, but as a reflection of who we are and what inspires us. In this month's Style issue, you'll meet people who bring that idea to life in unexpected ways. From colorful works of art to thoughtfully designed spaces and meaningful personal connections, these stories remind us that style is often found in the details. You'll meet a local artist whose imagination spills far beyond the canvas. Through vibrant artwork, immersive installations, and art therapy, she has spent her career helping others discover creativity, healing, and joy. Her work invites people from all walks of life to slow down, explore, and see the world a little differently. We're also introducing you to a longtime Charlottesville optician whose personalized approach has helped generations of residents find eyewear that fits not only their vision, but their personality and lifestyle. Style takes many forms, and you'll see that throughout these pages. Discover how personalized healthcare is bringing relationships back to medicine by giving patients the time and attention they deserve. Meet a local entrepreneur whose carefully curated tea experiences have created a welcoming place for conversation and community. Then, explore outdoor vehicles designed to help families make the most of every season. One of our favorite things about putting together this issue is discovering how differently people define style. Sometimes it's found in a beautifully designed space. Sometimes it's expressed through a favorite piece of art or a perfect pair of glasses. More often than not, it's also reflected in the care people put into their work and the way they serve their community. We hope this issue leaves you feeling inspired to support local businesses, explore somewhere new, and celebrate the people whose creativity and passion help make Charlottesville such an amazing place to call home. As always, thank you to our readers, advertisers, and community partners for sharing your stories and supporting local businesses. We're grateful to you for welcoming Charlottesville City Lifestyle into your home. JAMES LISOWSKI, PUBLISHER @ C H A R LOT T E S V I L L E C I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

A longtime Charlottesville optical practice continues its legacy with personalized service and carefully curated frames.
Style You Can See When Jennifer Ornduff had the opportunity to operate her own business at what was then Keller & George Optical in 2000, she knew she was stepping into more than a simple shop. The Charlottesville institution had been helping generations of families see clearly since 1899, and she was honored to continue that legacy. Last year, after moving into a new location, the practice officially became Proper Focus Optical, the name she had chosen for her company from the very beginning.

glasses to shout across the room, and others may want them to disappear. That's part of the fun." As an owner of an independent practice, Ornduff carefully selects every frame with her patients in mind. "When I'm considering what frames to buy for the shop, I have my patients in mind, not the masses," she said. "The selection here isn't exactly like what you see [elsewhere]. It’s more unique" Over the years, many of the children she once helped choose their first pair of glasses have returned as adults. Moments like those remind her why she took the leap into business ownership. "My goal is to change perspective, not just with expertly crafted eyewear," Ornduff said. "I try to see beyond the glasses to the person and connect."

"I named my company to remind myself what I do," Ornduff said. "There's a spiritual meaning for me, to be properly focused on God, and practically, to help others see clearly." The new name received an unexpected endorsement from one of her youngest patients. "She was about 10 years old and said she liked the new name better because 'it tells what you do,'" Ornduff said. "She was right." Helping people see clearly has always been the goal, but for Ornduff, it's never been just about glasses. "Our vision has always been to serve," she said. "We want to make each person who walks through the door know that they matter to us." That philosophy shapes every appointment. Instead of rushing patients through the process, Proper Focus Optical schedules one-onone appointments, giving each person time to explore different styles, ask questions, and find frames that truly fit their personality and lifestyle. "Eyewear is personal," Ornduff said. "Young professionals may want a pair that makes them look more experienced. Some may want their

SIGRID EILERTSON BLENDS ART, EDUCATION, AND THERAPY TO INSPIRE CREATIVITY THROUGHOUT THE CHARLOTTESVILLE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND.
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SIGRID EILERTSON
For Sigrid Eilertson, art has never simply been something to hang on a wall. It has been a refuge, a form of expression, a way to build community, and ultimately, a life's calling. "I've been making art since I could hold a crayon," Eilertson said. Growing up, she struggled with anxiety and depression while also enduring bullying. Fortunately, she found an outlet at home. Her father was an artist, and he gave her access to a world filled with paints, brushes, and endless possibilities. "I often used his art materials to express myself and felt instant relief," she said. That early experience shaped everything that followed. After earning a bachelor's degree in fine art from the College of Charleston and a master's degree in art therapy from Marylhurst University, Eilertson spent a decade working as an art therapist in a locked psychiatric unit and residential treatment program for adolescents. She later expanded her work into private practice while continuing to create her own art. Today, her impact reaches far beyond the studio. As an Arts Specialist for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia, she introduces children across six regional clubs to hands-on creative experiences while connecting them with working artists throughout the community. She also teaches classes at The Arts Center in Orange, leads monthly art therapy workshops with refugee families through the International Rescue Committee, facilitates a weekly art therapy group for women at Central Virginia Regional Jail, and continues to
find new ways to make creativity accessible. "I always knew I had a calling to help others and what a fantastic way to help one another through art," she said. Eilertson’s artwork reflects her sense of curiosity and imagination. Bright colors, mythology, surrealism, and the natural world frequently find their way into her paintings, sculptures, block prints, and immersive installations. Visitors to IX Art Park's Looking Glass can climb into her whimsical Tree Throne or step beneath the sea in Neptune's Cove, becoming part of the artwork rather than simply observing it. She recently completed another community project through Service Dogs of Virginia's Art Unleashed fundraiser, joining 11 other Charlottesville artists in transforming life-sized dog sculptures into works of art. Her piece, Mushrooms at Midnight, celebrates her fascination with mycology, while helping raise money for service dogs that will eventually be paired with individuals with special needs. Her work is currently on display at C'ville Arts: A Cooperative Gallery, where she is exhibiting colorful block prints, while additional masks, watercolors, and prints are featured at The Arts Center in Orange where she has also recently painted murals on the exterior. A recent exhibition of mythical animals at Blenheim Vineyards introduced visitors to another evolving chapter of her artistic journey. Inspiration comes from many places. Eilertson admires artists who challenged convention, particularly women whose contributions were often overlooked by history. She points to

Leonora Carrington's surrealism, Hilma af Klint's groundbreaking abstract expressionism, Vanessa German's storytelling sculptures, Artemisia Gentileschi's dramatic paintings, Bisa Butler's vibrant fiber art, and Grandma Moses' remarkable late-in-life career as lasting influences. Now, she's adding her own voice to that conversation. Whether she's helping a child discover the joy of creating, encouraging a family to process a life-changing transition through art, or inviting someone to sit inside a giant sculptural tree, the endgame is the same: using art to heal and to help people see themselves and the world around them in a different light. TRAVIS SAUNDERS SHARES HOW PIEDMONT POWER HELPS HOMEOWNERS BLEND STYLE, FUNCTION, AND OUTDOOR LIVING.
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER WALDERA PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS What inspired you to start Piedmont Power? Piedmont Power was built on the idea that buying equipment should be a relationship, not just a transaction. From the beginning, our goal has been to provide quality products backed by knowledgeable people who genuinely care about our customers’ success. Whether someone is maintaining a small yard or managing a large property, we wanted to create a dealership where customers feel welcome, receive honest advice, and know they’ll be supported long after the sale. How have you seen golf carts, utility vehicles, and compact tractors become part of homeowners’ lifestyles rather than simply tools? The way people use these vehicles has changed dramatically. Golf carts have become a fun and practical way to get around neighborhoods, campgrounds, and local events. Utility vehicles have become essential for everything from moving landscaping supplies to family adventures on larger properties. Compact tractors aren’t just for farmers anymore -- they’re helping homeowners maintain acreage, tackle landscaping projects, and enjoy their property more efficiently. These products have become part of everyday living because they save time, add convenience, and let people spend more time enjoying their homes instead of working on them. Many of your customers have everything from neighborhood lots to large rural properties. How do you help people find a vehicle or piece of equipment that truly fits the way they live? We start by listening. Every customer has different needs, and we take the time to understand how they’ll actually use the equipment. We ask about their property size, terrain, daily tasks, future projects, and budget. Instead of simply selling the biggest or most expensive machine, we focus on matching each customer with equipment that makes their life easier and provides long-term value.

What do you believe sets Piedmont Power apart? It’s really [a combination of things]. We’re proud to represent trusted brands like Bad Boy, Ferris, Mahindra, Kymco, Yamaha Golf Cars, Club Car, Husqvarna, and more, but great products are only part of the equation. Our experienced sales, parts, and service teams are committed to taking care of customers before, during, and after the purchase. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . We also offer pickup and delivery, mobile service, and two convenient locations, making it easier for customers to keep their equipment running year after year. You’ve watched the outdoor power and utility vehicle industry evolve over the years. What innovations or trends have you found most exciting, and what are customers asking for today that they weren’t a decade ago? Customers today expect equipment that’s more comfortable, more reliable, and easier to operate. Features like suspension systems on zero-turn mowers, fuel-efficient engines, quieter operation, and customizable golf carts have become increasingly popular. Technology has also improved diagnostics and maintenance, helping equipment last longer and perform better. More than ever, customers are looking for products that combine performance with comfort and convenience. For someone considering their first golf cart or utility vehicle, what are a few things they may not realize about how these vehicles can enhance everyday life around the home, neighborhood, or property? Many people are surprised by just how often they use them once they own one. A golf cart becomes the easiest way to visit neighbors, take the kids for a ride, attend community events, or simply enjoy an evening around the neighborhood. Utility vehicles quickly become indispensable for hauling firewood, gardening supplies, tools, feed, or anything else around the property. They save time, reduce physical strain, and make everyday tasks much more enjoyable.

As you’ve grown the business, what accomplishments or milestones are you most proud of, and what have those experiences taught you about serving this community? One of our biggest accomplishments has been the growth we’ve experienced while staying true to who we are. Expanding our brands, growing our service department, and opening our Orange location have all been exciting milestones, but what we’re most proud of is the trust we’ve built with our customers. Seeing people come back year after year and recommend us
“From the beginning, our goal has been to provide quality products backed by knowledgeable people who genuinely care about our customers' success.” to their friends and family means everything to us. It’s taught us that great service, honest communication, and treating every customer like a neighbor are what truly make a difference in this community. That means expanding our inventory, adding new products and services, investing in our team, and embracing new technology that benefits our customers. A FRESH S T Y L E OF C A R E RIVANNA CONCIERGE PHYSICIANS BRINGS A MORE PERSONAL APPROACH TO MODERN HEALTHCARE.
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER WALDERA PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS

LOCA L’S CH OICE | WEL LN E SS
For Drs. Paige and Mike McClincy, opening Rivanna Concierge Physicians wasn't simply about launching a new medical practice. It was about creating the kind of healthcare experience they believed had become increasingly difficult to find: one centered on relationships, accessibility, and prevention. After years of practicing medicine within the traditional healthcare system, the husband-and-wife physicians saw firsthand how rushed appointments, limited access, and growing administrative demands affected both patients and doctors.
Mike and Paige McClincy. Photo Credit: Erin Hurley
"We wanted to create the kind of medical practice we would want for our own family, where patients have easy and direct access to their doctor, where appointments aren't rushed, and the focus is on preventing disease and optimizing health," Paige McClincy said. She said today's healthcare system often leaves patients feeling disconnected while physicians struggle to provide the level of care they aspire to deliver. "Patients often have to navigate call centers instead of speaking directly with their doctor's office, and physicians are expected to care for thousands of patients, making it difficult to offer prompt appointments," she said. "We couldn't change the system, so we left it to create a different one." That different approach begins long before illness develops. Rather than focusing primarily on treating disease, the physicians encourage patients to think proactively about the future they want to enjoy. "One of the greatest benefits of concierge medicine is that it gives us the time to have these conversations before illness develops," Mike McClincy said. "Instead of reacting to disease or waiting for problems to crop up, we're helping patients build habits, identify risks early, explore new treatments, and make informed decisions that can improve both lifespan and healthspan." He said that perspective allows patients to invest in the quality of their lives for years to come. "It's absolutely possible to reverse engineer how you want your last decades to look, but it requires being proactive rather than reactive," Mike McClincy said. The extra time patients spend with their physicians is one of the practice's greatest advantages. "When physicians aren't rushing from room to room, they can listen more carefully, ask better questions, and understand the whole person, not just the symptom that brought them in that day," Mike McClincy said. "That's going to lead to earlier detection of problems, more personalized care, and patients who are more engaged in their own health." The couple's philosophy was shaped early in their careers while training together at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, where experienced physicians modeled an approach focused on understanding the whole person. "There was constant emphasis on treating and understanding the whole person, not just their medical conditions," Paige McClincy said. "Beyond that, so many patient interactions over the years have influenced and refined the way I approach patient care, and I'm still learning from my patients today." While concierge medicine may seem like a modern concept, Paige McClincy said many aspects of Rivanna Concierge Physicians intentionally reflect the family medicine patients once expected. "We hope to model primary care the way it used to be experienced, a doctor and staff who know your name, a familiar friendly voice answering the phone, a comfortable office with little waiting time, and a visit with your doctor that lasts longer than 15 minutes," she said.
Preventive care also means focusing on the habits that have the greatest impact on long-term health. Mike McClincy points to exercise, particularly improving cardiovascular fitness and building muscle strength, along with quality sleep, good nutrition, and strong social connections. Since opening in June, the response from the Charlottesville community has affirmed the practice's mission. "It's been exciting to see how much interest we've been getting from the community since we opened," Paige McClincy said. "I was so happy to say 'yes' the first time a patient called in and asked to be seen same day." Looking ahead, Mike McClincy hopes Rivanna Concierge Physicians becomes known for restoring something many people feel healthcare has lost. "Healthcare has become increasingly transactional, but we want to make it personal again," he said. "Over the next decade, I'd like Rivanna Concierge Physicians to be recognized as a practice where patients feel known, physicians have the time to do their best work, and prevention is just as important as treatment." "If we've built lasting relationships, earned patients' trust, and made a meaningful difference in their quality of life," he said, "we'll have accomplished exactly what we set out to do." Steeped in Connection C-Ville Bites founder MJ Padilla reimagines the classic tea party with Tea, Please! WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR NEW TEA EVENTS?
After hosting a tea party for my birthday a few years ago, I knew I wanted to create a public version -- a gathering centered on connection, conversation, and good food and drink. Some of my favorite memories growing up in Honduras were watching the ladies sipping tea, playing cards, and, of course... spilling the latest gossip! I wanted to put my own millennial spin on that tradition. We have been hosting private tea parties for bachelorette groups, and they have been such a hit that it felt like the right time to create the same type of experience for the whole community. I also know how hard it can be to make friends as adults. My hope is to create a space where those connections can happen naturally. If someone leaves having made a new friend -- or even just feeling a little less alone -- I think that's a pretty special afternoon. We’ll have elegant food, a tea lesson by our favorite tea aficionado, Dillon, and fun games, like a modern version of Mexican Lotería, which lets us get a little friendly competition going without taking ourselves too seriously. I’ve also been perfecting the playlist so we’ll have the perfect blend of nostalgic hits and girl pop. So this is your excuse to get dressed up, drink delicious tea, eat way too much indulgent food, make new friends, and slow down for an afternoon.
WHEN AND WHERE DO THE EVENTS TAKE PLACE?
This ongoing series takes place once a month on Saturdays from 11 am-1 pm, at Café Frank, on the Historic Downtown Mall! The entire café is reserved for us, so feel free to laugh a little louder, linger a little longer, or sing out of tune -- we promise you're in good company.
WHAT SHOULD ATTENDEES EXPECT THE AFTERNOON TO LOOK LIKE?
First of all, you should know that I love a good theme, so I had the most fun putting together all the décor. I wanted to create a space that feels beautiful, welcoming, and just a little over the top -- in the best way. Women are often the ones doing the hosting, planning, and taking care of everyone else, so I wanted to create an afternoon where we get to be the ones who are taken care of. We'll kick things off with a sparkling wine toast before Dillon guides us through a curated tea tasting. Everyone will enjoy their own tea

tray with finger sandwiches, pastries, and other sweet and savory treats. We'll play a few lighthearted games, share lots of laughs, and maybe even spill a little tea of our own. We all have that dress hanging in the closet that we're waiting for the "right" occasion to wear -- this is it. Come dressed up (if you want!), take a break from the everyday, and enjoy a couple of hours that are just for you. My hope is that people leave feeling a little more connected than when they arrived -- with full bellies, maybe some new friends, and an excuse to do it all again.
WHAT INFORMS DECISIONS ABOUT THE TEAS THAT ARE CHOSEN?
Our tea selections are led by our tea aficionado and local sommelier, Dillon Ramsey. I got to know Dillon through my food tours on the Downtown Mall. He always takes such great care of my guests that many of them make a point to go back and visit him after the tour. One day, I had a headache during a tour, and he made me a custom tea blend. That's when I discovered he was just as passionate about tea as he is about wine. What I love most about Dillon is his curiosity. He's constantly hunting down interesting teas, unusual herbs, and unique blends that most people have never heard of. His goal isn't just to serve a great cup of tea -- it's to make tea approachable while introducing people to new flavors, traditions, and brewing techniques in a fun, welcoming way.
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE PAIRINGS?

I see food as an extension of the tea experience. I'm a big grazer, and love to taste a little bit of everything, which is probably why I fell in love with food tours in the first place. I wanted our tea parties to have that same feeling: a little sweet, a little savory, delicious drinks, a chance to learn something new, and plenty of time to connect with new people in our community. I’ve got a huge soft spot for traditional English tea sandwiches and classic sweet treats, but we're not taking ourselves too seriously over here. The goal is for everything to be delicious, approachable, and just plain fun. As Tea, Please! continues to grow, I’m looking to partner with more local bakeries and artisans to create pairings that showcase CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . I hope this is the beginning of growing a really fun community. If you've been looking for an excuse to get dressed up, try something new, or meet some amazing women, I'd love to have you join us. And if you can't make one of our public events, don't worry -- we also host private tea parties, food tours, cooking classes, and mixology experiences throughout Charlottesville. I love dreaming up new experiences, so if there's an event anyone would love to see in Charlottesville, I hope they'll reach out and let me know.

Just 30 minutes from Charlottesville, Gordonsville invites visitors to trade busy schedules for leisurely strolls and lingering meals in a place that’s as easily a little break from home as it is a staycation. Brick sidewalks lead past locally owned shops, beautifully preserved buildings, and restaurants that have quietly turned the town into one of Virginia's burgeoning culinary destinations. Add nearby wineries, gardens, horseback riding, and a healthy dose of history, and Gordonsville becomes the perfect escape for a day trip or an easy weekend away.
MAKE THE JOURNEY PART OF THE ADVENTURE
Driving is the simplest way to arrive, but there's another option that's as memorable as the destination itself. The Virginia Scenic Railway's Gordonsville Layover Excursion carries passengers through rolling Virginia countryside before arriving downtown, where there's time to explore shops, restaurants, and local attractions before boarding for the return trip. It's an experience that transforms the journey into a more scenic part of the overall trip.
WHERE VIRGINIA'S STORY COMES ALIVE
History enthusiasts won't have to look far for things to love in Gordonsville. The Exchange Hotel Civil War Museum stands as one of Gordonsville's most significant landmarks. Built in 1860 as a railroad hotel, the building became a receiving hospital during the Civil War, treating thousands of wounded soldiers before eventually returning to its original purpose. Today, thoughtfully curated exhibits bring the building's history to life while offering a deeper understanding of Gordonsville's importance as a railroad crossroads.

Those looking to continue exploring can follow self-guided tours highlighting Civil War sites throughout town or discover nearby landmarks connected to several U.S. presidents, making it easy to spend an afternoon stepping through Virginia's past.
SHOP LOCAL
Downtown Gordonsville rewards wandering. There’s no shortage of adorable shops and spots to pop into while meandering down Main Street. Jackson & Company is a favorite stop for specialty foods, home décor, gifts, and Virginia-made products, while neighboring CONTINUED >

boutiques offer everything from antiques or clothes to unique finds. Just down the street, Annie Gould Gallery showcases beautiful works by regional and nationally recognized artists.
COME HUNGRY
Gordonsville's reputation as a food destination is also well deserved. Barbecue fans regularly make the trip for The BBQ Exchange, known throughout Virginia for its smoked meats and Southern comfort food. For a more upscale meal, settle into the elegant atmosphere at Près des Prés, with seasonal French fare, or visit the restaurant's bar for handcrafted cocktails. Or, sip local wines with dishes made for pairing at Well Hung Vineyard's restaurant. If you're looking to gather with family, friends, and even four-legged companions, Gordonsville Ice House is the spot, where there's plenty of space indoors, and outdoor seating makes it easy to linger in the warmer months. Just a short ride away, Patch Brewing Co. offers another welcoming stop for a casual meal or drinks. Meanwhile, Exchange Café, also a bit up the road, is perfect for a full meal or even a coffee and a light bite.

FRESH AIR AWAITS
The countryside surrounding Gordonsville offers just as many reasons to stay another day. Oakland Heights Farm invites visitors to experience Virginia's landscape from horseback during guided trail rides through scenic farmland that offer a glimpse into local history. A short drive away, The Market at Grelen combines walking trails, beautifully maintained gardens, a European-style café, and a garden shop into one destination that's easy to lose yourself in for an afternoon. For adventure seekers, nearby Orange offers skydiving experiences that deliver unforgettable views of Central Virginia from thousands of feet above the landscape.
ADD A FEW MORE STOPS
While the town of Gordonsville itself offers plenty of opportunities for exploring, there are many nearby destinations, too. Barboursville Vineyards pairs award-winning wines with one of Virginia's most recognizable historic sites: the Jefferson-designed Barboursville Ruins. Stop in for a tasting, or make an afternoon or evening of the visit by dining at Palladio. Merrie Mill Farm & Vineyards, also close by, offers a different atmosphere, combining distinctive wines with colorful art, live music, and seasonal events. Along the way, pop into other local wineries like Château Merillanne, Honah Lee Vineyard, Southwest Mountain Vineyards, and The Barn at 678.
