Living In Style
September is a month to explore style, and it’s no secret that the Holy City is buzzing with elegance at every turn. But what defines style? It’s not limited to the clothes hanging in our closest. Instead, it permeates every aspect of our lives—through our home decor, how we carry ourselves in conversation, and our very being.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to explore new inspiration as well as cherish familiar ones.
There is so much here in Charleston to uplift our spirits, boost our productivity, and ignite our creativity. So here's to celebrating style!
Warm Regards,
September 2023

The Pinch Hotel Radiates Elegance
Its charm and grace complement perfectly Charleston’s historic district
ARTICLE BY EILEEN DAILY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE PINCH, FEATURING THE STYLISH WORK OF CHRISTIAN HARDER, DANIEL OLSOVSKY, BLAKE SHORTER, AND MATTHEW WILLIAMS
Sitting at the heart of historic Charleston at the crossroads of King and George Streets, The Pinch is Charleston’s new luxury boutique hotel. Housed in two original Victorian-style structures dating back to the early 1840s, along with one newly constructed building, the property has been transformed into a 25-room gem.
Developed and designed by Philadelphiabased Method Co., in partnership with renowned New York-based architect Morris Adjmi Architects, The Pinch reflects Charleston’s constantly evolving future while maintaining its nostalgic appeal.
We asked The Pinch General Manager Alexandra Smith and Method Co. CEO Randall Cook, to describe the hotel in their own words:
When you walk into The Pinch each day, what are your favorite special touches that make you happy?
Each morning it brings me joy to walk up and see The Pinch bikes perfectly situated in the courtyard ready for a day of exploration. Walking into the lobby I see the early sun coming through the palm fronds outside the lobby windows casting a beautiful display of shadows and light across the lobby seating area. A perfect setting to enjoy the complimentary coffee and pastries! -GM Alexandra Smith
What three adjectives best describe your philosophy of service?
Understated, approachable, emotionally intelligent. -GM Alexandra Smith

Lobby, The Pinch
Charleston has a storied history of style and elegance. What facets, features and special features does The Pinch have that differentiate it from others?
For me, the design standout would be the kitchens that we built into the suites with Boos walnut countertops, as well as beautiful honed farmhouse marble sinks and unlacquered brass taps from DeVol. The kitchens also have custom cabinetry designed by Morris Adjmi, black enamel gas ranges, and tile backsplash from Che’.
- Randall Cook, CEO/Founder of Method Co.
If you were a guest in The Pinch, what would be your ideal 36 hours in Charleston, including the hotel?
Start off by checking into The Pinch and enjoying a refreshing welcome cocktail. After getting settled in my spacious suite, I’d take a Pinch bike for a spin to get oriented with the city. I’d grab lunch at 167 Raw and head to South of Broad to marvel at the historic homes along the Charleston harbor. Stop by Rainbow Row for a photo-op and stop in the City Market (or the farmers market if it's open!) and pick up a few uniquely authentic Charlestonian items from local vendors to take home as souvenirs. Do a little bit of shopping on King Street and head back to the hotel to refresh and recharge before heading back out for a night on the town. Head to happy hour at The Vendue rooftop followed by an Italian dinner at Sorelle to indulge in some fresh handmade pasta dishes. The next day, maximize the morning before departure by experiencing a private walking tour of the Holy City with Oyster Point for insight into the rich history of Charleston. Or, head out to Sullivan's Island for a beach day with The Pinch's beach towels and chair rentals. If there's time, lunch at Obstinate Daughter before heading home!
- GM Alexandra Smith
How do you describe the feel and spirit of the hotel, when someone asks you to about it?
We took a lot of inspiration from the great English traditions of craftsmanship that were brought over to Charleston and played such a large role in creating so many of the incredible homes and structures that give Charleston so much charm. Regardless if our guests are in the newly built or renovated portion of The Pinch, we want them to feel and experience a great sense of the craftsman tradition that makes Charleston so special. — Randall

Reimagining Style
Nestled in the restored 19th century Cigar Factory at 701 East Bay Street in downtown Charleston, Fritz Porter Design Collective celebrates owner and principal designer Sarah Hamlin Hastings’ love of discovery.
Named after Sarah’s Uncle Fritz and Aunt Porter (both of whom were artists that hand-painted birthday cards for all their nieces and nephews every year), Fritz Porter is a curated collective of boutique textile lines, artisanal finds, handcrafted furniture, and unique lighting sourced from around the world.
With more than 20 years of experience in the interior design and textile business, Sarah has worked with the likes of Elle Decor, Stiles Colwill Interiors and Cullman and Kravis. She founded Fritz Porter in 2015, and her approach to design is much like the store, which is equal parts curatorial and curiosity-driven.

8. Rose Uniacke: I always love a good velvet and linen, and my go-to is Rose Uniacke- hers are amazing in every way.
9. Volga Linen: I have a candy store of colors to pick from and the quality is tops.
10. Maresca Textiles: Maresca textiles have always been a staple for my design projects; with her colors and pattern scales, I always find something my clients like.

INFLUENCED BY STYLE
DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE SHOPS IN CHARLESTON YOU FIND YOURSELF FREQUENTING?
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR OWN LIFESTYLE BLOG?
It was just a creative outlet at first. I started my blog back in 2010 when I was living in New York and working in the beauty industry. I worked for a large CPG company where I realized that my dream job may actually not be my dream. Naming nail polishes and developing shades, designing the in-store displays... but also a little bit miserable working in such a corporate environment. I am an introvert (I didn't even know about introverts vs. extroverts at the time) and was always drained. It was meeting after meeting and just feeling like I was on a hamster wheel.
My little refuge was my blog. I'd come home from a long day at work, pour a glass of wine, and sit in the quiet and write. It was cathartic to make little collages and share the things I loved. I had always loved sharing my latest product discoveries, and shopping finds with my girlfriends... this felt just like that but magnified. I never dreamed that it would become my full-time job.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?
Travel! And if I'm not traveling, reading (I find that books can be equally transportive.)
HAS YOUR STYLE CHANGED AT ALL SINCE MOVING TO CHARLESTON?
I would say that it has changed a bit to accommodate the weather. Summers here are no joke. I pretty much live in shorts and tanks or breezy dresses. You don't want anything touching your skin!
Yes! I love Hampden Clothing for all things unique and highend — Stacy has an amazing eye and always seems to have her finger on the pulse of what the next big thing is going to be. I also love Beau & Ro for gorgeous summer dresses, and Holst & Lee for jewelry. Speaking of jewelry, Croghan's is dangerous for me (I'm a bit of a magpie) but amazing. And, of course, Buxton Books!
YOU SHARE THAT YOU LOVE READING. HAVE YOU PICKED UP ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
The ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) fantasy series has dominated my summer. It's fun, but read it when you have a lot of free time. Two other books I really loved were The Chateau (the best thriller I've read in ages!) and The Secret Book of Flora Lea.

Elegance, charm and coziness invite you to gather - and linger- at the table
Charleston Septembers are well known for their warm days and pink sunsets. They’re also known for high humidity, so it’s the perfect time to make our indoor dining rooms somewhere lovely to gather.

Garden to Table: bud vases bring the outside in
of summer treats like lemonade - and when you’re making lemon bars or a gin martini, you’ll have a bountiful choice.
Another easy way to make a big impact is to line up bud vases of all colors and sizes and put your garden flowers in each one. Garden-to-table doesn’t always have to mean fruits and vegetables!
If you have a small space and want to create a place to share meals or play wordle together, use a similar color palette as the room where you’re adding the dining table, but feel free to use different colored chairs. A thin, tall vase filled with cathedral greens or buds brings the eye upward, making the space appear bigger - and ever so charming!

THE little BLACK DRESS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES STYLIST: AMANI SKALACKI
Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

COCO CHANNEL MADE THE BOLD MOVE TO PRINT A SHORT, BLACK DRESS ON THE COVER OF VOGUE IN 1926
FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY 32
“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.”
Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.
“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:
HOURGLASS FIGURE:
• V-necklines
• Cinched-in waistlines
• Tailored/fitted dresses
PEAR OR TRIANGLE
FIGURE:
• Tailored dresses
• Off the shoulder
ATHLETIC FIGURE:

The dress that all body types can’t go wrong with is a wrap dress of any length.
