LIFESTYLE LETTER

Style Is More Than Just Fashion I've always believed that style is about far more than what's hanging in your closet. It's found in the pieces we treasure, the homes we create, the colors we're drawn to, and even the passions that shape who we are. That's exactly what you'll find in this month's Style Issue. Of course, we've rounded up the season's standout fashion trends—from jewelry and handbags to shoes, clothing, and eyewear—but we also wanted to explore style through a more personal lens. In "Closet Confessions," six local women share the stories behind the items they cherish most. You'll also meet Chandler native and newly crowned Miss Arizona 2026, whose dedication to service, leadership, and making a difference is every bit as inspiring as her accomplishments. Beyond fashion, we take style home with fresh paint colors, inviting design trends, beautiful blooms from Rural Stems Flower Farm, and the local children's clothing brand House of Henry, which combines timeless style with everyday practicality. Whether you're looking to refresh your wardrobe, your home, or simply your perspective, I hope these pages leave you feeling inspired to embrace your own unique sense of style. After all, the most memorable style isn't about following trends—it's about expressing who you are. Thank you, as always, for letting us be a part of your community. I hope you enjoy the issue! Yours,

Numbers Intimidate. We make them easy. We work mainly with women who find themselves suddenly single. Women who are scared. Women who feel like they don’t know anything about finance. Women who don’t want to be taken advantage of. Women who don’t want to be judged. Women who just need someone to help.

Caroline Strok

Sara Pourian

Broker, Ocotillo Home Lending

Owner, The Tox Chandler

As the owner of Ocotillo Home Lending, I’m dedicated to making a difference both inside and outside the mortgage industry. Whether I’m helping clients navigate home financing, supporting local businesses, or spending time with my daughter, Ivy, community is at the heart of everything I do. ITEM: Michael Kors laptop work bag My black Michael Kors tote is my everyday work essential— sleek, timeless, and spacious enough to carry everything I need while maintaining a polished, professional look. WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ITEM: My work bag is more than just an accessory—it’s a symbol of the life I’ve built. It goes everywhere with me, from helping clients achieve homeownership to attending community events and cheering on my daughter, Ivy. It’s a daily reminder that I can balance being a business owner, a mom, and an active member of the Chandler community, all while staying organized and ready for whatever the day brings.

I’m the owner of The Tox Chandler, where beauty meets wellness through intentional self-care and a holistic approach to overall well-being. Discovering The Tox Technique through my own wellness journey gave me a new sense of purpose and inspired me to help others experience the same intentional approach to wellness that has reshaped my own. ITEM: Wide-leg jeans WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ITEM: My high-waisted, wide-leg jeans, in both a light and dark wash, are my staple pieces. Between the two, I have a go-to for every season and almost any occasion. I love that they have the structure and polish of dress pants while offering a refreshing alternative to traditional trousers. An added bonus is that simply swapping the top and accessories makes it feel like a whole new outfit. They’re one of the few pieces I can wear throughout my workday and still want to wear to dinner or happy hour afterward.

Christy Liem

Marina Bevier-Peterson

Co-owner of Acacia Properties, Inc.

New Home Sales Consultant, Keystone Homes

I’ve been a realtor for 30 years, and our company, Acacia Properties, is also the director of sales for Keystone Homes. ITEM: A personalized jacket my daughters had made for me for a special birthday WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ITEM: It was such a special gift, knowing that my kids took the time to create something that is uniquely mine and tells a story, our story. It includes my favorite things like their father, acknowledging our grandchildren, our dog Milo, and some of the funny nicknames and sayings that have hung on over the years. It was a wonderful surprise that is a treasure every time I wear it because when I am asked about what is on it, I am very prideful about all of the memories that are special to them, too.

I’m a wife, mother of five, and proud Grammie to 12 wonderful grandchildren. When I’m not helping families find their dream home, I enjoy traveling, spending time at the beach, listening to music, catching a movie with my husband, and cheering on my grandchildren at their many sporting events. ITEM: A flowing blouse in shades of purple, green, and white paired with plum-colored pants WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ITEM: I’m drawn to clothing that feels comfortable, simple, and cozy, while still looking professional. Working in new home sales means I spend much of my day with clients, so I appreciate outfits that help me feel confident, approachable, and put together. This blouseand-pant combination strikes the perfect balance—it’s comfortable enough for long days yet polished enough to make a great impression. It reflects my personal style: understated, welcoming, and effortlessly professional.

Kim Moyers

Shana Schwarz

Cultural Development Director, City of Chandler

Author of As Long as Stars Are Above You

As a wife, mother, nana, and working professional who attends many cultural events each month, I am always on the go. I need versatile outfits that transition effortlessly from work to family activities, social gatherings, and special events. ITEM: Black blazer from Cabi WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ITEM: My black blazer is my most versatile, go-to jacket for work and leisure. It easily creates both professional and casual looks. For the office, I pair it with a button-down shirt and pencil skirt for a polished appearance or a camisole and trousers for a business-casual style. On weekends, I dress it up with a tank top and heels for an evening out or keep it casual with a T-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes. Its timeless style makes it a wardrobe staple I can wear for almost any occasion.

I’m a mom of teenagers who are constantly in musicals, so I can often be found in the audience cheering them on (and sometimes onstage myself). I also work at a nonprofit (AZ Water Association) and try to find time to work on my novels when I can. ITEM: Kate Spade All Typed Up Clyde Satchel in Fire Engine Red WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ITEM: She’s a conversation starter! I love when people comment on this bag because I get to tell them I’m an author and encourage them to write their own stories. Plus, kids love to come up and press the keys, and it’s so sweet. I coveted her for over a decade and feel so special now that she’s mine. I love the nostalgia of typewriters and did so much of my early writing on them; plus, she’s just so beautiful. Oh, and yes, the bag is a she and her name is Paige after Satchel Paige and for the pages and pages of stories I still have to write.

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY MISS ARIZONA

The Chandler Native and Newly Crowned Miss Arizona 2026 Shares What Drives Her, What Inspires Her, and What She Hopes to Accomplish

Beyond the Crown Victoria Vredevoogd, a Chandler native who served as Miss Chandler, was recently crowned Miss Arizona 2026! In addition to representing our state, Vredevoogd is a third-year law student at Arizona State University's (ASU) Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, and the founder and president of The Gender Violence Project. She is also the author of the fantasy novel A Legend of Golden Shadows and a classically trained vocalist. Vredevoogd is passionate about using both public service and the law to expand access to justice for survivors of gender-based violence and will represent Arizona at the Miss America competition this month.

30

T R E N D SE T T E R | L I FE + CU LT U RE

So tell us—who is Victoria beyond the crown? Beyond the crown, I'm someone who loves serving others, spending time with family and friends, reading fantasy novels, and singing. I also run the Instagram account for my rescue cat, Earl (@theearlesscatearl), who has become an internet celebrity and has built an amazing community of animal lovers. At the end of the day, I'm just a girl who loves Arizona and wants to leave every place a little better than I found it. How did being Miss Chandler prepare you for Miss Arizona? As someone who was born and raised in Chandler, serving as Miss Chandler was incredibly meaningful because it allowed me to give back to the community that shaped me. My year as Miss Chandler helped me grow as a leader while balancing law school, advocacy, fundraising, and hundreds of community appearances, preparing me to represent the entire state as Miss Arizona. What cause are you most passionate about and why? I'm most passionate about survivors of gender-based violence receiving justice. At ASU Law, I founded The Gender Violence Project, Arizona's first student-led organization dedicated to preventing gender-based violence through survivor advocacy, legal resources, prevention education, self-defense classes, and community outreach. It is the first of its kind in Arizona and only the third in the nation. To find out more, visit TheGenderViolenceProject.com. Every person deserves to feel safe and have access to justice, and I'm committed to using both my legal education and my year as Miss Arizona to help make that a reality. Who has inspired you most? My parents have inspired me more than anyone. They have always encouraged me to dream big, work hard, and never give up, even when the road wasn't easy. Their unwavering support has helped me become the woman I am today. What do you hope young girls take away from meeting you? I hope they leave believing that no dream is too big. I want them to know that success doesn't happen overnight, but with hard work, perseverance, and kindness, they are capable of accomplishing incredible things.

stage in a brown evening gown at Miss Arizona. I am so excited to wear a one-of-a-kind gown that I helped design at Miss America this year and share another piece of my story through fashion. Future plans? After my year as Miss Arizona, I plan to graduate from ASU Law, become an attorney, and continue advocating for survivors of gender-based violence. I hope to dedicate my legal career to expanding access to justice while continuing to serve my community. I also plan to continue publishing my fantasy novel series!

Where would you take a first-time visitor in Chandler? I grew up performing in musical theater, so I would take them to Chandler Center for the Arts to see a show and support our incredible local artists. It's a place that holds so many special memories for me and showcases the amazing arts community we have here in Chandler.

What's something people would be surprised to learn about you? People are often surprised to learn that I published a 400-page fantasy novel called A Legend of Golden Shadows before starting law school. I'm also a classically trained opera singer, which definitely catches people off guard!

This is our Style Issue! What does style mean to you? The Miss America crown is built on four points: scholarship, service, success, and style. To me, style is an opportunity to showcase creativity and individuality. One of my favorite parts of competing is designing my wardrobe, and I love finding unique ways to let my personality shine, which is what led me to be the only contestant on

How do you hope people remember your year as Miss Arizona? I hope people remember my year as Miss Arizona as one defined by service, compassion, and lasting impact. If I can inspire even one young girl to believe in herself, help survivors feel seen and supported, and leave this organization stronger than I found it, then I will consider my year a success. Give Your Home a Boost With Stylish Shades and Pops of Color ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARA | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY SUE ADAME

Exterior colors

If you're looking for a change of scenery in your daily life, paint is one of the fastest, easiest, and most budget-friendly ways to transform your home. But with seemingly never-ending options ranging from traditional to trendy, selecting your colors can be overwhelming. A good place to start is by choosing shades and color schemes that are new and stylish. A warm, versatile palette is where preferences are shifting to, says Sue Adame, owner of Eagle Ridge Color Consulting, which provides in-home services for interior and exterior painting projects. “More homeowners are keeping things light with off-white and colors that are very soft and neutral,” Adame says. “Everyone is looking for a little more peace in their life, and they’re looking for calm, neutral colors, but they still want color.” A monochromatic, layered, textured look is the way to accomplish this. Start by selecting a color—such as an off-white or light tan—for the common area. Then, choose a tone or two deeper with beiges or latte- and mushroom-inspired hues in secondary spaces. To finish, add a rich brown or charcoal hue for a touch of elegance. “Layering your colors in a shade or two off from each other creates depth,” Adame says. Incorporating the “60-30-10 rule” is also helpful. The common color, such as a light natural tan or pale beige, comprises 60% of your home’s color that’s reflected on your walls and sofa, for example. The secondary color accounts for 30% of the palette and is used for focal walls and accent furniture. CONTINUED >

Layered neutral colors

The remaining 10% is where you can be expressive, using bolder colors on a kitchen island, range hood, or built-ins. In addition to neutrals, earthy greens, terracotta, and similar nature-inspired colors are also making a comeback. They are well-suited for adding pops of color with accent pillows, rugs, and even an often-overlooked feature. “The inside of your entry door is a great place where you can have some fun,” Adame says. “It’s only a quart of paint, and you see it everywhere you walk through the home. That brings a little bit of satisfaction, and you don’t feel the need to push that bold color on the wall.” But the power of pigment goes beyond the brushstroke. It can transform amenities that the paint never touches. “I’ve been able to save carpet, flooring, and furniture just by changing the perimeter with color,” Adame says. “Choosing the right paint color can save homeowners so much money and make them so happy.” EagleRidgeColorConsulting.com

YOU-PICK BOUQUETS FROM RURAL STEMS FLOWER FARM ADD COLOR AND STYLE TO ANY HOME ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JETT ARREDONDO

WHERE

BEAUTY BEGINS As Jody van Rijn, founder of Rural Stems Flower Farm, likes to say, what started out as “a few flowers in a livestock water trough and a vacated donkey field” has now turned into her dream come true.

38

M UST SE E | L I FE + C ULTU RE

For as long as she can remember, Van Rijn has loved flowers and how beautiful blossoms can help evoke memories and feelings. “I grew up on a dairy farm and married a Dutch dairyman, so agriculture runs deep in our families,” Van Rijn says, adding that after visiting the Netherlands many times and marveling at the beauty of the flowers growing there, she decided to try growing flowers in the desert. Van Rijn started her first garden in the summer of 2024 with four raised beds filled with flowers from a local nursery. Next, she tried growing her own flowers from seeds that were sprouted under indoor lights. Van Rijn’s proverbial green thumb proved so successful that she soon had numerous large soil flower beds with drip lines, watering stations, and timers. “At this point the garden was still a hobby, but soon I needed to create an outlet for the blooms,” Van Rijn says. After some reading and research, Van Rijn learned about the concept of a You-Pick flower farm, where people purchase a ticket for a two-hour time slot where they learn about the flowers and how to properly cut and process them before creating their own lovely bouquet to take home. “This idea resonated with me because I enjoy people and I loved the idea of a small connection and community being created at the same time. Providing a peaceful, beautiful, and colorful space for guests to enjoy seemed wonderful to me,” she says. “Flowers are a beautiful way to add color, style, and aroma to your home. I challenge you to walk past a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers and not gaze, stare, and inhale a big breath of their aroma.” In the spring of 2025, Van Rijn opened Rural Stems Flower Farm on her family’s East Valley farmland. “We are primarily a public and private You-Pick flower farm, but I also love creating bouquets for orders for different events in life,” Van Rijn says. “Another facet of our farm is photography sessions, and we do a small amount of on-farm sales for bridal florists.” CONTINUED >

39

At the flower farm, Van Rijn uses gardening practices that she describes as “tied back into our beginnings.” For example, she emphasizes creating healthy soil and plants by adding nematodes, fertilizing, and using beneficial insects to improve the quality of the stems. “Growing flowers is also beautifully cyclical,” she notes. “We mainly grow hardy annuals which begin their cycle in August by growing from seed, then we plant them in October, where they spend the winter establishing strong roots, so when the optimum spring weather presents itself, the plants are ready to bloom.” As Van Rijn notes, one of the joys of operating the You-Pick flower farm is offering her guests many varieties and color palettes from which to choose. “I feel that my guests and the blooms have individual personalities, and I love to observe those that tend toward the bridal colors like the blushes, pinks, and peaches, the bold and bright colors like the reds, yellows, blues, and purples, or the dark and moody palette.” As she works with her guests, Van Rijn also enjoys hearing the reasons they feel connected to certain flowers and varieties. “It can be the memories of sweet peas in their grandma’s garden, the sunflower seeds that they planted with their mom, or even how certain aromas send them back to their childhood as they remember that certain blooms were in their home on a regular basis.” Van Rijn enjoys spending her days with her guests and a variety of flowers, as well as the many butterflies, beneficial insects, and hummingbirds that stop by on a regular basis. “Flowers are subtle, but also powerful in their ability to bring a smile to your face, joy to your day, and beauty to your life,” she says. STYLISH AND PR ACTICA L

House of Henr y Features Beautifully Made, Custom-Milled Children’s Clothing That Is Exceptionally Comfortable and Durable ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JETT ARREDONDO

42

NOW OP E N | STYL E + BE AU T Y

As CEO and founder of House of Henry, a premium baby and children’s clothing store, Darci Pratt is a real-life example of the classic expression, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” When Pratt’s son Henry was born six years ago, she found herself constantly searching for children’s clothing that was beautiful, practical, and durable.

“We work closely with a small group of trusted manufacturing partners who bring our designs to life.” —Darci Pratt These often-frustrating and fruitless shopping quests inspired Pratt—who had spent almost eight years in retail leadership roles with companies like Abercrombie & Fitch, Anthropologie, and Bloomingdale’s—to create and launch her own line of children’s clothing. “Parents invest so much in their kids, and I wanted to create pieces that weren’t just adorable for one season, but could truly keep up with childhood,” Pratt says, adding that House of Henry was officially launched in May of 2022. “That vision led me to develop my own custom-milled House Blend Bamboo fabric, which is buttery soft, breathable, hypoallergenic, incredibly stretchy, and durable enough to become what I like to call ‘hand-me-down quality.’” House of Henry carries clothing from newborn sizes through about six years, including pajamas, rompers, dresses, everyday playwear, and seasonal collections. At first, Pratt sold the clothing at outdoor markets across the Valley. But it didn’t take long for House of

Henry to develop a loyal customer base, so after a period of consistent sales, Pratt took on a short-term lease at an East Valley mall. “The response was overwhelming and confirmed what we had hoped—that our customers wanted a permanent place to shop House of Henry,” Pratt says, adding that in late June, she opened a brick-and-mortar location in Gilbert. “The community has been incredibly supportive, and we’re so grateful. One of my favorite parts has been seeing familiar faces from our market days walk through the doors and say, ‘We’ve been waiting for this!’” As Pratt notes, every House of Henry clothing piece is part of her own brand. “We work closely with a small group of trusted manufacturing partners who bring our designs to life,” she says. “Our prints are created alongside talented artists and designers, and every collection is thoughtfully developed from concept to finished product. In fact, CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / C HA N D L E R

I’ve even designed several of our prints and clothing styles myself.” No matter which clothing items they select, shoppers can rest assured that quality is at the heart of everything Pratt does at House of Henry. “Our clothing is intentionally designed to last through spills, playground adventures, countless washes, and multiple children. We believe children’s clothing shouldn’t be disposable,” she says. Beyond the clothing, Pratt says customer experience is what truly sets House of Henry apart. “We’re a small family business, which means every customer matters to us. Whether someone shops online, visits us at a market, or walks into our store, we genuinely want them to feel welcomed, appreciated, and excited to come back,” she says. “Many of our customers have been with us since our very first pop-up markets, and now we’re watching them return as their families grow. Those relationships mean everything to us.” While shoppers appreciate the full line of House of Henry clothing, Pratt says the bamboo pajamas are especially popular. “They are definitely a customer favorite because they’re incredibly soft and designed to fit much longer than traditional pajamas, thanks to the stretch of our fabric,” she says. House of Henry’s daywear pieces, especially the twirl dresses and bell rompers, have also become highly recognizable styles. “Parents love that they grow with their child, transition through multiple seasons, and are comfortable enough for everyday adventures,” Pratt says. “One of my favorite things is seeing siblings coordinating in different prints. We design many of our collections so families can mix and match while still giving each child their own personality.” Looking back, Pratt—who is married to a City of Chandler firefighter and is now also mom to Emma, age 3, and Lucy, who will turn 2 in October—is delighted with her decision to open House of Henry.

“At the end of the day, we’re not just selling children’s clothing. We’re building a brand rooted in family, community, and creating products that parents can truly feel good about putting on their children.” —Darci Pratt “I’ve always wanted to own a business, but motherhood gave me the courage to finally build one,” Pratt says. “Our goal has always been to create more than just a clothing store. We wanted to build a place where families feel welcome, kids are excited to visit, and parents know they’ll receive genuine, personal service every time they come in. Watching that vision come to life has been incredibly rewarding.” Pratt also thoroughly enjoys the relationships she has developed with her customers.

“I love watching families grow alongside our business. We meet parents when they’re expecting their first baby, then before we know it, they’re coming back shopping for a younger sibling, celebrating birthdays with us, or stopping in just to say hello,” she says. “At the end of the day, we’re not just selling children’s clothing. We’re building a brand rooted in family, community, and creating products that parents can truly feel good about putting on their children.” HouseOfHenry.co

Warm Trends, Lasting Style Valley Homeowners Are Embracing Unique Textures, Varied Wood Tones, and Earthy Colors for Beautifully Livable Spaces For several years, the design conversation revolved around bright white kitchens and cool gray tones. Around Phoenix, that mood is changing. People are now asking for rooms that read warmer and richer, with more variation, more depth, more “you notice it when you walk in.” The stark white, gray, and black farmhouse look is giving way to layered, cozy interiors that feel curated instead of copied. When it comes to kitchen and bath design, a major shift shows up in the woodwork. Natural cabinetry is back, and so are furniture-style vanities that feel more like a piece you’d find at a vintage market than a box you’d install. White oak with warm undertones, walnut, and medium stains bring character immediately, and they sit especially well with Arizona’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Color is returning, too, just with a calmer, more grown-up aesthetic. Earthy greens, softened terracotta, clay-like neutrals, and warm off-whites are edging out cooler tones. These new trends feel rooted in the landscape outside, and they make a home feel like a place you can exhale. Unique textures are another big trend we're seeing right now, and it's doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to making a home feel warm and inviting. Finishes like Venetian plaster and Roman clay, fluted wood details, handmade-look tile, and natural stone add depth and character without making a space feel busy.

Metal finishes haven’t disappeared; they’ve just softened. Brushed gold remains a favorite, though the look now is quieter and more restrained than the shiny brass moments of the past. With warm woods and natural materials beside it, this fan favorite lands as polished, not formal. Home Furnishing Trends Trends will always cycle, but today’s homeowners are consistently asking for rooms that feel comfortable, inviting, and true to the people living in them. Right now, we’re watching furniture move away from sharp, angular shapes and more toward softer pieces that make it easier to gather, lounge, and actually use the space.

Jackie Wright

Curves are a big part of that shift. Rounded sofas, sculptural curved chairs with unique accents, and circular coffee tables make spaces feel more open and friendly. They also help large areas feel tied together, a small tweak that can change the entire mood of the design aesthetic. Material mixing is also having a moment, and it’s a good one. Instead of buying a perfectly matched set, homeowners are pairing warm woods with woven rattan, natural stone, deep velvets, and textured fabrics. The result feels fresh, but also like it came together gradually, collected over time rather than ordered all at once. These combined elements add depth and contrast without overwhelming the eye. Coziness i‌ s ‌finally ‌f ront and center. Textured chenille, softened linen blends, and durable performance fabrics prove you can keep your home beautiful while it still stands up to everyday life. If you’re planning on updating your home this year, don’t run after every new look that pops up. Put your money into well-made pieces with timeless lines, bring in natural textures, and choose what works for the way your family actually lives. The homes that last are the ones that marry enduring basics with a few current accents so everything feels intentional and cohesive. Jackie Wright is the lead interior designer and owner at Macy Lane Designs, MacyLaneDesigns.com.
