- Sean Zimmerman, President and co-founderWhat does home mean to you? Is it a place just to sleep? A monthly bill that keeps a roof over your head? Is it a safe cocoon where you can let your guard down? And the biggest question—is it the place that most reflects who you are at your core?
These were some of my thoughts as we were putting together this issue, our Home Issue.
How many times do you think you know someone—maybe a co-worker who you chat with every day, a parent you hang out with on weekends during sports games, or a friend that you see at galas, always all dressed up—and you have an image of who they are until you finally see their home. It’s like an in-depth peek into their true selves. Maybe it reflects what you thought, and maybe it doesn’t. Maybe the home of the shy, quiet person is done in bright, loud colors and prints. Maybe the home of the person who dresses in muted colors reflects the same.
That’s the best thing about your home—it can be the best reflection of who you truly are.
My question to you is, does what you’re surrounding yourself with truly reflect you? Does it make you happy?
Right now, personally, I’m asking myself the same questions. We had a flood and most of our home was torn out. As we piece it back together, making changes in the process, I’m also trying to decide what best reflects me. When it’s done, I hope it reflects who I am at my core.
Enjoy the issue and the inspiration!
Yours,
March

ENJOY A BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING FIRE OUTSIDE— NO GAS LINE OR PROPANE NEEDED
Sitting by a fire bowl on a cool desert evening can be a relaxing way to unwind.
Because most fire bowls run on natural gas or propane, people who don’t have a gas line or aren’t keen on hauling heavy propane tanks will miss out on this soothing experience.
But thanks to AZ Fire Bowls and its innovative and elegant line of products, people can enjoy the ambiance of an outside fire anytime and anywhere they wish—no gas or propane needed.
“Our patent-pending design has a stainless-steel fuel tank that holds 180 ounces of clean-burning oil,” says Jason Kerestes, owner of AZ Fire Bowls, adding that he launched his company about two years ago after experiencing an overwhelmingly positive response at the Maricopa County Home and Garden Show and at farmers’ markets. “You just need to fill the tank with a paraffin lamp oil, tiki torch oil, or even citronella to keep the mosquitoes away.”
The included fiberglass wicks burn 1.2 ounces of oil per hour, or approximately 30 to 40 hours per tank.
“When you want to put the fire out, simply put the included five flame snuffers over the wicks and it will extinguish the flames and be ready to be re-lit for another day,” Kerestes says.
AZ Fire Bowls currently offers three designs: A concrete fire bowl and two stainless-steel fire bowls called the “Elevated Edge” and the “Infinite Horizon.”
Kerestes will soon introduce a new fire bowl that will combine fire and water.
“Called the ‘Fire Fall,' it will be stainless steel, but will have a scupper on it so you will get both fire and a waterfall,” he says.
People who are interested in seeing the fire bowls in person can make an appointment to visit the showroom.
“Since we are still a small business and only have a few employees, we do ask that our customers schedule a time to visit us to make sure we are not out of the office or in the middle of fabrication,” Kerestes says. “We love to meet all of our customers and want to make sure we have plenty of time to get to know them, show our designs, and answer all of their questions.”

Amidst the chaos of her busy life, she made a pivot: it was time to indulge in a little self-love. So, she decided to shake things up with a total facial rejuvenation surgery. The thought of undergoing procedures like an eyelift, cheek implants, and a face and neck lift seemed daunting at first. However, upon discovering that Dr. Haralson could perform them all in just one day, her apprehension turned into excitement. This one stop glam shop meant with one surgery, she could minimize her down time and maximize her time for embracing life with confidence and flair.
It wasn’t about chasing perfection, but about embracing her inner diva and having some fun! This was her way of saying, “Hello, gorgeous!” in the mirror every morning... Because in her world, self-care comes with a side of sparkle and a whole lot of sass!
When Diane and Roy Fuchs undertook their recent remodel, it was unexpected. They had been looking to add large glass sliding patio doors to their home and headed to a neighbor who had just installed the same feature to see if they liked it.
They loved the look of the doors—but fell in love with the remodel the neighbor had completed.
“The fireplace and the lights beside it are more than I would ever expect—it’s absolutely gorgeous.”
“We fell in love with the design,” Diane says. “And, our home is the same floor plan.”
Inspired by the look of that home, Diane and Roy reached out to Dena Thomas of Dena Thomas Designs (DenaThomasDesigns.com).
They kept the footprint of all the spaces but renovated almost everything else—only two bedrooms changed just paint and flooring. There were numerous niches and arches throughout, all of which were either removed or straightened.
“My inspiration was a classic design known for its moody atmosphere and stark contrasts,” says Thomas. “Notice the kitchen with the tech wood textures on both the custom hood and the island with a classic waterfall edge. We also did a hidden garage for the small appliances, and a glass rinser and USB pop-up on the island. There is also a hidden bookcase down the wall designed with the tech wood that reflects wainscoting.”
The couple loves the changes.
“I feel like I’m living in a model home,” Diane says. “The fireplace and the lights beside it are more than I would ever expect—it’s absolutely gorgeous. I love my countertops and the big work sink. I love that we did white, and went up with my backsplash behind the stove and added LED lights. The tiles in our bathrooms are awesome and unique, and the wallpaper by the piano is so beautiful. There are also magnets on the door stops, which is so handy when we bring in groceries.”
The finished remodel is “fresh, clean, timeless, and sophisticated, allowing for a minimal aesthetic,” says Thomas. “It’s a neutral backdrop, making it easy to incorporate various decor and art.”
Nathan Spencer, owner of Spencer 4 Hire Roofing, believes in the power of treating customers like family.
“I treat every roofing job like it is a roof over my own family’s head,” he shares.
This philosophy has served the local, family-owned business well, as they have been offering quality roofing services in Ahwatukee and the surrounding areas for 15 years. And, while they’ve been in the Valley since 2008, their roofing expertise spans across generations.
“I am a third-generation roofer; my grandpa owned a roofing company out of state for decades,” Spencer shares.
Together with his wife, Donna Spencer— who handles human resources for Spencer 4 Hire Roofing—they took their generations of roofing expertise and opened the company when their family moved to Ahwatukee from California.
“We started out small in 2008 but have kept growing, and we are so grateful for how the East Valley community has supported us throughout the years,” Donna says.
Spencer 4 Hire offers residential and commercial roofing, roofing repair, and installation services.
“It's our goal as a company to be a local resource for comprehensive roofing coverage,” Spencer says.
The family-owned business serves cities across the East Valley.
At Spencer 4 Hire Roofing, family is everything. The company has three generations of roofers—Spencer, the owner, his dad John, who is the superintendent, and his son Chris, who is following in their footsteps.
“We have a supervisor on every job daily to make sure that everything is watched and kept to the highest standards.”
“Our team has over 40 years of experience and contains three generations of roofers who are all professionally licensed, insured, and bonded,” Spencer says. “Our vision is to better lives, to better families, and to better our community. We do this by treating each other and our clients with respect and integrity.”
Spencer emphasizes that quality service and a close family bond sets the company apart.
“What makes our business stand out is not only our years of expertise, but our integrity and the way we structure each job,” he says. “We have a supervisor on every job daily to make sure that everything is watched and kept to the highest standards. We clean every job site every single day and we protect customers’ air conditioners, swimming pools, and more. We keep customers informed every step of the way and are always open to customer feedback.”
“While Nathan is the company owner and does more business strategy and leadership tasks these days, it’s not uncommon to see him put on a tool belt and help wherever is needed,” Donna says.
“I am never afraid to get my hands dirty,” Spencer says. “It’s a team effort.”
- Nathan SpencerDonna adds that Spencer 4 Hire Roofing focuses not only on each customer’s home but also the community. For example, the company was the grand sponsor of the 47th Annual Ahwatukee Easter Parade—complete with one of their employees dressing up as the Easter Bunny. Through the years, they have supported multiple local nonprofits and community events, including Kiwanis of Ahwatukee, the Lupus Foundation of America, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Armer Foundation for Kids, the Festival of Lights, and many more.
“We have always given back to the community because, without them, we wouldn’t be here,” Donna says.
“Our word is our bond and community, and family is everything,” Spencer adds. “We just happen to use roofing as a platform to serve our community and neighbors.
“For locals who haven’t worked with us before and want to connect to see what we’re all about, we always welcome them to come visit our office. We love when customers come and see what we’re all about—our family is always excited to meet other local families.”

Nestled within the prestigious Circle G Riggs Ranch neighborhood in Chandler, this incredible home has undergone a complete transformation designed by the TomKat design team. For many months, we worked with our clients to locate a new home for their family. They were hoping for a custom home on an acre lot, but it was difficult to find the right property. At one point in the process, they decided to stay in their current home and have our design team update that home. Right before we started demo on their former home, the perfect property popped up on the market in one of the most highly coveted neighborhoods in our area, but it needed a full-scale update. As we toured the home, our design team talked through all of the possibilities of renovating each space and helped our clients envision how incredible the home could be.
Fast-forward to six months later, and they moved into their fully remodeled dream home in their dream neighborhood. The design process was led by lead designer Lisa Sroufe from our talented TomKat team and the construction completed by Prestwick Custom Homes. We are so happy for our clients and thrilled in their trust in us to not only guide them through the home purchase, but also the
renovation and decorating process to create their dream home.

Add a spa-like feel to your home with this refreshing soap recipe that's simple to make at home.
ARTICLE BY ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESThe art of soap making has come a long way since our grandmothers’ day. All the nourishing oils, beautiful colors, scents and exfoliants would have been a dream to her. Today, it is easy to custom make soap for any skin type. Adding oils such as avocado, olive, jojoba, and argon are just a few ingredients to make a rich smooth bar.
Not only do handmade soaps get super-fatted oils to add moisture, they can also include some amazing exfoliants, additives and scents. A few of my favorites are honey, aloe juice, goat’s milk, activated charcoal and clays.
If you want to get started making soap try this simple pour and mold recipe.
ingredients
•2 lb. goat’s milk melt-and-pour soap
•1 lemon rind, zested
•3 tablespoons of dried lavender buds
• 2 tablespoons of honey
•15 drops of lavender essential oil
•6 drops of lemon essential oil
• Jar or bowl for melting soap base
• Silicone mold
directions
Chop soap into smaller pieces. It will melt faster this way. Place in bowl and microwave (or double boil). Be careful to watch soap and not let it burn. If you are using microwave, heat in 30 second increments, stirring frequently. Once soap is melted add your essential oils first. Once essential oils have been added and mixed thoroughly, add the lavender buds, lemon zest and honey. Have your mold ready to go, on a flat, even surface. You’ll want to move quickly before the soap cools too much. Mix everything thoroughly again, and pour mixture into mold. Let the soap cool for 2-3 hours until bars are completely solid. Wrap or package however you like.

Cathy was amazing! She assisted me with selling my uncle’s home after he passed away. From getting the home cleaned to getting rid of the unwanted furniture, Cathy covered all of the bases. The process was smooth from start to finish, which was very much appreciated in such a tough circumstance. I would highly recommend her.

For more than 20 years, Dan Buettner has been fully committed to studying the health and longevity of Americans, as well as influencing the proper and attainable health-centric environments our communities should embody. What started with identifying five “blue zones” around the world—where people are living longer, as well as enjoying a higher quality of life in their elder years— has now also evolved into proactively creating ecosystems where our communities engage in setting the standard for clean health.
Buettner’s first cookbook, The Blue Zones Kitchen, is a fantastic resource, featuring ingredients and cooking methods that can increase longevity, wellness, and mental health. The recipes also include lifestyle tips such as proper portion sizes and the best times to eat dinner. Plus, check out his additional seven books that dig deep into everything from the exact foods you should eat to how your circle of friends and family can influence your quality of life.
Every time you go out to eat, you will consume an extra 300 calories that are laden with more sodium, sugar, and oil than eating at home. “Get your hands on a plant-based cookbook, pick a dozen recipes, and cook those with your family on Sundays. If you make the effort to cook it with your family, you will gain the skills and learn to make some good and whole food plant-based recipes.”
