To 2024 ...
January 2024 PUBLISHER

Ok, I'll be honest—it hasn't even been just a minute since my last workout. It's been, well, probably at least 16 years (prenatal yoga, anyone?!). Life got in the way. Running after kids (that's exercise, right?), doing errands, work ... you know how it goes. Growing up, I loved to move. If I wasn't curled up with a book, I was riding my bike around the block, playing Capture the Flag with neighbors, or at dance class. Ballet, tap, jazz—it didn't matter. I loved to dance. I was on my college's kickline team and even took dance classes after I was married. As we worked on this Health & Wellness issue, it reminded me how much I miss all of that. (And my kids are finally getting older—the oldest left for college and the youngest just started driving. Free time for me!) That all brings me to—welcome to 2024, the time to remember what we want to accomplish in the days ahead and intentionally make an effort to do so. A new year equals a reminder to restart, refresh, and reset our course (if we want to, of course). In this issue, we aim to help you start the year with several health and wellness topics. Meet CarolAnn Tutera, who is pioneering a health and wellness company. Also, since laughter is the best medicine, we introduce you to two local comics who keep us chuckling. We also have information on getting better sleep, a fun dental practice, ways to teach kids to cope, and more. As we head into the new year, I hope you find time to do everything you love, and especially, make time for health and wellness. Happy New Year and may this be your best year yet. Yours,

Two Local Comedians Bring Laughter to the East Valley

We have all heard the line that laughter is the best medicine. And for good reason. Laughter brings us together. It lessens the negative effects of stress. What better way to get healthy in this new year than by sharing laughter? As Danielle Williams, the Comedy Diva, says, “We laugh at the things that connect us all and that is where the story begins and ends. It’s our stories which bring us together, and through humor, our stories can, at times, be our saving grace.” Comedian Sidney Smith agrees. “Comedy is a great vehicle for bringing people together. Hearing those laughs is like hearing your favorite song,” he says.
SIDNEY SMITH
Sidney Smith grew up in the small rural town of Capac, an hour north of Detroit. “My siblings and I found some memorable challenges and great experiences, growing up as the only black kids in the school system,” he says. From an early age, Smith loved being onstage, where singing and performing was a way to quell his stutter. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, he moved to Arizona to join the Phoenix police department, but then discovered comedy.
“I walked into an open mic one night in Chandler, at the long-gone Bongos, and I have never looked back,” he shares. Comedy is something that comes naturally to Smith. “I don’t think you pick comedy,” he explains. “It picks you. It has to be in you … you have to be called to it.” He moved back to Michigan for a couple of years but returned to the Valley a little more than a decade ago to host a charity show at Stand Up Scottsdale. “It was during that time that my now wife and I reconnected, and she became the main catalyst for me to move back to Arizona,” he says. Smith credits the community with his success, saying, “Through it all, my fan base has taken the ride with me. It is so humbling to have people who were there when nobody cared and they just stayed true to what I was

trying to do, when they didn’t have to. And that means the world to me.” He arrives for shows about an hour before the performance to get a feel of the room and the crowd. “I want to feel the energy as the room fills and get a good read before the show starts,” he explains. “I want these folks to feel heard and to take this ride with me. And I want everyone to walk away with something positive.” Smith, who calls Stand Up Live, Tempe Improv, and CB Live his home stages, also performs regularly at Mic Drop Mania in Chandler. He travels frequently and has shared stages with greats such as David Spade, Sarah Silverman, Joey Diaz, Whitney Cumming, and Adam Carolla. But Smith has so much more planned for the future. “I never wanted my comedy to pigeonhole me,” he says. And there doesn’t seem to be any risk of that. He recently launched the You Hear Good Things

Danielle Williams, the Comedy Diva, is known as fun-loving, outgoing, positive, and energetic. She serves up family-friendly comedy that she calls observational and relatable humor. “Like the best girlfriend type of funny, it revolves around good stories and situations,” she explains. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Williams worked in radio jobs in California before taking a job at Power 92.3 in Arizona in 2002. While working with comedians through the radio, she received some solid advice to make sure she had some life behind her and stories to tell. She heeded the advice until 2014, when she first tried her hand at an open mic night in Scottsdale. Williams has performed across the country but enjoys her work at Mic Drop Mania in Chandler. “I enjoy performing and making people laugh,” she says. She also works with various nonprofits and aided the Chandler School District in helping fifth-grade students understand public speaking and storytelling as a way to boost their confidence and understand the power of their voices. Williams uses her comedy to show the power of telling stories with comedy. Recently, Williams—a non-smoker—fought back against Stage 4 lung cancer, which she says was one of the best things to happen to her. “It opened the door for me to share the positive side of going through a difficult life situation,” she explains. “When you can laugh in the face of near death and see the good in what this could mean, it’s life-changing.”

WHO YOU WORK WITH MATTERS was an absolute dream come true as an agent. We “ Cathy were in the process of trying to decide on a move to AZ and she was so flexible and responsive. When we found our home, she not only found us contractors but solicited bids and ensured work could be done on the property before we were able to move. She even connected us with a designer for furniture! I am stunned and so grateful at her willingness to go above and beyond. I cannot imagine having a better experience. You absolutely can not go wrong with Cathy working on your behalf.

A Guide to Healthier
Sleep
TIRED ALL THE TIME? THIS MAY BE YOUR ANSWER AS TO WHY
“Loud snoring, abrupt awakenings accompanied by choking or gasping, and persistent fatigue despite a full night’s sleep are common indicators. Additional signs include waking up with a sore throat, dry mouth, or Do you find yourself nodding off during the day? Tired even though you got your eight hours (or more!) of sleep? Does your brain feel foggy? It may not be your sleep. It may be … you. You may have what’s called sleep apnea, a disorder that disrupts normal breathing patterns during sleep. And not only does it make you sleepy, but it also affects your health.

LOCA LS ON LY | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
headaches. Mood swings, trouble concentrating, depression, and irritability may also point to underlying sleep apnea issues.”
The Symptoms According to Dr. Rich Higgs and his associates at Aquila Dental in Chandler, sleep apnea manifests through various symptoms. Loud snoring, abrupt awakenings accompanied by choking or gasping, and persistent fatigue despite a full night’s sleep are common indicators. Additional signs include waking up with a sore throat, dry mouth, or headaches. Mood swings, trouble concentrating, depression, and irritability may also point to underlying sleep apnea issues. Oral signs include redness of the throat and soft palate, teeth grinding or clenching, excessive tooth wear, the presence of tori (excessive bone development), and an enlarged tongue. “These signs help in diagnosing sleep apnea and determining the appropriate treatment,” says Dr. Higgs, who performs sleep apnea exams and offers treatments.
What You Can Do There are a few types of treatments for sleep apnea. One treatment that is effective for those with milder symptoms, explains Dr. Higgs, is a specially crafted oral device that aids in opening the airway, facilitating smoother breathing during sleep. Impressions are made of the mouth and teeth, creating a customized oral device. The fitting and adjustment of the device are crucial to its effectiveness, and patients are educated on the importance of consistent nightly use. Regular check-ups allow for necessary adjustments and, if required, the replacement of the device as it naturally wears or becomes damaged.
Yes, a Diagnosis and Treatment Are Important! Who wants to be tired all the time?! Beyond sleep quality, effective treatment positively impacts daytime alertness, mood, and concentration. “Getting diagnosed and proper treatment can elevate the quality of life for each patient,” explains Dr. Higgs. THE NEW MAPLE HOUSE OFFERS COFFEE, WINE, BEER, AND LOW ABV COCKTAILS
Downtown Chandler is now home to a new and inviting coffee and cocktail bar, where people can visit with friends and family late into the night while enjoying a variety of delicious beverages. Maple House, which opened in mid-December at 198 W. Boston St., is located in a 1940s residential cottage. “Maple House is the only late-night coffee shop in Downtown Chandler, and the first in the area offering a place to connect over freshly roasted coffee, wine, beer, and handcrafted, low ABV cocktails,” notes General Manager Stewart Martin, adding that they stay open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. “We have an impressive lineup, including seven low ABV libations and three non-alcoholic drinks, 22 taps including craft beer, nitro coffee and a rotating nitro tea, and 23 wines by the glass sourced from rare varieties around the world.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The property—which had featured maple trees when it was a residential property—has 8,500 square feet of indoor/ outdoor dining space, including three outdoor fireplaces, a permanent outdoor stage for live music, and tables with outlets for the working crowd. As Martin notes, Maple House is the fourth Downtown Chandler concept from noted restaurateur Gavin Jacobs and his longtime partner Jackie Hall. “As with all of Gavin’s concepts, he aimed to create a space that didn’t yet exist in Downtown, while honoring the history of the area,” Martin says. Martin, who has 25 years of experience with craft breweries and elevated eateries, previously worked for the James Beard Award-winning chef at Underbelly Hospitality in Texas, and most recently at Hidden House, which is located next door to Maple House. Maple House will rotate its selections, Martin notes, including offering unique beers from female-owned breweries, vegan and gluten-free beer, and rare varietals of wine. “To consistently push our creativity and provide something unique, we will have daily and weekly rotating nitro teas—from green to Thai tea—cocktails from housemade recipes, and will take recommendations from the community on types of drinks they’re looking for,” Martin says. Because Maple House doesn’t have a chef’s kitchen, Martin says they will offer small bites and snacks, as well as feature local food trucks. Jacobs says he is excited to bring global experiences to a local environment, one noteworthy beverage at a time. “Maple House is where connections begin, whether it's a friendly hangout, first date, or where you write the next great novel,” he says. “I’m passionate about continuing to serve the needs of Chandler and bring this new vision to life.” MapleHouseAZ.com

CarolAnn Tutera CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE SOTTOPELLE® METHOD AND TUTERA MEDICAL®
36
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | BEAU T Y
She’s an unstoppable industry maverick blazing new trails in the future of medicine. Under her leadership, Tutera Medical® was named the Best Hormone Practice in the state for eight years, and she has been named among the “Leading Businesswomen of Phoenix.” Let’s meet this extraordinary woman and learn how she co-founded SottoPelle® with her husband, Dr. Gino Tutera, as she celebrates the company’s 30th anniversary and the 20th year for Tutera Medical®.
DESCRIBE YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHERE YOU WERE BORN.
I’m from the Kansas City area. I got the entrepreneurial spirit from my father, who taught me about dedication and hard work at an early age. That is where I met my husband, who was practicing medicine as a board-certified OB-GYN. He began using bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) in 1979 to help prevent pregnancy loss.
WHEN DID YOU FORM THE COMPANY AND WHAT WERE YOUR INITIAL ROLES?
In 1992, the Eisenhower Hospital in Rancho Mirage, California, asked Dr. Tutera to help design and direct a birthing center. This is where he learned about hormone pellets and developed individual dosing, along with a proprietary system. He is the true pioneer and most likely the only reason people are using pellet therapy today. I realized, while working in the office in 1996 and seeing all these happy patients coming in for their pellets, that there was something remarkable happening. I became the entrepreneur that I am today as the behindthe-scenes marketing person who helped build this company. Dr. Tutera was the provider and the face of the company, giving lectures about pellet therapy and educating physicians.
WHEN DID YOU COME TO ARIZONA?
Our passion for helping people is what brought us to Arizona. We moved here in 2004 to serve patients who were flying to California from Phoenix for pellet therapy. My husband and I worked together for 25 years to expand pellet therapy to a new level, combining our vision, passion, and talents to enhance patients’ quality of life.
WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON CONTINUING THE COMPANY AFTER HIS PASSING?
Dr. Tutera passed in 2015 and, for a long while, I wasn’t sure if I was able to move forward with building the company and carrying on his legacy. As time went on and I became stronger, I knew it was important to continue what we had built for the sake of our staff and patients.
HOW HAVE YOU INCREASED THE BUSINESS?
I have grown the company both within the U.S. and internationally, training more providers online and on-site. I have also expanded the Bolster Beauty™ line, with wellness products created by Dr. Tutera, to include nutraceuticals and hair products.
WHAT MAKES IT SUCCESSFUL?
Healthier and happier patients! We set the industry standard of how to do pellets the correct way, with the individual dosing method and a multi-patented dosing site. People trust SottoPelle® and know it’s the industry gold standard.
WHY DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO?
My satisfaction comes from reading over a thousand five-star reviews, hearing the providers praise our training course, and knowing how we have saved people’s lives and marriages.
WHEN DID YOU OPEN THE CHANDLER OFFICE? AND HOW MANY OFFICES DO YOU HAVE NOW?
We opened the Chandler office in 2012. We currently have four offices in Arizona.
“Our passion for helping people is what brought us to Arizona.”

SHARE WHAT SERVICES YOU OFFER …
Our primary core is pellet therapy for menopause and andropause. We also offer spa services of Botox, fillers, Semaglutide, and vaginal rejuvenation.
HOW DO YOU JUGGLE RUNNING THIS COMPANY WITH EVERYTHING ELSE YOU DO?
I feel like I am constantly working, but since I love what I do, it doesn’t feel like work. I have very long days running the company, interacting with the employees, and find myself working on my phone before and after hours. With everyone in different time zones, my day seems to stretch out as we are all in constant communication. I find time to work out, play pickleball, and take my dogs for walks. Gathering with friends for lunch and dinner helps round out the joy of my day. I also enjoy baking and just basking in the sun! I love my quiet time for inner reflection. Photo by Carl Schultz
DO YOU GIVE BACK?
We support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Honestly, we give back with the work we do to help people enjoy healthier lives.
HOW DO YOU HOPE YOU’RE IMPACTING PEOPLE WITH THE PRODUCT?
I don’t have to hope—I know. We are seeing people change their lives by enjoying happier marriages and being happier themselves, too, with greater energy and vitality!
HOPES FOR THE FUTURE?
Ongoing expansion! Dr. Tutera wanted as many providers as possible to have this knowledge so their patients could receive the best type of bioidentical therapy to help them age gracefully and prevent serious illnesses. My focus for the future is on this method’s positive impact on brain and mental health. We’re continuing to break new ground. SottoPelleTherapy.com and TuteraMedical.com

Dr. John Culp decided he wanted to be an orthodontist when he was in the eighth grade. Positive experiences with his own orthodontist inspired John’s interest in orthodontics. “After I enjoyed learning and practicing restorative dentistry in dental school and realized I loved working with kids, I decided to switch to pediatric dentistry,” he says. In 1994, John fulfilled his goal when he and his wife Karen opened Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry & Orthodontics in the East Valley, after visiting and falling in love with the area. “Our original location was a tiny 946-square-foot office with four chairs,” John says, adding that he and his staff quickly outgrew this space after one year. After their first son was born, the Culps took a weekend trip to Seattle. While they were there, they visited the Children’s Museum near the Space Needle. “Inside, there was an area where each of the world’s biomes were represented. You could walk right into the tundra or grasslands or jungle,” John says. “Karen and I thought how cool it would be to have each room at Jungle Roots also be like going into a different biome.” The Culps asked the manager of the Children’s Museum who built the unique display and were delighted to learn it was a Tucson-based business called The Larson Company. After meeting with the company to discuss their vision for the interior of Jungle Roots, the Culps decided on a theme, and soon were in a jungle-themed office. “We were the first office in America to incorporate a theming in a pediatric dental office,” John says. Over the years, Jungle Roots has not only expanded its office size and number of patients, but also its staff and services. For example, Dr. Gregory Olsen provides orthodontic services to young patients, and Dr. Jason Brady is a
dental anesthesiologist. A team of hygienists and office staff round out the practice. As Karen notes, while the jungle theme definitely helps set Jungle Roots apart by creating a calming and engaging environment for children, so does their commitment to providing 5-star patient care and customer service. “We want our patients to have a memorable visit, but more than that, we want them to have a positive experience that lasts with them as they continue their dental journey,” Karen says. “To attain this goal, we welcome patients into our practice as if we were welcoming them into our home. And it is a home for them, actually a dental home, where they can have all of their pediatric dental needs met, and orthodontics in-house, setting them up for a lifetime of dental health.” For John, treating his patients as he would his own three boys is very important to him. He develops relationships with each of his patients, always considering what is in their best interest. “The utmost compliment and tribute is that I have many patients who came to me as kids themselves and now bring their own children. It is very rewarding and inspiring,” John says. When they are not working at Jungle Roots, the Culps enjoy traveling with their family, and giving back to the community however they can. For instance, Karen teaches group fitness classes at the Ahwatukee YMCA, and the Culps support local youth sports, participate in local events, and donate to local schools, organizations, and churches. Looking back, the Culps are pleased with their decision to open Jungle Roots in the same area they call home. “This is definitely our community,” John says. JungleRoots.com

TEACHING KIDS How to Cope
HOW TO DEVELOP THE VITALLY IMPORTANT SKILL ARTICLE BY ELIZABETH WORTON, LPC
46
S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
“Childhood is full of opportunities to explore different types of coping skills that can distract, regulate, and process the everyday stressors of being a kid.” Playing soccer, baking cookies, playing the guitar, and writing poetry—they are four different activities with one common theme: coping skills for children. In today’s world with a bigger drive and a more open mind to take care of our mental health, we focus on what our children can do to help their own. It’s an important concern and one that, in certain ways, has already been addressed by naturally being a kid. Coping skills play an important role to help us regulate and process the tough events in our lives. For adults, we tend to default on classic thought analysis, deep breathing, and meditation. For children, however, this is not always possible, especially with all the developmental changes happening. Luckily, childhood is full of opportunities to explore different types of coping skills that can distract, regulate, and process the everyday stressors of being a kid. So exactly what type of activities can parents encourage and teach their children to do to learn to cope? This varies by a child’s interest, but there are big themes to focus on: physical activity, expressive arts, and relaxation skills.
THE BIG THEMES
Physical activity skills can be anything from playing a school sport to going for a walk. Expressive arts skills can be things like crafting, creating music, or writing. Relaxation skills are activities like listening to calming music, watching a funny TV show, or working on a puzzle.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A PARENT
As a parent, you can further help teach your child any of the skills by joining your child in any of the activities and reflecting on how the activity helped. Using questions like, "Do you feel emotionally different from before we did the activity versus after? How so?” or “Does it feel like you can put more order to your thoughts now about what was bothering you?” can help a child realize how the skill helps them or if they need to find something different. Overall, the best way to teach your child a coping skill is to model your own and talk about how it helps. Elizabeth Worton, LPC, is a therapist at Ellie Mental Health South Chandler. ARIZONA WELLNESS presented by Liquid Mobile
5 Essential Tips for Staying Healthy During Cold & Flu Season As we approach the cold and flu season, it becomes increasingly important to prioritize our health and take preventive measures to stay well. One approach that has gained popularity in recent years is IV hydration. IV hydration, also known as intravenous hydration, offers a range of benefits that can help us recover faster from cold and flu symptoms while strengthening our immune system. Here are five key facts you should know about IV hydration.
IV Hydration for Improved Absorption IV hydration is also useful for individuals who have difficulty taking oral medications or have compromised digestive systems. Some people with cold and flu symptoms may struggle to swallow pills or keep down food and water due to throat pain, nausea, or a weak stomach. IV therapy helps ensure that necessary medications and fluids are delivered directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. Rapid Relief from Symptoms One of the main reasons why IV hydration is effective for cold and flu is its ability to provide immediate relief and replenishment. When we are sick, our bodies often become dehydrated due to fever, sweating, and increased mucus production. Drinking fluids orally can take time to be absorbed and may not provide sufficient hydration. IV hydration, on the other hand, bypasses the digestive system and delivers fluids directly into the bloodstream. This allows for rapid absorption and re-hydration, providing fast relief from symptoms such as dry mouth, fatigue, and dizziness.
Boosting Immunity with Essential Nutrients In addition to hydration, IV therapy can also deliver essential vitamins and minerals that support our immune system’s fight against cold and flu viruses. Illness can deplete our nutrient stores as our bodies work hard to combat the infection. IV hydration can be tailored to include a blend of vital nutrients such as vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, zinc, and magnesium. These nutrients are known to strengthen immune function and aid in faster recovery from illness. Convenience and Safety It is crucial to emphasize that IV hydration should always be administered by qualified healthcare professionals. These professionals have the necessary expertise to assess your condition, customize the IV fluids and nutrients to your specific needs, and closely monitor your response to the therapy. The convenience of IV hydration is that qualified mobile nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians can administer it in the safety of your own home. This minimizes your risk of exposure to crowded locations when you are in a weakened state, prioritizing your safety.
A Personalized Approach to Your Care Each individual’s health needs are unique, and IV hydration allows for customization to address specific requirements. Whether you have difficulty taking oral medications, struggle with dehydration, or need a boost to your immune system, IV therapy can be tailored accordingly. Seasoned healthcare professionals administering therapy should assess your condition, consider your medical history, and create a personalized plan to ensure optimal results.

Hamilton Senior Publishes STEM-Focused Children’s Book ‘MAYA’S TINY WARRIORS’ HELPS EXPLAIN HOW THE IMMUNE SYSTEM WORKS
Manasi Vegesna For years, Manasi Vegesna suffered from frequent tonsillitis, fevers, and headaches. After being diagnosed with allergies, Vegesna researched natural remedies to help her understand and improve her immune system. These experiences inspired Vegesna, a 17-year-old senior at Hamilton High School, to write a children’s book that helps young readers learn about how their bodies work. Called Maya’s Tiny Warriors, the STEM-focused book tells the story of a young girl who wakes up with the flu, and the “tiny warriors” in her immune system that fight to make her better. “I’ve always loved books and felt that I could relate to the characters in them. So, when I wanted to share my own story and talk about my love for immunology, I knew that a book would be the best option,” Vegesna says, adding that she hopes the book will raise awareness of the upcoming and pertinent field of immunology science. Maya’s Tiny Warriors, which is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, also features Indian characters, who Vegesna feels are underrepresented in children’s books. Vegesna, who is of Indian descent, wanted to create a book in which readers like her can see and relate to the characters. “I would’ve definitely loved Maya's Tiny Warriors as a kid, especially when I didn't know exactly what was going on with my immune system when I got sick, and I hope this book can be a guiding light for others,” she says.
