In this month of love, it’s easy for me to count the things I love. My family, my friends, traveling, bright blue skies, good books, and cheesy television shows (a guilty pleasure, what can I say?!). And of course, the amazing place that is Chandler. There’s so much to love here—the people, the weather, the restaurants, the activities. And most importantly, the opportunities. In fact, it was one of those opportunities that led Chandler native Casey Likes down his career path and to his debut role on Broadway as the lead in “Almost Famous.” Casey grew up acting in Valley theaters and, through that, ended up in New York. Read the story to see what happened! We also asked resident Jen Peters to share some of her holiday creations. Jen is passionate about finding ways to share her love, creativity, and joy with others. Look at what she’s created and we think you’ll agree that she does it incredibly well! Love wine? Jen Peters is a mom of three (now adult) children. Creative by nature, she always enjoys adding “a bit of love” in all she does and sharing it with others. She says she loves holidays and devising new ways to share her love, creativity, and joy with others. Take a look at a few of her Valentine’s Day creations.

AS A GIFT These DIY mini sugar cookie pizzas are sweet, easy, and not too cheesy for any age. You can even add a personalized card and a little “dough” for the teen in your life, too. To make them, Peters used 6-inch corrugated Kraft boxes for the pizza box (find them at a craft store or on Amazon). She cut them to size and placed checkered food liners for the cookie pizza to sit on. She also added a little heart surprise on the inside lid. Use your favorite (non spread) sugar cookie recipe. Get creative! Add red/pink frosting for the sauce, sprinkles for the cheese, and any other topping you’d like. “I find heart candies make the cutest pepperonis,” Peters says. “To finish the box, I added personalized labels. This makes the recipient feel a bit more special, too.”

A CRAFT Have leftover candy canes from the holidays? Here is a simple way to repurpose them, by turning them into hearts for Valentine’s Day! All you need are two sealed candy canes to make each heart, a little hot glue, and ribbon. Gather your candy canes, pair them up, and form each one into a heart. Next, add a dab of hot glue to the curved ends and bottoms where they match up. Hold the ends together until firm. Lastly, wrap them with ribbon. “I dab more glue at the bottom connection point and work my way around,” Peters says. The candy cane ribbon hearts can then be used in a variety of ways to add interest to your Valentine’s Day decor. Tie them end to end to make a whimsical banner, glue them together in a circle to make a wreath, or add them to a floral arrangement or any tablescape—or, as Peters did here, simply add them to candle holders.

Entertaining with charcuterie boards is so much fun! There is no right or wrong way to create them. “My daughter Abbie and I are a culinary team when it comes to board making,” Peters shares. “We like to choose fresh and dried fruits, meats, nuts, and finger foods that not only are flavorful, but are also aesthetically pleasing when theming a board.” To make the board pictured on the first page, the two used heart-shaped cookie cutters to shape the food, heart dishes to hold small items, candies, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and made roses out of meats to go with the Valentine’s Day theme. They then plated everything onto a heart-shaped plate. Peters advises making sure allergies are taken into consideration if you are gifting a board. Otherwise, have fun getting creative!

Stage Star Chandler Native Casey Likes is Lighting Up Broadway ARTICLE BY SHANA SCHWARZ

The old adage “right place, right time” can lead to all sorts of happy accidents in life. From landing a job to meeting a soulmate, one never knows where a simple twist of fate might lead them. For Casey Likes, being in the right place/time (and being massively talented) led to a dream coming true. “I was in my [Chandler] high school production of Les Misérables when I won the ASU Gammage High School Theater Award,” Likes explains. “That sent me to the Jimmy Awards in New York. The people from Almost Famous were watching when I performed there. I met Cameron Crowe at my first callback in L.A. a week after the

Jimmy Awards. We ended up really vibing off each other. Two weeks later, I was in rehearsal with him.” And thus, Casey Likes went from being a hometown theater kid to originating a lead role on Broadway. Almost Famous had been turned into a musical, adapted from the 2000 film version. After doing an out-of-town opening in San Diego in 2019 with Likes playing the lead role of William, it was scheduled to hit Broadway in 2020. It finally opened in New York City in November of 2022. Likes grew up performing in local shows, starting with A Christmas Carol,

where he played Tiny Tim at just 3 years old. It was an Actor’s Theatre production at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix alongside his mom, Chandler High School Theater Director Stephanie Likes. A case of like mother, like son, Likes is now on Broadway, following in his mom’s footsteps. “My mom got me into theater,” he says. “She was on Broadway in Les Mis as a double cover for Eponine and Cosette. She didn’t force me—she left the door open. She’s so great. She raised my sister and me practically by herself with the help of my grandparents. It’s an amazing story that she accomplished so many dreams at a young age, and now she’s giving back to the next generation. She’s had really talented kids come through her program. She knows how to direct, and she knows theater. How many theater teachers can say they’ve actually done Broadway?” From Tiny Tim to roles like Jack Kelly in Newsies and The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, both at Greasepaint Theater, Likes has been wowing audiences for two decades. He attributes his current success not only to his mom, but to the local theaters that shaped him and helped build a love of performing. Both Greasepaint Theater in Scottsdale and Chandler High School have been churning out incredible talent lately, with Likes shining especially bright among them. When asked what other local kids with Broadway dreams should do to follow in his footsteps, Likes says humbly, “I’m so honored to be asked. The people who make it the farthest are the people who don’t stop working. They are always taking voice lessons, always working on their craft. The people who lost it are the people who sit back on their talent.” And sitting back and waiting for Broadway to reopen was something Likes definitely didn’t do. In the time between Almost Famous opening in San Diego and Broadway, he even picked up a couple of movie roles. Jordan, the original Broadway Jack Kelly in Newsies) and as a monster-fighting young man in a new horror film called Dark Harvest. But for now, it’s time to focus on Almost Famous and to enjoy the years Likes might have spent in college by making pseudo-college memories with his cast and new friends. And although he still thinks of Arizona as home, he knows this opportunity is one most kids only dream of. Likes turned 21 on Christmas Day and is too superstitious to voice what other dreams he still has, but is instead pouring himself into this moment and this role. “I hadn’t seen the movie at all,” he says when asked about Almost Famous. “My mom made me watch it. I thought what he [Patrick Fugit as William] did in the movie was perfect. I wanted to respect it as much as I

possibly could. Early on, it was clear to the creatives that we wanted to find something that was uniquely mine. By using the connective tissue of loving music and being a fan, we kinda found something that made you feel the way Patrick felt—the way Patrick made audiences feel.” The story follows William as he tours the country with a fictitious band called Stillwater, writing a cover story for Rolling Stone at only 15 years old. Who would Likes have liked to follow at that age? “Green Day,” he says with no hesitation. “I’d actually still want to follow them now.” So many big things are happening for Likes that it won’t be long before he’s a household name. Like his favorite band might say and from everyone back home, one hopes he will have the time of his life as it happens.

Michael L. Feather Art has the indescribable power to take us on an adventure without having to move a muscle. Lucky for locals, Chandler and the East Valley are home to gifted artists and impressive art collections that showcase talent in a variety of mediums.

CAPTURING CHANDLER ONE DRAWING AT A TIME Freelance artist Michael L. Feather is an urban sketcher, which means he creates works of art by drawing on-location locally or during his travels. “What I love about this style is the quick nature of it, the capturing of what is around me,” he explains. “Documenting beauty, recording it moment by moment, and then sharing it with others brings me joy.” Feather re-discovered his love for art while working from home at the height of the pandemic. “I needed to break out of the box I was in,” he says. “Art gave me a wonderful outlet for all that pent-up creativity.” Since then, Feather has been busy honing his colorful craft locally and abroad. Last summer, he participated in the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile pilgrimage walking across northern Spain, drawing daily for 33 days. He also documents life in Chandler and Gilbert, capturing the beauty in familiar locations and sharing them on social media (@13colorsart). “Chandler is truly amazing, and I look forward to getting to know its nooks and crannies one drawing at a time.” 13ColorsArt.com

SHINING IN MULTIPLE MEDIUMS

Jason Stillman

Artist Jason Stillman works with a variety of mediums and enjoys the challenges that come with each. “I have worked with ceramic sculpture, bronze, castings, steel art fabrication, as well as painting and various 2-D artworks,” he says. “I would say being able to work successfully in many mediums was a key to my survival as a working artist in the early days.” Stillman’s recent projects include a life-sized Arabian horse in polished stainless steel and his Evolution of Flora series, with trees created out of stainless steel. When it comes to painting, his most recent works have included producing collage paintings where, instead of paint, pieces of magazines and other decorative paper are used to produce the images. While the East Valley is home, Stillman’s work can be seen globally. “I have been lucky and grateful over the years to be commissioned to produce these works for various clients around the country and a number of others in countries around the world,” says the Arizona native and Arizona State University grad, who has degrees in studio art and mechanical engineering, StillmanArt.com CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “With such one-ofa-kind pieces, we realized we had to do something more with the collection.” SRP CURATES ONE-OF-A-KIND FINE ART COLLECTION When you think of fine art collections, your local utility company likely doesn’t come to mind. But Salt River Project (SRP) boasts an impressive collection of art where each piece tells the story of water and power. When SRP began a remodel of its Tempe administrative building, it enlisted the help of James Burns, executive director of Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, and ASU interns to catalog the collection. With 177 pieces, the impressive collection features work by famed artists Eric Orr, Ansel Adams, and Michelle Stewart. Arizona-based artists Anne Coe and Lisa Albuquerque are also included in the collection, in addition to a variety of Latino and Native American artists. “We have some huge names in the art world right now, and we had the foresight to commission art from them when they were rising stars,” says SRP Senior Community Outreach Representative Ileen Snoddy. The team is first working to inventory all the pieces at SRP’s Information Services Building to have it all appraised. Next, they’ll assess the art collection and curate an exhibit in the changing gallery space in the Heritage Center located at SRP’s administration building. “With such one-of-a-kind pieces, we realized we had to do something more with the collection,” Snoddy says. When d'Vine Gourmet co-owner Andrew McCreery talks about some people being dismissive of Arizona wines, he understands where they are coming from. It wasn’t too long ago when he was right there with them. “They think of the fun labels and kitschy names, but it’s really evolved into so much more. I’ve come full circle as a wine professional, having gone from dismissive to just amazed,” McCreery says. Along with his wife Denise, who founded the Chandler specialty shop that sells local goods, gift baskets, and, of course, wine, d'Vine Gourmet is one of the places in the Valley that specialize in Arizona vino. A sommelier with 28 years of experience in the industry, McCreery savors every opportunity to sing local wines’ praises, and educate those under the impression that the industry is where it was decades ago.

The high elevations in Southern Arizona’s wine-growing regions of Sonoita, Elgin, and Willcox—where the vast majority of the state’s grapes are grown—top 4,300 feet, putting it on par or even higher than many of the world’s most lauded vineyards. The soil composition shares commonality with the soil in Napa Valley, and the Arizona terroir has similarities to the world’s warmer mature wine regions of Spain, Italy, and Southern France. All of this makes for an ideal grape-growing locale in an area most consider prime for only cacti. And in the hands of talented winemakers, this desert fruit becomes truly worthy of farm-to-glass treatment. “I credit this evolution to the visionary winemakers. They are the ones leading the pack, the ones taking the chances, dedicating their resources and their lives to creating quality Arizona wines,” McCreery says.

And to those who claim they don’t like Arizona wine, McCreery challenges: “Maybe you haven’t tried the right one yet.” Here are the wines that are strong on McCreery’s radar.

MERKIN VINEYARDS CHUPACABRA RED This blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre—or GSM in wine vernacular—is the wine McCreery finds himself recommending most. It hits all the desired notes, and at $22 a bottle, it’s also very debit card-friendly. “It’s a Goldilocks wine. Not too big. Not too light. It’s just right. People like that because they can bring a wine like this to a party or a dinner and everybody can enjoy.”

“I’ve come full circle as a wine professional, having gone from dismissive to just amazed.” -ANDREW MCCREERY Arizona does better than anywhere in the world, including Italy. “I’ve tasted it against the Chianti Classico. I think it beats it,” he says. “I love drinking Sangio. It’s like drinking a glass of crushed velvet. It’s so smooth and flavorful, and that’s what I get from Flying Leap’s Sangiovese.”

FOUR TAILS VINEYARD VIOGNIER AND PETE ROSE This vineyard is run by husband-and-wife owners Cale and Barb, who is also a Chandler native, and all wines are named after their own four-legged family members. Viognier is another grape that McCreery feels Arizona represents exceptionally well. As a sommelier and someone who has been in the wine business for decades, McCreery has traveled to the Rhone region of France, from where Viognier hails. He puts Arizona’s rendition in the same league, if not a notch above. “In Arizona, there’s a lot of stone fruit to our Viognier. It’s so clean, refreshing, and just a special wine—and Four Tails does it best.” The dry rosé consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot. This yields a complexity uncommon in most pinks. “It’s a bit darker and heavier than the standard Provence rosé. I like to think of it as a red wine drinker’s rosé.”

PAGE SPRINGS CELLARS VINO DE LA FAMILIA AND MULE’S MISTAKE One of the first and most visible advocates of Arizona wines, owner and winemaker Eric Glomski churns out a library of wines that range from classic to experimental. McCreery talks about Glomski experimenting with Arizona oak barrels to age a few of his select wines, for example.

Two wines McCreery recommends are the Vino de la Familia and Mule’s Mistake, both red blends that use a cornucopia of varieties. The result is wines that are very approachable and drinkable. The Mule’s Mistake has achieved cult status and is a perennial favorite. Fans know this is one red wine that can be served a little chilled. “The Mule’s Mistake is made with a lot of grapes that grow in the Mediterranean. And grapes that work well in the Mediterranean work well here in Arizona,” he says.

CALLAGHAN VINEYARDS BUENA SUERTE RED Winemaker Kent Callaghan’s family is among the pioneers of Arizona wine, with his family vineyards among the oldest in the state. This nuanced union of Cabernet, Petite Verdot, and Cab Franc is big and bold, and a smoky finish makes it a perfect partner to a juicy steak.

1912 HERITAGE RED BLEND AND WHITE BLEND McCreery collaborated with winemaker John McLoughlin for these two wines. The White blend flaunts a refreshing combination of Chardonnay, Semillon, and Riesling, while its Red counterpart is an elegant blend of Zinfandel, Petite Verdot, and Barbera.

VINO STACHE WINERY GRACIANO This is Denise’s favorite wine of the moment. McCreery describes winemaker/owner Brooke Lowry Ide as a one-woman army who does it all at her Elgin winery. A grape that is native to Spain, it is yet another example of how a Mediterranean variety shows its best stuff in the desert. “Denise loves the incredible flavors. It’s not the biggest wine, but full-flavored and very drinkable,” he says. DVineGourmet.com

Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
