From the beginning, she told us what to expect on both sides of the (buying/selling side of) transaction. She was 100% accurate on everything she said. We sold in one day. You can not get any better than a one day sale. Not only that, it was a record for the neighborhood. On the buying end, she found us a house and within the week it was ours. If you want action, add Cathy Carter to your team. If you want long waits and a low sales price, look elsewhere. Cathy gets my highest rating. - Allan L.

LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome to February...
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Joyce Selk | joyce.selk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
It’s the night we’re going to press on this issue and I’m sitting at my computer, staring at a blank page, and thinking about what I should write about for this February Editor’s Note. As I’m brainstorming ideas, I’m enjoying spoonfuls of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. I haven’t eaten it in years, but it caught my eye while grocery shopping earlier today. I realized that it was a little ironic. Those who knew me way back during my college days would know that Cherry Garcia was my go-to during girlfriend get-togethers when any of us would have dating issues and feel sad. Now, I’m sitting here at my home computer, my husband in the other room, and my kids laughing in the background. My dog is at my feet (ok, scrounging for any food she thinks I may have dropped, but I’ll take it!), and I’m working doing a job that I dreamed about—running a magazine—as I was earning my journalism degree back then. I’m surrounded by love and happiness everywhere. How lucky am I? I hope that this “month of love” is like that for you, too—whether it’s family, friends, work, hobbies, or anything else that makes you happy. Speaking of love, February marks our "Local Love" issue. In our story, "Local Places to Love," we take you through some of the great spots around the city. Looking for unique date night ideas? We have those, too. We also feature several local people who are impacting others—Kris Patmos and Kimberly Akers with Amada Senior Care, and Martin Chuck with Tour Striker Golf Academy. As for our cover story, if you're ready for a getaway, check out Puerto Vallarta and these amazing hotels. Ahh... what's not to love? I hope this month brings you happiness and surrounds you with love. Happy Galentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and an all-around great February.

KRIS PATMOS AND KIMBERLY AKERS HELP SENIORS THROUGH AMADA SENIOR CARE
LINDSAY BORG
18
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
"Who's going to take care of dad after surgery when I can't be there?" "How does long-term care insurance work?" "What are our options for help?" "How can we keep fun alive in mom's life?" As the daughters of aging parents, Kris Patmos and Kimberly Akers know how overwhelming taking care of an aging parent can be. They also understand the desire to keep joy alive for aging parents as they transition through different, often uncomfortable phases. After realizing there was far more help available than what's discussed in routine conversation, Patmos and Akers decided to join forces and open Amada Senior Care, serving the East Valley. Friends for over 20 years, Patmos and Akers believe that an increase in age doesn't have to mean a decrease in quality of life—especially with the help of caregivers. "Aging is a beautiful thing, but in our society, we often view it terribly, writing off our seniors instead of helping them live life to their version of the fullest," Patmos says. The pair’s mission is to “enrich lives," a phrase proudly displayed throughout their office, as well as found in the spirit of their entire team. "We believe in enriching the lives of our clients by delivering more possibilities for our aging clients. It's about recognizing what they need, what they would like to be able to do, what's physically possible for them at the moment, and coming up with solutions that keep them safe while simultaneously helping them get more joy out of life."
Amada Senior Care caregivers assist with bathing, dressing, toileting, walking assistance, errands and shopping, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, and most non-medical assistance. An entire team of people supports the families who choose Amada Senior Care. Every family has access to their dedicated scheduler to help coordinate when care is needed, a Care Coordinator to answer any questions, on-call staff for questions that don't come during office hours, long-term care insurance experts who help navigate funding options, and caregivers who love what they do. "When I finally brought in outside help to support me in taking care of my parents, I got to be a daughter again. That was the best gift. To just enjoy time with my parents as their daughter again and not as the primary caregiver. That's probably my favorite thing to see for the families we work with—the gift of being able to be present with their parents again as a son or daughter," says Akers. Besides offering solutions for parents to stay safely at home, Amada Senior Care is a Long-Term Care Insurance advocate. Patmos and Akers are passionate about being a resource in the community for people who need help navigating senior care but may not be sure where to start. Amada offers no-cost Care Consultations with Senior Care Advisors that discuss care solutions, options to pay for care, home safety assessments, and private Long-Term Care Insurance analysis. For more, visit AmadaSeniorCare. com or call 480.999.5250.

LOCAL PLACES TO LOVE ARTICLE BY GERI KOEPPEL
From art to nightlife and parks to shopping, Chandler is rich with a diverse assortment of places to play. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but a few of our favorites we’d love for you to discover—if you haven’t already
AJ’s Fine Foods Patio
AJ’s is well-known as the area’s go-to gourmet grocer, but did you know it has a bistro as well with a buzzy al fresco dining scene? It’s open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday and dinner Sunday, serving up grilled burgers, hot dogs, and the like, as well as daily specials—check the website for hours and menus. Options include Taco Tuesday, Madeto-Order Pasta Night on Thursdays, and elevated items such as Marinated Grilled Entrecôte Ribeye with red wine sauce or Grilled Lemongrass Salmon with basil aioli. They also offer breakfast, sandwiches, and wraps. AJsFineFoods.com
Aji Spa
Pima and Maricopa tribal elders have ensured that the Native-owned Aji Spa is culturally respectful and authentic, boasting soothing architecture, rejuvenating treatments, and peaceful areas indoors and out. Relaxing by the pool and taking in the bucolic views after a massage while sipping on sparkling wine and nibbling a salad here is one of the most luxurious experiences you can have in Chandler and in the state—the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass is the only resort in Arizona with a five-star rating from Forbes Travel Guide for both a spa and restaurant (Kai), and Aji is the only Native American-owned spa with the honor. Arizona Railway Museum
You don’t have to be as crazy about trains as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory to enjoy this nonprofit-run collection of restored railway cars in Tumbleweed Park. It’s free to look at the cars, and from fall to spring, you can pay a small fee to go inside 12 cars (four new ones were recently added). A display building with smaller artifacts and a gift shop round out the experience. The next Arizona Railway Day open house is Feb. 26; visit the website for details. AZRYMuseum.org
Eddie Basha Collection
Housed in the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery, this is one of the largest private collections of contemporary Western American and American Indian art in the world. Late supermarket founder Eddie Basha was passionate about art and amassed more than 3,500 pieces in a variety of mediums, including stunning jewelry, atmospheric paintings, breathtaking pottery, provocative sculptures, and more. Admission is free; it’s usually open 9 a.m.–4 p.m. weekdays, but call before going to ensure it’s open. EddieBashaCollection.com

Chandler has one of the most vibrant nightlife districts in the Valley for drinks, live music, and comedy. Sweetie’s Candy of Arizona
With 13,000 square feet of treats, if you can’t find a candy at Sweetie’s, it probably doesn’t exist anymore. Family-owned for more than 60 years, this place is a playground for anyone who has or has ever had a sweet tooth. Candy buttons, Moon Pies, and wax lips are some of the nostalgic finds; there’s also bulk, sugar-free, and Mexican candy, along with sodas and toys. SweetiesCandyAZ.com

Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. Photo by Bronwyn Knight
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is an easy destination for the Phoenix traveler. After a short 2.5-hour non-stop flight from Phoenix, you will have arrived in a delightful tropical paradise. This city is smaller than some of the other popular destinations in Mexico, and you will soon feel the embrace of the local culture. We were treated like welcome guests everywhere we went, and the bonus was we always felt very safe—even in the evening walking through town or back to the resort after dinner. Just minutes from the airport, downtown area, marina, and many golf courses, we enjoyed two resorts—The Westin Resort & Spa, Puerto Vallarta and the Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. Each was unique and both are stunning properties. Our visit was during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a traditional Mexican holiday, celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2, which signifies prayer and remembrance of friends and family who have passed. There is nothing morbid about it—it is believed the departed are rejoining the living for a visit during this celebration of parades, food, and lots of fun. It truly is the perfect time for a family vacation! Directly across from the Puerto Vallarta Marina, our first stay was at the Marriott, and it didn’t take long to realize we were in for a treat as this resort celebrates the festival with its own party for guests to learn the traditions and history behind the holiday. The first day was spent on the property. As Arizonans, one of the first things on our agenda was to curl our toes into the sand of the beach and dip our feet into the water. The beach was devoid of rocks, the sand was soft, and the waves lapped gently on the shore. Perfection. The entire resort is newly remodeled and every detail has been addressed. The infinity pool is massive and seems to spill right over to the beach. Its large center island, swim-up pool bar, and adjoining outdoor dining areas were a perfect way to spend the day. With six restaurants on property and room service 24 hours a day, there is no reason to be hungry. The second day was spent immersing ourselves in the holiday by visiting the oldest cemetary in town, which was located on top of a hill in the CONTINUED >

Puerto Vallarta is a melting pot of diverse cultures, and they are all on display at the many local farmers markets, which are generally held during the winter months.
center of town. Families were gathered for picnics at gravesites with colorful headstones, there was music playing, and candles and flowers were everywhere—especially the traditional orange marigolds. Our next stop was the Malecón Boardwalk, with a seawall that runs alongside the ocean and features a variety of shops, dining, and vendors. For the festival, it was filled with altars, shrines, Catrinas (Grand Dame of Day of the Dead, who represents that no matter your social status or wealth, we all end up dead!), parades, floats, mariachis, folkloric ballerinas, and more. It is a party and cannot be missed! Back at the resort that evening, guests enjoyed the pool terrace decorated with holiday lights, altars built by the staff, and live entertainment and music, followed by a traditional Mexican feast. Another bonus with this resort is its commitment to the world’s Olive Ridley sea turtle population. The hotel has its

own biologist overseeing all volunteer activities for guests of all ages to participate in the nightly release of the recent hatchlings back into the sea. Hatching season runs from June – December. The Westin was our second stop. The resort is situated on 14 acres of a former palm tree plantation and over 600 palms remain on the property. Several sprout up on mini palm tree islands in the middle of the massive pools, and many frame the over 400 feet of private, white sand beach. The above-and-beyond service at the resort began the moment we arrived, and continued throughout our stay. The grounds are lush, and you soon realize the commitment to health and wellness as we passed the spa; gym; tennis courts; kayak rental area; beach club with pergolas complete with chaise lounge and privacy curtains; meeting spaces; and the long, winding pools, which were simply amazing. Complete with built-in loungers, a swim-up
bar and poolside service, they are easily your first or final destination for the day. There are three on-site restaurants for dining, with plenty of options for freshly caught seafood and healthy cuisine. Puerto Vallarta is a melting pot of diverse cultures, and they are all on display at the many local farmers markets, which are generally held during the winter months. You can find one almost every day of the week, but we visited the one held on Thursday nights at Marina Vallarta, right by the statue of the giant whale. With over 250 vendors, it was a perfect time to support the local economy and ogle all the beautiful big boats while listening to live music and enjoying the street entertainment. On our second evening, we were treated to a sunset picnic on the beach, set up with cozy cushions to sit on and expertly prepared food and drinks served to us as we watched the sun dip below the horizon while stunning colors of the sunset were streaked across the sky and reflected on the water. Breathtaking!

GAME ON CHANDLER'S MARTIN CHUCK VOTED THE 26TH BEST GOLF TEACHER IN THE NATION BY GOLF DIGEST
42
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
YOU WERE JUST NAMED THE 26TH BEST GOLF TEACHER IN THE NATION BY GOLF DIGEST. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS YOU APART? I started teaching when I was 16 years old. I’m 53 years old now, so I’ve been at this a long time. The constant thing I’m told from the students who take lessons from me is that I can express complex things in understandable pieces. HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU BEGAN PLAYING GOLF? I started having fun with the game when I was 7 years old. I entered my first junior tournament when I was 11 years old. I was hooked at an early age.
WHAT STILL DRAWS YOU TO THE GAME? You always feel like you can improve on elements of the game. You never own this game. You may rent it from time to time! The feeling of a pure golf shot is my drug. YOU OWN TOUR STRIKER GOLF ACADEMY WITH YOUR WIFE, STACEY. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN THE GOLF SCHOOL? My wife! I was the manager of the golf operation at a few nice places over the years. Stacey was the one who said, quit all those other responsibilities and focus on what you love. More great advice from my wife. It is certainly what I was meant to do. BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE INTERESTED IN GOLF? It’s really important to learn some of the basics correctly. A lot of people dabble in the game and start with bad habits that are hard to overcome down the road. That’s when you need me! Find an instructor who you connect well with and who cares about you and your game. Take pride in doing the basics like grip, posture, stance, and alignment well, and that will be a foundation you can count on the rest of your golfing days. Once you do that, get out and enjoy the game. You’ll find your swing feels and stick with them. WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE LOOK FOR IN A GOLF INSTRUCTOR? A serious interest in you! Teaching golf requires patience. It’s a really hard, yet rewarding game.
MARTIN CHUCK
YOU INVENTED TOUR STRIKER TRAINING PRODUCTS—CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT? As I stated, I’ve coached for a long time. If I can create a shortcut for the student to understand the correct motion, I introduce a prop, or aid to help accelerate understanding. Well, over the years, I’ve developed a handful of products that have proven very helpful to golfer development. I am really humbled and honored that many of the world's best golfers playing at the highest levels trust my products with their game. FAVORITE COURSE YOU’VE PLAYED? The National Golf Club of Canada, in my hometown of Toronto.

FAVORITE COURSE IN THE VALLEY? I love San Marcos Golf Club. It’s old and has wonderful shade trees and it isn’t perfect. I’ve played a ton of fancy, over-manicured golf courses in my life, and there is a charm to an older course with small greens and less-than-perfect conditions. It’s a course for everyone.

YOU GREW UP IN TORONTO—WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO CHANDLER? I’ve lived in the United States for most of my adult life. I went to college at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. After that, I lived in Florida, Texas, California, Nevada, Oregon, and finally settled in Chandler. I chased a little white golf ball a lot of places, and finally found a wonderful home in Arizona. ANY FAVORITE PLACES AROUND CHANDLER? My wife and I love Downtown Chandler. I’m a fan of DC Steak House. Funny story—I was in Northern Ireland at Royal Portrush doing a golf school. Rory McIlroy was also there entertaining winners who won an opportunity to play a round of golf with him. I happened to say hello to one of the winners and asked where they were from. Well, it happened to be Laurie and Deano, the owners of DC Steak House. I had to go all the way to Ireland to meet them when we actually live about a mile apart from each other. When they told me they owned DC Steak House, I said, “Oh my gosh, that’s one of our date night places!” WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT PLAYING GOLF? I’ve had some fun tournament moments. It’s always nice to prove to yourself that you can get things done in competition. That said, my most favorite moments were playing golf with my father when I was a kid.
