When I moved to the Valley from New York in the late 1990s, the food scene here was, well, interesting. New York was a foodie haven, with mom-and-pop locales everywhere, pizza joints on every corner, and all open almost all hours. Here, the food scene was ... different. At the time, everything seemed to close by 8 p.m., and after hunting for pizza, I finally came across one locale with a sign in its window that boasted, “We sell by the slice!” because just about no one else did yet in the Valley. True story. Fast-forward to today. James Beard Award winners? We’ve got them. Celebrity chefs? We’ve got them. Mom-and-pop locales? We’ve got them. A variety of cuisines? Yep, we’ve got those, too. In fact, when people ask me about my favorite restaurant in the Valley, I always pause. How is it possible to pick when there are so many amazing locales now? The Valley has truly evolved to be a culinary destination that’s known nationally, if not even internationally. As you can tell, this issue is our Food & Drink Issue. It’s one of my favorites each year! In addition to our food spread, we showcase tailgating fun, a new musical, spoke to Niels Kreipke about developing Downtown Chandler (and his involvement with some of its newest restaurants), share how to get a more restful night’s sleep, and more. Liam Bowersox, 10, is headed to Woodward, Pennsylvania this month to compete in the USA BMX Freestyle National Finals Competition. He began riding BMX when he was just 2, racing strider bikes, and switched over to Freestyle when he was about 8 1/2. Did you know holistic orthodontics brings better sleep? People of all ages can get a little fussy when they haven’t had enough quality sleep—and this can be especially true when it happens all the time. Chronic lack of sleep/poor sleep/lack of oxygen can lead to numerous issues, including diminished cognitive function, daytime fatigue, weight gain, lack of focus, irritability, reduced function of all body systems, and ultimately early death. Let me share a story about a patient—I will call her Jane. Growing up, Jane’s parents could not afford great dental care. This was something she vowed to change for her family. She was a busy working mom with three kids. We had successfully treated Jane’s kids, and Jane decided it would finally be her turn to receive orthodontic treatment. She had always wanted straighter teeth, and she had a “snaggletooth,” as she called it, that really bothered her. Jane had subconsciously taught herself to smile in such a way as to try and hide that tooth with her lip. When Jane came in for her treatment, she admitted that she always felt tired and run down. She confided in us that she had trouble sleeping at night and never felt fully rested when she woke up in the morning. She would fall asleep and suddenly wake herself up from her own snoring. She felt so embarrassed. To make matters worse, she would also clench her jaw tightly and grind her teeth. Her jaw would be really sore in the morning, like she had been in some kind of nighttime boxing match. Recently, Jane spent a bunch of money to purchase a new mattress, but her expensive sleep number wasn’t working the way she had envisioned. Jane supposed it was simply because of her job and her kids, and that this was just how life was supposed to feel. All of that changed halfway through her orthodontic treatment. Jane looked healthy and happy. She was a different

person and all her family, friends, and co-workers noticed. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, her skin was radiant, and she was sharp and full of 10 times as much energy as she had before. She told us her husband had mentioned that she didn’t snore anymore. She couldn’t believe that her crowded teeth had been the culprit of her declining health. Jane was sleeping and breathing better than she had ever before. When most people think of orthodontics, they think of beautiful smiles. What many don’t know is that orthodontists go through extensive training on the growth and development of the jawbones and skull. The position of your jawbones relative to your skull defines your airway. Jawbones that are too small or that do not develop in the correct position result in deficient airways that can negatively affect your breathing. Human skulls have been studied over time, and it has been noted that jawbones, particularly in developed countries, are not developing as large as they did in our ancestors. There are many hypotheses of why this may be—diet being one of the most speculated. As a result, orthodontics is needed more in growth and development, not only to create space for permanent teeth to erupt into, but ultimately so that adequate airways are created, and sleep and breathing disorders are minimized. Orthodontics can be used alone or in conjunction with other modalities to correct breathing/sleep disorders, and can really change not only the appearance of your smile but also your systemic health. Patients who have had chronic sleeping issues, including sleep apnea, are often surprised to discover that they are able to sleep so much better because of their orthodontic treatment. They feel incredibly healthier and more energized. Orthodontics doesn’t just improve your smile and confidence, it literally lights up your whole way of being.

Since its beginning, Downtown Chandler has continuously evolved. In recent years, it’s been a delicate balance between respecting the past and making room for the present. “Chandler was founded in 1912. Chandler now has almost 280,000 residents, according to Census data. Through all that time, the historic downtown area has seen tremendous growth and many different tenants. Despite all these changes, one thing has remained the same: the homage to its roots,” says Niels Kreipke, owner and founder of Desert Viking Development and Construction. “Historic buildings, like the Hotel San Marcos, have been honored and preserved. Therefore, as Chandler continues to grow, it is important to not only focus on development, but also preserving the city.”

DEDICATED TO LOCAL DEVELOPMENT Kreipke founded Desert Viking Development and Construction in 1997, and since then, he explains that he has been a part of the effort to redevelop Downtown Chandler into the vibrant entertainment and restaurant district it is today. “As a developer in the city, I want to foster continued growth, while keeping the notes of history intact. I want to stay focused on local mom-andpop-style businesses,” Kreipke explains. “It is a passion for me to help incubate small businesses and to see them succeed. The property owners in the downtown area have stayed true to keeping the concepts local—which is helping make downtown Chandler a true destination.” “I have owned numerous properties in the area, as well as helped other owners restore their properties,” he adds. His ownership of historic properties over the years has included: • The Monroe Building: A.J. Chandler’s original office and Chandler’s first sound movie theater. It is now Recreo and 26 Gorillas’ office. • Suhwaro Hotel: Now Eastwind Sushi & Grill and Commit Agency. • The Old Post Office Building: Now Craft 64 pizzeria and Burns Law Office. • The Thomas Building: Now Pie Snob, Lifeline Barbershop, and other local businesses. • The Meat Locker Building: Now Motivated Mind Group. • The Sprouse-Reitz Building: Now Tipsy Egg and The Uncommon. • The Bank of Chandler Building: Now SanTan Brewery. • The Rowena Theater: Chandler’s first silent movie theater, it is now being renovated into a steakhouse. • Hotel Chandler: Now BlackSheep Wine Bar & Merchant. In addition to historical properties, Desert Viking has developed ground-up commercial and residential sites across the Valley. “These projects have ranged from small commercial additions and new builds to the construction of single-family homes and small subdivisions,” according to the company. Recently, Desert Viking completed an urban infill 79-unit townhome development in Downtown Chandler known as San Marcos Commons. “I’m [also] looking to expand efforts to the southern portion of Downtown Chandler along Arizona Avenue from Fry to Pecos,” Kreipke adds about other local projects that are in the works. “Recently, I purchased a former carniceria market and I am looking for more opportunities.” These local projects are in addition to multiple other developments that Kreipke and his team have in the works across the Valley and the state. When it comes to the Chandler community, Kreipke invests his time, in addition to his talent. “Giving back to the community is a priority,” he shares. “I have served as chairman of Chandler’s Architectural Review Committee, been president of the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, and am a board member of the Arizona Preservation Foundation.” He was also instrumental in getting the new Boys & Girls Clubs and ICAN facilities in Chandler. A TASTE OF TODAY AND THE FUTURE As many locals have noticed, Downtown Chandler has become a hot spot for delicious eateries. Kreipke and his team have been a part of this, bringing Tipsy Egg, The Uncommon, and Recreo to the area within the past few months. “With the new restaurants popping up like Tipsy Egg, The Uncommon, and Recreo, Downtown Chandler is entering a new generation,” Kreipke says. “It [Downtown Chandler] is now a place where the sidewalks are alive at night, with a ton of entertainment options for visitors. I see Downtown Chandler continuing to move in this direction, making it the ever-growing Valley nightlife hot spot.”

Custom Kitchens Designer Dena Thomas Shares Some of Her Favorite Kitchen Designs

The kitchen is often the hub of the household. It’s where we eat meals, work, prepare for gatherings, and have some of our best moments with family and friends. Modern and Timeless

Before her expert design, this kitchen featured an overwhelming amount of wood and felt cramped. Thomas’ redesign included not only getting rid of the dark wood and replacing it with inviting white and lighter tones, but an entire change of footprint. Now there’s more functional space, including a pantry with plenty of pull-outs and a coffee bar. Before her redesign, this farmhouse-inspired kitchen was all dark brown and lacked a lot of personal touches. For its updated look, Thomas lightened the tones with white cabinets and a toffee brown island with an “x” on the side—representing a true farmhouse kitchen—with a white countertop. She also added new lighting fixtures and fun, farmhouse-style chairs. The floor changed from dark brown tile to a soft brown luxury vinyl plank and a rustic subway tile backsplash completed the look. “This client wanted a farmhouse look, so we did that, but with a modern twist,” Thomas says. “Now this kitchen is a farmhouse style, which is a popular trend right now, but will stand the test of time.”

Modern Eclectic

For fans of cool, colorful designs, this modern eclectic kitchen is for you. Mixing a variety of colors and patterns that are bold but still flow well together, this kitchen is home to fun and funky light fixtures, modern chairs, quartzite countertops, and a glass table, and flows well into the colorful living space next to it. “This kitchen features high-end finishes, high-gloss cabinets, and a waterfall island,” Thomas describes. “It has a lot of marble, a lot of color, brass accents—including a brass sink—and fun backsplashes.”

Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

Fans of live theater and musicals should mark their calendars for Nov. 4 and 5—that is when the new musical NORTH will be performed at Chandler Center for the Arts. The theatrical production tells the story of a young teenager named Lawrence, his mother Minnie, and their journey on the Underground Railroad. It is the first musical theater piece from composer, musician, and vocalist Ashli St. Armant. “I began writing this piece because I realized how much is missing in our history books and literature about the real-life experiences of Black folks during the 18th and 19th centuries,” St. Armant says, adding that she also used her own experiences as a mother of Black teenage sons to write the story of Lawrence and Minnie. St. Armant’s own ancestors were enslaved in Vacherie, Louisiana; she notes that her research for this project, which is set in the 1850s, led her down many paths where she discovered incredible connections to her own family and experiences. Many of those findings influenced the final story, including characters like Tham The Brave, a real-life leader in a Maroons community who had been enslaved on the same plantation as St. Armant’s family members in the 1780s. In addition, the set design and the song “Oh What These Trees Have Seen” come from her personal experience visiting the area where that plantation was located. “NORTH is a musical to entertain and discover the depth and personalities of these characters, and we hope people will learn more about the Underground Railroad along the way,” St. Armant says.
