And at the age of 16, the BASIS Chandler charter school senior is a veteran of the arts education and nonprofit world. She has taught art classes and workshops since the age of 13, and runs EaselArts (EaselArts.com), her nonprofit organization that supports arts advocacy, organizes workshops, and donates funds to a variety of causes, including foster care, girls’ education, and nutrition in third world countries, to name a few. EaselArts raises funds through art workshops and classes for all ages. Vuddagiri drew from her experiences with the Youth Arts Council for the Chandler Center of the Arts to help shape EaselArts.

USES THE PROFITS FROM HER CHILDREN’S BOOK SERIES TO FUND HER NONPROFIT, SARGEANT’S ARMY, WHICH PROVIDES HOPE TO THE HOMELESS At 14, Ashley Nevison has a schedule that rivals that of adults putting in 60-hour work weeks. While gearing up for her freshman year at ASU Preparatory Digital online high school, she’s a scholarship pageant competitor, and was crowned Royal International Miss Arizona Preteen 2020. She dances with the Russian Ballet Academy, and will start training next year at the Yen-Li Chen Ballet School. And, there’s her One World One Future podcast that focuses on volunteers making an impact in their communities. This is an area Nevison knows well.

On May 12, Jackson traveled to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training site at the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama. Similar to last year’s NBA playoffs, paralympic athletes operated in a “bubble” under strict health and safety protocols. Tryouts and twice-a-day training for three hours each day ran from May 14-22. Arizona is well represented on the 12-man squad, with three veteran players from Tucson affiliated with the University of Arizona wheelchair rugby program joining Jackson in Tokyo.

The Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation’s Live Remote VEX Robotics World Championship 2021 was recognized as the Largest Online Robot Championships record holder by Guinness World Records. During the live remote event, over 1,600 teams from 30 countries and 49 U.S. states competed in timed robotics competition matches with their custom-built robots. Chandler-based team Overdrive 1696Z won the competition’s middle school division and the excellence award for the science division. Led by Pranil Kanderi, CTO and co-founder of Lotus Labs, the winning team consists of Aari and Sidharth Kanderi from Arizona College Prep, and Karan and Rohan Vallamshetla from Basha Accelerated Middle School. The students created the team and connected outside of their schools to practice. “To have a successful team that can do well in competitions, you need to spend a lot of your free time practicing driving and

building the robot,” Aari shares. “It can be a bit of a challenge to manage your school and robotics, but it is definitely worth it.” “One lesson that I hope [other] students take away from our story is that if you work hard and are determined, you can do anything,” Karan adds. “Take us for example; we were an underdog team who only hoped of being top 25 in the world, but we worked hard to be our very best, and we were able to win the whole thing.” Coach Kanderi shares that students learn a variety of useful skills from competing. “Students will learn to work and perform under high-pressure situations,” he says. “They try to accomplish their goal within one minute [time allotted for each match in VEX IQ] without making any mistakes and with the added pressure of a live competition. As you go out to more of these competitions and repeat this, it becomes a sort of muscle memory, and they start to perform better… They also learned leadership, communication, and collaboration when working with

gear ratios, etc., in robotics is just a cherry on the top.” This fall, Sidharth and Rohan will be moving on to high school and a different team. Aari and Karan will continue to be a part of Overdrive 1696Z, possibly with some new members. RoboticsEducation.org/new-to-robotics

FOR MANY, THE CONCEPT OF EXPLORING WIDE OPEN SPACES AND SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS WHILE CAMPING IS AN ALLURING ONE. However, the mere thought of neither running water nor indoor plumbing for an extended period of time is not. Enter glamping. For those unfamiliar, glamping is a means to experience the great outdoors without giving up one’s creature comforts. In fact, many places that offer glamping have more luxuries that one might very well find at home. Here are some favorites.

Each animal has a very special story, to say the least. There are Craigslist recoveries like Gabby and Gibby, two goats who were excess from the dairy industry. The four-legged duo happened to be the first residents to dig their hooves into the sanctuary’s soil. There are extreme cases like Mr. McFluffers and his chicken friends, found in the middle of the desert by a couple who stopped for a drink of water while riding ATVs. They left the tiny flock food and water, contacted Goats with Horns, and offered to bring the chickens back if Lukasiewicz would take them in. She agreed, not knowing what type of medical attention they would require, but was ready to take on the challenge. “Mr. McFluffers later had what’s called bumblefoot, which is basically a bad infection that can be fatal if left untreated because it can spread to tissues and bones,” Lukasiewicz says. “We had to spend an extensive amount of money to get surgery to remove it.” CONTINUED >

The Widsom About Wisdom Teeth WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW

HAVING YOUR WISDOM TEETH REMOVED—IT’S SO COMMON IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE A DENTAL RITE OF PASSAGE. In fact, according to recent statistics, five million people a year in the U.S. have their wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth are the four permanent adult teeth located in the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. Our mouths have room for 28 teeth, but with wisdom teeth included there are 32. Many of us can remember having this procedure done in our teens or early 20s—but why is that the most common time? Dr. Nish Shah, DMD, MD, FACS, of Arizona Oral Facial and Implant Surgery, is a board-certified oral surgeon. “There is no ideal age for wisdom tooth removal because everyone matures at a different rate,” he says. “But the average age is in the mid-teenage years, 14 to 18, before the roots have fully developed or the teeth have shifted.” “In general, everybody needs to have their wisdom teeth removed,” Dr. Shah continues. “Our diets have changed over the last couple hundred years to a very refined diet and we just do not create enough space for the wisdom teeth to
