A fluttering heart is romantic, but could it be something else? Those odd sensations, a fluttering feeling in your chest, erratic heartbeats? The fact is, irregular or abnormal heartbeats, known as arrhythmia, aren’t normal at all, and they definitely aren’t to be ignored. It could be atrial fibrillation or other heart rhythm disorders—conditions that may cause the electrical impulses of the heart to happen too fast, too slowly, or erratically, when left undiagnosed and untreated. The first step in protecting yourself is a heart health checkup with one of our heart rhythm experts at the Dignity Health Heart Arrhythmia Center – Chandler Regional Medical Center. Now’s the time to schedule a consultation with our experts. Call 480-728-5500 or visit LearnAboutArrhythmia.org.

Ma k i n g T ha n ksg iv i n g Tast y Wit h t he Per fect T u rkey a nd Side Dish ARTICLE ALISON STANTON ON NOV. 25, MANY HOUSEHOLDS ACROSS AMERICA WILL BE CELEBRATING THANKSGIVING—WHICH FOR MANY MEANS SERVING A TURKEY. Whether it’s your first time cooking a turkey or you’re a pro, we checked in with Executive Chef Fabrice Buschtetz, who owns four restaurants along with his wife, Máiréad—including Cuisine & Wine Bistro in Chandler (CuisineAndWineBistro.com)—and who offered some tips for cooking one perfectly. “A fresh turkey is always best; if you can order directly from a farm, it is even better,” Chef Buschtetz recommends, adding that a frozen bird is also fine—just try to find an organic one with no antibiotics or GMOs. As for the size, Buschtetz says it depends on how many people will be at the meal. “That being said, I do not recommend huge birds. Always keep in mind that a turkey does not grow naturally to a humungous size.” Buschtetz prefers a dry brine for a turkey—something simple like salt, pepper, thyme, and butter. “The simpler the seasoning, the more natural flavor of the turkey you will preserve,” he explains. As for stuffing, Buschtetz likes to fill his turkey with a mix of bread, butter, onion, lemon, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, and salt and pepper. He also cooks a dressing with a sausage base in a separate pan. “The one cooked inside will be moist and flavorful due to the meat juices,” he says. Before putting the turkey in the oven, Buschtetz recommends letting it rest for 30-60 minutes at room temperature. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of the turkey, but in most cases it should take between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 hours, and should reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Once it’s out of the oven, let the turkey rest a minimum of 30 minutes before carving. 28

IN 2007, WEE BLESSINGS PRESCHOOL & ACADEMY OPENED ITS DOORS AT QUEEN CREEK AND COOPER ROADS IN CHANDLER. The faith-based preschool quickly gained popularity with local families for its high standards, low ratios, and credentialed teachers—including Mariza Martinez-Gay, the school’s beloved Spanish teacher, who sadly passed away at age 46 in 2014. LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)
Not long after opening, Martinez-Gay suggested starting a Spanish program. “The kids loved it,” Larkin-Chavez says. “Mariza made it fun. She was amazing and brought the very best out of each and every student.” Sadly, Martinez-Gay was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in 2013. The illness forced her to quit teaching mid-year. But, her passion and love for her students ran so deep that she made sure to visit her classes whenever she could, and even took the time to pick her own replacement at the school—someone who would carry on her legacy as the preschool’s Spanish teacher. Before her passing, Martinez-Gay and her husband Leonard asked Larkin-Chavez and her husband (and co-owner) Phil if they could start a nonprofit organization to help Wee Blessings with a scholarship fund for families who have fallen on hard times. About a month before she passed, the group got together and laid out the groundwork for the Mariza Gay Foundation. Now parents can donate to the foundation, which goes directly to the school and allows students to continue on with their education even if the child’s family finds themselves unable to pay the tuition for any reason. “She didn’t want any child to miss out on a quality education at Wee Blessings due to finances,” says Larkin-Chavez. There are no criteria for families to receive the support if they need it. “We’re usually able to quickly identify if a family has fallen on hard times,” says Larkin-Chavez. “If we see that we’ll ask if they need/want the assistance, and we step in.”

Chandler Lifestyle | November 2021
According to Larkin-Chavez, the foundation funds have supported close to 75 children since it was founded. “We just don’t want to lose children because of money,” she says. “We’ve also had families tour our school with interest but [then be] unable to pay the tuition, and in those cases we can work with them.” So far most of the support the foundation has received has come directly from Larkin-Chavez and her husband, but any and all financial support is welcomed and is a tax write-off. “Mariza was such an incredible person, and we want to make her proud,” says Larkin-Chavez. “I really miss my friend.” To learn more about Wee Blessings Preschool & Academy and to donate to the Mariza Gay foundation, visit WBPre.com.

Since his time on The Bachelor, Ben has taken the opportunity to use his fame to create not one, but two inspiring podcasts, publish a successful autobiography, while also elevating awareness of his “for-purpose” Generous Coffee brand. We asked ourselves how we can make this more sustainable, and we came up with the idea that we could start a for-profit business and call ourselves “for-purpose.” We donate 100% of our profits to non-profits.

POSITIVE I NTE R AC TI O N S .
Well-intentioned family members often want their loved one to understand the reality of their diagnosis. Unfortunately, that may not be accomplished due to neurological interactions in the brain. One way to positively interact is if a loved one believes the sky is purple, then talk about the beauty of the purple sky. This is not harmful to the individual or putting that individual at a safety risk.

NARROW CHOICES.
One of the strategies Amada Senior Care aides use is narrowing choices. For example, instead of asking, “What do you want for breakfast?” it is better to ask, “This morning would you like scrambled eggs or pancakes?” Providing choices still provides independence, but also helps the loved one to emotionally feel safe because much of the problem-solving abilities are not working as they have in the past.
