I don’t know about you, but for me, this year seems to have lasted 10 years in one— and yet, it has also gone by extremely quickly. Each day seems quite long with the juggle of work, kids, and life, mostly all from home. And yet, how is it near the end of the year already?

I feel like we went from March to November in the blink of an eye. As we enter this season of thankfulness, I have been taking time to reflect on the many things I’m grateful for… health, family, friends, my career—and you. Thank you for sharing your stories with us, for reading our magazine through these unique times, for being there for us, and for letting us be there for you. In this issue we share inspiring stories of people who are doing amazing things, such as how ICAN has been keeping kids—and families—engaged with its to-go Kraft Kits, how a local couple is giving back, and how a doctor is helping give the gift

HONORING OUR LOCAL HEROES CHANDLER VETERANS: PATH OF HONOR WELCOMES RESIDENTS

ARTICLE MICHELLE TALSMA EVERSON | PHOTOGRAPHY AND VETERAN INFORMATION COURTESY OF THE CITY OF CHANDLER AND CHANDLER MUSEUM

WHEN YOU ASK A VETERAN OR THEIR FAMILY ABOUT THEIR SERVICE, THEY OFTEN PAINT A PICTURE OF EXPERIENCES AND SACRIFICES THAT MANY CIVILIANS CAN ONLY IMAGINE. This month, the City of Chandler will host its first-ever Chandler Veterans: Path of Honor. Throughout November, locals can visit Chandler Veterans Oasis Park and take a stroll along the Path of Honor, which will recognize 20 Chandler veterans along the way. “Visitors will see the veterans’ photos, and learn a few facts about them and their military service, while giving them the opportunity to reflect on their service to our country,” says Chandler Museum Collections Coordinator Nate Meyers. To make this project possible, the Chandler Museum is working on a Chandler Veterans Database. To submit digital photos to the database, visit ChandlerAZ.gov/veteransdatabase. To donate original photographs, scrapbooks, uniforms, or other items that help document a veteran’s story, contact Meyers at 480.782.2877.

As Shelby Pedersen, CEO of ICAN notes, the team quickly came up with an innovative idea to remain connected to the area’s youth: ICAN Kraft Kits.

The first Me & My Family Kit, which was distributed in September, was a group art project for the family. Pedersen says it included a blank canvas, paint, tape, brushes, and instructions. "Families divided the canvas into quadrants with the

CITY SCENE (CONTINUED) All of the monthly kits incorporate ICAN’s “Positive Youth Development” focus, with a strong emphasis on family bonding, communication skills, and self-confidence, Pedersen says. “Each kit is compiled with all age groups in mind, and has a little something for the teens, as well as younger children.” Pedersen is immensely proud of the team from ICAN, who produced, assembled, and distributed 4,600 kits between March and August. Now that the kits are family-focused, ICAN is distributing between 40 and 60 per month, she says. While the kits are free for ICAN families—85% of ICAN families live below the poverty line, Pedersen says—the community is welcome to support ICAN’s Me & My Family Kits by subscribing to receive them for their own family. “The cost for a kit is $50 a month. For every paid kit we sell to the community, ICAN is able to provide two free kits to families in ICAN’s service area,” Pedersen says, adding that ICAN plans to continue the Me & My Family Kits at least through Spring 2021. Pedersen says she and the team from ICAN were encouraged and delighted by the positive feedback they received. “All summer long we were receiving tremendous feedback from families with their gratitude for ICAN in providing these activities,” Pedersen says. “Families were sending in photos of their kids working on the projects, and notes of thanks. We also received many photos from the September Me & My Family Kit, it was so fun to see how all of of the art pieces came out so differently.” To subscribe to a monthly kit from ICAN, contact Becky Hinds at 480.874.7578 or becky@icanaz.org. Kits will be delivered within the Chandler area; families who live outside of Chandler should contact ICAN directly. ICANAZ.org

STEVE KEIM THE ARIZONA CARDINALS GENERAL MANAGER AND CHANDLER RESIDENT ON FULFILLING HIS DREAMS, AND WHAT HE LOVES ABOUT CHANDLER

ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

CHANDLER RESIDENT AND ARIZONA CARDINALS GENERAL MANAGER STEVE KEIM HAD A PLAN FOR HIS FUTURE FROM THE TIME HE WAS A YOUNG BOY. “I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, and in that state, football is everything—it’s king,” he says. “As a child, I was just so passionate about the game, to the point where, when I was 9 years old—I’ll never forget this—I walked up to my mom in the kitchen and I said, ‘Mom,

So, Keim took that advice to heart, got good grades, and, as anyone who follows football knows, the rest is history. He had many scholarship offers out of high school, chose North Carolina State University, played football there, and later signed with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. By age 25, he was scouting for the Arizona Cardinals. He’s now been with the organization for 22 years.

of in your blood.” For Keim, his job is a dream come true.

“I thank God every day, I truly do,” he shares. “I can’t even believe I’ve been given this opportunity, and the level of appreciation I have for what I do and the opportunity—I’m just so thankful.” As thankful as he is, Keim still shares that the job causes its share of stress. “It’s a results-based business and a challenging business, and it’s really not meant for everybody. You have to have a really thick skin,” he says. Although he can let those things roll off his back, he worries about his four children. “They’re getting to an age where they can read and see things on social media, and that’s hard,” Keim says. “But I respect the fact that everyone has opinions and is passionate about this game and what I do. At the end of the day, I just want to make them proud.” It also is a juggle between keeping the people who work for him, as well as the players, happy, while sometimes having to make decisions that are unpopular. “That’s probably the biggest thing that the fan doesn’t see behind the scenes,” he says. “It’s not just glamorous to sit here and say, ‘Well, we’re taking Kyler Murray with the first pick’ or ‘I’m going to trade for Deandre Hopkins.’ That’s just a small piece of the pie of what I do.” One thing he enjoys is showing off the Valley and Chandler. When potential draftees or free agents come to town, he takes them to restaurants such as Steak 44 or Ocean 44, or in Chandler, to Fleming’s and Pesto’s Italian. He says he also looks forward to taking them to DC Steakhouse’s new location. CONTINUED >

STEVE KEIM (CONTINUED)

Keim has lived in Chandler for nine years, and loves that it has a small-town feel, yet at the same time, continues to grow. “It’s an area I’m extremely proud to call home,” he says. “When you look at the Valley there are so many nice places to live, but to me, Chandler is, in my opinion, the best because for a person with children, it’s a great place to raise kids—the education, and the fact that it’s a little greener than other parts of the Valley. … The people that I’ve gotten to know, and the restaurants, are awesome. There are so many caring people who want to see Chandler grow and evolve, and that’s been fun to watch over the past nine years.” When he’s not working or spending time with his family, he enjoys swimming, hiking, taking walks, shopping, and traveling. Although Keim has a big job that involves tough calls and thick skin, he shares that one thing people would be surprised to know about him is that, “I’m pretty sensitive. They see a big guy and they think you have a tough exterior, when really, I’m probably a puppy dog at heart. I can get my feelings hurt easily, and I can cry at a sad movie. Those sort of things are not so macho to say.” As 2020 comes to a close and the holiday season arrives, he looks back at what the year has brought and shares that, “I think more than anything, COVID has put a lot of things into perspective. It’s having four beautiful kids who are healthy, and to be able to live out a dream for a living. I think to me, every day, I’m so thankful for this opportunity and so appreciative. I really hope that everybody in life gets to experience living out a dream like I have, because to feel the passion is second to none. You hear about people who don’t like their jobs and who hate going to work, and I feel so bad, because I want everybody to experience the joy I’ve experienced in my life.”

i n st r uc t ion s Peel potatoes. Peel onion. Grate potatoes on box grater, fine to medium grate. Grate onion on fine grate. Squeeze water out of potato and onion mixture using a dish towel twisted to tighten around grated mixture. Add beaten egg, and salt and pepper to taste. Add a spoon or two of flour to thicken mix. Heat peanut oil in large skillet. Using a tablespoon, drop a heaping spoon of mix into hot oil in frying pan, and flatten into pancakes. When latkes start getting brown around the edges, turn them over with spatula. When brown on both sides, remove and drain on paper towels. Notes: Hand grated is best, but you can use a food processor (especially for a large volume of potatoes). Also, it is important to work fast to avoid potatoes from discoloring after grated. Makes 12 to 24 latkes, depending on potato size. CityLifestyle.com/Chandler

WALKING THE WALK

A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN

IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.

“People that I’ve found that have spent their lives truly loving others are the j o y f u l p e o p l e .” 36

POWERFUL BLOW TO THE INDUSTRY. But Mark and Alexis Breyer, known as “The Husband & Wife Law Team” that drives the Breyer Law Offices, are taking that patronage to the next level with their Heart Campaign.

A SWEETHEART DEAL

Since April, the firm has subsidized 50% of

selected restaurants’ sales on a designated day. It’s an incentive for consumers, whose tabs are cut in half, and a bonus for eateries, which are generating income and exposure they may not have otherwise. Restaurants are nominated by the public. Lucky Lou’s American Grill in Chandler was among the first of about 40 participating restaurants so far. Some experienced their busiest days through this effort. “It’s been such a success, we’re going to keep this going,” says Mark, who started the firm with Alexis in 1996. Its Chandler office is one of eight across the Valley. “Everyone here on my team that’s been involved has been on the phone with general managers and owners who are in tears because of the impact it’s been able to make. And it’s not because of us. It’s really because of the community.” To nominate a restaurant, contact the firm directly via social media or the website: BreyerLaw.com/heart.
