CHANDLER RANKED AMONG TOP COMMUNITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Chandler has been ranked among the best places to live if you have a disability by WalletHub, a financial website that produces state and local rankings on a number of topics. WalletHub compared some of America’s most populated cities across 31 key indicators of disability-friendliness, including physicians per capita, park accessibility and rate of workers with disabilities. Chandler ranked 11th out of 182 cities, ahead of communities such as Minneapolis (#12), Denver (#14), San Diego (#28) and Portland (#30). “At least in part, I think this high ranking demonstrates

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR SUMMER CAMP Registration for the Girl Scouts– Arizona Cactus Pine-Council (GSACPC) 2019 summer camps is now open for its four camp locations: The Parsons Leadership Center for Girls and Women at Camp South Mountain (Phoenix), Camp Maripai (Prescott), Shadow Rim Ranch (Payson) and Willow Springs (Prescott). Each camp has its own special offerings, along with the traditional camp activities, to accommodate the diverse interests of every girl. Yet the purpose of Girl Scout camp remains the same—to provide girls a safe and supportive place to have fun, make new friends, and take risks while learning new skills and exploring the outdoors. GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST THROUGH OUR CITY’S FIRST HOMES

IF THESE HOUSES COULD TALK, THEY COULD SHARE STORIES OF CHANDLER’S AGRICULTURAL HISTORY AND HOW THEY WITNESSED THE FIELDS SHRINK AS A NEW CITY GREW ROOTS. They could also reminisce about the days when an indoor bathroom was a luxury. Here are three homes that have witnessed generations of change.

20

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2019

The McCroskey House

THE MCCROSKEY HOUSE was built in 1917 by the George Edwards family and is representative of many of the farming homes of the era, valued for their practical and inexpensive design. The home was mail-ordered and cost around $600. It arrived to its original homesite on the southwest corner of Dobson and Pecos in 30,000 pieces. When completed, the home had four bedrooms, a kitchen with no running water, and no bathroom. Later, one of the rooms was converted into a bathroom. Laura and Ralph Hoyt McCroskey moved into the house in 1933 and Laura called it home until 1987. Mona McCroskey donated the house to the City of Chandler, and it was moved to Tumbleweed Ranch, in Tumbleweed Park, located off McQueen Road, where it’s used for educational field trips. It gives students the opportunity to see what life was like 100 years ago. People are welcome to view the outside of the house daily, and it’s also open during park events. 2240 S. The Edwards House

The McCullough-Price House

22

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2019

THE EDWARDS HOUSE was built in 1913 by Will and Grace Robinson, a year after Chandler was founded. They ordered the Maples model from the Aladdin Company catalog. In 1923, the Edwards family, who built the McCroskey House, moved into the home after George Edwards passed away. The eldest daughter, Bertha, was a Chandler school teacher and lived in the home until she died in 1989. She was its last resident. The bungalow was originally located on Washington Street and was one of the first homes built in the neighborhood east of Arizona Avenue and north of Buffalo Street. It was moved to Tumbleweed Park after it was acquired by the City of Chandler in 2002. The house is currently closed to the public because it has not been restored. 2250 S. McQueen Road, Chandler THE MCCULLOUGH-PRICE HOUSE was built in 1938 by William D. McCullough, a Detroit resident who wintered in Arizona, and designed by Lescher and Mahoney, well-known Phoenix architects. It was once in the heart of 350-acres of alfalfa and cotton fields about a half a mile from Price Road, and was unique among the farmhouses popular in the area with its Pueblo Revival style and Art Deco influences. It had four bedrooms, maid’s quarters, a roof patio, and built-in barbecue. Art and Louise Price purchased the home in 1950. Louise was A.J. Chandler’s niece and Art was the first city attorney and justice of the peace for Chandler, and was instrumental in drafting the City’s constitution and by-laws. The home was donated to the City by the Price-Propstra family in 2001. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places but isn’t set up as a home. Instead, it houses the Chandler Museum’s East Valley

OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, MINDY JONES NEVAREZ, REALTOR AND OWNER OF THE AMY JONES GROUP AT KELLER WILLIAMS INTEGRITY FIRST, HAS NOTICED AN INTERESTING AND COMMON THREAD AMONG SOME OF HER CLIENTS: A DESIRE TO COMBINE HOUSEHOLDS WITH OTHER, USUALLY OLDER, GENERATIONS OF FAMILY MEMBERS. While many of Nevarez’s clients who are looking for multi-generational housing are hoping to provide additional care and oversight for older family members who are having health issues, she says others simply want to spend more time with them. “Oftentimes, it’s just about creating a loving environment for a third generation and giving the older children the ability to enjoy the grandparents’ involvement in their home and family life,” she says, adding that for families who are looking for multi-generational housing options, there are a number of opportunities. "For some, simply having another bedroom for a loved one that has an en suite bath is a good enough option; no separate entrance is needed. For those that are newer to the multi-generational living concept, typically they are looking for a little more separation of space so that the third generation has the feeling of their own environment to decorate, choose to engage or not to engage, and have space for privacy or quiet when desired.” Nevarez’s clients Christena and Merle Pfeifer are currently looking for a multi-generational home in Chandler that they can share with Christena’s parents. "Our inspiration to choose multi-generational living is simple: We feel this is the best way to ensure my parents will be handled with care, love, affection and still have a sense of independence,” Christena says, adding that they are looking for a home that includes a small, efficient and comfortable additional living space with a full kitchenette, eating space and separate bedroom. “Love is taking care of the ones who loved and raised us with the same love and care they gave us,” Merle says. “All of us will come to a point in our lives where we realize our aging parents or elderly family members will need to be cared for.” When working with clients like the Pfeifers, Nevarez says she likes to take the process very slowly and participate in the conversations about what needs need to be met in a home in order to make it a comfortable move for each generation. “The way that we work as a team is to ensure that we understand the needs of all of the family members,” she says. “I love working with families who CONTINUED >

are looking for this type of arrangement because I can really be a part of what makes their family successful and then help them find a home that will allow them to thrive.” This desire to look after and live with older generations under the same roof has caught the eye of a number of builders like Lennar, Nevarez says, who are building homes that can accommodate everyone and their needs. “Over the last several years other builders have followed suit in seeing the need for flexible, multi-generational housing. The key transformation with these products, and probably the biggest change that I’ve seen in the need for multi-generational housing, is the desire for the additional space for the third generation to be larger, more equipped, and have the opportunity to be separated,” she says. Jason Ewing, owner of Ewing Custom Homes, says he has definitely noticed the recent trend of homeowners who are looking for multi-generational housing—in most cases, homes that have separate living quarters like an attached or detached casita. “They are looking for privacy and independence for family, and at least one bedroom anywhere from 400 to 1,000 square feet, depending on their situation. We feel adding this extra living space is an excellent selling point and adds tremendous value to any home,” Ewing says. Regardless of their reasons for wanting to combine households, Nevarez says the benefits are overwhelmingly positive. “We learn from each other and when we live together, we get to learn so much about our family’s history, we are able to notice the health needs of our family members sooner, and our younger generations benefit from the wisdom and involvement of a generation, which for so many is a lost art form,” she says. “There can certainly be challenges and as a family’s needs change, so do their living arrangements. But, more and more I’m seeing families looking for a way to make it all work under one roof.” To contact the Amy Jones Group or for more information about the home featured in these photos (home with a casita located in Falcon Estates), call 480.250.3857, visit AmyJonesGroup.com, or follow them online at Facebook.com/AmyJonesGroup/. A Timeless Design MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR BATHROOM MAKEOVER BY FORGOING TRENDS AND MIXING IT UP

WHEN IT COMES TO ACTIVITY PER SQUARE FOOTAGE, THE BATHROOM IS PERHAPS THE BUSIEST ROOM IN THE HOUSE. When it needs some well-deserved sprucing, making sure the new look is durable, lasts, and is resistant to design-of-the-moment fads should be a priority. So when interior designer Dena Thomas’ clients were remodeling their home and talks turned to the guest powder bathroom, Thomas ensured its longevity by not granting their initial wish. The Chandler homeowners had thoughts about creating a farmhouse look—currently all-the-rage—for the room that features a sink, vanity and toilet behind a wall divider. However, Thomas had other ideas to stave off what would eventually be an outdated theme. “It is a trend and I don’t live in trends. I wanted to go outside of the box a little bit,” says Thomas, owner of Dena Thomas Designs. She managed a compromise that pleased her clients with a mix that implemented a central farmhouse-style piece, supported by modern touches. This, Thomas explains, yields a look that’s timeless. A contemporary vessel sink and chrome faucet with a complementary framed mirror replaced a gaudy gray pedestal sink and dated mirror. A chrome hand towel bar and toilet paper holder are modern elements that complement the vanity, which boasts light wood and classic farmhouse flair. Chrome hardware here gives this piece a modern vibe that ties it into the rest of the room. 32

If you’re pondering a bathroom remodel, Thomas offers some suggestions: + Personal taste over popular trends: “Grays are trending but for some, it’s depressing,” Thomas says. “What colors do you love or hate? Do you wear a lot of black or reds? Go with what speaks to you.”

Pumpkin, the 4 month old kitten and Allie, the 4 year old Labradoodle are the beloved pets of Donald and Patricia! Pumpkin is the newest addition to the family and Allie is thrilled to have her! We’ve had the pleasure of caring for them at AMCofC since the beginning of their lives and look forward to many more years of love and snuggles.

+ Light and bright: Shades in the white family create a brighter feel, which can be especially beneficial in a small space. Or, try something in the yellow clan that’s more neutral and creamier. + Quartz or quartzite: It’s durable and granite’s inexpensive, versatile and practical alternative. Dark tones show water spots, so if that’s something that you can’t live with or you’re not the type to wipe off every water drop immediately after using the sink, go with something lighter that’s close to a marble shade. “It’s clean, timeless, and you just can’t go wrong with it.” + LED it: “If you’re going to use recessed lighting, soft LEDs are so important, especially if you use cooler tones.”

Andrea Stickland, DVM Carolyn Duregger, DVM

Kristy Sorenson, DVM

+ Mix it up: Resist the temptation to go all out with one theme. “If a client wants a modern look, I don’t go all modern. I add an element of that in the home and don’t go fullfledged of one design.” Dena Thomas can be reached at 480.330.6072 or Facebook.com/DenaThomasDesigns.

eling right now,” says Justin Fultz, the owner of Let Us Floor You Inc. His business sells flooring, countertops, backsplashes, baseboards and trim molding. The new flooring is available in a variety of styles mirroring everything from decorative cement tiles to wood. It lacks the complications that comes along with grout, and it can be installed over existing tile. It’s also easy to take apart (like a giant jigsaw puzzle!). Although it locks together like laminate flooring, it lacks the echoey or click-clack sound that’s often a problem with that type of product. “You can throw it in a pool and take it out in a month and it still hasn’t swelled. It’s like a vinyl, but not. It’s a new laminate but it’s different,” says Fultz. “Waterproof flooring should be in its own category.”

Fultz is a fan of the product and likes how it creates consistency in the home, which is also popular this year. Most people are going with one or two types of flooring, and this product can transition from the bedroom to the kitchen to the bathroom. Gray tiles are a popular choice, but Fultz has some advice: “I always recommend people go with the gray-brown mix because the earth tones always come back around trendwise. If you go straight gray, then you will regret it later when the fad is out. I’ve been told by This kitchen is sleek with its white subway tile backsplash.

numerous flooring manufacturers that the natural colors are starting to come back around and will be more popular this coming year.” COUNTERTOPS White countertops with a either a swirl or veining has been the trendy choice in Fultz’s store. Quartz is stronger than granite, and there’s no worry about staining or sealing. Because it’s manmade, buyers can perfectly match the

product to existing countertops, whereas granite is a natural product that’s mined, so it is more difficult to match pieces. “Whether people choose granite or quartz tends to come down to [their] budget. In 2019, I think granite is coming around and taking over quartz,” says Fultz. The popularity of granite over quartz is tied to the more than 300% tariff placed on quartz this year. BACKSPLASHES Tiled backsplashes installed above kitchen countertops continues to be a sought-after home improvement. The most popular choice in tiles has carried over from last year—white subway tiles are still flying off the shelves, and so are cement deco ones with gray or white patterned designs. BASEBOARDS Fultz thinks simple is best and recommends

flat baseboards with a small amount of design. “The less decorative you go the better you are in the long run. We found that out the hard way. My dad had a fancy base with five or six different ledges and the dogs liked it and it collected lots of dust,” he says. It’s safe to say gray is the new white, waterproof flooring is in and keep it simple in 2019. For more information on products, visit LetUsFloorYouInc.com.

LOCAL WOMEN LAUNCH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY WOMEN BUILD

WHEN LISA O’HEARN MOVED TO CHANDLER FROM SAN DIEGO, SHE WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT THERE WASN’T ALREADY A LOCAL CHAPTER OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY WOMEN BUILD, AN ORGANIZATION SHE HAD BEEN INVOLVED WITH IN CALIFORNIA. So, she did what any go-getter and community-minded person would do—she organized a new chapter. “The organization is a community of women

coming together to fundraise and build,” she explains. “It’s amazing the connectiveness that these women find with each other while giving back to the community.” It took about a year to get the new chapter off the ground, but it’s now going strong and the building of a home is underway. With Women Build, there’s a fundraising component and the actual build component, and the group focuses on building one home per year. For this group, a build site in Central Phoenix was identified and a family selected. “I like to tell people that Habitat is a hand up, not a hand out,” O’Hearn says. “The receiving family goes through a very thorough vetting process, ensuring they have the need, that they are legal U.S. citizens, and that they have at least 2 years of consistent income. They’ll put in 200-400 hours of sweat equity and go through counseling and financial counseling.” On a recent Saturday morning, the group met at the build site to meet the recipients of this home, sign the walls, and to kick off the build. Approximately 300-350 women will be on the property throughout the build, with a number of them from Chandler—including O’Hearn, Vaughn Wittwer, Sybil Imel, Desirae Barkan, Minerva Daniels, Lyssa Lopez, Sue Adame and Bethanny Crouse. The group also works until March 15 to raise funds (Classy.org/team/183963). The actual building begins April 27. For those interested in getting involved, contact O’Hearn at lisaohearn01@gmail.com. 42
