GRANTS HELP LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS FEED THOSE IN NEED In

2018,

UnitedHealthcare

awarded $2 million in grants to local Arizona organizations focused on addressing the social determinants of health, one of which is food insecurity. The Association of Arizona Food

Banks

(AAFB)

received

$500,000 to increase access to fresh produce at local food banks statewide. After purchasing refrigerated tractor-trailers to deliver fresh produce around the state, AAFB put out a call to member food banks and the grassroots organizations they serve to share the UnitedHealthcare grant dollars with them as well, ensuring even more families see the benefits of fresh, healthy food options. Two local organizations in the East Valley are receiving funds as a result, including

Chandler’s

Matthew's

Crossing Food Bank. Matthew’s Crossing has been serving food insecure families and individuals in Chandler and the East Valley for over 17 years. But, the organization has been restricted in receiving and distributing fresh produce due to limited refrigeration capability. With a grant of nearly $12,000 from UnitedHealthcare’s funding of AAFB, Matthew’s Crossing is now able to expand its refrigeration capacity. The other East Valley organization to receive funds is Paz de Cristo in Mesa.

BANNER HEALTH ANNOUNCES NEW CHANDLER HOSPITAL NAME In June, Banner Health shared plans for a new, comprehensive medical center in the Southeast Valley. Health Center in Chandler and will help address the healthcare needs of area residents, including those who reside in Ahwatukee, Chandler and Gilbert. Now, it has a name. To select the name of the new hospital, the health system invited 15,000 local residents to participate via online voting. The chosen name, Banner Ocotillo Medical Center, was the overwhelming favorite. Banner Ocotillo Medical Center is expected to open in the fall of 2020 and represents an investment of more than $150 million. It will open with approximately 96 beds, and offer imaging, surgery, labor and delivery, intensive care and an emergency room. The hospital will have room for expansion as the community needs require more services.

GRANT ENABLES FIRE DEPARTMENT TO CONTINUE CHILD CAR SEAT INSPECTIONS The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has awarded highway safety grants in the amount of $30,811 to the Chandler Fire Department (CFD) that will enable the CFD to continue its Child Safety Seat Clinics program through Sept. 30, 2019. Grant funds will be used to staff the clinics and provide 150 child safety seats to families who cannot afford to purchase this lifesaving equipment on their own. The Chandler Fire Department offers car seat clinics most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at various locations in the community. Clinics are conducted by CFD personnel who have been certified as child passenger seat technicians through SafeKids International. The firefighters ensure each child is safeguarded in the appropriate seat for their age and weight, and they provide one-on-one instruction to caregivers on how to properly install and use their child’s car seat. More information about Chandler Fire Department’s Child Safety Seat Program, including the most up-to-date clinic schedule, can be found at ChandlerAZ.Gov/fire or by calling 480.782.2046. 14

Sanctuary on Camelback’s spa meditation courtyard and treatment room

SANCTUARY ON CAMELBACK RESORT AND SPA Since opening, Sanctuary on Camelback has had a focus on wellness. It’s been ranked in the top five hotel spas by Travel & Leisure magazine, and just completed a renovation of its Asian-inspired spa, updating the relaxation room and adding a quiet sanctuary. The 12-room spa offers unique treatments, including the Tok Sen—and Sanctuary is the only spa in the country that offers this service. It’s designed to clear blocked energy by tapping the body’s meridian with a wooden instrument. The spa’s signature service is the Luk Pra Kope, a blend of Thai massage and medicinal herbs. Named for the Japanese word for enlightenment, the Satori at Sanctuary is the ultimate in luxury and wellness. The fully customizable three-night journey includes three spa services, one private fitness session, unlimited group fitness classes and all meals.

Fo r m e r Olympic Gold Medalist M i s ty H y m a n I n s p i re s O t h e r s with a Sustainable Fitness Routine ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY CJ GERSHON

FORMER OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST AND PARADISE VALLEY RESIDENT MISTY HYMAN SPENT MANY YEARS TRAINING FOR EXCELLENCE IN SWIMMING. She has parlayed that passion and motivation into a career and way of life for her and her family. She knows that fitness is essential, and fitting it into a busy lifestyle can make it attainable as well. "As a junior in high school, I barely missed the Olympic Team in 1996 by three one-hundredths of a second. I am best known for winning the 200m butterfly in the Sydney Games in 2000," she says. "At the time, I was a junior at Stanford University, training about 20 to 25 hours per week. Our training was primarily swimming, but it also included yoga, Pilates, weight training, spinning and stretching. One of the biggest challenges for me was transitioning from my competitive swimming training and eating regimen to one suited for a more traditional lifestyle." Being accustomed to the all-or-nothing mentality for so long left Misty thriving on extremes. It was what attributed to her success in the pool, but it prevented her from finding a balance. "It took some time, but I have found that being 'obsessively moderate' about my eating and exercising helps me to keep a healthier balance. I don't do any extreme diets or exercising. I allow myself to enjoy holidays, treats and parties without over-indulging. My peaks and valleys aren't as big as they used to be. I no longer feel the need to be perfect in this area of my life, which is good because it would be impossible for me to be human in the best sense of the word and still be a perfect exerciser and eater." 26

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2019

Misty moved back to her hometown here in Paradise Valley after studying abroad for three years and has been a swimming coach and an inspirational speaker for the last 10 years. She is happily married and a proud mom of 1-year-old Vivian. "My fitness routine currently includes moderate toning and muscle balancing, weight training twice a week, and I squeeze in a swim, run, yoga class or hike wherever I can. I try to be flexible because with a baby you can't always stick to a specific plan!" As a swimming coach, Misty feels privileged to be able to pass on the

knowledge she gained from her coaches and her Olympic experience. "It gives me a platform to inspire and encourage others through public speaking. I consider it both an honor and an awesome responsibility." Misty

encourages

is important to them. Having the energy to be the best wife, mom, coach and speaker she can be means feeling strong, able and pain-free. So, moderate, well-balanced exercise is of importance. "I certainly don't train like an Olympian any-

more! That would be exhausting and counterproductive. I train and eat moderately. I don't have a special diet or any kind of restrictions. Food plays a lot of roles in our lives as humans, not only as nourishment but also socially and emotionally. I acknowledge and honor that all those aspects of food are important. Within that, I try to make the best choices I can without trying to be perfect, because that is impossible. Lean proteins, plenty of fruits and vegetables and enough whole-grain carbs, with limitations on processed and sugary foods, are Misty's general standards. And her mantra is simple: "I listen to my body the best I can. I have found that being kind to yourself is the best thing you can do." January 2019 | Chandler Lifestyle

EVERY THURSDAY DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, A GROUP OF WOMEN GATHERS TO STUFF 660 BACKPACKS WITH TABLES, SOUP, TUNA, APPLESAUCE AND EASY-TO-PREPARE MAC & CHEESE. Sometimes, bananas and toothbrushes make it into the mix. They deliver these bags to 27 schools in the Chandler Unified School District. Every Friday, the bags will go home with children that the volunteers—who just spent hours organizing these backpacks that help ensure the kids don’t go hungry over the weekend— will likely never meet or know. It may have been 86 years since the Chandler Service Club was launched, but nearly a century later, those who propel this allwoman nonprofit today carry out the mission their founding predecessors did: feed hungry kids. Founded in 1933, in the midst of the Depression, eight Chandler women merged their desires to respond to the widespread hunger among school children by cooking and delivering meals to children whose families couldn’t afford lunch. Today, this generation of service club members partners with fellow non-profit Arizona BrainFood and businesses like Bashas’ and Food City to make what is called the Weekenders Food Program happen. “The days we get together to pack up the backpacks, there’s so much camaraderie,” says Claudia Vasquez, public relations chair for the service club. “That warms my heart to know these kiddos are not, not going to have anything to eat over the weekend.” The club is comprised of 44 active members, plus lifetime and associate members. Some have great grandmothers who were among the founding women. 28

The club’s Flower Girl program empowers high school senior girls by helping them develop leadership skills, character-building, and community involvement. College-bound students may apply online for support from the club’s scholarship program. There’s also the Warm Feet Warm Hearts program, which gives nearly 500 Payless gift cards to children in need of jackets or proper shoes during the cold months so they can pick out something new to keep them warm. “The needs have grown every year, and we couldn’t do this without volunteers and donors that lead our organization,” Claudia says. Superintendent Camille Casteel acknowledged that without the Weekender program, many of her students would not be in appropriate shape for academics when they return to classes on Monday. Camille says these children typically participate in the district’s free breakfast and lunch program, so it’s conceivable that without those foodfilled backpacks, they would go hungry or be forced to sustain themselves on sporadic non-nutritious snacking. The service club approached Camille and the district with the concept a few years ago. “They proposed it and implemented it beautifully. There is a tremendous amount of appreciation from students, and it gives you peace of mind that children aren’t going to go without food every weekend,” Camille says. “The Chandler Service Club is made up of the most generous, kind and compassionate women the Chandler community has to offer. They are the epitome of a community service club that focuses on doing the right thing for kids and families.”

DR. CHRIS HEETLAND AND INSIGHT EYECARE & EYEWEAR KEEP LOCAL RESIDENTS’ EYES HEALTHY ARTICLE ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY BORG

“I GET TO HELP PEOPLE BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN ACHIEVE THEIR BEST EYE HEALTH AND VISION ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS...” AS THE SON OF A VETERINARIAN, DR. CHRIS HEETLAND GREW UP WITH A STRONG INTEREST IN THE LIFE SCIENCES, ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY. Once he was in college, Dr. Heetland says he gravitated towards the idea of specializing in optometry. “The science of vision is unbelievably complex and fascinating. The anatomy of a human eye is equally incredible,” he says. After graduating from Pacific University in 1998, Dr. Heetland moved to Chandler to begin his optometric career and founded Insight Eyecare & Eyewear in the summer of 2008. “We have a wonderful team of caring professionals that truly love what they do and enjoy making a positive impact in the lives of our patients,” he says. “It is our culture that truly drives the practice mission of ‘Highest Quality. Superior Care. A Better Experience.’” 32

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2019

In addition to offering the traditional services found at other eye care facilities, Dr. Heetland says he and his staff specialize in a couple of areas that are not very common. For example, Insight's Dry Eye Center provides expert diagnostic evaluation and customized treatments for dry eye disease. “As you might expect, Arizona has its fair share of dry eye sufferers, but dry eye is much more complex than most people realize, affecting 340 million people worldwide,” Dr. Heetland says. “With our state-of-the-art analysis, we provide our patients with real solutions that treat the root cause of their dry eye, such as our Dry Eye Spa therapy.” Insight Eyecare & Eyewear also sees patients in its Myopia Control Center. As Dr. Heetland notes, myopia is a medical condition, commonly known as nearsightedness, in which objects that are nearby are clear but distant objects are blurry. “At our practice, we implement visual correction strategies to greatly slow the progression of nearsightedness in our younger population. The primary method of control features specialized contact lenses that gently correct the curvature of the cornea overnight while asleep,” he explains. Dr. Heetland also advises concerned parents to encourage their children to spend less time in front of digital screens and more time playing outside. “But don’t forget the sunglasses! We cannot overlook the intense, potentially dangerous sunlight that is part of our beautiful Arizona,” he says, adding that the sun’s UV rays can damage the various delicate tissues of the eye and lead to cataract formation. “Furthermore, when considering the list of health-related problems associated with the intense Arizona sunshine, I believe age-related macular degeneration (AMD) should be at the top of this list.” As Dr. Heetland explains, the sun is the most powerful environmental contributing factor to the development of AMD. However, unlike with cataracts, it’s not so much the UV rays that end up causing the damage to the macula at the back of the eye, but rather over-exposure to specific wavelengths of blue-violet visible light. “The bottom line is everyone should be wearing high-quality, protective sunglasses. Interestingly, it is even more prudent for our younger patients to be wearing sunglasses because they tend to have larger pupils, which potentially allows for more damaging light to enter the eyes,” he says. Looking back, Dr. Heetland says he is definitely pleased with his decision to go into optometry. “I get to help people better understand how they can achieve their best eye health and vision on an everyday basis,” he says, adding that he also loves the challenge of staying on the very leading edge of best practices in eye care. “I have found this to be deeply rewarding, as my patients really appreciate the time, care, and valuable insights I continuously strive to provide them at every visit.” Insight Eyecare & Eyewear is located at 4925 S. Alma School Road, Ste. 1. For more information, call 480.883.0900 or visit InsightOnEyes.com. January 2019 | Chandler Lifestyle

Dip into Cool Total-Body Routines HARNESS THE POWER OF THE POOL TO SWITCH UP YOUR NEXT STRENGTH WORKOUT WATER IS JUST ABOUT THE MOST VERSATILE TRAINING TOOL OUT THERE, AND WITH CHANDLER AQUATICS, THE OPTIONS FOR GETTING A KILLER H2O WORKOUT ABOUND. Land-based exercises only target one muscle group, while water-based routines work several muscle groups in every move you make. The water is pushing on your muscles from every direction and provides more resistance than air does, explains Aquatics Recreation Coordinator Jessica Chamberlain.

34

Chandler Lifestyle | January 2019

“When you’re in the water your whole body has to stabilize as you exercise,” she says. “You’ll feel muscles you didn’t know you had after a water workout. There’s constant core engagement.” Aqua fit can provide the same intensity as a workout at the gym or on the track, but because of the resistance the water provides, it puts less strain on your joints while working your muscles harder. For example, loaded exercises like squats, lunges and presses become low-impact while still providing a challenging workout. The water-resistance effect can crank up your cardio, too. Counting calories? Take a class and burn from around 270 calories to over 500. From refreshed routines to evening offerings, Chandler Aquatics has turned the pool into a giant piece of total-body strength equipment. Experience the camaraderie of group fitness when you dip into deep water aqua fit or a high-intensity tAQUAta. You’ll sculpt, tone and build up your endurance while you jam to today’s hits—all within a fun, supportive community. Not quite ready to dive in? Hop on a board. Even taking your fitness regimen atop the water surface triggers similar benefits. Float your flow in one of the SUP (stand-up paddleboard) Yoga classes. Just keeping yourself steady on a floating yoga board can work stabilizing muscles from abs to calves. “Doing yoga on an unstable platform forces you to be present and intentional with all of your movements, giving you that total-body workout you seek in the gym,” Jessica explains. The Red Carpet Opening Ceremony, special World Premiere Shows, Filmmaking workshops, discussion panels and Film Market & Expo offer networking opportunities for financiers, distributors, students and film buffs alike. Downtown Chandler's hottest clubs and restaurants will host nightly after-parties, and the festival culminates in a grand Awards Ceremony to be held at the Chandler Center for the Arts on Jan. 21. "While we were looking for locations to host our festival, Chandler really stood out from the competition," says festival Founder & Director Mitesh Patel. "Since we've gotten started, the city, Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, Chamber of Commerce, local business owners and members of this tight-knit community have truly welcomed us with open arms." The warm reception prompted Mitesh to make Chandler the permanent home for the festival, and he envisions the annual event as a centerpiece of the city's burgeoning art scene for years to come. The Chandler International Film Festival partnered with Chandler's Multicultural Festival, which is held the same weekend. Attendees of the Multicultural Festival will be treated to free film screenings on Jan. 19 at the Chandler Downtown Stage.
