Elementary Students Spread Kindness Third graders at Navarrete Elementary wanted to spread kindness, so each student made a self-addressed “SMILE” card to spread throughout the community. They started their “SMILES” with a simple act of kindness for someone. The card was left for the recipient whose job was to write down how they were given a “SMILE” and pass it on. After recording three acts of kindness, the cards were mailed back to the students!

RUSTIC CHARM This remodeled environ takes on an Old World design style that links it to the homeowners’ Tuscan-inspired home. Emphasis on the fireplace is attributed to a mantle that flaunts over-grouted stone—rather than the common and contemporary clean façade—which exudes rustic charm. Reclaimed wood beams provide some shade over the eye-catching circular sofa while tying it in with the same wood used above the fireplace and adding shape and depth to the layout. A FOODIE'S PARADISE Designed for a foodie and lover of cooking, Smith granted his wish for a full outdoor dining experience that’s dominated by a grill that features a crank to raise or lower the grill above the cooking wood to vertically adjust between direct and indirect heat zones. It’s cradled by a stone and masonry block structure that was built wide and tall to shade whoever is at the grill during sweltering afternoons. There are fans, lights and a misting system above. And below, multiple cooking areas and tons of counter space are perfect for large party platters of ribs, steaks, burgers and all the accouterments. This open frame includes a slatted roof constructed from Alumawood that allows smoke to escape rather than being trapped in, and the structure was situated so smoke blows away from the backyard rather than into it. 26

BREAKING THE RULES What makes this design make you do a double-take is the straight line of travertine decking that breaks a rule by not following the flowing curves of the pool— per the homeowners' request. To soften the look, a curved wall with a water feature between the ramada and the back of the pool was added, as well as the rounded and raised fire pit area. Maximizing the entire backyard space and creating destination areas that beg to be lounged and lingered in was the goal, Smith reveals. A putting green, fire pit and a dining area fully tricked out with a bar, grill and smoker all strategically placed separately around the exiting pool were key in making that happen. “You feel drawn out to these areas,” Smith says.

KATY KRUPNIK WAS BORN WITH THE INHERENT ABILITY TO ORGANIZE AND MAKE SENSE OUT OF CHAOS. She’s so good at it, she became a professional organizer and started her own business, The Tidy Cottage. “I don’t like to clean and I’m not your typical Type-A person,” says Krupnik. “I love that simplifying your home can help you get to the things that are important to you.” Krupnik remembers being organized even as a kid. Her friends’ moms would pick her up to organize their closets. After college, she had a few different careers. AS A LITTLE GIRL GROWING UP IN ILLINOIS, DENAE HOSTETLER WOULD HELP HER MOM, WHO WORKED IN A FUDGE SHOP, TO MAKE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CANDIES FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS. When she was in her 20s, Hostetler’s jobs as a whitewater rafting and kayaking teacher, a contractor for The Bureau of Indian Affairs for wildland firefighting and an independent government water truck driver involved a lot of traveling. “I once stayed with a family in Oaxaca, where I would wake up to fresh hot cacao every morning—they drank this instead of coffee—and the streets smelled like chocolate. Almost every corner had people grinding cacao beans and selling their Mexican chocolate,” she says. Several years ago, Hostetler, now married and a mom of two young boys, was looking for a way to earn some money while her husband, who is in the military, was deployed overseas. Although she is also a licensed massage therapist, Hostetler wanted to find something that was not dependent on other peoples’ schedules. Inspired by her memories of making candies with her mom and her delicious experiences with chocolate while traveling, Hostetler decided to try her hand at the chocolate-making craft. “I felt I needed something I could do that would keep me ‘sane’ while also giving me

freedom to be with my family, so I started teaching myself how to make chocolate from the bean,” the Chandler resident says. “Since my dad is a machine builder, he helped me make this possible, and I incorporated what I learned from my mother to turn this cacao into something extra special.” Hostetler created her first successful batch of chocolate in 2014, which she shared with friends and family. “From there it just grew from a hobby, to actually getting our guest house remodeled, licensed and permitted so I could sell to the public, which began around October 2016,” she says. Hostetler named her new business DNA Chocolate. The former guest house is now a “full-on factory” that is totally separate from the house, but still allows her to balance work and family.

“I use certified organic, fair-trade ingredients which I handcraft into a variety of different products from bars, barks and candy boxes to nibs, hot cacao and miniature bar sample bar boxes,” Hostetler says, adding that her personal favorite is the trail mix bark, which combines 60 percent dark chocolate with fruits and nuts like cashews, pistachios and blueberries. “Sometimes I just like a couple of 70 percent dark chocolate squares. It only has 15 grams of organic cane sugar in the whole bar, and is 15 squares. It is only two ingredients, and I love to taste the bold unique flavors.” While she uses a variety of nuts and dairy products in her facility, Hostetler says she also creates a number of vegan options and does not use peanuts as an ingredient. “My candies, creams and truffles are pretty big for holidays and special occasions, and I keep the ingredients as simple as possible," she says. "For example, the ganache that’s enrobed with the chocolate is just whole organic cream and chocolate.” In addition to making a variety of decadent chocolates, which she sells at a number of places including Moon Dust Farms at Mesa Power Square Mall and Merchant Square in Chandler, Hostetler enjoys meeting with other small local business owners to share ideas. “We all offer something very unique and different, but we all have a passion for creating global awareness for nations that need fair trade and ethical business partners,” she says, adding that her company focuses on the nation of Haiti. While she is thrilled with her decision to launch DNA Chocolate, Hostetler admits it is definitely makes for some long days. Her husband is currently serving in his fourth deployment overseas, and she stays busy juggling her business and raising her young sons. “To be honest, I'm also very tired,” she says, laughing. “But I love that I always have a special, allergy-free gift to share and that I'm also making a difference in a country that needs help becoming an exporting country.” For more information, visit DNAChocolate.Simpl.com.

The average lifespan of an AC unit in our desert is about 10-15 years. I have met people with units much older than that, but remember the rule of thumb is this… If your unit is old, and if you start having a pattern of repairs, the smartest thing you can do is get ready to replace it. The best time to gather estimates is not when your AC is broken during the summer. Most companies offer their best pricing in the off season from November to March. Think of it as the clearance sale time to get the best prices. At Precision Air & Heating we like to say we give you the best deal year round because we don’t gouge price during the summer like our industry is notorious for. The other advantage of being proactive on your AC replacement is comfort. Most unit failure occurs during the extreme summer heat. There are 4 million people in the Valley with stuff breaking at the same time and literally not enough HVAC Technicians to get you quickly. First, you’ll get an estimate and probably a high one, then they’ll need to order product, schedule an install crew, and possibly a crane rental and sheet metal fabrication. Adding in those variables your best case install time might be 2- 3 days or more. Not fun when it is 100 degrees in your home. Last summer on the first 115 degree day, we received over 350 calls in one day on down units. Even though we are one the Valley’s largest, we could still only service less than 25% of that. I highly encourage anyone with an older AC unit to get proactive and at least start the shopping now. It will have you better prepared and save you both money and time in the long run. There is another big advantage that comes with replacing older units and that is the energy efficiency. The newer units are much higher in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). Go to the New Unit page on our website and try out the BTU calculator. It’s a great tool that will show you based on unit age, how much you would save on annual energy costs with a newer unit.
