Shred-A-Thon A group of Chandler business owners, all part of the grassroots group Ocotillo Business Professionals, joined with the Chandler Police Department to once again host their semi-annual Shred-A-Thon. More than 17,000 pounds of documents were shredded, hundreds of old prescriptions were taken back by the police, and over $1,400 in voluntary donations for the 5013C charity, The Hamilton Homeless Fund, was raised.
3rd Annual #livelikelexi Charity Event The 3rd Annual #livelikelexi Charity Event was held at Majerle's Sports Grill Chandler Fashion Center, and included bully awareness booths, food, live music, a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, a kids' corner, and a cornhole tournament. Proceeds go towards scholarships for community youth leaders who encompass the same Anti-Bullying Character as Lexi did, beginning in 2020.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA MEMORIAL On Saturday, Dec. 15, the Valley of the Sun Mortuary and Cemetery and the Chandler Exchange Club hosts the Wreaths across America memorial
for
military
veterans
buried at the cemetery located at 10940 E. Chandler Heights Road. The Chandler Exchange Club has been working with other local veteran and community service organizations to raise the necessary funds to purchase wreaths for the 2,700-plus veterans known to be buried in the cemetery. The project for the Chandler cemetery began in 2016 with 500 wreaths. In 2017, that number increased to 1,500. The goal this year is to have a wreath for every veteran laid to rest at the Valley of the Sun Cemetery. Volunteers are invited to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. There will be a formal memorial service at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial. There will be food and refreshments following the memorial. The memorial service will include the reading of a proclamation by Mayor Kevin Hartke and a message from keynote speaker, Christine Jones. With a menu of comfort food favorites that have captured the attention of local diners and celebrity chefs alike, Colton Grubb’s dream of running a Valley-wide franchise took one big step when the second location of his eatery known for its signature salads and “staks” opened at Gilbert and Ocotillo roads in November. And it all started with a Labor Day weekend conversation about French fries. “We were talking about having French fries with different toppings. I took that idea and ran with it,” Grubb says about the casual discussion four years ago that was the seed that sprouted into his serious and growing restaurant. 16

Grubb chose Chandler to host his second locale, following the original downtown Gilbert shop he opened in 2016. “I wanted to create an atmosphere where I liked having dinner at,” he says. This includes a versatility that accommodates family dinners, couples on dates and solo diners all craving well thought-out signature dishes ranging from carnivore to vegetarian, with a customizable option that lets them add some DIY flair. “We want to provide an atmosphere that’s comfortable … where you can be as healthy or indulgent as you want to be,” Grubb says. Parmesan tossed with basil pesto—Grubb’s personal go-to lunch—is one of the items on the lighter end of the spectrum. On the other side are dishes like the chilaquiles piled with black bean chili, barbacoa chicken, cheddar and eggs over which celebrity chef Guy Fieri fawned over in his drool-inducing show, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The most popular is the Sweet Lou’s BBQ, a plate of barbecue braised beef, bacon and coleslaw that’s named after Grubb’s late grandfather Lou Grubb, the Valley automotive icon and founder of the former Lou Grubb Chevrolet. “It’s perfect. He loved good food and all of us being together enjoying it,” says the third-generation Arizonan. While most features—the décor, food and overall appealing aesthetic vibe— flaunted in the Gilbert Grubstak are present here, the Chandler location boasts several unique elements. A larger patio offers space for cornhole contests and table games like Connect Four and Jenga, while three flat screens allow for sports viewing. But perhaps the most noticeable amenity is the full-service bar where patrons can order beer, wine and cocktails to quench their thirst. There’s also a signature cocktail menu and a handful of breakfast cocktails, plus a happy hour food menu offered five-days-a-week. “It’s a kind of escape, where you can get away from whatever else is going on,” Grubb says. “Anyone can go to a restaurant. WHAT YOU NEED + Cheese board or serving plate + Assortment of cheeses (We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere) PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Meaningful Moments THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN I WANT TO SLOW DOWN AND SAVOR ALL THE LITTLE THINGS IN MY WORLD. Revel in my good fortune and reflect on my blessings. Instead, it has become the most demanding time of the year—cooking and baking, gift-buying and wrapping, decorating, parties, visits with family and friends, acts of charity and giving back. Somehow it all gets done but the stress always has me vowing to make a change; to slow it all down and make time for the important things, no matter how small. To appreciate family, friends, health, and, of course, this magazine. As I look back over this past year at Chandler Lifestyle, I’m so proud of how it has grown, not only in size and readership, but in the way we have been able to represent and connect our wonderful community and its people. Today, I ask you to join me in carving out a few minutes every day to take pause and do something—anything —that makes you feel good. And then another few that makes someone else feel good.
