’Tis the Season to Be Thankful SO MANY DAYS I JUST TRY TO GET THROUGH MY TO-DO LIST. The hours fly by and I race through them, taking care of one thing after another, mentally checking off my list. In the back of my mind I know that I should slow down and enjoy the moments—and I know that most, if not all of you, are reading this and thinking, “I do that, too… and I know that, too.”

We all know that. Sometimes though, it’s easier to just say I’ll get to doing that tomorrow. That’s why I love Thanksgiving. It’s a big reminder of just how important it truly is to really stop, be present, and be thankful. This year I’m thankful for so much. I watch my children growing up, and am so thankful that they are mine and that I get to share their lives and guide them. I have my husband by my side, and a life filled with laughter. My friends, of course--who could get through life without them? I have a roof over my head and food on my table. There are so many in this world who don’t have as much as I do. Whether they’re fighting an illness, challenging times, or down on their luck, Thanksgiving also reminds us to not only remember to be grateful for what we each have, but to help others who need it. This issue is all about being thankful. On page 22 we honor just a few of the first responders who are always there for us whenever we call. Even on the holidays, while we’re celebrating with friends and family, they choose to be at work, just in case we need them. On page 18 we honor those who served our country, to give us the many freedoms we have today. To all of them, we say thank you. And if you’re wondering how you can help others in need, turn to page 28, where we showcase several local

BATTLE OF THE BANDS WINNER
The Patio at The Forum sponsored a Battle of the Bands that brought out 18 local bands competing over a nine week period for the grand prize of $10,000 and second prize of $2500. Congratulations to The Borrowers for winning and to SLINGSHOT for second place! “We strive to create a place where our local community can have a fun night out,� says Chuck Fazio, owner of The Forum. Chuck and Angela Fazio firmly believe that people were created by God to be in community and The Patio was designed with that in mind. The 7000 sq ft, resort-like patio offers live entertainment Tuesday-Friday. Tacos and Tequila Tuesdays with DJ; Wine Down Wednesdays is Ladies Night with Blues or Jazz; Throwback Thursdays with a band playing tunes from the 60s-90s; and Friday Night Live with special guest bands. All nights have food and drink specials. The Forum offers many other types of entertainment including UFC Fight Nights, Murder Mystery Dinners, and Cornhole Tournaments. ChandLore Visitors to Downtown Chandler were transported back in time during ChandLore. The event showcased live actors and musicians telling eclectic stories of yesteryear. Stationed along Boston Street and San Marcos Place under the historic colonnade, actors from ImprovMania brought bygone characters to life. Alongside the lively actors were a variety of musical acts playing the harmonies of another era.
2018 Pancakes and Pavers Nearly 50 city employees and 500 volunteers joined forces in September to perform labors of love at Chandler public housing sites, the senior center, Jewish Community Center and AZCEND.

the year. From the canned green beans to the French’s Crispy Fried Onions, it was warm and creamy, baked in a casserole dish, and served after just a bit of spooning to mix the ingredients. It took her less time to make than it took my grandfather to fall asleep in the recliner after dinner, but it left a lasting impression on my taste buds that I will carry with me for every Thanksgiving to come. The original Grandma Jones recipe called for just five ingredients, but over the years I’ve freshened it up a bit for a modern twist on a traditional classic.
INGREDIENTS + 1 ½ lbs. fresh green beans + 2 Tbsp. butter + 2 cloves garlic + 2 Tbsp. All-purpose flour + ¾ cup of chicken broth + 1 ¼ cups half-and-half or whole milk + Salt & pepper to taste + 1 cup French’s Crispy Fried Onions
DIRECTIONS Cook green beans in salted water until bright green, and lay them into a baking dish oiled up a bit so that nothing sticks. 1 LOYD BOYD Born in December of 1922 in Gonzales, Texas, Loyd Boyd moved to Arizona with his family as a young boy. He was drafted into the Army during World War II, and was shipped off in December of 1942 to the San Pedro, California Draft Registration/Intake Station. Boyd was then sent to Fort Huachuca, Arizona as part of the 480th MP Battalion. While there, they lived in tents as their barracks. After his time in the service ended, Boyd returned to finish high school. He became a diesel mechanic and school bus driver for the next 20 years. He got married, and one of his sons, Jerry Boyd, served on the Mesa City Council and as Vice Mayor of Mesa. Year began service: 1942 Rank: Private First Class, U.S. Army
2 GILLIAN AND WES BURNS Gillian joined the Navy during college through the Navy Nuclear Power Officer Candidate program. “I was one of the first women officers to complete the Nuclear Power training program to serve on a combatant ship,” she says. Gillian now tutors elementary through high school students in math, and volunteers in the local community. Wes was working as a police officer and pursuing a Master’s degree when a viewing of the film Saving Private Ryan inspired him to enlist. Coincidentally, just a few days later, he saw a Coast Guard Reserve flyer recruiting new members for a soon-to-be-formed Port Security Unit in the break room at the police department. Wes’ tour at PSU 313 culminated in September of 2018, while he was serving as the unit’s Executive Officer. He is currently a staff officer to USCG Pacific Area Command, Office of Deployable Specialized Forces, in California.

4 ROBERT OROURKE Robert ORourke decided to enlist in the U.S. Army for one key reason: he wanted to do something that made a difference in people’s lives. ORourke was stationed at Fort Knox and Schofield Barracks, and he had a combat deployment to Afghanistan in 2011 and Guam in 2014. ORourke, who is a Chandler resident, is currently teaching at a school in Queen Creek.

3 ANTHONY GILMORE It was an easy decision for Anthony Gilmore to enlist in the military. He has a number of family members who also served in the U.S. Navy, including his father, uncles and brother. Gilmore, who was an Engine-

ING WITH FAMILY OR LETTING LOOSE AMONG FRIENDS. However, not everyone will be experiencing those luxuries on this year’s biggest holidays. For many of the men and women of Chandler’s police and fire departments, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are a typical day on the job that requires readiness to respond to situations that take no days off. Here’s how three first responders plan to spend their holidays on-the-job.

Spending holidays on the street comes with the territory for Scott Picquet, a 20-plus year veteran of firefighting and police service. As most of the city is in feast-prep mode, Picquet will be spending the majority of these prime Thanksgiving hours in his patrol vehicle. “Some restaurants that are open make sure first responders on the road have dinner. People will drop off pumpkin pies. They just spoil us,” he says. Picquet’s wife is an intensive care nurse, so working holiday shifts has been routine since they were college sweethearts. They have no children, but the nieces and nephews fill that role. He hopes for a calm Thanksgiving—last year, the day included catching armed criminals breaking into a medical clinic. Either way, Piquet and his colleagues are primed to respond. “One of our citizens may be having the worst day of their lives and we come. That’s what we do,” Picquet says. “We are fortunate to be able to serve.”

Like every holiday season for the last four years, James Schulte will be on duty Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. However, thanks to his new 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift, it will be the first time the husband and father of two will be home for the family dinner on those actual days. However, morning festivities will kick off with Schulte’s co-workers. The dispatch room will be decorated and everyone will collaborate on a potluck. Schulte got a smoker a couple of years ago and is expected to bring something that’s been cooking low and slow for hours—likely smoked chicken wings. “We all know the struggle of being at work during the holidays when everyone else is at home with their families,” he says. “While we all try to make the best of it, it feels good to be in the position to help people if they need it.”

After 18 years as a firefighter, Steve Carlson is accustomed to spending holidays at his homeaway-from-home when most in the city are settled in the comfort of their actual homes. In these situations, family brings the festivities to him. This year will be no different when he works Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. “Our families usually come down to visit and bring us snacks or dinner. Or, they eat with us and we’ll have a big family outing with everyone’s families,” says Carlson, who’s married with four

But just because he’ll treat calls with the same demeanor he would on any other day, Carlson doesn’t forget that those who are in need of his rescuing do so on a day that is special for them. “You’ve got to keep that in your mind. Their whole day changes so we try to help them extra in any way we can,” he says.

Every December brings local businesses, community organizations, families and floats together for one glowing evening in celebration of the holidays. For the first time ever, Parade of Lights will extend a .75-mile stretch from Frye Road to Erie Road, giving parade-viewers the chance to marvel at even more floats featuring hundreds of thousands of lights. Parade newbies like EL Zaribah Shrine Transportation Unit and Chandler National Little League–Challenger Division join longtime favorites such as PAWS for Patients and Daughters of the American Revolution for the holiday spectacle that brings joy and cheer to spectators of all ages. The new route also improves spectator viewing and traffic flow as it merges with the ever-changing landscape of Downtown Chandler. Getting to the Parade or a Downtown business is now easier than ever-before. A COMMUNITY TRADITION This unique Chandler tradition began in 1957, when Chandler resident Earle Barnum raised the idea of a tumbleweed tree after he saw a similar one in Indiana built out of cone-shaped chicken wire with pine boughs stuck in the holes. Many members of the community helped create the first tree in Chandler using tumbleweeds that they gathered from around town. Little did these folks know that they were the first to do such a thing, and that it would continue as an annual Christmas tradition from then on. Now in its 62nd year, the Tumbleweed Tree still stands as the City’s seasonal centerpiece, reflecting the resourcefulness and uniqueness of its residents. TUMBLEWEED TREE TRIVIA Test your knowledge and enjoy fun facts about Chandler’s most favorite Christmas tree! + It takes staff approximately three weeks for collecting, assembling, decorating, and removal of the Tumbleweed Tree. + Crews will add nearly 1,000 tumbleweeds to wire frame to sprout the Christmas tree, which stands 25 feet high in Downtown Chandler. + The Tumbleweed Tree is painted with 25 gallons of white paint and covered in 20 gallons of flame retardant, then dusted in 65 pounds of glistening glitter to give it a festive look. + It takes approximately 1,200 LED lights to light up the Tumbleweed Tree.
